    If you’re going to charge it again with the ‘granny charger’ then make sure you either don’t use an extension lead, or it’s at least large enough and FULLY unwound.

    To all those saying never charge an EV on an extension cord, you're generally right, however it is possible if you observe a few precautions. We charged our BMW i3s on a 10m extension for over two years without any issues at all, but we found that:
    Shop-bought extension reels are no good, as the cable is too light and so would get too hot (even when fully rolled out). The manufacturers know this, and sensibly fit the reel with a thermal cutout, but 10A continuous is enough to trip the cutout after about 15 minutes. (The BMW granny charger is only 10A, not the full 13A possible, as BMW know that 13A continuous would overheat most domestic hardware)
    The 13A rating of domestic hardware assumes short term usage, like a hairdryer or vacuum cleaner for 10 or 15 minutes (that's why ovens have a specific, higher-rated circuit - 2-3 hours of high-temp oven usage would overheat a 13A circuit).
    To charge our EV, I bought 10M of heavy-duty cable (thick rubber insulation, rated to 750v & 20A) and a good quality plug and single fly socket. I made them up carefully, ensuring the connections were well-made, with maximum contact.
    Before the first charging session, I opened the socket in the garage which we were using and checked it for good, well-made connections, and for tightness of those connections. I also confirmed that the plug-pins were well-gripped by the socket contacts (not sloppy through heavy usage).
    During charging (not at the end, when the EV's charging rate has tapered off), I sometimes stopped the charge, and checked the extension and the chargers' plug-pins for overheating, but they were never more than 'quite warm to the touch' (ie: you could comfortably touch them for as long as you wanted). Also, the cable itself was always cold to the touch, as it was nowhere near its maximum rating.
    If you understand what can happen with the wrong electrical hardware, and take steps to avoid those issues, you can charge an EV on a (suitable) extension perfectly safely. We recently got a 7kW charger fitted as part of a home upgrade, but we keep the self-made extension with the granny charger for emergencies.

    Cracking car & great to see an EV in your challenge. There’s really no problem putting in your workshop, don’t listen to the gloom & doom merchants. I train ppl how to keep themselves safe while working on EVs. If you need to isolate the HV system, the disconnect plug is under the Velcro cover where you found the coolant reservoir. It’s the green plug with the red tab. It’s only a 12v plug.

    • @rhiantaylor3446
      @rhiantaylor3446 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the battery itself had been hit then there might possibly have been a risk of fire which could happen days/weeks later so it is always something to think about if you are going to get more EVs on the channel.

    What is happening with the Vauxhall combo van
    Having had many years experience with this particular model I would think the smoke your experiencing is ether oil still in the exhaust system or these turbos suffer with oil passing the turbo seals especially when the engine is idling .
    When the turbo is spinning up the centrifugal oil seals throw the oil away from the turbo shaft and the smoke tends to decrease
    There is no guarantee the second hand turbo you purchase is in good condition.
    Iv had problems with these engines smoking and usually a reconditioned turbo from London Turbos usually fixes to problem.
    Will be looking out for your next video on this van
    Kind regards Jon.

    • @type17
      @type17 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, the damage is very light for a write-off, even a cat-N - maybe insurance companies are nervous about the unknown. It might be worth Rob & Chris keeping an eye out for cat-N EV's as, once the battery & powertrain isn't damaged, and the other damage isn't too severe, they would probably be a good bet.

      We bought a van from copart that was a cat S that only had glass damage (vandalised) , the windscreen is a structural piece so assumed that's why it was an S, obviously the screen on an I3 is not structural or the assessor didnt have a clue?

I have two 90's diesels on the drive and they are keepers, but I'll have an EV as soon as I can afford one with the range I need. Great to see you had some luck with this one. Keep at it!

    Somewhere near that EV battery will be a disable switch or a plug Once pulled it becomes as safe to work on as a standard ICE car allowing you to use dent pullers if required Big gamble there but looks as though its all good Chris as Captain Biggle with the flying goggles was pretty funny As for the cleaning nothing wrong with that to give a proper assessment of the damage to be repaired

    I have owed my EV now for just over 12 months and before I bought it I was very on the fence.
    Having run mine for 15000 miles I can honestly say that I am converted.
    Zero road Tax, Cheap charging at home, almost no servicing costs and the range is not an issue because after 3 hours driving you should take a break anyway so can give a 30 min charge and off I go for another 200+ miles.
    If you work it out, it costs me on average less than 2p a mile to run it.
    People that hate them probably have never driven 1 or can't afford one.
    Your BMW i3 looks like its going to be a great car and I can see Chris wanting to keep it as a run about.
    Great to see His face when he blasted it down His driveway.
    Can't wait to see the results and fingers crossed for you that those fault codes dissappear when the car is complete.

    People can say what they want about the i3. But it is without a quesotion the one of best "modern" EVs. It's amazingly light also comapared to the crap they proudce today. 1345kg is 900kg lighter than for example the i4.. Also since it has samsug sdi cells with a good bms you won't really se any degradation

    • @Iceeeen
      @Iceeeen ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zog97xy compared to what. yes the crazy "covid" prices are over, but so are they for combustion engine cars also. Prices on high end cars except for excotics have allways come down hard. Buy a high spec 1,3. 5 or 7 series and you will loose crazy amount of money until they are down to a specific amount and they stabalize. allways been allways will be. It is'nt any harder to work on a battery pack than a combustion engine. Cleaner hands and at the moment there is a gold mine for those that know how to do it. a battery module is not even that expensive.

    I owned three of them. Body parts are all coloured plastic- no paint used anywhere, the roof is full carbon fibre. Great car. Panels just pop on with clips. Only the chassis is aluminium. Watched Autoglass replace a screen - a nightmare & they sent a special team to do it.
    Would have bought another in 23 but BMW had stopped making them. Now own a VWiD3 which is conventional steel body and heavier.
    They are a great car to drive, you get 180 miles range. I have a 7KW home charger, the granny charger works BUT you need a heavy duty extension lead as it will run at a constant 13amps when charging.

    I test drove a Polestar 2 last year. I was booked to try the full fat 480bhp version but it was double booked, so I went for the run of the mill 220bhp version. It was the same output as my old BMW 325d but the first time I put my foot down I involuntarily swore out loud. A lot. Felt a hell of a lot faster than my BMW, and I suppose it's the instant torque that they have. To be honest, something like a Polestar 2 would be fine for me, I rarely have to drive very long distances and I could easily deal with the recharging when I do, but the cost and lack of a driveway make it impractical for me for now, and I suppose a lot of folks are in the same boat. A lot of people get salty about the change, and go on about the lack of sound, but most cars are humdrum 4 pots and sound crap anyway, no matter how tuned they are (IMO the more tuned they are the more crap they sound). Yes, I get that a good straight 6 or v8 has a really evocative sound, but that's not really a great reason to resist change on the whole. Good on you boys for taking a chance on something new.

    It’s crazy to think this was written off for such little damage but goes to explain why insurance premiums are higher on EVs.
    The correct procedure for accident repair to an EV is to remove the battery and quarantining it, an insurance approved body shop would also need to have fully trained technicians to handle the high voltage system.
    Retail value of this is probably around £19k, trade im guessing £15k, at auction a straight one might be £13k, it’s not worth all the hassle for an insurance company to repair it.
    Rob and Chris,I really hope this one doesn’t bite you, but it’s going to have to look very cheap to shift it.

  • @leonb2637
    @leonb2637 ปีที่แล้ว

    Likely the delay in parts and people to work on it, the months of rental charges for the owner/lessor, and the cost to fix, all added up to cheaper to write off by the insurance company. You can afford the time waiting for parts, lower parts and labor costs. I bet that will sell easy as you are close to London with its congestion fees are much lower for an EV.

EVs aren’t what was promised of them, and remove the government subsidies and incentives they are way too expensive for what they are. Still good to see them being rebuilt, but don’t get it twisted not everyone thinks the government should decide for the people (you know, democratically) especially when it benefits them financially.

    Be careful using extention cables with the 13a 'granny' charger!

    • @oldgitflying
      @oldgitflying ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's OK if you completely unroll the extension cable but if you don't and leave it overnight it'll warm up and probably melt. Been there done it. Drawing 10A through a coiled up extension will destroy the wire and probably trip the fuse. Nothing to do with it being an EV, just physics.

    • @rhiantaylor3446
      @rhiantaylor3446 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you need to use an extension cable best to build your own, a lot (most ?) that you might buy are not rated for 10 amps continuous for 20+ hrs at a time. As stated - cable capacity is a lot lower while still rolled up so don't use it for EV charging unless unrolled.

Is the power supply different over there to the Australian power. I have loved all the BMW cars i owned this car looks great.

      Two things there - one, don't buy cheap extension leads (I prefer to make my own) and if you have one on a reel, unreel it FULLY before using it. The same would apply if you were using a three-bar electric fire, of course.

    Use either a bilt & hamber clay bar (water is the lub) or a clay mit to remove tar spots. It will also remove any other imperfections like tree sap etc. Using white spirits will lift any polish on the bodywork as well as the tar.
