News of the Times Episode 259 | 1700s
Love and Murder, a dark timeless theme. In today’s episode we jump back to American revolutionary times to look at three cases where the dark side of love combines with murder.
1721 and Matthew Clarke, in want of money, slays a barmaid. What made this crime so horrific is that he did it whilst kissing her.
1791 and “legal chastisement” spills over to murder. An interesting case that gives a window into life as a wife in 18th century England.
1794 and a mistress of a landed gentleman has been dumped as he moves forward and weds another. Now ruined and with no prospects in sight, Anne plots revenge.
Three cases from the 1700’s where love and murder merge into one is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

Thank you! 🙏🙏We really enjoy the stories from Georgian times, although the language is a bit unweildy and the resources tend to be more scant. Tomorrow's episode looks at aristocracy in the 1700's - oh my! 🫢Jeffrey epstein possibly took lessons from one of the cases we fetaure. Hope you like it.

Glad you enjoyed! We were not sure how this one would be received - the language is definitely awkward back then. Thank you, as always, for your support! 🙏

Unfortunately for him, Matthew Clark 's roguishness went too far, resulting in the murder of the poor maid!! I do feel sorry for her and his jilted fiancee!!
The poor wife in the second case didn't deserve to be murdered!! A spouse doesn't have the right to "chastise" their partner, whatever the circumstances!! In fact, I can't believe husbands were allowed "justifiable chastisement" of their wives at one time!! Again, I feel sorry for the murdered woman and her orphaned child!!
As for the third case, I don't condone what she did!! Murder is NEVER worth it!! I feel sorry for the murder victim and his widow, and Ann, to some extent!!
Thanks for yet another EXCELLENT video, Robin!! ❤👍💞

Wives were the property of their husbands, just like cattle etc, so they had the right to chastise them. Upon marriage any money or property that the women had, automatically became the husbands. Even in the 1960's abusing your wife was not a criminal offence, unless you went too far and caused GBH or ABH. Police would not get involved in domestic disputes.

Yes! We thought that was interesing - "legal chastisement" - OMG! The Matthew case - we had nightmares imagining it... how very awful. 😞

My comment disappeared again. I enjoyed the three cases and I thought that case one and two would result in the death penalty and case three would end in confinement to an insane asylum. Take care 🦋

Oh Brenda - so very very odd!!! Gremlins! 😡That is our best explanation. It seems to be running smoothly this time for the majority of others. Grrrr. Sorry! 🙏
We were not sure if these would go down well - the language is very different! We really like the pre-victiorian stories as well as the usual - it is incredible to think the first story is over 300 years old!
BTW, we now, (FINALLY) have an assasins episode in pre-production (that means loads and loads of research)! Sorry for the delay there. We have loads of baby assassin stories - but no one really wants to hear about children being killed. Finding a paid assassin, without this being political, has been tricky. Our excuse - any good assassin was never caught! Thank you, as always, for your wonderful support! 🙏❤️

Yes, quite quite terrible! Times were different (hopefully) back then...🙏
