Mechanical engineer here. A lot of comments about the calipers. No this is neither the technically correct tool nor a very precise way of measuring precision machined parts, (you can expect +\- .005” on caliper measurements typically) but the scraping he is doing with the tool is most likely of little to no consequence depending on the material of the caliper edge. Many calipers have a hardened or even a carbide tip. You need to consider the relative hardness of the material. Mild steel is far softer than tool steel or carbide, and will cause little damage to the calipers.
You did very well on this project with the tools you had at hand. Don’t let people tell you that you should not do a thing purely because it is imperfect. If that were the case nothing would get done.

If a caliper is useable but not optimal what would you suggest? I have no hardware experience, I’m a programmer, but I think it will be fun to take on a project like this.

Great work brother. And remember . Don't care about negatives in the comment box . You are better than them . Some people can watch on a side without sweting and knowing challenges on the metal works .

Hey enginnering student here. First of all awesome project. The few improvements you could make are:
    - making the whole thing more rigid by screwing it down into a concrete slab for example
    - the axle for the chuck has way too much play, this won't allow you to get good finishes and form tolerances
    - for the turning dial which controls the slides you could get or make one that has an adjustable vernier scale so you could keep track your depth of cut

Pobre instrumento. Usa un calibrador digital para rayar y golpear. Mejor usas otro calibre para rayar o mejor aun. Usa la parte trasera del calibre y rayas con un rayador con punto de carburo. 😊

@@juancarlosreyes8090these sorts of calipers are pretty cheap these days. Cheap enough that they can without guilt be used like this and even sharpened a good number of times. About 10 bucks or so.

Although a good design for a bench top hobby lathe, it would be considered “super light duty”. It’s obvious you can’t get a good finish because your machine is too loose everywhere showing rough finishes. Though, you’re on the right track. At best you’ve created a working wood lathe, where precision isn’t as extreme as it is for metal lath(ing) standards.
If you focus on why machines problems you can find the solutions and quite possibly correct those mistakes. Not bad as an idea. Keep trying, never give up.

Just a suggestion, if you really really want to use those calipers to mark your work pieces, why not lay down some contrast like sharpie/pentel pen ink so you don't need to press and drag that poor tool on what looks to be roughly ground steel with mill scale? Or get some cheap chinese non-digital verniers and go to town with those?
I keep two calipers on me when i work (used to be three when i worked in a gun factory). A mitutoyo and a chinese no-name - i used the mitu to get measurements i can bet the farm on while the no-name gets all the abuse.

I dont like to be negative but this craftmanship and lack of care for quality is just like thorns in my eyes. 2 minutes in and i can see that its never gonna work. You dont use rails like that for a metal lathe. I can see that everything is crooked. Construction is weak in so many spots where you cant have any flex. You free hand drill the holes for high precision parts.. really? you have the tools you tool. Use them.
Not a single video with normal speed when using says it all. Even tho you try to fast forward the result you can still make out the extreme shaking and vibrations and see the part that seriously would look more smooth making it using a drill and a file.. I can tell it screams and vibrate like the apocalypse even without you showing me.. but i guess you can still probably do wood and plastic; if you can accept tolerance of +/-2mm. Offensive

Considering that Harbor Freight wants to sell you a Chinese-made mass market lathe for $749 vs this, I’d rather take this.
And to all the haters in the comments, saying and doing are two different things.
Just like all “opinions” out there, everyone has them. You wanna talk crap about how someone uses a tool, or how they did a process wrong, then you turn around and YOU make a video showing how it should be done. Otherwise, if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything and move on to another video. No one made you watch it, you chose to watch it.
At least he had the balls to publish the video in the first place. I’ve made hundreds of hours of videos. Only to not upload them because of non-encouraging comments like the ones provided here by “talkers” and not “walkers”.
@jeymous Keep making them vids and always make sure to read your comments to learn new / “other” ways to use tools and/or processes. Take care 😊
