+Luke Kulak Nah dude not even close to musical geniuses like Carter Beauford, Stewart Copeland, Chad Szeliga, or Gavin Harrison to name a few. Matt really lacks that soul kind of feel in his playing. It literally feels like it's just numbers like he said.
+wdrumz Nah man. In my opinion, he has amazing feel mixed with precision and technicality. Mike Mangini is another great drummer but imo has no feel what so ever. Garstka is the perfect mix for me haha
+wdrumz i mean benny greb and jp bouvet are my absolute favorites for musicality (also like gavin harrison) but matt has a style of his own, personally i could never compare his style to anyone elses its so unique. Im just saying that with how well known he is now, hell outshine most 15-20 years from now and i believe that wholeheartedly. Not to say hes "better" than anyone bc thats a difficult claim, but his popularity is growing super fast and for good reason
The guy shouting out sounds like someone's dad shouting at his son doing a drum solo for a school performance 'woo son! that's it son hit them drums! WOO YEAH'...on the other hand Matt is amazing
+Mike Schertenlieb that's great to know. someone like him can't just help himself in this awesome solo. My brain shouts aloud too as I watch Matt's performance.
30 years ago this solo would’ve been considered legendary status...”man that guy Matt, the 2015 Pasic Drum solo where he was playing to the metronome....out of this world...I keep that blue ray in my all time greats cabinet” If we can appreciate this level of greatness like back in the day. That would be amazing. This on the level of not better than what some of the greats back in the days have done.
i've listened to this solo so many Times. So good. I was listening to some vinnie clinic in Berklee and now by getting back to this vidéo i gotta say that Matt has some vinnie blood in his Soul
Awesome how he conveys a feeling of elasticity in his rhythmic feel when playing over the click. Most people want to be able to play along to a click and keep good time. Matt goes beyond that and plays around with the time as if it were a very pliable thing that he can mold into whatever he wants. A true artist who has taken all the knowledge he's acquired and is trying to push the art form even further.
it's been a long-time trend for untrained musicians to say that any trained musician's playing is sterile and has no feeling. and from what i've seen, it's just what some insecure musicians say to try and compensate for never having learned how to play.
They’ve never seen animals then. Cause his feel is unreal in the band and brought them to a whole new level. He has everything from chops, technicality, freestyle flow, creativity, and groove/feel.
Miguel Gutierrez I agree, when you’re any performer and you get crowd encouraging you it’s what it’s all about. If this was in the UK we all just sit there looking miserable.
+Mike Schertenlieb that's awesome the Gerald Hayward was cheering him on like that. Anyone who doesn't know who Gerald is look him up and then you'll see that he can fucking "woo" all he wants. If you get distracted so easily that you couldn't enjoy the entire performance because someone "woo'd" for 45 sec than I don't know what to tell you man. Nice 50 bpm Matt super control
People who say drumming like this PISS ME OFF. And I’m not sorry for saying it. I am a drummer. I like fusion, jazz and have played most styles. There’s something special about the way Matt goes about his playing, and the technicality does NOT kill the soul of the playing. Far from it, frankly, it’s the opposite. The technicality IS the soul of the playing. The technicality is the inner musician going “hey, how can I make this harder to play? How can I come up with something new and wonky that people haven’t seen before?” You know what that is? That’s the love of finding new walls and overcoming them. It’s the love of being a musician, challenging and improving yourself indefinitely. THAT’S what technicality is. It’s not robotic, though it may be mathematical. It’s the musician displaying their love for making something gruelingly difficult to test their limits, and then overcoming their limits by challenging themselves even further. There can be no greater love in music itself
This comment is pure common sense and rationale. I totally agree. It's not called "playing" without a reason. But drummers like Matt take it into the "creative" zone where individuality sculpts new sounds. You can love it or leave it, the decision is totally yours. But raw talent is next to impossible to deny in the witnessing of such talent, whether it agrees with your or not. I like a lot of music and dislike a lot of other. Doesn't make me an arbitor of musical taste; just a listener and proactive participant (musician) in something that brings true love and honesty to my heart and soul. Corney maybe; but true nonetheless. 😎
Kyle Curran Right?!Its like when people have to come over when I’m practicing I tell them please don’t expect a show matter fact you aren’t even gonna understand what I’m playing bcause I’m purposely starting patterns of with the hand or feet I normally don’t as well as putting myself in compromising situations throughout this entire session to challenge myself to create hardships to make it in spots as awkward as humanly possible so when I am playing any and everything else it will be effortless,So if you’re going to be critical or expecting a show watch a concert on TH-cam or go see a movie bcause I got shit to do!!
PLOT TWIST : The shouting in the back is like a "last clap" competition, there´s actually 2 guys shouting, one goes "WHOOOO" and the other immediately "YEAH"
And in my brain he made everything make so much sense with this demonstration without explaining a single god damn thing. My mind is blown and opened to a whole new way of looking at odd meters at the same time.
We must protect Matt Garstka at all costs. He is one of the three most important Matts of this generation: 1. Matt Garstka 2. Matt Damon 3. Matt Greoning
+Joe Corban I can. I am even better than Matt Garstka and I was awarded the drummer of the year award for 2017 and it isn't even 2017 yet. That's how good I am.
If you buy his mastering time course on his website, he left in some bloopers. I love when people as godly as Matt can show their humanity in little ways like that.
My mind is blown after watching this. I knew he was a great drummer but I wasnt expecting this. You can hear the Vinnie Colaiuta influence a lot. Until now, I wouldn't have put him in the same category as a guy like that as far as technical ability, but jesus... this is impressive.
One time I was on facebook. I saw a post about Tommy Lee playing upside down. I was not impressed and said so. Several people were not pleased. I'm just like well he ain't no Peart or Garstka.. They called me a dumbass and I left it be. I found this video. I rest my case
I'm glad to see that I wasn't the only person to attend this clinic that was instantly pissed by the two dudes that kept shouting during his demonstration.
dear matt ' i love your drumming ' your one of the best' hope you can come out with moore covers; im one of your fans; keep up the good drumming; im behind you bud; terry
Matt has great feel. I don't understand what some of you are talking about. You want someone all about numbers? Go listen to Mangini. Amazing drummer, but he lacks feel. Not Matt.
My drumming teacher always tells me that the metronome has to be my friend, not my enemy.
This guy made the metronome his BITCH!
+Giovanni Spada yep!!!
+Giovanni Spada I think he paid that guy to cheer in the audience repeatedly.
Lol
+Andrew Woodcock I dont think.... What he do is impressive and so groovy
***** *whispers* I think he was joking
This demonstrates more so than any other video on youtube why matt garstka will become known as one of the greatest drummers to ever live
Ahhh now i see you are more into those kinds of drummers and styles. Those kinds come off so robotic to me. But to each their own.
***** No I get cha. He is a killer drummer just not a fan of his style. Benny is killer as well. JP not so much.
One guy in the audience just saw the greatest thing that ever happened on any planet ever and demanded the rest of us know it.
Yeah, annoying af 😂 like "yeah, we are aware of what's happening there and we're all impressed, but still manage not to come in our pants"
YEAAH! WOHO!
I can't stop laughing at the "woo hooo, woououooo" thing, that guy has the groove in his voice
The guy shouting out sounds like someone's dad shouting at his son doing a drum solo for a school performance 'woo son! that's it son hit them drums! WOO YEAH'...on the other hand Matt is amazing
+MusicProductionJS Maybe it was Matt's dad ?
+MusicProductionJS ...i was there. the guy "woo"ing is gerald heyward.
+Mike Schertenlieb that's great to know. someone like him can't just help himself in this awesome solo. My brain shouts aloud too as I watch Matt's performance.
Correct - I was two rows behind him... It was hilarious to me!
They mic'd the woo guy!
Panned him hard left.
Ahahaa, I'm dying dude 😂😂😂
And he was in sync with 50bpm track too!
30 years ago this solo would’ve been considered legendary status...”man that guy Matt, the 2015 Pasic Drum solo where he was playing to the metronome....out of this world...I keep that blue ray in my all time greats cabinet”
If we can appreciate this level of greatness like back in the day. That would be amazing. This on the level of not better than what some of the greats back in the days have done.
What if that yelling guy is Tosin Abasi?
lov311ife it’d still be freakin‘ annoying
It'll be fun lol
It does sound like him tbh
HAHAHAHAHA
I want that "Woooo" "Yeah" metronome, what is this app ?
+Vincent Repel with a "Shut up" quarter note pulse !
i've listened to this solo so many Times. So good. I was listening to some vinnie clinic in Berklee and now by getting back to this vidéo i gotta say that Matt has some vinnie blood in his Soul
One of the greatest....ever.

He is permutating and going over the barline, different subdivisions. Insane stuff. Never ever losing the 1 count.
One of the best video I ever seen. Great
Some people are saying that he has no feeling in his playing. Truly? The thing I personally like the most in that guy is the feeling of his music.
it's been a long-time trend for untrained musicians to say that any trained musician's playing is sterile and has no feeling. and from what i've seen, it's just what some insecure musicians say to try and compensate for never having learned how to play.
...it's simple..it's cause they can't feel it
No feeling? They are deaf, obviously.
They’ve never seen animals then. Cause his feel is unreal in the band and brought them to a whole new level. He has everything from chops, technicality, freestyle flow, creativity, and groove/feel.
WHO TF SAID THAT?!
THEY NEED TO BE TARRED AND FEATHERED!
Sometimes it's hard to not give a good "yeah" when you're feeling it. But there is one dude that's feeling it in his prostate.
Thanks so much Vic Firth for uploading this mind blowing solo from one of the greatest drummers on Earth nowadays
Matt for president
hah
are you his son?
Felix Garstka is your last name really garstka?
Ben Shapiro
Everybody leave that dude alone! He's feeling it!!! And you should too!! #TeamGarstka!
Miguel Gutierrez I agree, when you’re any performer and you get crowd encouraging you it’s what it’s all about. If this was in the UK we all just sit there looking miserable.
I can feel it without being an attention whore.
"This is the part where I blow your mind. Metrically."
His drums always sounds so good and unique
Pretty sure they hire a guy to shout when a new beat starts
Did they give him a mic or something?!
+Ben Arthur you're right!
+Jonathan Ziegler lmao
lol
+Ben Arthur or they just lay down some audio clips of a guy yelling in the editing process.
I am so glad u make videos because I have watched every single video since I became a percussionist
Man takes timing to a whole other level
I admit after the first minute or so that guy shouting really started to piss me off...
Terra Tremuit the one dude in the crown just feelin it a bit too much lol like “Richard you’re embarrassing us” hahahaha
that's actually rashied willams lul.
@@ZarekMunoz It's still annoying
Probably an Apple employee

Kyle Curran this!!!

We must protect Matt Garstka at all costs.
He is one of the three most important Matts of this generation:
1. Matt Garstka
2. Matt Damon
3. Matt Greoning
Poor old Matt Halpern
favorite drummer right there.
Wow. Genius, surely one of the best drummers out there
The "oh" during the rest at 7:13 tho.
Julian Psihogios 😂
Literally laughed out loud, never noticed that xD
Hahaha it just happened as I got to this comment

apologizing for loosing Matt
Mr Slave from South Park :D
"Woooo that's slow! ... How many of you can play to that ?"
Hmm I'm guessing no one can?thats why you're up there and we're down here.
+Joe Corban I can. I am even better than Matt Garstka and I was awarded the drummer of the year award for 2017 and it isn't even 2017 yet. That's how good I am.
+Kaka carrot cake the super sand lesbian Can confirm, seen your plaque in the hall of fame 2050
do not overdo it
its not hard if you practice with a metronome... now doing whst he does? Not easy ay any tempo.
You are correct Sir.
That's the best of my generation! No doubts about it...
This is some incredbly interesting rythmical mastery! Amazing!
dude in the back got me so hype!
matt is amazing
One of my favorite drummers complimenting my other favorite drummer how awesome
1:22 even the greats hit their sticks together by accident, reassuring
If you buy his mastering time course on his website, he left in some bloopers. I love when people as godly as Matt can show their humanity in little ways like that.
My mind is blown after watching this. I knew he was a great drummer but I wasnt expecting this. You can hear the Vinnie Colaiuta influence a lot. Until now, I wouldn't have put him in the same category as a guy like that as far as technical ability, but jesus... this is impressive.
Excellent orientation in tempo! Great!
Am I the only person that loved the "woo" guy
yes
I think he's just overwhelmed on Matt's playing bro dang. I'm sure I'd be like him if I were the one in that event.
Troy O'Brien i thought he was almost the best part
Nah, man... He was expressing what I was thinking!!!
Fuckin hilarious Amiright
I just played to 48 BPM. #checkmate

Shout out to the "whooo" "yeahhhhh" guy !
Yes!!!Thisis is!!!U Great drummer!!!
I love that every Matty G video has a Whoo guy, it’s awesome😂😂😅
Matt's neighbors hate this trick.
I thought that maybe one day I would be able to play like Garstka... Then I saw this.
boy I sure love how his chair says chair on it
dear matt ' i love your drumming ' your one of the best' hope you can come out with moore covers; im one of your fans; keep up the good drumming; im behind you bud; terry
That Tempo App though... Best one in the market lol
I love the woo guy, the rest of the audience should be going CRAZY
“YEEEAAAAHHHH WOOOOOOHHHHH”
Matt has great feel. I don't understand what some of you are talking about. You want someone all about numbers? Go listen to Mangini. Amazing drummer, but he lacks feel. Not Matt.
Andrew Romanowski I agree, Matt has tons of feel.
I wonder where he got those "wooh! yeah!" samples...
Awesome!
when a performance live is this nasty, you cannot help but grunt haha. imagine the stank faces on the audience
This was in San Antonio, where I live, how the fuck did I not know about this
This is too good...I suspect sorcery or at the very least, being in cahoots with the devil himself! Amazing...
I'm amazed how for does he has the sticks gripped. It's literally the end of the stick instead of the often mentioned balance point.
Also that China sounds sick as hell. I need it.
Never heard Tama drums sounding this good, anyone know which ones they are please and thank you?
The "woo" yeah" guys are tosin and javier
Fair play!
Still so incredible. He's so popular now this video was hard to find, and it deserves a lot more view fasho!
Some one knows what's the model of this Tama Snare? OmGod! Sounds like a canon! And all the Tama set sounds owesome!
Tama bell brass as I can see from the lugs I think. Set is Tama starclassic performer birch & bubinga!
Thanks so much I appreciate that brother!
I mean, I’ve been playing like 40 years and I just got schooled!
Those tama's sounded so killer.
I just need a backing track of the yelling guy so I can play along!
Killin🔥🔥
Please please please ... can you tell me information about this drum set ??? Specialty this color ??
Actually you are all wrong matt didn't say it but he is just teaching the metronome how to count
Best drummer ever, dead or alive. Anyone who disagrees can fight me.
Matt !!!U sands Great!!! Ya!!!
is there anything he cant do on a kit
jacob drums no
Anybody knows the model of that TAMA? I looooved it
Looks like one of the new versions of the star classic birch/bubinga. Can't tell if the snare is the slp dynamic bronze or a bell bronze
I like the woo guy.
Anyone knows what snare he use?
Its líke Dennis Chambers x 1000. Fucking amaizing, absolute machine..
That moment when he stops hitting those rimshots.... so musical.
what spot particularly?
Listen from 8:05, he keeps it quiet, then builds, quit again, and final climax
Great
I would go whoooaughhhamonchis haleluja baby. Matt is fantastic
What finish is that drums set ??
I was there!!!!!!
Must've been a great experience!
+Adrian Diaz You shouldve slapped the shouting guy
+Carl Mendoza yea he was pretty annoying but then again, if we could we wouldve all been shouting :)
That was just incredible. Damn! 😁
Love his “street voice” lol
The basic breakdown: "Get the F:%* out of bed b*tches, and go practice!!!"
Where to get that kind of metronome?
Does anyone know the name of the tune / backing track at the end? Where it shows the PASIC montage with other drummers? :)
"I'm just gonna divide these pulses into lots of different numbers" you sure do, buddy, you sure do.
lo reproduci como 20 veces jajajaa estoy flasheado con la tecnicaa
Fun
What an absolute beast Matt Garstka is! And how mean does that floor tom sound!!
This is just nasssstyyyy
8:32 when he plays a measure of 7/8 for each pulse, that's hype
@6:26 WE ALL KNOW THATS A FILL TO A MESHUGGAH SONG DAWG, U AINT LURKIN FROM US FAM
