Building a vertical mill from industrial scrap

- Here I’m adding vertical milling capability to my home-built lathe, again using mostly stuff from the local industrial scrap yard. A rather non conventional design, but for its compact size I think still a nice result. It's powered by a 500W DC motor, with home-build speed controller. The Mill chuck is in line with the lathe chuck centerline and able to move vertically and horizontally for milling slots. Thanks to the many TH-cam videos on machining, I was able to quickly get familiar with some milling techniques.
You can find the design files like 3D CAD drawings, electrical schematics and microcontroller firmware files on my website page: www.simprojects.nl/lathe_and_m...

Protect this guy at all costs.
Absolute genius. As an apprentice machinist I wouldnt even know where to start when building a mill/lathe!
As a journeyman machinist, I ALSO would no clue where to start building something like this. I’d like to buy one tho!
am 2nd year apprentice with 5 years exp. this guy is bloody insane.
At his scrapyard which seems to be really nice :D
this is professional of the highest level, even controllers he soldering and firmwire by himself, so there are no way to repeat this project for 99.9% of people
In a post apocalyptic situation this dude could restart civilization with coconuts, he truly has a talent
I’ve met him personally and he is amazing! 👍🏽
Ja ja ja.
Ok, hold up! I was impressed up until 10:52...Then he whips up his own circuit board and blows my mind!
I'm just jealous now 😭
That must be some scrapyard! 😂😂
i know what you mean best thing i could find would be a rusty file and worn out hacksaw blades lol
Industrial scrapyard called AliExpress
@@timbrown9961 😭😭😭😭😭🤣
They throw out perfect tool steel bar?...lol
Morris chuck is not suitable for lateral forces, it's meant only for drilling. You should use collet chuck
I would love to have a scrap yard with that type of JUNK. This is one of the bets video's i have seen in a while. I'm not sure what you do for a day job but i sure bet they don't pay you enough. MacGyver.
I'm impressed by that 500w motor that can mill steel
Same here. Normally it would require to reduce the speed trough gears to achieve more torque.
So I was super impressed with everything...and then you started on the speed controller...who even are you👀 this is the type of artisan I aspire to be
I salute you Roland, that is an impressive and inspiring achievement, and a pleasant video to boot!
Nice of you to shout out to other YTers too!
I like your simple solutions to complex problems. Genius!
You sir are a genius! Keep up the great work! Thank you for sharing your projects/videos!
Glad to see you back online, Roland!
Well done. Best part: "non CAD" electronic build... and the step by step to get the parts out of the machine ... by itself. Brilliant!
mesmerizing amounts of skill and knowledge coming all together
Wow. Great job. I am really surprised how well it aligns, and even cuts in the steel pretty well, slow, but well. Make sure it is all aligned, tightened, and lubricated well.
How really I can't enjoy watch this build. Totally insane and genius way of doing thing. I am really jealous, how such personne can design, build, program, weld electronic components with such precision. Thank you for sharing and giving a lecon.
What an excellent build. You are a true craftsman. That PCB building method is genius.
WOW! I know this is an older video but man you have some serious skills! The amount of knowledge in different skill sets is staggering. You have a vast wealth of knowledge my friend! Thankyou for showing us just a fraction of this knowledge and what can be accomplished with such skills…Such skills take a lifetime of learning and I do appreciate you sharing!
That's an absolute work of art. The amount of skill shown here is idk I cant even put a word to it. Great precision on every inch. Good job
Your skill and patience is amazing !
For being built entirely from industrial scrap that is quite impressive! Great job!
Full stack industrial magician here! So impressive. Thank you for sharing
I am so impressed by the skills that this man has. Everything is so well made!!
You have amazed me, Roland. A very nice build.
Man u just did a fantatic job! All that knowledge and creativity in one person. U got my biggest respect sir
This video was amazing to watch. You are incredible man. I learned a lot from watching this video. Your innovation was top notch. I loved how you made the addition to your machine from spare parts. I am sure your work shop is outrageous. Great job man.!!
I don't know how you can have so few subscribers. Your work is just staggering!
Fantastic stuff, gifted and clever man, thanks for sharing your build.
Holy cow, this is the coolest thing i have seen all year
... or last year, frankly. Just amazing.
I just watched your lathe build then this and I must say am very very impressed, you definitely earned this sub, must watch the rest of your videos, you inspire me to push myself further. Thanks man.
Came for the industrial scrap.... love the synth music.
I'm a little sceptical about the chuck but I LOVE your vice design and your PCB method.
Marvelous work... I wish I had half your skills.... yes, and your scrap yard.
I like that as you build tooling, you build the tools that make the tooling better.
You have a lot knowledge to offer ! I am quite impressed with your lathe/mill build !! Very well done sir. I have subscribed and plan on watching the rest of your video's. Whenever I come across someone with this type of knowledge I make it a point to learn everything I can from them. I really hope you continue to make more video's like this , I really enjoy all the learning I get from them. Thank you .
Keep on rolling Roland ! What a golden scrap
This was hella impressive. I think my jaw dropped a bit at 10:30 when you switched from showing off your mechanical design skills, into PCB design. And all summed up in a 25 minute video. My man!
I absolutely just felt the same way when I was taking mental notes. I need more time to be able to do all of this. I need it all done like last week.
That's a very very nice build and you really presented it well.
You are legitimately a genius, sir.
The amount a knowledge needed to avoid all kind of traps is impressive. Well done!
Very simple but really professional. Very very nice build and you really presented it very well
Awesome job Roland, very fine work indeed.
Mechanical, electrical, and firmware design skills? Ok, I'm duly impressed.
Great job! Thanks for the design on your website, the video and the explanations. Perfect job.
Excellent clear build description. Thanks for this.
I love your knowledge man.. it's as if I'm looking at a man who knows Engineering as a whole; not just by its division like Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic.. His skill is second to none..
Very cool man! Love to see more stuff like this.
Thats a lot of work and now you have a cool machine.
I thoroughly enjoyed that video, I so long for a lathe and mill but prices have become ridiculous for even the most worn out beaten up old things so I am leaning towards building one myself and this video has been a great inspiration especially as I am minded to maybe create my own watches in the future.
I have no idea why people thumbs down effort and ingenuity like this? Seriously great work!
Beautiful work
Awesome. Very Awesome. Ingenious in it's simplicity.
What amazing job, great job sir. I really need this one on my garage 😭😭
Awesome build! You have an impressive understanding of machining, electronics and programming along with a jaw dropping level of creativity. If you ever desire to increase the rigidity of your machines, I would look at using epoxy granite. It's far more rigid than traditional cast iron and much easier to work with.
Stunning vid, watch through transfixed, superb end result.
Another great project Roland. I always like your videos
im impressed you can use a 1/2 inch end mill! somehow the frame is rigid enough?! very cool
Amazing machine. Thank you for sharing your process.
OMG! I just found this channel - stopped a few minutes in, subscribed, bookmarked and I'm thinking, 'How come you don't have millions of subscribers?' - no doubt they are on their way!!!!!!
People don’t seem to appreciate raw skill anymore I guess.🤷🏽♂️
Nicely Done. Thanks for sharing your results.
Impressive, most impressive!
Amazing built, congratulations!!!!
Amazing build. Congratulations!
Crazy amazing job, super well done
great channel and enormous experience and knowledge!
Extraordinary effort. Enjoyed.
Brilliant! You are a kindred spirit! I created pcb mill with scrap parts.
Really nice job man, congratulations.
If more people were as creative and constructive as this, the world would be a better place. Nowadays, some people - grown adults - seem to be unable to tie their own shoes. Not so for Roland :)
Really impressive work!
Loved that vise!!! Will build one for sure! Subscribed
You are insane, just like us who are watching your videos. Awesome!
Accidenti che bravo! All'inizio avevo dei dubbi sulla rigidità ma alla fine del video sono svaniti quasi completamente. Un lavoro superbo. Molto ben progettato e realizzato. Bravissimo.
Amazing project, I will study it duly before completing the project for the aluminium structure of my milling machine

its sooooooooo impressive !!!!! awesome build!!
Very nice idea brother.
This is awesome. Thank you for sharing! Just super!
really impressive! thank you!
I wanted to have this ability to build tools like you.
Keep working at machining instruction, YT will show you about everything. In time you will be competent too. Buy or build a small lathe and mill. Have fun.
This is fantastic, and also indicates that I do not know where the cool scrapyards are. XD
Apparently they're all in the Netherlands. LOL............................
Great video and nice job.
