- An angry mob in Mexico poured water on a clueless female tourist, hurled insults at her and demanded that she be locked up after she ascended the ancient Mayan pyramid and was filmed dancing on the stairs.
The unidentified woman, who is said to be a Spanish national, sparked an outrage Monday when she ignored the rules barring visitors from climbing Mayan Temple of Kukulcán in Chichén Itzá, which was named in 2007 one of the New 7 Wonders of the World by UNESCO.

Everyone except her refrained from climbing it but she thought she was special. (They weren't "bashing" her, they were booing her selfish behaviour. Looks like some water was thrown which is OTT.)

My daughter & I were fortunate to be able to climb El Castillo in Chichen-Itza, Mexico in 1992. The steps were very steep, and only one rope which laid on the steps for safety. It was worth it to gaze across the whole of the Mayan metropolis. It was just breath taking and will be forever forged in our memories!! 🙂

@@Kane-ez not lies. You used to be able to climb the pyramid. But they stopped allowing it because of wear. It was a similar situation with the great pyramids of Giza in Egypt. For 1,000s of years the pyramids were tourist traps, even back then, and people would climb them, but after a 1,000+ plus years of people climbing them it created wear and tear, and in modern times they decided it was not worth it to keep degrading the pyramid even more just to let people climb.

The erosion by water is far more destructive than a few people walking up the steps. Walking does cause damage but only / mostly with high traffic. Looks at how bad your front steps looks from the mailman walking them to deliver packages.

The statue of liberty isnt really comparable to ancient sites. They designed the statue to be climbed by tourists.
More similar would be something like Stonehenge or the Easter Island heads.

I visited those Mayan ruins back in 2003. Back then, tourists were allowed to climb up it, go inside, and also go inside down stairs and see the golden jaguar with those beautiful jade eyes.
