TBR, S&S, Jackpot exhaust shootout - Lowrider S w/ S&S 475 cam

  • What a crazy (and expensive) summer it’s been searching for the perfect exhaust for my 2020 Harley Davidson Lowrider S with S&S 475 cam. I started with a TBR Comp S because they sounded great on stage I bikes. A high lift/duration cam produces a much louder and very different note due to the increased exhaust gas combustion, but even more so performs very differently in the area of torque and horsepower. Those two factors left me feeling very unsatisfied with the TBR pipe. Learning that Harley M8 run better with a longer pipe, I went for the S&S Superstreet non-cat pipe and it did produce a more linear power curve. However that curve performed best where are the TBR performed the least. After many more hours of research and calls to fuel Moto I rolled the dice on the jackpot riot pipe.
    I hope you enjoy my recap of this journey as I take a late night ride through our beautiful city of Anchorage, Alaska.

    Hi Rob, about 2 weeks ago I had my 2018 RK 107 dyno tuned after installing the Red shift 468 torque cam with S&S Sidewinder 2-1 no cat system and Dynojet tuner. The torque profile produced was very similar to the profile of your TBR pipe. I had torque peaks at about 2650 and 4500 rpm. Needless to say I was disappointed. My dyno guy worked and worked but couldn't tune that characteristic out. He told me it was my pipe. I do enjoy a well detailed report such as you have delivered here and I just wanted to say thanks.

      Well thank you for taking the time to reply back. That’s the biggest reason that I wanted to put this together, plus it was pretty fun. Let me know how it turns out for you down the road. I also put a jackpot RTX on my CVO street glide with a 131 and I am editing footage from that one right now. An absolutely amazing increase in power on that bike too.

    I’m also in Anchorage getting ready to order the 3rd exhaust for my 19’ Breakout Special.

    Excellent video Rob! It is interesting how different exhaust play with the same cam. I called S&S and spoke with them before I ordered my exhaust. They recommended the Cat version because in their testing...it made more TQ and HP throughout the range except except for a couple ponies at the top! I run the Wood 22XE cam and with the cat version....I am producing roughly 127 / 128 corrected HP/TQ. With the cat and db reducer IN like I'm running....it is deep and throaty and plenty loud for me. It seems like I am in a minority though....most guys here in FL have super loud, ear splitting exhaust. Thanks for an excellent video brother....bike sounds bad ass.....Gene :)

      Climate is a very interesting factor, albeit I am running the target tune wide bands. Engines up here in general just like to breathe. A little back pressure is important for M8 engines but the cats definitely choke them out up here. As of today we now have snow on the ground and it looks like it’s going to stick this time so thinking about Florida has me super jealous! Ride hard, have fun brother!

    One of the most interesting videos on different M8 exhausts. I have a ''23 LRS 117 with TBR Turnout and SE tune. All was done by dealer before I bought it and retained warranty. All in all it pulls strong down low, then a slight dip, then it pulls really well to the top.Later when i get an S&S 475, might go with your system. People say the M8 doesn't sound like a Shovelhead. Well, with your setup, it sounds magnificent, especially at idle. Thanks for the info. P.S.I was wondering why there was some light left at 11:30. Alaska!

    • @robb907
      @robb907  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you running a PowerVision‘s for a tuner by chance? I’ve also discovered that power visions will create a dip and the autotune process. If you buy the PowerVision‘s from fuel Moto then they’ll tweak your map for you and send it back. I eventually built a 128 11.5:1 and .520 lift Wood WM8 408 cam on that bike and had that darn dip again. I sent it to Fuel Moto made some tweaks we tuned it again and it turned out great 2 dyno tuning sessions is kind on spendy but worth it. Our local dyno technician uses the handheld with the auto tune and hits all the spots to get the data populated. I have seen other people have issues with these dips using thunder max as well.
      We were not able to tune the dip out on the SNS 475 cam stage 2 set up. Just changing the exhaust was all that was needed. Goes to show that it could be a number of things causing it.

    Good info, I got a 2020 Low Rider. I saw the same dip with a TBR and went with a RB Racing 2-1. The dip went away and it pulls good throughout the rpm range. I plan on a big bore kit and 475 cam and this pipe should perform pretty well. I had not seen the FM Jackpot 2-1 until this video.

    • @robb907
      @robb907  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Howdy! Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Your question on the Superstreet, compared to the other two, yes. Maybe it could be tuned a bit but that’s a lot of ground to make up to catch up with the other two pipes I used. I’ve found others that have the TBR and other short pipes have the same experience- good power up top, but a flat spot down low. The S&S is a long pipe so maybe that’s the key for a linear power band, but something about it’s design makes lower hp and torque all the way across, maybe the super long narrow passage muffler. The Jackpot is long like the S&S but it’s headers and muffler are more like the TBR but a LOT more heavy duty. The shorter more open muffler maybe? My buddy has a TBR on his 131 and blew out the baffle and end cap. They sound nice but just don’t stand up to the higher power engine builds. I heard that the D&D and RB Racing produced similar numbers as my Jackpot also. That leads me to believe that with a high lift/duration cam, the key is long pipe, short muffler. You are definitely going to love that cam! I hope this helps, cheers from Alaska!

      @@gambietti yup I know it. The S&S has been out a while and the other 2 are relatively new by comparison. My theory is that the S&S rear cylinder pipe bend is too tight where it curves around the timing cover plus the muffler being as long as it is. But I’m not an expert.
