  • The Science of Greed : Why the Ideology of self interest could be the downfall of the American Dream. Wealth may seem like mostly an unmitigated good, yet it also has significant costs. My research reveals the pernicious effects of inequality and why something must be done about them...before it's too late.
Paul K. Piff is a social psychologist and research scientist in the Psychology Department at the University of California, Berkeley. He holds a B.A. in Psychology from Reed College and a Ph.D. in Psychology from UC Berkeley.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

There is no such thing as trickle down economics. its a disparaging name used to straw man an actual economic model.
The model is called "supply side economics" and has its advantages and disadvantages, you can say it wont work but at least learn what its called and what the theory is. You might just prove your self right, but at the cost of allowing yourself to be convinced otherwise. The risk is worth the reward.

An interesting observation for me was when a table was full of food, and there was only only dish that was specifically cooked and served for me. Yet one of the people at the lunch chose to eat what I had been given, whilst I couldn't eat what else was the on table. That revealed so much about that person's heart and for sure it is about the heart, and with some people it doesn't matter how much you give them, they will still desire what someone has and think it is their right to take it.

No one became a success in anything without help or the continued actions of others to keep that alive. Fantastic presentation and message here. The odd thing about the hierarchy power trap is when a poorer person gets wealthy financially absolute power corrupts absolutely likely. Then if a person is charitable for efforts of selflessness it makes them happier ....giving has another scientific study on that.
I think some that have addictions get very greedy and miserable. It is an ancient battle with that King Midas golden touch in over use.

    • @chrishess7443
      @chrishess7443 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Interesting view... heres some fun insight for ya. try this... imagine addiction causes and contributing factors like a pie chart/pizza. Over 3/4 of the slices are mental health related ranging from personality disorders, trauma/abuse/anxiety disorders, mood disorders, socialistic problems, and the reality of people with mental health problems are still ostracized/stigmatized socially and even by doctors. Now the smaller portion/slices are the physiological part of addiction like the withdrawl and physical need. Another thing is addiction will eventually bring to the surface for all to see; ignored, suppressed, or previously undiagnosed mental illnesses or mental health issues. A person can be addicted to things besides narcotics, pot, and so forth that dont have the physiological addiction portion and this is due to the fact addiction is first and foremost a mental health problem, a way of pushing through/coping when they are ready to throw in the towel so to speak. The vast majority of people who experiment with illegal drugs or occasionally take them, drink alcohol, or prescribed a narcotic for pain and so forth never have or develope an addiction problem.

    • @glenwicks4976

@@jorgecrawford7419 What do you mean it's not in our biology? All humans have the power to be empathetic and considerate towards others, and that just shows how we have evolved over time. We aren't living among cavemen anymore.
Also, your comment implies that you aren't even going to try to find a solution for decreasing the enormous amount of greed in this world, and that makes you a part of the problem. The solution is really quite simple. Increase your level of empathy and be nice to everyone that you meet. Practice leaving some for others instead of taking all. If everyone did exactly this, we would be moving further away from caveman days.
Of course there will be greedy people that want to ruin it for everyone else, but we have the power to confront them and show them the power of empathy. That is all I have to say about that. Thank you for reading.

Secondly many wealthy individuals have used charities as a means to further their economic interests. "Winners Take All" an excellent book by Anand Giridharadas. An excellent exposition of tacts and strategies the wealthy employ to gain more at the detriment of others and the society. Anand essentially confirms this talk's laboratory findings in real life.

At the time it pays of for us because of the tips, but technically we carry crates under time pressure at minimum wage. It's breaking our bones and we have to come earlier to load the cars and don't get paid for it. That's how Mr Gates does it, he sources compassion and generosity out, to the customers. Needless to say that 50-60% of the people don't give us anything while the delivery is free for them. I have never worked so hard in my life!

The Gospels and Ten Commandments match the findings in this video point for point. It's a case of scientific reality matching Christian reality; they lend validation to each other. Thanks Paul for the presentation and and the hard work that went into it.

And as denmark opened up again after Corona lockdown the government chose to open their holiday money to get the Danish economy going strong again, and while they got their money, people who dont have jobs got $100 for free to support the Danish economy.
The ones who have job and got their holiday money, started complaining about the poor got money too.
And the poor who got the $100 complained about getting money they did not ask for.

It's a good thing linearity (if that's a word....) doesn't exist in nature; straight lines, constants, etcetera. We may like to think they exist, they can or they should - and attitudes may be fixed in a belief that constancy exists, can exist or should - but anyone who thinks that will suffer when they realize that life doesn't work that way.

So I use to value work and the money it made, Then I valued the freedom it bought and the higher levels of satisfaction that came with it. But Now...
I am really starting to reject the conscious phase of living.
So, I am looking forward to each night going to dream. Not sleep, but that dreaming is really quite fascinating. Like my private yet unknown and unpredictable and always changing world.
The Australian Aboriginal People has a very elaborate Dream World as part of their culture. So again another what seems to be a very technologically weak society being dominated by the Europeans, only to find that the Europeans, the British colonists pretty much are only seeing one facet of the world. And they miss again the Dream World.
Or in India, the Spiritual world. So maybe individual greed is weak and Greedy Societies are inherently weak. They can only survive if they take. Eventually they run out of steam. And then they fall back to an earlier simpler state.

Cont comment... by continuing social awareness you accomplish the same results but what is neglected to be addressed here is with that money has also an association with both control and ability to purchase power decisions that do not represent the majority of the people!!! Support your smaller and local businesses and you will start seeing a shift in both social issues and redistribute power to the people which hopefully would reflect a greater sense of balance in decisions made for the people!

Greed leads to destructive behavior. You will become restless and your mind will never be content. Your heart will feel empty and there will be a desperate desire to have more.
If you are reading this then you know that there is truth to this statement. God desires you to seek Him and not earthly wealth..if you do then these worldly material things will be provided out of necessity because God knows you need things to survive - He created you after all. Besides, if you seek money you abandon God for an idol. Yes the world runs on money, but faith in God is more powerful. It is written in the Bible, "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
    Mark 8:36 NIV
You cannot serve God and money, so make the choice but remember that you cannot take earthly wealth when you leave this world. Earthly wealth means nothing in the Kingdom of God. So be humble, pray continuously for God to support you. Have faith that God loves and cares for your needs. You will find a peace, a contentness that doesn't come from a promotion. Money is fleeting but Jesus Christ is forever. Believe in Jesus.
I ask Jesus everyday now to instruct me to who needs to hear His message today from me and today it is the greedy. Yesterday it was the suicidal. All will be told comforting messages as this is the mission of a Christian: To spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world and straighten the paths of the crooked I preparation for the Kingdom of God.

In a letter addressed to Queen Victoria over a century ago, and employing an analogy that points to the one model holding convincing promise for the organization of a planetary society, Bahá'u'lláh compared the world to the human body. There is, indeed, no other model in phenomenal existence to which we can reasonably look. Human society is composed not of a mass of merely differentiated cells but of associations of individuals, each one of whom is endowed with intelligence and will; nevertheless, the modes of operation that characterize man's biological nature illustrate fundamental principles of existence. Chief among these is that of unity in diversity. Paradoxically, it is precisely the wholeness and complexity of the order constituting the human body -- and the perfect integration into it of the body's cells -- that permit the full realization of the distinctive capacities inherent in each of these component elements. No cell lives apart from the body, whether in contributing to its functioning or in deriving its share from the well-being of the whole. The physical well-being thus achieved finds its purpose in making possible the expression of human consciousness; that is to say, the purpose of biological development transcends the mere existence of the body and its parts. Prosperity of Humankind

On the world map it looks as though Greenland and america are bigger than Africa when in actual fact Greenland is 14 times smaller than Africa and America can fit into just North Africa, adding the UK Japan, etc and the land mass of those combined is still not close to the size of Africa.

Great work Paul, keep it up! I think ease of existence and moral education are also factors. In Australia certain poor communities are handed welfare payments unconditionally and education is often skipped. This leads to very lazy and immoral people addicted to drugs, alcohol and tobacco to the point where they are seriously neglecting, starving and abusing their own children daily. They are violent to others and destructive to the environment with no regard for anyone but themselves. Obviously this stems from colonization related injustices imposed on their ancestors but it is clear to see that ease of existence and lack of education are the main contributing factors.
Unfortunately the world is run based on profit and loss as most governments receive funding from big business thus are inclined to tow the line. Until political campaigns are evenly/fairly funded with full disclosure we will never improve as a race. When you are poor or sick (speaking from experience) it brings you closer to God. As stated, many virtuous qualities grow stronger when your doing it tough. That's why when times are good its important to bring yourself to account each day, practice using virtues daily and always strive for Justice.

    Subject: Greediness 😏
🍐 When the Gold price goes up and up, most people who has a good financial background, always run to buy more on gold made items. They become greedy in such fields and their greediness increases.
🍐 When a rich person has a luxurious vehicle, a large house and expensive properties, the poor people on the medium stage also becomes steady in the line of greediness. They to prefer to live a luxurious life even they cannot afford to come to such a place.
🍐 Today the poor people in the medium stage never want to look down and live, they prefer a very rich life even they cannot afford to be in that position. Greediness comes to all people who has no satisfaction with what they have. They prefer not hand to mouth, but a life that will make them a proud living more than anything.
🍐 Mostly the people doesn't want to live as per their income and survive. But they run out for an expensive life even by borrowing money from the others or by selling the property they have in their hands. These things are practically happening in today's world.
🍐 According to me and my policy, what I prefer is to carry out my life, its expenses as per my income, not to spend on unwanted things and issues which will end up with a loss. I have to manage with what I have and think about tomorrow and other days. Spending is easy by earning is difficult.
🍐 In most cases, the people run their life on show business even if they don't have enough money in their homes and in their hands. Proudness and big hopes will never bring any benefits, instead it will end up with a massive disaster. Today people never realize their poverty and their living standards.
🍐 Live with what you have, survive with what you have, manage with what you have, proceed with what you have, and never try to go beyond your control.
If you are rich enough, then you can face any expenses, there won't be any problems for you. In case if you are poor and still your financial background is weak, then don't think of having big hopes.
🍐Never try to fall into debt, never borrow money from anyone if you are not in a position to settle down. Never sell anything what you have unless it is vital. Never become greedy on things that you can't afford to buy. Just survive with what you have and be satisfied.
Don't worry, don't become greedy, and don't try to take interest on anything that you can't afford.
