None of these old clips come close to capturing the breadth of Matthews' talent. Not only was he hard as nails, but he could "sell the candy" like no other, and dodge and weave his way through heavy traffic. I remember one instance that sums it all up, he was surrounded by about five opponents and it looks like he's dancing and going through a maze and after weaving through the traffic he missed the goal. Only a point, so it doesn't get on the highlight real, which is a pity as it was one of the finest examples of a player extricating himself from a highly congested situation.
They didn't have cameras at every game like they do now, so these clips don't do justice. Instead of judging based on this seemingly random selection of clips, consider that stats will tell the real story. eg. in 1977 he averaged about 27 possessions a game, playing as a midfielder AND won the Coleman with 90 GOALS. Think about it. 90 goals in a season while averaging 27 possessions. Staggering. It is hard to imagine how that is even possible, but it happened. Can you get any more dominant than that?
When he became old and slow, Allen Jeans just parked him in the goal square and he won more Colemans as a small key-position forward. I only went to the footy once a year as a kid and saw him in his twilight years. In the one match I saw (early 80s) he kicked 13 goals at VFL park vs. Geelong. Another year in the one match I went to he kicked 11. And then in another it was 8 goals! It seemed like he was doing it just for me ;)
His capacity to dominate the game consistently throughout his career makes him rightly recognized as the greatest player ever. Not by these few "highlight" reels. Gary Ablett Snr is rightly recognized as having the most freakish talent of all time, but Matthews was the more complete player, leaving his mark and heavy influence in every game, week in, week out, year after year. This showreel is just lazy, the AFL needs to go into the basement and go over the dodgy old reel-to-reel tapes from the 70s and make a presentation that is more genuinely representative than this hodgepodge.

He only won a Coleman once in his career in 1975. He played against too many good forwards Peter McKenna, Doug Wade, Peter Hudson, Bernie Quinlan etc.

He has to be the greatest of all time, his stats are insane, and he had great skills, toughness as well. The complete player.

Last week I watched a game from 1983 and a couple of games from 2018, and in the 1983 game a couple of times I was actually afraid because of how hard some of the players attacked the ball. Whereas in the modern games I would notice that often players are not actually attacking the ball, but just running near it. Also, the speed in 1983 was just as fast, if not more so, than in 2018, and the players usually played the whole game, with zero bench time. Quarters were sometimes 25 minutes also, unlike the 20 minutes quarters in the modern game.

Or a midfielder who played his last few seasons a small forward but almost his whole career in the midfield kicks over 900 goals! Yeah plenty of them around🤣😂! 4 flags as a player, 4 flags as a coach, one of the best rovers of his generation and as he got slower with age became a full forward and kicked 900 goals. Put them in a ring at their peak and Lethal would beat the suitcase out of Dusty.
Mathews is among the greatest ever to play the game. Dusty doesn't come close.
