I'm just in love seeing these old trucks brand new. As someone born in the 2000s, I've never been able to see these trucks in such a prestine state. Its really cool.

It’s crazy how much cars and trucks advanced from just the early 80s to the late 80s. The early 80s was essentially the same as the 70s but by the late 80s cars and trucks were using turbos, fuel injection, ECUs, abs, etc all things that were rare in the early 80s

I admire how essentially this is a Silverado cab, but enhanced with a new fascia and lifted to give it a Semi look.

here in Brazil we had some chevy trucks too, It had a similar design, but with other cabin, beyond diesel and gasoline versions, we had alcohol version too, nowadays these alcohol and gasoline trucks was converted to natural gas, or had their engines replaced (usually mercedes benz engines)

Agree, I always thought that was a rather clever application of parts commonality that no doubt kept costs down. A passenger cab already exists, so let’s use that.
It's amazing what gearing can do. If you were around at the time you know the speed limit was only 55 back then, yet most of these trucks struggle to make it to 50. If there was a little grade the driver would be rowing through the gears, the engine would be screaming near Red line, and the truck would be going like 20 mph lol

I grew up around older trucks like these. Chevy and internationals. You could do 60-65 of you were lucky. But the speed limit was only 55 so you were good. And didn’t need the hp to maintain 70mph. I love all the “kids” that buy those “retro” trucks and want them to go faster or so what a modern truck can do - which they just can’t. Totally different technology for a different application. In 1984 my dad bought some international dt466’s with a true ten-speed in a single axle dump truck at 35k gVW. He had them over built in the drive line and he turned up the pumps to make about 275hp. Those trucks were rocket ships compared to anything else. Very rare at the time yet common today. Compared to to todays trucks he and I still have and run three of them.
It seems to me going up a grade with those older engines, that it would have been far more efficient to run the engine no higher than a speed where peak torque was produced. Redlining the engine up hill at 20 mph is not taking advantage of the torque.
That orange and white stake body was a sharp looking truck.
I loved the big blocks paired with those whiny Allison Automatics...Those were great memories. I rode in a few Chevy Thomas buses and a couple of GMC Bluebirds.

Just learning how these trucks back then hauled and pulled the weight they did with the low numbers of horsepower and torque. I have a Chevy 3.0 l duramax that has 277 HP and 460 lb of torque which is much higher numbers and those trucks were hauling 24,000 to 50,000 pounds of weight. That was educational thank you.
Remember. These are SAE Gross HP numbers as well.
That means they were measured with no accessories, no air cleaner or exhaust headers, not even a water pump!
They had to switch to SAE Net for passenger cars in 1972 which was a big reason horsepower number fell so fast in the mid-70s (not just unleaded gas and emission) but I guess they were still allowed to use them for trucks… probably because of the accessories (air pumps, PTOs, hydraulic pumps, etc) that you might install.
So the 454 grew up to be a fuel injected 496 with 350 Net HP. That would have really set the world on fire in 1981.
I blame emissions. We went form big blocks and high hp. To freakin turds until computers caught up.
@Patrick Baptist although emissions equipment strangles the diesels too I have to agree with you. Even modern v10s in those big rv campers are no match for a diesel. You’ll pay more but It’s worth it in the long run.
Hence a 75’ motor home with a 454 and 37k just worn flat out, I’d like to find a bunch of those old brick shaped campers and put diesels in them, even some manual transmissions with a 2 speed rear axle. That’s a little crazy but it sure would pull good and be fun to drive.
Have a 8.1 2001 suburban 330k miles and it doest care was used tp pull heave construction trailers ive pulled over 15k with it and it doest care its a beast

I had an 8.2 Fuel Pincher V8 engine (naturally aspirated) in a huge GM-chassis step van (86). I liked that engine and it ran well but had very smelly/dirty exhaust and was not very efficient or powerful. I liked how low it idled and the sound of it. Had a very stout Allison bolted on the back. I think that engine was in a lot of school busses at the time. They required rare expensive tools to adjust the injectors which is one reason they disappeared. No one could get the tools to keep them running or running well. These trucks of this era are just really nice looking in my opinion. I especially like those ones with the massive rectangular grill over the much smaller row of 8 rectangular headlights. A very unique and cool look, in my opinion. Thank you so much for posting this great video!

Back in the 90s, we had a new to us,1985 Brigadier 6 cylinder diesel with a 9 speed tranny and a 2 speed rear axle. My boss picked it up at a military auction. Can you believe they actually bothered to put cup holders in those trucks? The suspension was so rough you felt every single bump. It drove so rough, I probably spilled more coffee in that darn truck than I drank. 🤣 I told my boss, "If we don't get an air ride seat, I'm leaving. He just bought the truck, and he said it couldn't be that bad. I said ok,well go drive it for a couple hours. He came back about 20 minutes later, and I got the new seat about a week later. 😆 and a new CD player, but you really couldn't play any CD's because the ride was so rough that they were constantly skipping, and it was annoying. He was the best boss and just an all-around good person. Even after I quit to persu a different career. I still stopped in at quittin time once in a while to have a few beers with those guys.

I drove the GMC version, the Top Kick. It had the Cat 3208 and a 5x2. It must have been the standard 3208 because... damn was that thing slow. 😀
you are lucky 😂😂😂 here in brazil things was worst, they uses perkins engines and a inline 6 (292) for alcohol and gasoline versions, nowadays almost all of them had their engines replaced for others like mercedes benz, in early 80s chevy was the last manufacturer to offer gasoline engines here, at the time conventional cabins was obsolete in favor of cabovers, in 90s they tried sell conventional cabs (gmc kodiak) but It was a failure, both cabin and engine (cat 3116) had lot of problems, after that gm stop sell trucks here

These were some awesome looking trucks, it's a shame they don't offer modern similar looking trucks with modern upgrades ofcourse.

I used to drive a flat bed GMC Top Kick at work! It was a 6x6 It was as tall as the freightliner Cab over they owned! It was a cool truck!

Some fascinating facts offered here. Also an 8.2 liter engine should really make much more than 165 horsepower- like twice that amount of horsepower. Ditto for torque ratings.

And also remember that these are gross ratings. Today, all specifications are given as SAE net which means the accessory drive belt along with power steering pump, a/c condenser, and other parasitic drag losses are factored in to the stated figure. So the 165 HP is actually about 20% higher than would be reported for the same engine today.
those were old school Diesels. A 10 yr newer Cummins 5.9 with 12 Valves was only 180hp and around 400 torque.

1980 only they offered a 4-53t in the C50-60 trucks. about 2000 produced.
4-71T had as much torque as those other donks, and a 653N &653T had way more, Chevy just did not think🤷♂️🤦♂️

When the announcer said that the "Fuel Pincher" should be used for moderate loads/stop-and-go driving, that was a COMMANDMENT and not a suggestion. Those engines were under-engineered pieces of carp, with a warranty replacement rate of 50%, so bad that when Rodger Penske bought Detroit Diesel in 1988 he specifically told GM to he did not want them.

8.2 Detroit is the most efficient way to turn Diesel Fuel into noise and smoke. Hopefully they are all in the junkyard.
I think you're thinking of the 2 stroke diesel ones. The 8.2 was 4 stroke and most of them did end up in the junkyard, I mean 165hp with 500ci is 3 ci per horse power which is awful even for 80s diesel standards.

Refigure the numbers with diesel at 7.49 per gallon and gas at 5.49. I live in california if you didn't already guess.
my ex had a diesel, all she did was make noise, and explains the lack of spark, she was a definite medium duty criteria, but she had a great rear end, no supplemental restraints tho, and she always leaked... 🤔😑⚠️🚗🚘

It’s funny now the Silverado 1500 have a 2.7t that make 310hp and 430ft-lbs only 2 engines for this 1981 truck had more torque back then. Still the 2.7 is not enough to be considered a truck engine by most.

The yellow truck has the 8.2 litre fuel pincher diesel. The red truck is the Chevy Kodiak which has the big grill and the quad rectangular headlights with a Caterpillar 3208. There were two 8.2 litre diesel engines. Normally aspirated and turbocharged. The diesel engine is used for high mileage 12.000 miles (20.000 kilometers) or more per year, the gasoline 12.000 miles (20.000 kilometers) or less.

@@MitzvosGolem1 The 5.7 litre gasoline engine is very legendary. Around the mid 1980's the carburetor was replaced with electronic fuel injection which is more reliable.

Yep. Those emission systems can be stupid expensive. Couple years ago we had a truck and the DPF went out. Apparently it needed that, the DEF warmer, also needed all new lines because the DEF crystallized, uh... What a mess. My boss ended up deleting it and they had to get it retuned and everything. It was almost $5,000
Now this is what I care about hp tq price of fuel maintenance costs I could care less about a damn 20 inch touch screen sensors and so on

I did not realize they were using a engine out of a Silverado 1500 and 2500 to power a top kick. That goes to show how capable of these motors really were. Also I did not realize the 6.0 motor was that old. The 5.3 is a great motor but I think they should bring the 5.7 back as an added option.
Not the same 6.0 and the 5.3 is more or less a modernized 5.7

Not true regarding the 5.7L LS.
The 6.0 they talk about here is the 366ci tall deck big block, has absolutely nothing to do with the modern LS based 6.0. The 5.3 will knock the socks off of a 5.7 truck, they're gone for a reason, and they'll never come back for emissions reasons alone if not anything else, remember standing behind a 350 truck even from the 90s and just smelling it? Great engines, just out of date.
@@tommyw.9424 My 98 Z71 Silverado 5.7 vortec dragged my 05 Z71 5.3 backwards like nothing and tows my car trailer better than the 5.3 unless that 5.3s rpms are through the roof that 05 5.3 vortec was a gutless torque less wonder.

First hand experience with this. My grandparents got one used in the late 80s for their hardware store pickup and deliveries. My dad would help them with pickups since they were aging. I would hear him complain about how slow it was even before they loaded it down. In fact he had to modify his route to avoid a slight uphill grade after a stop light because the truck would barely make it up the hill. I don't think they sold too many with the 4.8. It was loud and sounded like it struggled everywhere it went loaded or not.

@@hfd268 nothing on the brake that I can remember. I was only about 7 or 8 at the time but I do remember the loudness of it especially when loaded.
I know medium duties used to all be pretty slow, but it's absolutely insane that they sold mediums with the 4.8 six. That was a dog engine in a pickup truck!

These trucks were shot after 3 years. Yet they managed to stay on the road for years. They were underpowered, loud, lousy ride, uncomfortable seating, hot as hell in the summer, cold as a witches tit in the winter, and had poor visibility. I remember the first time I drove a Mitsubishi Fuso and fell in love. I never drove those American-made wrecks ever again.

In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!

Boy, did these trucks stink. 8.2 was pretty close to the worst diesel ever. Cat 3208 was better in its day but cheapskates that spec'ed these never ordered it, the 8.2 was cheaper. Gas engines almost better in these chassis. Either way, foot mashed to the floorboard, heat burning through the bottom of your shoe. These were the bad old days and the grille on the larger ones, ugly as a mud fence. How did that monstrosity leave the drawing board.
Ford cab/chassis were somewhat better but GM tried to sabotage them by selling the same lousy 8.2, open the hood of the Ford and the blue GM square staring back at you.
