This is Anime is Punk Rock Cartoons Vol. 2. We highly recommend watching the first episode in the series before getting into this one, they build off each other. These videos are dedicated to getting into what we do, how we do it, and why. Please watch through the entire video since it's really an important one on what's coming up for this coming year. Last year we changed the channel up, focused on longer, more in depth videos, and got a lot of support out the gate for that. Well, we did it and we're really happy with the videos we put out, many are the best content we've ever made. But it's a new year, and now it's time to expand the channel, bring you more content, better content, and more often, but we need your help.
About Bonsai Pop:
The brainchild of Mike, and Tyler. Bonsai Pop is our anime passion project, and it's 100% anime, 100% of the time! We make videos for ourselves and our patrons with the overarching goal to be completely financially independent of TH-cam so we can make what we want and what you want!

Thanks to YT being a bit broken this dropped 10 hours early in the middle of the night 🤦♂️ HOWEVER, we’re already seeing a big push for support, I haven’t made it through the comments yet, but thank you guys.
A few things*
in order to hire editors we’re looking at needing about $6000 in support and keeping that there. Sounds crazy, but if each person who has seen this already (12pm Jan 8th) pledged a dollar we’d already be way over that.
Second, I tooled on Ariana Grande, cause she’s relevant now that she’s Asian 🤨
I know I ripped on gigguk, honestly videos like he made disgust me, we barely raised that much money for charity this summer from all of you, $10k is 1/5 of what he makes on patreon from TRASH TASTE. That being said I generally like his content, I just think “I spent so much money on *blank*” videos are insulting to people who support him and the timing is real fucked up.
Third, I don’t think or pretend that I know everything, there are plenty of people out there who have intelligently and politely disagreed with me and I’ve not only appreciated it but legitimately given their perspective thought and time. Everything is based off of perspective, and perspective is subjective therefore everything is subjective and I deeply understand that.
Lastly, I state that I’m not an sjw but I do have a firm feeling of justice. That being said it’s perspective based and I generally lean towards a more liberal attitude because of my own experiences. You can be an ally of justice without being a psycho about it. Maybe that was harsh, idk, I just woke up.
Lastly there was a word mash up at 14:58 where I was trying to say that we put out two *hour* long to two multi *hour* long podcasts a week. That was just poorly said lol.

The same people who say that anime isn't political are usually the same people that willingly ignore the fact that the first tv anime, Astro Boy, is a story that was conceived in the aftermath of World War II, and is overtly about conscientious usage of powerful technology, and how doing so is the only way to not to destroy each other physically, politically, and emotionally. Love your videos dude, Bonsai Pop is an inspiration, and the work being done here is wonderful.
I really look forward to what this channel has to say about the ending of AoT. I think they will be in the "It tells it like it is"-camp.

That argument swings both ways though. No one's willing to say "it's not for me I get it." Then that's it.

I used to wear headphones to work (I had to stop, too much heat, nearly got caught a bunch of times) and last year, with the nearly hour long videos, I got to kill time at my least favourite place listening to people talk about the things I love.

What you do on this channel is exactly what I want an anime channel to do with the added bonus of having attitudes and oppinions which I respect and relate to...
I come here to be surprised and to learn something about the historical and cultural context of a film or a show I've seen and love or one that I would like to see and that's precisely what you've delivered so far...
The fact that you share your oppinions in the process doesn't diminish the quality of the analysis itself whether someone agrees with them or not...
The fact that you pick the topics and pieces of media to talk about based on the value they hold to you and the impact they've made on the industry and fandom as a whole to me is much more precious than the struggle for relevance demonstrated by channels that only discuss the newest shit...
People disagreeing with eachother's politics or artistic choices and going their separate ways is not a problem-it's simply one of the 2 options they have...
It probably is the best and most natural thing to do...

Anime isn't underground at all. Put down the pipe. Demon Slayer was the fourth highest grossing movie worldwide of 2020, highest grossing in Japan. Naruto, Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z...don't get me started on the worldwide popularity and how much money anime merchandise brings in. You could argue manga is underground but anime? You're high. Just bring up how much Crunchyroll is worth and how much Sony has invested into anime.

It beats it being underground back when Vampire Hunter D, Akira and Wicked City were the go too's. I had to drop my Patreon subscriptions this month, and this was the hardest one to drop. Anime culture has too few voices of authentic critical analysis out there, and I have a lot of respect for what these guys are doing. Keep up the good work, Bonsai Pop.
Been subscribed since basically the beginning, and I can say wholeheartedly say that the in depth dives you guys do into everything and mixing that with real social commentary, applications, and the repercussions thereof are exactly why I love this channel so much.
Anime is art, and art is a reflection of someone's soul, you can't take the beliefs of that person out of their art, otherwise it's just a commodity.

You guys are either my favorite anime channel, or in a close second place. You put so much time and effort and care into each video you make, so I can’t help but eat that shit up. I used to be subbed to so many "anitubers", but as I've gotten older and life got busier, I've had to scale down on my TH-cam time, which in turn meant scaling down my anituber subscriptions too.
That said, I'm still subbed to Bonsai Pop, and I still watch every video, PRECISELY because I don't want clickbait TH-camr vlog-esque drivel.

ive always liked the channel and to be honest it is the diversity of the content that keeps me hooked. some anime ive either heard of or watched while others just flew under the radar and with all those categories i am always interested in what others think or gathered from it. like kenshin i didn't watch until last year and i absolutely loved it and others like monoke i have been trying to track down as it really interested me. even the formatting like with the samurai champloo episode was fantastic and creative while blood C had me so confused at first as i never heard of it but damn do i want to watch it now. so if anything i should be thanking you as despite being 24 and in college i look forward to the next topic you guys bring up every other week as someone who can barely feed themselves with college and other responsibilities i feel bad that i just don't have the money to support more other than recommending the channel to friends and watching regularly.

I don’t care about your politics, you’ll always be my favorite anime TH-camr, what really made me liked you was that you did videos on old classics, but at the same time it ruined my ability to socialize I’ll find someone my age who likes anime (Highschool age) and I’ll say “oh do you like Fist Of The Northstar or Beck Mongolian Chop Sqaud?” “What’s that? I watch Demon Slayer” but other than that I don’t care how political you get I’ll keep on watching, even though we have very different beliefs (btw you should check out Beck, it’s about these kids starting a band so I think you would love it, tell me if you’ve seen it or not)

The videos are top-notch and I always enjoy the commentary because you always stick to your guns no matter what people have to say about it. That kind of integrity is pretty rare in such a cutthroat medium and I love to see it.
I still won’t ever forget that night where I took a chance and stumbled on a random ass Saint Seiya video in 2019. The quality of that video made me watch the other videos you guys had at the time. Shit literally changed my life for the better during a time where I was started to dig myself out of a dark place.
This channel and the patreon have been something special to me. Hell, the patreon itself is in a whole league of its own, it’s nuts.

I get a little sad, in the "can't we all just get along" kind of way, about the tone/implication that goes with calling out the more traditional AniTubers. I think they all have something they contribute and have had varying experience and eras in the space. I think some of those "establishment" TH-camrs, like the example you gave (who I do subscribe to and watch), came up in an era and model of TH-cam that required the use of periodic, clickbait "events" -- plus that's how they may choose to combat burnout and change things up. (I will say that I've never been a fan of "watch me spend $xx" videos, though, and didn't watch that one.) Though, even apart from the specific video you pointed out, I think you've kinda dunked on (okay, maybe just poked at) the "old guard" AniTubers in other videos.
I think, like you said about Ariana Grande, sometimes it's a choice to appeal to the more "commercial" tastes and audience. And I think that's fine and has its place and own appeal. It basically acts as a gateway or bridge between the more mainstream content and the niche.
I do agree, though, that you guys aren't an entry-level, wide-net kind of channel. I feel like you guys definitely dive under the surface, to bring up older or underdiscussed media, or to give in-depth analysis, that those channels can't/don't cover due to their model. And I think that the ecosystem benefits from both: the flashy stuff to get you in the door and introduce you to the world and your first taste of community, but also the darker, more serious and involved areas to really sink into as you get further in.
While I definitely love punk rock, I think there's also room to appreciate pop and even ways pop can be used to get into deeper genres.
(Part of me has always hoped for collabs with you guys and some of those establishment channels one day, but I guess the philosophies might be too divergent.)
I'm still here for you guys and your ethic (and ethics), though, and still want to see you guys keep doing what you want and how you want.
Last punk rock cartoon video i wrote about how i wasnt punk enough to die. Something you said that really resonated with me. This past year. 2021, my best friend, who ive been friends with since we were babies, died. Him and i grew up on anime. Grew up with the sailor moons, dbz, pokemons bc its all we had for so so long. And together we saw anime go from one channel you could only get with satellite tv, to adult swim having two hour blocks of just the best shit. We introduced each other to everything when it comes to anime. And hes gone now. When i watch your videos, i feel less alone. Thank you for existing, keep the grind going, and dont go anywhere.
