This guy's reaction to Matt's astounding playing alone is worth the sub, but he also broke some of the stuff down very nicely, which is also worth it! Just the random "Yes!" every now and again is adorable, this guy should have more subs lol
idk why but i just watched like 3 videos of drum teachers reacting to matt garstka and i really like that you are the only one to actually break down what hes doing in detail like an actual critique. you deserve the title drum teacher! lol
I try to watch a lot of " --------- Teacher Reacts" videos hoping to get some real insights into what's being done, and I have to say that your analysis is the most comprehensive and helpful that I've seen thus far. Keep up the great work! You've given me a deeper appreciation of Matt G., whose work in AaL, while totally KILLER in that setting, had me thinking of him more as a Crush Monster!
You’re the first real analysis I’ve seen of Matt’s drumming. Other reaction/analysis videos just pause at random points and don’t give meaningful comments. Nice video!
His playing of "lippincott" from his drumeo performance is soooooo freakin good. I know its not a "solo" but check it out anyways lol.. He DOES throw in some real treats
Great video, I love how enthusiastic you are and how you can almost instantly figure out the things he's doing! Great stuff! Matt is definitely on the highest top with other best drummers of the world. This guy writes drum parts to AAL as a breakfast and not even think about it really. To me there's basically four levels of instrumental skill. Beginner, advanced and true professionals. Then there's the highest tier on top which consists of savants like Garstka. It's not just that the playing is pretty much as far as physically possible, but being able to come up with incredibly musical and technical stuff that compliments whatever they're playing and not even think about it. It just comes naturally at that point. Ofc none of the savants just started playing right out of womb, but they started practicing right about then and never stopped haha.
Matt and I went to Berklee at the same time. Hes so versatile and knowledgeable. His project “Victoria” is something to really check out. I would highly recommend reacting to Chris Dave Trios live version of “Nefertiti”. I think youd really dig it and have a lot of great analysis
Eric Byrd i only went for two semesters and then started working enough to drop out. Luckily for my initial placement test i tested out of the first two years of drum course, mainly rock/pop and jazz classes so i spent a year focusing more on latin music before leaving.
WoW Garey. I love Matt's musicality in his solo performances. I got to see Matt live in a drum clinic in a very small and intimate studio. Maybe a 75-80 people, He blew all of us away. I also got to meet him and chat. What a very humble and genuine man. I am very impressed with his character. He is going places for sure and will be on top of the food chain one day. Thanks for this one Garey. Rock On Matt Garstka
If you haven't heard his other playthroughs on youtube, go do so. What's incredible isn't just his ability to modulate, but his ability to fill in between ridiculous changes and have them make sense
Love this video man. Thank you! You should do a video on Larnell Lewis and his solo on The City Lights. Most musical and creative solo I think I've heard.
I would love to see you react to matt garstka’s drum play through of arithmophobia. Its a bit more of his usual style of drumming, at least in the context of the band he plays for. Animals as leaders.
Bring back that Bruford frame behind you, Gary! And, please, you have to do a video react to any Kiko Freitas drum solos! This Brazilian guy is out of this planet...
I remember when I saw my first video of Matt Garstka. It was love at first sight. This guy literally has it all. He's musically versatile, technical, creative, tasteful, and dynamic. Not to meantion his taste in drums and cymbals is amazing. As far as drummer reccomendations, I would say check out Chris Dave, Mike Mitchell, Anika Nilles, and JD Beck.
I discovered Matt via Animals in 2011 with Weightless and have been a huge fan ever since. I was lucky enough to see him play here in Denver just a couple years ago. Me and 500 other musicians all with our jaws on the floor. (If my memory serves, that album was recorded with a drum machine but Matt was hired to replicate it live. Even more impressive!)
Love your videos! You should check out Aric Improta “blur-lights in the videodrome” and maybe do a few videos on that 30 minute solo he has on TH-cam. Amazing work. Thanks for all the knowledge!
This guy is great!!! Thank you Garey for all of these analysis videos. They are always so inspirational! * Drummers, tell your friends to check out this channel too! We are all in this together.
Hooorray! Thanks for doing this, man! Awesome videos! But i´d hoped that you would analize some of the animals as leaders performances. I'll stay tuned, very nice tho!
Matt’s interdependence is absolutely ridiculous! I know he’s practices an ungodly number of hours and measures to get where he is, and I wish I could have that kind of time and dedication to go further in my skills. In the meantime, I’ll keep enjoying his insanity 🤘🏼
Shout out to Alastair Taylor who has written amazing music accompanying drum solos, including this one. th-cam.com/channels/DOx7va1CQVBnpzlcqALZLQ.htmlvideos
That last fill is actually 1 up 1 down! It's RKLKRKLK, but his feet are playing a single stroke roll on the offbeats. I've seen Steve Smith do this often
Searh for "Nils "Dominator" Fjellström - Dark Funeral - Vobiscum Satanas (Drumcam)" Not a solo like you usually look at, but maybe something that deserve a reaction? :)
Subbed! Love your enthusiasm. Matt is super fkin good, gotta check out some of the animals of leaders songs he does. They're effectively massive solos!
Matt is a an absolute groove machine. He's got such a delicate touch and fantastic dynamics. Wouldn't guess he's in a prog metal band :) Although it's not too far off from jazz really.
Hey, I think that the two greatest singers that also play the drums are. Don Henley and Phil Collins. what do you think. maybe you can react to them. thanks
I ran into your channel and I must say I love your enthusiasm! If you could react to George Kollias - Aeons of Burning Galaxies I'd be grateful. Good job. (:
*React to Mick Tucker:* th-cam.com/video/ysCA0cRXFLo/w-d-xo.html Criminally underrated, he should have been considered one of the greatest drummers of all time!
Blows me away how fast you can decipher what he's playing. I've been playing for a long time but I'm so slow when it comes to that skill.
Lol love your enthusiastic reaction
This guy's reaction to Matt's astounding playing alone is worth the sub, but he also broke some of the stuff down very nicely, which is also worth it!

Yeah he plays in a group called Animals As Leaders a super 3 piece prog metal +

Dude is absolutely phenomenal. Been following his bad for YEARS. Love how excited you were while watching him play!
First time watcher here, and I have to say you are the most informative, yet entertaining, drum reaction video guy on here. Love it!
Love this guy...never heard of him before...great groove and lightning fast chops!
you're in for a treat, MG is the Vinnie C of today's era.
Check out his drumeo stuff.. ridiculous lol
Hahaha those are strong words!
It's great to meet new drummers through your youtube channel. Thanks!
I love this guy!! BOTH MATT and the drum teacher!! Love his input!
Love your little breakdowns after! Keep up the awesome videos! Cheers from Minnesota!
I love the moment when he messed up at 6:30 and keeping it in, so genuine

PLEASE do another review of Matt Garstka, this was so cool
His band will blow you away.
This is what a "reaction" video is. And I like your inputs and analysis. BTW, I'm a simple man, I see Matt Garstka, I like...
If you haven't heard his other playthroughs on youtube, go do so. What's incredible isn't just his ability to modulate, but his ability to fill in between ridiculous changes and have them make sense
Wicked chops. Groove. Pocket. What's the word? Oh yeah, WOW!

He's very fun
Dave weckl is probably matts biggest idol good shout
It's actually Gary Novak :) heard him mention it in a podcast but weckl is a big one for him for sure.
@@TheZooNinjaS thats odd ive watched a lot of matt interviews and hes said dave in all of them
god damn larry david is really knowledgeable about drums and a joy to listen to.
It's funny you mention Weckl as Matt's mentioned him as a huge influence and someone he keeps coming back to.

A bit of a side project apart from Animals as Leaders is his work promoting Meinl in a trio called Gem.
The last lick is actually RH RF LH LF rather than 2 up 2 down. Really fun to play!
That last fill is actually 1 up 1 down! It's RKLKRKLK, but his feet are playing a single stroke roll on the offbeats. I've seen Steve Smith do this often
Yes that is a very effective way to get your hand/foot singles really fast. Vinnie is the master at this as are others. Thanks for sharing!
