    I genuinely don't remember if it was explained or not, but my headcanon for Amon's abilities is that he figured out a way to use bloodbending to permanently block a person's chi pathways, preventing them from bending again. He's definitely not taking their bending so much as he is blocking it, like clogging a pipe or locking a door.

    In the DVD commentary track for the next episode, the creators talked about the idea of Asami and General Iroh II getting together, and Mako confronting them about their age gap, since General Iroh is in his 30s (Mako is 19 IIRC). • @patrickcromwell7554
    @patrickcromwell7554 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Someone once asked me how it was possible for Amon/Noataq to LEARN to take someone's bending away. Aang only get the knowledge from an ancient Lion Turtle who passed the knowledge on "spiritually." It is a kind of unanswered question actually, but I can only assume that in his years of travel - before he re-emerged AS Amon - he did a LOT of research. Aang was just the first one we SEE doing it, but the fact is that there were hundreds - possibly even thousands - of Avatars before Aang. Who's to say that NONE of them ever learned this same ability?? And if another one HAD learned it, then maybe, just maybe, there is a record of it somewhere. Perhaps Amon even learned that it was a very ancient bending technique (which it actually IS - spirit bending). And since the spirit is actually connected to a person's nervous system (Aang getting his spine popped back into place during his fight with Ozai and his body readjusting and summoning the Avatar powers) perhaps Amon discovered that bending someone's blood can reproduce the same effect as Chi Blocking, just on a more permanent basis. That's what I suspect Amon learned. Advanced Chi Blocking.

    • @nathancollins1715
      @nathancollins1715 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The implication is that he's using blood bending to internally block people's chi. It isn't truly spirit bending since it's a purely physical phenomenon. I do wish that they would have explained this in the last episode, since it would strengthen the connection between Amon and his chi blockers and potentially leave some watchers less confused.

    • @patrickcromwell7554
      @patrickcromwell7554 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nathancollins1715 to he honest I never once thought that Amon was "Sprit Bending" exactly, I mean Aang would have been the one to actually do THAT. But since blocking someone's Chi is essentially just damaging nerve endings, I always assumed that Amon Blood bent in order to do THAT. Seeing as even in Avatar Healing couldn't fix anyone attacked by Ty Lee, they just had to wait it out. Waterbender Healing was most likely able to speed up recovery but That's about it. The show TRIES to explain things (sort of), but does a bad job. Thety say that Yakon was able to Bloodbend Psychically. Like the combustion benders who use Fire bending psychically to create clusters of micro explosions. But the lack of actual detailed explanations have led to many web articles making wild claims.
      Like here's one as an example. There is a theory that After Yakon died his widow remarried and had two sons: Tonroq and Unaloq; essentially making Korra related to Amon and Tarloq and Amon. Another crazy theory is that Yakon is actually Sokka's son. which makes absolutely zero sense since Yakon appeared to be OLDER than Sokka in all the flashbacks. Yet another theory (one that fits if you choose to believe it) is that Yakon is an unwanted and unloved son of Hama, the Blood-bender who forced Katara to learn. The theory is that at some point she gave birth to a son and because the father was Fire Nation she just abandoned him. Finally there's a theory that suggest that Unaloq and Tonroq are Sokka and Suki's sons, making Katara actually Koraa's Aunt.
      So many theories with so little thought put in to the actual show's evidence is very easy to find.

    • @nathancollins1715
      @nathancollins1715 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@patrickcromwell7554 Yeah, I always find "X character is secretly related to Y character!" theories to be a bit stupid, because they actively make your world smaller. If every single main character is related in some way, then the show amounts to a family drama. And worse, it doesn't actually serve to make the characters better or deeper in any meaningful way. How does Amon being Korra's secret uncle make either character more interesting? It doesn't.

    • @patrickcromwell7554
      @patrickcromwell7554 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nathancollins1715 right??? Although the connection between Ham and Yakone is one that I think fits; especially in the flashback scene where he tells his sons that they come from a line of "powerful Blood-Benders" As far as we know from the shows Hama INVENTED Blood-Bending. so the idea that she may have had several unwanted children, making an entire bloodline of Blood-benders IS very intriguing to me. I would actually love to SEE that side story if it exists.
      But in general I agree. FINDING links to connect EVERYONE to someone else is just lacking in imagination. It has to be done carefully and intelligently. The theoretical Hama and Yakone link?? Intelligent, because they aren't main characters and it would be FUN to imagine Hama 10 - 15 years younger training her secret army of Blood-Bending children.

    I'm of the opinion that only the individual can have their bending taken away. So When Aang took Yakon's bending ONLY HE was affected. Any children he might have are still able to become benders because it's balance. If Aang took away the bending of an entire family forever until the bloodline dies out, that's NOT balance; that's Aang playing God. like with Ozai. Even though HIS bending was taken away, any new children he would potentially have COULD be benders. Besides children aren't necessarily the same as their Parents. Amon doesn't actually WANT to rule Republic City from the Underworld Like Yakon did, he just wants to FORCE full equality for benders AND non-benders. I mean it's kind of clear that Republic City is under Bender control. ONLY benders are on the Ruling Council. It's - by default - an unfair leadership status.

    • @starkid910
      @starkid910 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Oh no, a 17 year old character is naïve? And systems of power tend to adapt to try to hold onto it instead of deconstructuring to address the roots of the problem? Like how it's taken multiple waves of feminism to continue to advance egalitarian rights, and we've still got issues? It's almost like art imitates life and life imitates art.
      So, snark aside, you're right that it wouldn't fix the problem forever, but that doesn't mean people in-universe aren't willing to accept it as a solution. It definitely was sufficient to stop specifically the organization running the Equalists, but I don't think anyone's pretending that no one holds any anti-bending sentiment anymore. It's fertile grounds for future stories to sprout from, a historical event to reference in when describing the long march to freedom.

    I'm not entirely mad at how they explained Amon's ability, but gosh wouldn't it be way cooler if he really was a non-bender who was granted these powers by some upset powerful spirit? He's ideologically right and provides a much needed perspective into the world dominated by benders.

      I don't think that would have worked, because I assume the writers wrote the whole yakone and backstory storyline first and then traced back from there to Amon, Tarlokk and everything.

    I’ll admit the first couple times i watched Korra i was really into this episode. Years later i’m a lot less interested. The twist is fine. The Tarloq becomes more interesting which he has needed. I don’t like what they do with Amon. But it is where it is.
