This video covers the route that is considered the fastest, not the prettiest. You may be surprised at what you see in this mysterious country of Brazil!
Epic Road Trip: Driving from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with full commentary
BR116 (Dutra) is the main highway between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. it is a divided 4 lane road (2N,2S), and the main truck route between the two cities. Some of the restaurants have great food. If you see large number of trucks, stop.

This has been incredibly useful for me. Thank you. I am about to take my first trip to Brazil with my new husband, who is from Pindamohangaba. It's crazy that there is no train between Brazil's two largest cities. We plan to rent a car at Sao Paulo and drive to Pinda but we are planning to go to Rio too. My husband has warned me against driving to Rio and I've read lots of negative stories about people getting robbed and shot at around the favelas and horrible traffic. He says we should take a bus but the bus takes something like 8 hours. I'm an Aussie who is used to lots of empty space and good traffic regulations and enforcement and driving on the left. The idea of this drive scares the crap out of me but you have put my mind at ease somewhat. Especially with a GPS.

I’m Canadian and this drive is fairly routine for me. I generally avoid entering either city at night because 1 wrong turn can set you back 30 minutes. Have never experienced ‘bad guys’ on the road, just really bad, bad, terrible truck drivers that will run you over a cliff without a thought. Gotta check your driving ego at the airport:) - just leave early. It’s winter now so sun is going down earlier at night. Thanks for commenting 🇨🇦👍

There is train but just for cargo.
Do a little research about the Rio-Sao Paulo ponte aérea. It was the first of its kind in the world and until today it’s one of the busiest air routes in the world. So the train wasn’t even thought about.

The place you noticed deforestation is deforested from their native flora since the 1700/1800. This land were basically used for coffee crops. Now, the forest that was being cut is a rotation culture of wood mainly for cellulose.

Linha Vermelho is s hit show, but going the Paraty way will add a lot of time. If you're going to the ocean side of Rio, try Linha Amarelha which will take you into Barra da Tijuca, instead of the run-down areas.

You were lucky she didn't see you. Holding your phone while driving (only this) and filming the police would get you a R$293,47 fine and a bit of trouble (art. 252 CTB).
