    One thing I learnd from pitching: If I start with the story right away, I get entangled in details. If i start with one statement about the vision or premise (eg.: "I wanted to tell a story of a different kind of winner. A winner who actually loses everything.") producers are instantly more attentive and I tend to talk much clearer about the rest of the story.

    I hired Jen as a script consultant once, and she did indeed ask me to pitch to her. Sadly, I was caught off-guard, and I crashed and burned. But she was right, it is a good practice to get in.

    If you’re nervous in front of people, you can use these silent techniques: Tighten your abdominal muscles isometrically; your buttocks and/or do Kegel exercises. This will help your solar plexus to open up and help to relax your vocal cord area. Silently, slowly, take a deep breath. This is a singer’s technique which works also for speakers who feel nervous. It gives you inner strength to simultaneously focus on physical steps to harness mental thoughts. Slowly fill your lungs with air, holding your chest cage out, slowly exhale and then speak. You can interchange these exercises.

      Wishing the best of luck Jorge! At some point we hope to edit together a video on pitch meetings but it probably won't be until long after you begin pitching : )

      Always #grateful for all that you do. Great idea the video you guys are working on. pitching is an art form in itself that every writer needs to master, but since we writers for the most part are introverts, pitching becomes a challenge.

    I guess the question that I have would be concerns around the IP of the story being pitched i.e. copyright. It is all well and good having the opportunity in pitching a story/idea and in the event it is accepted and progress further that's great. However what happens if you pitch and it does not get accepted so you move on to someone else in the meantime the person you had originally pitched to has stolen your idea and before you know it someone else is making huge cash based on something that you had created.

    I am a writer in Atlanta and also have written several features that have been completed and premiered. Although every time I call a network to get a pitch meeting they usually tell me to have my literary agent contact them? Is there any way around this?

    • @JonasPolsky
      @JonasPolsky 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, there's no way around it. The representation acts as a vetting process to prevent networks and studios from being bombarded with thousands of calls and meetings.

    • @HENRYSBASEBALL
      @HENRYSBASEBALL 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      NO, IT IS AVOID LEGAL ISSUES WITH YOUR IDEA. YOU MUST HAVE REPRESENTATION.

    • @jjkhawaiian
      @jjkhawaiian 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HENRYSBASEBALL It's actually both, though legalities are of major importance. Jonas is right where it's a vetting process. It's unsolicited submission or contact without representation unless they specifically state they accept unsolicited material. Most do not accept it.
      For legalities: Who wrote it and are they all on board with meeting with whomever? Is there an IP behind it? Is there a copyright?

    Let's say you pitch for a network, and they steal your idea... Is this a legitimate concern/risk?

    • @BrianMeetsWorld
      @BrianMeetsWorld 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Get your idea copyrighted and patten first register it with the writers guild and you’ll be fine

    • @Sweet_Karma
      @Sweet_Karma 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What Sparrow said but let's say you don't have time or the money to do that then you should always email it to them after your pitch is confirmed... That is your proof of concept, now it's a fact you sent this to them first and your name is clearly seen in the treatment, one-pager, outline or script/screenplay

    • @donnellmason9244
      @donnellmason9244 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Writers guild does nothing. You need to copyright it with the U.S. of congress.

      My man, what you seem to be looking for is a formula to follow step by step in order to get such result. Unfortunately, that is not how life works.
