Been there, done that. Of course, after fixing the water pump, the restored water flow promptly found the hole in the radiator. Water tight after that was replaced too.
Btw, mine's also a 97 XJ, same color too.
Owned it since brand new. Only 315k miles.

I have a 98 Jeep Cherokee sport. I guess I can do my water pump too. Mine's starting to leak so it needs replacing it's still the original. Thanks for the video

Great Job! Looks like a prime candidate for a good coolant flush.

Great video. I’m new to wrenching myself so I learn a ton from your channel. Not just how to replace the part but how to know when it needs replacing.

Had to do this repair on my XJ after 120k miles. Took fans out and the cross frame (since I was doing radiator while I was in there). Did water pump, thermostat and housing, radiator, cross pipe and coolant flush runs like a dream. Nice work Sasha and Dale!

@@JeepSolid back to the live chat I was saying before I changed my water pump it would leak little bit after a 30 minute drive and when I shut off my Jeep at home it would leak out of the little hole in the water pump and and a hour later I checked it and I could wiggle the pulley on the water pump I know right away the bearing’s in the water pump was getting bad and it would leak out of the little hole in the water pump. I changed it out and a year later I haven’t had any leaks with it

@@JeepSolid and if you need a new radiator I found one on amazon it brass and copper radiator.
When I 1st got my 92 xj it had a brass and copper radiator and mine went to leaking and got the new on amazon and it’s been good

It's awesome to teach your daughter to do these kind of things. Before long, she'll be on her own and calling you on the phone for help. I have experienced this with my 24 year old son, who is a Firefighter in Baltimore, I now live in Florida. God bless you and your family.

Congrats Sasha, a water pump is not an easy job on an XJ. For future reference, removing the air box gives a lot of room for working/removing the PS pump. Also, removing the overflow line from the rad cap makes it easier to remove the electric fan. Again, great job! God bless and stay well.

Great vid. This will be a solid reference for when I have to do this. I need to replace the upper and lower radiator hose, the thermostat housing, and the water pump. How old is the radiator in her Jeep? Your coolant looked pretty brown so that could be your radiator or heater core showing its age...

  • @8avexp

I've changed the water pump more than once on my.'88. On my '88, the idler pulley is next to the a/c compressor and is not adjustable. The power steering pump itself serves as a belt tensioner.

Can't believe you put a new water pump on there without flushing the entire system. Clearly it's been a very long time since it was flushed because the coolant is the color of rusty water. If you're going to teach her, teach her the RIGHT way. Flush the entire system & change all the hoses. Oh, and unless your '97 is different from my' 99, there's absolutely no need to remove the power steering pump!
