He just means like he respected the virtue of why the priest acted on sparing him instead of killing him quick the priest wanted bill to suffer and live life as an outcast he respected priest vallion more than anything because he was willing to fight to the death for what he believed in he was a man that stood for dignity and morals killing a person who symbolizes something important is internalized more so then killing a bunch of people who lived meaningless existences

At 2:50 you can hear DDL’s breathing wavering as he’s reminiscing about such an emotional moment. It’s like he was actually replaying the memory in his head. The ability of Lewis to portray these subtleties is a testament to how he is clearly one of the greatest actors of our time.

I think Bill knows who Leo is at this point, and he's telling him
"I respected your old man more than anyone, so if you come for me you best have the same respect I had for him. Don't stab me in the back, face me and let me die fighting"
It's also why he doesn't kill Leo when he does try to sneak attack him. Bill knows Leo is probably his last chance to die a noble death in battle, but only if he rises up the same way Bill did back in the day. He's trying to recreate his own story in Leo so he can die like his hero, Priest Valen.

Nicholas is correct, this ties well with Daniels character being wrapped in the American flag in this scene. I think there is symbolism at play here

"I cut out the eye that looked away", may be one of the hardest lines spoken on film. The personification of being human and weak, but reconciling this frailty with principals that are executed even when you are beholden to no one but yourself. This scene set the stage for the fight to come. In it, you are able to calmly piece together the depths that Bill would go to be victorious in battle, while at the same time feel the contempt and hatred Amsterdam has for Bill that he has had to subdue. I believe you even get insight into a contempt that Amsterdam is feeling for himself as well for not having already ceased opportunities he had to kill the Butcher.
He taught himself not to blink while tapping the lens in his eye with the knife! Crazy

This is one of the finest scenes in cinematic history. Delivered by the finest actor of our time, Daniel Day-Lewis. The nuance that he brings to this scene makes it so real. The subtle change in his breathing when he recalls the battle, almost facing his certain death, and how he speaks so highly of his greatest adversary.

There's just something so endearing about a villain who can openly express so much admiration & respect towards a hero who fought them...
There are so many stories where the bad guy acts with contempt towards anyone who ever opposes them. So it was refreshing to finally see someone like The Butcher who seems to mourn the passing of his greatest enemy. Appearing to be eternally grateful for the life lessons & experiences that were brought about by their conflict.
Most writers lack the imagination and the balls to write their antagonists this way. They mostly seem to want to preach their personal views on social issues and talk down to their audience. They lack the social lens and maturity to give their villains any genuine aspects of humanity.
I only realized now that the line where he aggressively questions Leo to answer properly with words, is because he wants him to have enough respect for Priests name to answer properly whether hes seen his portrait downstairs.
So, they lack balls right?
Recently I was trying to think of a movie villians who isn't raging at his enemies even as he's defeated but butcher definitely is more dimensional than that. Rutger in blade runner also breaks the mold at the end
its quite easy to write antagonists in such a way when you consider the fact theyre not fighting out of morality
Everyone talks about how great the dialogue is in this scene, and rightfully so. BUT NO ONE ever talks about the absolute visual painting the way DDL is framed. It’s a work of art! The color composition is incredible. It’s fucking beautiful. I think it’s my favorite visually of any movie. The color!!!
An intensely private person, Daniel Day-Lewis remains untouched by the glamour and publicity that goes around and stays focused to deliver one unbelievable performance after another, internalizing the emotions that his characters undergo and immortalizing the characters in return, he is known for staying in his characters completely for the duration of the shooting of his films, getting into the skin of the roles even to the point of emotional and physical breakdown.
Kudos to the master, and the madness.

I always thought this was Bills way of telling Amsterdam he knew who he was, in fact I believe it was a challenge, he was explaining that even though he may lose it would be better to come out and fight with honor than to try and kill him like a "sneak thief, unworthy of a noble name". Now I know I know Johnny told Bill who he was but still Bills reaction to that news was more anger that Johnny would betray a friend instead of the idea Amsterdam would want to kill him.

First time watching this, I found myself captivated by Daniel Day Lewis’s acting without realizing it. I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve felt that way from acting. He’s definitely one of the greatest of all time.

Yea but if it was a mini series the bulk of it wouldn't have been so aesthetically pleasing, well directed, acted, etc. Movies are short, but editors gut all the nonsense which is why minute for minute, they are much better. Though a good show (Sopranos etc.) offer 60+ hours of passable to above average movie quality.
It would be something to see a director the caliber of Scorcese and his team, and actors like Leo and DDL sign up for an extended production of something like this though - I wish that was what paid streaming services offered, instead of office reruns.

1:28 Something to consider when Bill says “I killed the last honorable man…” This means he’s admitting that he himself isn’t honorable. Remember: Bill threw a henchman at Priest Vallon, and then shanked him while the priest was distracted. Bill also says how his earlier fight was “the finest beating I ever took.” He lost to Vallon in a fair and square fight, and only won the later fight through cheap shots. He didn’t win honorably. So he’s admitting here that by killing Priest Vallon, the world was left with only dishonorable men, himself included. That’s what I always think when I hear this line.

Certain parts in certain movies you can tell it was the part the actor was born to play. For instance, Jack Black in Nacho Libre. In this case, IMHO I believe Daniel Day Lewis was born to play William Cutting. Just magnificent.

I get the impression that this is the movie that changed Leonardo's approach to acting forever.
It's almost unreal how Lewis jumps from a spectrum of emotions in a four minute scene and makes it real. This is all fake, it's not real but still my brain is registering it as plausible and convincing. That's what makes acting amazing.

Every single time I see this scene I'm completely enthralled...Daniel Day Lewis is the greatest actor I've ever watched and I think this scene is one of his best...he is a master of his craft.

I watched this in the Cinema and this Monologue gave me chills, Day-Lewis is a phenomenal actor and I was captivated by his performance as Bill the Butcher

The respect bill showed for a well enemy is amazing. He recognized in the son that was contained within the father. While he didn’t know it at the time, he could see the tree. He just couldn’t see the forest

When I saw this movie, I was absolutely dumbfounded and awestruck on Daniel Day Lewi's acting. I had never seen such good acting before. Whenever he was on screen, he stole the god damn spotlight, and deservedly so.
Di Caprio was supposed to be the main character but every time he shared a screen with Daniel, there wasn't even a competition. Imagine how good you must be when you upstage Di Caprio.

I remember when I was in high school we had to do a report on would you rather be loved or feared. Gosh I wish this movie came out back then. His explanation of fear and how it preserves the order of things makes sense. I would have quoted every line from his speech. Much RESPECT Daniel Day Lewis!!!!
Love fades. Fear however, never fades if constantly exerted. You can get further on fear than love. Love won't make people do just anything for you, and people even hurt the ones they love all the time. People however don't tend to hurt the ones they fear. Of course from a moral perspective, love is better than fear.

These scenes with Daniel Day Lewis just keep aging ever better. And he makes all the other talent look sensational, too. One of the most powerful performances any of us have ever seen.
Legendary acting and faultless scripting.....it's a pleasure to watch this over and over again.
I didn't understand this movie the first time I watched it. But I've rewatched it several times since, and I get it. These are some of the greatest characters and greatest stories based on real events I've ever seen.
DDL is one of the most gifted actors we've ever been blessed with. LDC and CD are fantastic, don't get me wrong, but no one immerses themself into roles as much as Daniel. The fact that he often goes into character during principal photography shoots for a film he stars in and doesnt leave character, including costumes, until his scenes are done - that's dedication and love for the art of acting.
Happy 20th anniversary, Gangs of New York, my #2 favorite film!

Hands down one of the, if the not THE best dialogues in all of cinema. I love how even though himself as well as the priest were enemies, he still respected him. I've got my ass beat in a few fights, and there was something honorable that I felt with the foes that helped me up after taking a beating and buying me a beer afterwards. This is the kind of respect that people no longer have these days
