Great talk - nice to hear the exploration of these topics from different perspectives. I was generally appreciative of the degradation timeline for highlanders (when kept too warm) that Drew covered-most people don't cover that so clearly. Extrapolating from that...if a highland hybrid is actively growing roots and getting bigger leaves during the height of summer...then it's probably not suffering from heat-related issues, right? Also, I'm not at all surprised that "lush sphag" eventually leads to problems like root rot: as the new layer grows, the old layer dies, compacts and suffocates the roots-it's the same problem a lot of houseplant and orchid growers encounter with any organic media...which is why (in my opinion) inert media are very valuable for long-term health of roots.

Well said Drew. I agree that pattern of how they seem to die. It is really discouraging to see plants crash; the roots go first, and by the time I always realize, it is a bit too late.

I'm growing everything in pure coco husk chips and they seem to be doing great. Incredibly loose and airy. I water daily, sometimes skip a day.
