Late, but I'm quite sure that item collection is completely unaffected by rank. The rank increasing as far as I know is only determined by time. Your rank by the end of Stage 1, 2 and 3 is respectively 42, 54 and 64 (as seen from the Clear Bonus). By the time you got to the Five Magic Stones, your rank was already maxed out, so avoiding items does not help making patterns easier on the whole.
speed is very important, and the damage with agility at max power is actually pretty strong compared to defensive, attack type is too slow to make it worth the damage.

It may be quite possible that the attack is always in a pattern. From the looks of the video, Mima always does the same attack before she does the star pattern.

The only random element is which attack she chooses when she starts a phase.
