    Amon's ability was explained in the Art Books. As we've seen in the last few episodes of Book 1 of ATLA, waterbenders are able to heal by using water as a catalyst. Healing is the manipulation of chi inside the body and it works by "shifting" this chi where is needed. Amon used the same concept, using his knowledge of chi blocking. He manipulates the chi and completely shuts off the chi paths by using the blood inside his victims. How metal is that?

That’s also the reason that these kind of things aren’t seen in the shows, because they are both targeting young children and teenagers and killing people by freezing their blood is a bit too much to put in a kids show. The interesting thing about avatar is that the characters are not one dimensional at all... Not only they have realistic character arc but they age too. Aang gets older and becomes a father, fire lord Ozai is mentioned to have been just a cute kid (his childhood picture is in the story too), avatar Roku is shown to be a normal teenager.... And Tarrlok was a kid with a pure heart too
    Which is uncomfortable at first because most writers and creators don't do such a thing, the realism is weird you could say...

    • @peters4115
      @peters4115 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I mean some shows do do it but not typical for a kids show. Avatar has always done a great job of introducing complicated or more adult themes in a digestible way to a younger audience.

    • @silvereyes242
      @silvereyes242 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Well let’s be honest here, Ozai is pretty one dimensional. His only character trait is “I’m evil” and he has no backstory other than “I want power” and no motivation beyond “I need power”. He served his function well as a threatening villain for the shows climax but there’s nothing remotely complex, nuanced or detailed about his characterisation. Azula on the other hand managed to be both complicated and threatening, unlike her father was written.

    • @ominouspuppet4556
      @ominouspuppet4556 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@silvereyes242 Well it isn’t far fetched for someone to behave that way, considering his upbringing as a prince as well as being the second son who had an inferiority complex simmering over the years. Comics go as far as to show him as being a psychologically abusive person( usually stemming from such a complex and ego). Besides Ozai is shown as genuinely believing in his own greatness. People can behave that way in real life if given the chance. I would say it would be unrealistic if everyone had ultra complex motives, as they say “some people just want to rule the world”.

    • @silvereyes242
      @silvereyes242 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ominouspuppet4556 I never said Ozai is “unrealistic” I’m simply saying he isn’t particularly interesting or nuanced. Having a villain be psychologically abusive with a massive ego? Wow how original, I’ve never seen that before. He’s just a big baddie. Unfortunately Ozai never really gets any real explanation or narrative focus to flesh out his identity, so ultimately we never find out why he is the way he is. Saying he has an “inferiority complex” with Iroh sounds like a great idea on paper, but that’s never stated or implied to be the trigger for his behaviour. We don’t get anything with Ozai. He’s a threat but he’s two dimensional.

    I’m gonna say my take on the whole mako thing. Mako is still very young, without a full grasp of how to deal with his own feelings. As we have seen, mako indeed loves asami and Korra. Now, loving 2 girls at the same time is very difficult and we see that constantly from mako. He can’t control the way he feels, so what happened just happened. I don’t think he’s being a player at all bc he truly cares for the both of them. It’s just that his feelings for Korra is getting the better of him. He doesn’t wanna hurt either of them so he made some dumb choices. I’m not excusing what happened, and yea it was annoying to see that. All I’m sayin is that I do understand mako. So I don’t think he doesn’t care about their feelings, he just doesn’t know how to deal with loving the both of them. Is he a loveable dumbass? U bet. So, you know how qi blockers use fast jabs to neutralize bending? What happens is that the jabs block the person's qi path temporarily; in Amon's case, he uses bloodbending to permanently sever the qi pools to the qi paths and thereby causing the person to permanently loose their bending. IMO, Katara could have developed an anti-severing technique if she had developed more her bloodbending, but because she didn't fully understand it and just labeled it "dark", she just didn't. Can you imagine how much good you could do if you combined water healing with bloodbending? I mean think about it: you could literally regenerate cells in your body or purifying blood or even heal bone marrow to prevent leukemia...
    And....
    ...Spoiler...
    Kyoshi did combine earthbending with semi-bloodbending to keep an "inventory" of all her cells thereby being able to slow down the aging process so she lived for over 200 years.

      That is kinda brilliant actually! But I guess it might have spoiled the shocking reveal of Tarrlok saying “Amon is my brother”. Because we don’t know any bloodbender in the show, and the title would clearly refer to brothers who were bloodbenders. Still, pretty good idea though! If the backstory was shown an episode after the reveal though, it would work splendidly.

    Amon uses blood bending to sever chi paths, similar to how chi blockers use pressure points to block bending temporarily. But his blood bending abilities allow him to sever the chi path completely, causing permanent damage.

    According to an interview I watched, Dante Basco came prepared with a specific voice he wanted to use when he auditioned for Zuko. But the voice casting people kept asking him to tweak the voice and eventually he just read the lines using his normal voice and they were like "yeah, that's perfect".

    I've always assumed that the way Amon takes away bending, is by some sort of internal chi blocking. Like a pressure point within the body that can only be reached with bloodbending.

    If you can get over the illusion of the moons phases (unblocking the 3rd eye/light chakra) you can see that the moon is always "full". Bloodbending just like any other skill, if you practice it enough, it becomes second nature.

    Made it to this episode to tell you - thank you, guys! In your previous episodes, you speculated "... some sort of permanent chi blocking". I was breaking my head over how bloodbending can be used to remove bending. Your words helped me see that with bloodbending, Amon clogges chi paths, same as Azula clogged Aang's flow of cosmic energy. Which raises another question - is that really permanent or will it wear out like traditional chi block, only it would take longer?

  • @daisuke910

    If you practice a technique every single day for years, it will get refined. I dont think anyone practice bloodbending as much as they did.

    I’d say that the reason why Korra isn’t able to go into the Avatar state nearly as soon as Aang is more due to the fact that Aang went through so much so early in his life. The first time we saw Aang go into the avatar state chronologically was when he nearly drowned, and that was just to freeze himself. After that, he spent 100 yrs in the Avatar state which I feel is really telling of why he is more able to accept it. He had literally spent most of his life in the Avatar state than not.
    If anything, Korra’s struggle is leaning more to the normal side of the spectrum, when it comes to getting into the Avatar state. Any perceived struggle could be due to her relatively chill upbringing (terrible pun, sorry not sorry) free from danger but another reason I like is that her soul is still recovering from Aang’s life, like some sort of trauma.

    Side note: Republic city is more 20s/art deco style. The Satomobile is reminiscent of a Ford Model T and the fighter planes are similar to those used in ww1. Everytime Kenny says its "50s style", I die a little inside 😢

    Regarding Aang's mastery of the avatar state, he was just incredibly gifted and powerful. Normally the avatar can't access the avatar state so early in development, that usually happens around 16-17, like Korra. But Aang was special in that he was so connected to the spiritual side of things, and thus more in tune with the avatar state. He couldn't really control it, but it activated when he really needed it because of all this, and when he did so, it was just the purest form of raw power because technically, the avatar state is ALL avatars coming together with their combined wisdom to do something incredible, without giving away too many spoilers.

    Hey some one may have mentioned this on the patron but I will say it anyway, for the first half of the 2nd season Nickelodeon made the creators switch to a different animation studio (cause $) so in that first half the background art and fight animation will look "different." just incase you did not know. love the reactions so far.
