After a 15-year production run, Toyota has finally unveiled the 2025 Toyota 4Runner, marking the first year of its highly anticipated sixth-generation model. The 4Runner, originally derived from the Toyota Hilux pickup truck, has evolved over four decades into one of the few truly off-road-ready midsize SUVs with a strong following and iconic status.
The outgoing 2024 4Runner was powered by a 270-hp V6 engine paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. For 2025, Toyota raises the bar with the base i-Force powertrain, a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. This new engine outperforms the old V6 in both power and torque, coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission, available in the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited trims.
The real showstopper, however, is the optional i-Force MAX hybrid powertrain available on the TRD Off-Road and Limited trims, and standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum models. Combining a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with a 48-hp electric motor, this system delivers 326 horsepower and a remarkable 465 lb-ft of torque. It competes directly with rivals like the Ford Bronco, showcasing serious performance capabilities.
The all-new Trailhunter trim is a standout addition for overlanding enthusiasts, designed in collaboration with renowned off-road brands. Featuring ARB's Old Man Emu shocks, 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T tires, steel skid plates, and a 20-inch LED light bar, the Trailhunter is a factory-built rig ready for serious off-road adventures. The TRD PRO trim continues to lead with its TRD-tuned FOX suspension and similar off-road capabilities.
Inside, the 2025 4Runner features a new Android-based infotainment system. While the base model retains its 8-inch touchscreen, higher trims offer a 14-inch high-definition screen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. A Smart Key system with push-button start is now standard across all trims.
With its powerful hybrid engines, off-road-focused trims, and upgraded technology, the 2025 4Runner stays true to its roots as a rugged, adventure-ready SUV while embracing modern advancements.
