As others have said, you don't need a mat on glass or acrylic platters. I use a carbon fiber record brush on my acrylic platter to remove dust before placing the record on the platter. I use a second brush on the record itself before playing. If you do use a mat you should probably adjust the VTA to account for it.
I love Metallica. I dont listen to them so often these days, but hey. I had the records, they rocked like crazy and I still love them because of their sick energy and sweet music. Kings in this music space.. 👍
I get the logic of including a less expensive cartridge. My $1200 technics 1500c came with a $100 2m red while my $600 U-turn came with a 2m blue. I think at a certain point, buyers will want to select their own higher end cartridge. By including a good quality, but less expensive cartridge, it lets the buyer have a good experience out of the box without making the cartridge(that may get replaced) a significant part of the purchase price.
I was fortunate to be at one of their first shows in 1983 when they OPENED for twisted sister at the fountain casino in New Jersey. Been a fan from the beginning. Enjoy that table. It’s pretty bad ass.
If you prefer the sound with the felt and want to retain the turntables looks, simply buy 2 copies of each album and stick a piece of felt permanently to one side of each.
I think that cartridge is Pro-Jects version of a Ortofon Concorde MkII CLUB since it has the elliptical stylus and almost the same specifications. They are, in my opinion, comparable to the 2M blue just in a “DJ” configuration.
@@JohnFas it depends on what kind of sound you are looking for. The cartridges themselves will have different frequencies, balance, stereo separation, and imaging. The Concorde and 2M lines are going to sound different but it just depends on your preference. Remember, this is just an opinion.
@@JohnFas another thing I thought about with the Concorde Club is that the output voltage is higher and they seem to sound better through my mixer. But that is most likely due to the increase and maybe a little from the “special” elliptical stylus that comes on those.
We all spend money to our discretion to feed our hobbies, so if Metallica is "your thing" I'm glad you could find this limited edition piece and enjoy it! The total price, not so cheap but paired to a $125.00 cartridge, might be due to royalties to Metallica and the limited number. Would I buy one? No, I am not a Metallica fan and I am too traditionalist for that wildly shaped turntable, but, hey, to each their own. I am a Clapton fan since the early/mid 60's so I had no issues to spend a lot of money on his signature Fender Strat and Martin acoustic, as I said, to each their own.
As a kid, I remember adding anit-skate to my BSR changer by using fishing line, a sinker, a bent paperclip and a disassembled binder clip so I could avoid it skipping ahead when playing my scratched “Fragile” LP.
Fortunately my cheap Technics back then simply had a dial for anti-skate that you'd set at numbers matching the tracking force and you could call it done.

No. You can't put records straight on the glass. You can get clear acrylic mat on it and that will work. It probably is the same size as Rega since Project copies them in almost every way they can
Thanks Randy for this. I didn’t know about it until I noticed it here. For some time I was thinking about buying a turntable but I postponed it until ‘someday’ if ever. When I’ve seen this I instantly thought that it’s time to make the move. It looks different from the rest, it’s not boring even if it’s less user friendly (no cover and dimensions). I understand that it may be called ugly but at the same time it’s beautiful. It’s probably very overpriced but as you said it - it’s a turntable from your favorite band and still a good one. I ordered one but I need to wait until November/December. I have time to buy some vinyls though, Metallica ones included (I already bought St. Anger which back in a day was my first CD album of the band). So thanks to you I’ll begin my journey with vinyls and turntables. With this one of a kind turntable of one of my favorite bands! I have a glass plattered Rega P2, and I also do not like the looks of the felt mat. So I got a clear acrylic matt for like $20 from Hudson Hi Fi (through amazon). Looks great, can still see through it, sound is not affected much to my ears.
I think you should use the mat or a mat, because glass easily picks up a static charge, the charge is hard to remove completely, and i would think at least some if the charge would transfer to the record, and we all know thats how you can get some types of clicks on our beloved albums.
That’s a great looking table, don’t worry about the cartridge as long as the arm is well built and the bearing tolerances are well calibrated it doesn’t matter. I have 2 Rega planar 1&2 tables that came with the Raga Carbon cart which is an Audio technica 3600($11.00) rebranded by Rega and both tables sound great. An another note use the felt mat to protect your records and dampen vibration . Enjoy your “Ride the lightning “ table!!
Metallica is what brought me into this obsession with sound. As I was turning a teenager I discovered them through my “cool” uncle. His kenwood rack system also fueled my equipment obsession. I needed my own. I would take any crap radio any one would give me as a young kid and around the same time I discovered my passion I also got my first stereo equipment. I baby sat for my cousin who was going through a divorce and moving. As payment she gave me her pioneer stereo receiver along with a single disc CD player and a pair of SPL monitor tower speakers. Eventually I saved enough money to buy an Optimus 10 band graphic eq. It was too late for me at that point. I was infected and would never recover. Long story sorry. All this to say thanks for this informative video. I’m happy you were able to buy one of these for yourself. I would love to have one as well. Unfortunately it’s not in the cards atm. I really appreciate you sharing it with us tho as well as your love of Metallica!
The deerhide turntable mat sold on eBay by the guy in LA for $27 might be a nice thing for this platter. It's thin like the felt mat, but with much better grip on the platter and record and presumably better with static.
Looks very cool and is definitely an interest piece for guests or for an office. It doesn't look like it is easy to use or for a beginner in vinyl. It will be interesting to see if you play this, thinking maybe it doesn't sound as good as another one, say Fluance. Sometimes, it's more than the sound. Good luck, nice job, keep up the good work.
OKAY! You are absolutely allowed a bit of self indulgence occasionally. Ignore those who criticise, it does not matter in this case. As for the cartridge, look upon it as a freebie! Just like getting cables with a set of speakers, they are there but you will probably not use them because you will UPGRADE to something better. That is how it is in the world of audio. Most importantly just enjoy what you have...
Hey Randy, nice to see you getting excited by the gear as well as the music. As regards the cartridge, I think what’s going on here is you’re getting a free cartridge to get you going with your $1,600 turntable. At this sort of budget there’s no way I’d want the turntable manufacturer to dictate the tonal balance of the sound by putting a $500 cartridge in the package. The tonearm is decent quality and is adjustable for height, so it will take a wide range of cartridges. Chances are the Fluance headshell will slot straight in as it likely follows the SME standard bayonet fit. Once you get past the novelty stage, my guess is you will be very pleasantly surprised by the performance if you try something like a Goldring G1042 on it.
Those Ortofon OM carts do look awesome, but you don’t start getting really good sound until you plug in the 2Ms, starting with the Blue. Rumor has it, Metallica sounds great on a 2M Blue or Bronze. Just sayin’. You got one of those, what’s your opinion?
It does look cool! The thing about glass platter without the felt, is that it slips a bit with the variable "drag" of the stylus in the groove. And possibly it may cause static charge buildup? If you use a clamp. then that might negate the issue. And cleaning the record might be more important is you don't use the felt? If there oil in the platter bearing? Or "just" air?
Yes. You need a mat. For many reasons (damping of the vinyl, isolation from bearing and motor noise, etc.), but most importantly, you don’t want to grind grit or dust into the B side of your vinyl. No hard (metal, glass, acrylic) platter is perfectly clean. Ever. With a felt, or other soft mat, that doesn’t happen.
If a mat was needed Pro-Ject would have supplied one. Glass and acrylic is easier to clean and maintain than a mat. I use a Pro-Ject turntable with a acrylic platter and don't use a mat. Contact Pro-Ject, I am sure that they know what their platters need.
@@daniannaci3258 felt mats are perfect for storing all the dust and other nasties you don't want near your records and acrylic platters don't use mats.
@@shb8124 Felt mats hold the nasties, like a Swiffer. Acrylic or metal platters transfer the nasties directly to the vinyl. And if you use a clamp - yikes!
Buy yourself a fan brush made for applying makeup from any dollar store to keep it clean. The Black album sounds so good on vinyl. So much snap and punch. Enjoy.
You should buy that Concorde ortophon pickup and set an om 30-40 tip on it if possible ! Next time when we can win - 300.000 - you better let us register every time we want because that with only 1 among maybe 75.000 is nuts and we do not think we have a chance ! Good Weekend !!!
Randy ---- I'm honestly seriously happy for you. What matters is you and your happiness when it comes to your toys. Men don't need to make purchases to be like everyone else, to get great satisfaction from something that every person has. We need to make purchases to be like no one else, that no one else has, to get great satisfaction, knowing we did it for ourselves. Men don't look to others for approval, or for attention. Women do those things. We don't want anyone to have the same things that we have, we want the only one, or a limited number, or something we made ourselves. That's what makes us happy. A man can be alone and die alone and be happy about his life, if he has the toys he wanted and enjoyed having them.
Hey Randy. I enjoyed the video, as usual. I'm curious about the audio pieces just beneath the TT. What are they? Phono pre and dac? Gishelli labs? They are side by side on top of the Emotiva amp. Scrolled through the comments and couldn't find anyone else commenting on those pieces. Thanks if you can answer. Enjoyed your videos for 2 years now.
Not for me Randy. I recently bought a Music Hall classic, took this over my project debut carbon with acrylic platter and 2m blue cart. I added an ATVM750SH to the Classic, and this set up is so good. I like the look of the Classic and the features. It has the feel of a direct drive table with out the possibility of the noise that they can produce. The AT VM750 is such a great cart. Much less money all in then this table.
This is cool. From the look of the thumbnail I thought the sharp M's were the platter which would have been dangerous and awesome. I just got the Kill 'Em All - Jump in the Fire RED Vinyl from Walmart - completing my Walmart color Metallica's up to the Black album. Also...you CAN put Vinyl directly on Acrylic and Glass - I do it. It has never been an issue for me. Cool Video!
congratz! got mine a couple month ago too, awesome TT. There‘s an austrian seller stating that there are only 500 of them, but I‘m not really sure if this number is correct. 🤘
I can pick one of these up locally, less than retail and I soooo want it. But its a case of this or adding the money for a nice new bigger TV lol. My current turntable isn't up to much snuff and since I'm collecting the Metallica Box-sets, this just seem so appropriate. I'm new ish to turntables as I like the relative plug'n play concord stylus. I keep think "you know you can get better for the money", but whatever I buy, it isn't this. Oh and I guess for a Metallica logo, you can look to their "Scary Guy". But they haven't featured it for decades.
great design. I think the cartridge is perfect for the design. Looks like The Concord! That table is more about the design than performance, although i am sure the performance is excellent as well.
You're obviously a huge Metallica fan. And the band was something you enjoyed growing up. I say good for you! A buddy of mine bought one of the first 100 Gibson Ace Freley Guitars made. He is a HUGE Kiss fan. I get it. Get some coffee kick back and enjoy your purchase. Great video.
As soon as I saw the title for this video, I started watching it, and tagged my mate this video in messenger. I have known about the Metallica turntable for a few months now. I’m a Metallica fan myself, but wouldn’t buy the turntable. I’m looking at upgrading mine though. I’m getting the Audio Technica LP-140XP in silver, paired with the Pro-Ject Phono Box S2. Once I get the turntable and the phono preamp, I’ll be upgrading the cartridge to an Audio Technica 540ML RigB. Hopefully with that set up, I’ll be happy for a long time!
@@cheapaudioman I’m hoping so! The 540ML is a MicroLine stylus, and is supposed to be phenomenal for inner groove tracking and detail retrieval. A few of my friends have this cart, and they love it! It comes at a price though, it’s around $450.00 AUD, and with the RigB upgrade, a little more!
Very cool. Maybe Pro-Ject offers a spare/replacement headshell for trying various cartridges. Also, you'd have to measure it (the plinth) but you *might* find a cheap plastic or plexiglass half dome to put over it to keep dust (and children) out of it. Not sure about vinyl on glass, but you'd think Pro-Ject would have info regarding if you needed to adjust the angle of the tonearm to allow for any thickness changes as in adding a mat. Good luck. Looks like an amazing tribute to the band.
I don’t see where this is much different then the t1 except for the shape and the sub platter. I guess u would need to be a super fan to spend that much
I agree with you not wanting to put a black mat on a glass platter. I have a rega turntable with a glass platter and I ended up buying an acrylic mat. You can find many clear acrylic mats and they look great and sound good as well. Great video as always Randy!
I know this is pretty obvious, but this is $400 TT with a $200 custom shaped base. Then, $200 for the seller. Then $800 for Metallica's branding. And, I'm thrilled that they made it and you got one. 🤘🤘
My comments come with absolutely no authority or even street cred, but they cost you nothing. Let me start with the obvious. That turntable looks 🆒. Even I, a non-metal head recognize the aesthetics in that rig. I bought a Pro-ject Elemental in red, partially because of the looks. I can't add pictures but I bought a machined metal spindle weight that might also benefit your vinyl to glass contact. As far as I know, glass platters can accommodate an LP without major issues, other than these considerations. Slippage and vibration transfer. As an example, the Elemental, like a lot of "budget" turntables come with a MDF platter. They also included a felt mat. I truly dislike felt mats. For awhile I used a Led Zeppelin album cover felt mat. I did away with it and bought a silicone / rubber mat. I noticed a lowering of the background. It's difficult to explain because it wasn't a distortion, hum, or feedback, but it helped, "darken" those quiet moments. Next I placed the turntable on cutting board the same size as the overall footprint of the plinth. Underneath that I used an inch of stiff black foam, which I've used in between walls in recording studios. All that made things even quieter. I think that glass platters are beautiful, however they don't have any vibrational dissipation. Put a shot glass up to an outside wall (inside) your home with your ear slightly touching it. You're going to hear all kinds of noise and vibration. That adds ambient noise, however small, to your turntable playback. My recommendations, buy a spindle weight to minimize any slippage, and get a good quality mat, silicone - rubber - as transparent as you can find, and I think you're going to hear a difference. Of course listen to a record with some dynamics to tell, not some loud and louder stuff 🔊 Maybe even an early Beatles White album or Revolver. No, make that Captain & Tenille. Just kidding, don't ban me 😁
Hi Randy. Great presentation of a significant turntable. It’s clear your affection for Metallica was driven by your youth-filled passions for the group, the music, and what the music meant to you. I think you are “review” was very well balanced. When looking at something like this I takeoff my objective glasses and put on my artistic glasses. this is clearly a work of art with all of the emotion and connection that art can generate. When talking about art, value should not be a consideration. Only, does it move you? This turntable clearly moves you, and it was worth every penny. Enjoy!
Hello Randy, THX for the job you are doing. Keep up the good work! I especially liked your earlier uncut videos, really! Some videos with the stopwatch on the phone 🙂 A different question: Including your earlier tests, I ordered a pair of KEF Q150s at "sale price" back in the day. I use them on my desk with an old AMP connected to the PC. I would like to replace the AMP with a small DAC/AMP combo with USB connection. Which would you prefer in terms of driving KEFs and sound signature? The most likely ones are the following, which you have all tested. Cheaper ones: - Aiyima T9 - SMSL SA300 Slightly more expensive: - Loxjie A30 - Topping MX5 Thank you very much!
My father was a disk jockey back in the late 70s early 8os. Not a radio station disk jockey but he played dances, weddings, ceremonies, etc. You get the idea. Anyways he passed away 8 years ago and I inherited his sound equipment. I inherited two Technics sl1200 turntables he had as well as several peavey speakers ,amps etc....They both work and sound wonderful. I also inherited his LP collection of over 200 albums and over 400 45s. I totally understand paying what you did for this Metallica turntable as it's a collectible but I honestly don't get why people pay so much for new turntables today. I remember back in the day when they were prevalent they were really cheap money wise. People act like they are made of gold now. Lol. Oh and I am one of those people who believes records sound better than digital. You can't change my mind. Lol. But yeah , this is a really cool turntable! I wouldn't care what others think.
One of my best buddies thinks exactly as you do. Easily similar. I tend to agree. $500 buys on a heck of a turntable these days. As to your father's equipment... wow. What a great way to have his memory live on every time you drop the needle. Very cool indeed.
I love you being absolutely giddy over a product. 😀 I might be crazy, but the turntable looks like it's made up of the "M" and maybe the "A" from the Metallica logo.
Im not a die hard metallica fan. But id defently get that turntable given the chance. Imagin if you could change the color and brightness of the glow. Keep us posted if you are able to find some upgrades that fit and pair well with it.

They got ya! Lol. I can’t do non dust cover tables. That’s just me and my OCD. I hope you enjoy, Randy!
Those Ortofon OM carts do look awesome, but you don’t start getting really good sound until you plug in the 2Ms, starting with the Blue. Rumor has it, Metallica sounds great on a 2M Blue or Bronze. Just sayin’. You got one of those, what’s your opinion?
I wish to say how much your channel is appreciated.
👍🏻😎Maiden and Metallica are definitely my favorite Metal bands and I'm going on 60.
So cool, would have been awesome if it came with all the Metallica Records at that price.
It should have...
I'm glad you got it, and think it looks cool which is the number 1 factor for getting this turntable. Bonus it sounds good too.
That wasn’t Jason Newsteds last record. He was on Load, Reload, Garage Inc., and S&M.
I was wondering how long it would take you to review this turntable 😉
It does look cool! The thing about glass platter without the felt, is that it slips a bit with the variable "drag" of the stylus in the groove. And possibly it may cause static charge buildup? If you use a clamp. then that might negate the issue. And cleaning the record might be more important is you don't use the felt?
If there oil in the platter bearing? Or "just" air?
Don't use a mat, you don't need it. Unique turntable. Thanks for the review.
@@daniannaci3258 it's easier to dust the acrylic... yeah, I'm going with that 😄
I play my vinyl straight on the acrylic platter. Never had a concern
I'm very happy for You Randy!!! Enjoy! 👍
Buy yourself a fan brush made for applying makeup from any dollar store to keep it clean. The Black album sounds so good on vinyl. So much snap and punch. Enjoy.
Thanks for your honest “review.” Most audiophiles would not give this turntable a chance, but you don’t give f**k bout them. Rock on!
You should buy that Concorde ortophon pickup and set an om 30-40 tip on it if possible ! Next time when we can win - 300.000 - you better let us register every time we want because that with only 1 among maybe 75.000 is nuts and we do not think we have a chance ! Good Weekend !!!
How many of these did you get?
One. And Nothing Else Matters!
I'm happy for you. Your excitement is infectious!
Epic! Can’t afford it but if I could..I’d totally have one! 🤟🏻🤟🏻
You could add an acrylic mat but with the glass you don't need it.
Cool Video!
Finally!! I really imagined you playing the remastered version of the Black album on this!! 🤘🤘🤘
congratz! got mine a couple month ago too, awesome TT. There‘s an austrian seller stating that there are only 500 of them, but I‘m not really sure if this number is correct. 🤘
I have Fluance TT 2 tables and very happy here
Glad you like your turntable and I like your music you play in between sections of your video
Thanks Randy. I was looking to buy my first turntable. Might as well be Metallica
great design. I think the cartridge is perfect for the design. Looks like The Concord! That table is more about the design than performance, although i am sure the performance is excellent as well.
Reload was Jason's last studio album with Metallica.
That Fender turntable is a beauty.
Hopefully with that set up, I’ll be happy for a long time!
sounds like it will be awesome.
No dust cover and a felt mat is not a great combo. I have also wondered about putting records directly on glass.
Screw the haters, this hobby is supposed to be fun. I probably won't buy one but I'm glad I live in a world where it exists.
I don’t see where this is much different then the t1 except for the shape and the sub platter. I guess u would need to be a super fan to spend that much
I have been a fan of the band since 1983. 🤘
Black album was NOT Newstead's last album! He was on Load and Re-Load!
I used cork on a glass platter previously.
I agree with you not wanting to put a black mat on a glass platter. I have a rega turntable with a glass platter and I ended up buying an acrylic mat. You can find many clear acrylic mats and they look great and sound good as well. Great video as always Randy!
hi. you cant just put the vinyl on the glass? Thanx
Hey be glad it didn't come with a AT 3600L LOL For DJ type carts 125 is the middle ground, you could put on a Ortofon Concorde MKII Elite.
Of course listen to a record with some dynamics to tell, not some loud and louder stuff 🔊
Maybe even an early Beatles White album or Revolver. No, make that Captain & Tenille. Just kidding, don't ban me 😁
Whoa, you have got to hand it to Project, that turntable is sufficiently outrageous to work as a Metallica high quality instrument. Quite a statement.
Enjoy!
You can put vinyl on acrylic but will need a record clamp on the spindle. Project makes cheap clamps.
Round belt is for 78rpm.
Hello Randy,
THX for the job you are doing. Keep up the good work!
I especially liked your earlier uncut videos, really! Some videos with the stopwatch on the phone 🙂
A different question:
Including your earlier tests, I ordered a pair of KEF Q150s at "sale price" back in the day. I use them on my desk with an old AMP connected to the PC. I would like to replace the AMP with a small DAC/AMP combo with USB connection. Which would you prefer in terms of driving KEFs and sound signature?
The most likely ones are the following, which you have all tested.
Cheaper ones:
- Aiyima T9
- SMSL SA300
Slightly more expensive:
- Loxjie A30
- Topping MX5
Thank you very much!
Hi, let us know what road did you take and what you found out on this search, please. Good look with your proyect!
Could you install an ortofon Concorde on that turntable ? Those pickups can handle the normal HiFi pickups I think and not just diskdjocky pickups !
Love how pumped you are!! Congrats!!
I'm betting the reason why they went with that cartridge over a 2M Blue etc. is because it makes the tonearm & Cartridge together look like a snake.
I am extremely happy for you Randy and I'd like to have one too man enjoy that turntable and like you said keep it forever Rock on
the round dbelt is for 78 rpm records
So I,have a Donner DP-500 what’s the verdict on this turntable…..
I love you being absolutely giddy over a product. 😀 I might be crazy, but the turntable looks like it's made up of the "M" and maybe the "A" from the Metallica logo.
Sweet! Now get a 2M bronze or Nagaoka MP200 on that and keep on spinning.
Toss the Felt. Glass or Vinyl to vinyl is fine
cool
Looks like an Ortofon Concorde may fit? If so, the MK2 Elite (with the gold tip) wd look sweet
Im not a die hard metallica fan. But id defently get that turntable given the chance. Imagin if you could change the color and brightness of the glow. Keep us posted if you are able to find some upgrades that fit and pair well with it.
