I had the choice between this and the 1.8g, and chose the d model despite not having as nice bokeh - it's a much more realistic rendering of skin, in my opinion, than the g model. The g smooths skin out (some people like this), whereas the d model more closely follows the 105 f2.5's realistic rendering.
Good review..i just have bought that Nikkor 85mm f1.8 afd + its ori metal hood all of em made in jpan ver for 320KRW.. (used in a mint condition), and mounting on my D7100..looks great really compact combination as well as nice bargain for its quality. I think it's a very good lens, nice bright glass & superb mechanical construction. Won't regret.
Hello there, do you know "Photo SFXart Tricks" (search on Google for it)? On their website you can watch a good free video showing the right way to make fantastic pictures. It made it possible for Daniel to shoot photographs that have that jaw-dropping-effect when you look at them. It might help you out also.

There aren't many reviews for this lens and I appreciate you making a review for it.

Fantastic tip on the lens cap going on the lens hood.
Excellent review. Thank you for the cap tip as well.
nice call with the lens cap over the hood
I do the same thing with the hood and larger cap on my 85 1.8D.
Vero useful, in 2021 too. Thanks
At 1.8 the background supposed to be out of focus(bokeh)...what am I missing here?
He meant that the bokeh was not ideally "creamy and smooth", due to being of lower quality and the number of aperture blades.
Number of blades? It has 9. What does the g lens have ? 7!
good review - appreciate the opinions and insight.
question: is the nikkor 85mm 1.8D an FX lens or DX lens?
Full frame. This lens came out about 1987 way back into the film days.
85mm f1.8D u can use both of DX and FX
most kinds you can. none of the test images where processed.
