    There's something ironic in regards to hearing about a piece of Capellan territory being attacked by a group named "Smithson's Chinese Bandits".

      @SvenVanDerPlank  ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I don't go into the history of the Merc units but Smithson's Bandits are distinctly anti-Capellan. Their name is a deliberate insult.

      I'm not sure how I'm going to cover them. I want to stick to the idea that these videos are set in 3025, so obviously I can't speculate on Clan Wolverine because that's beyond what anyone in the Inner Sphere would know. I never cared about 3025 'Mechs appearing before their introduction when I was working on the earlier vids and amazingly, not one person has corrected me on it. I would love a mod or some Stellaris type game based on BattleTech to be made. I would love to play it like with the mods for HBS BattleTech, to where we could really feel what it was like during the Succession Wars. Its a shame nothing like it exists because I love maps and stuff. Aside from that, I love your stuff and keep up the good work and can't wait for future videos.

    • @TheKeyser94
      @TheKeyser94 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paradox stopped working with third parties after they made Battletech, even if the game was very successful, for some reason, now I becoming really tired of Stellaris, is not like the original game, that I loved, the updates really destroyed the flow the game, space travel was fast and you really needed tactics to defeat your enemies, now is a slog of colonising planets and very slow ship movement.

    • @walshmeister88803
      @walshmeister88803 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheKeyser94 Oh I understand how slow Stellaris has become, I've been there since the game came out. Its just that if I think about it, the games I played previously in those early days went by way to quickly. Stellaris is a game that I like getting lost in and can play for hours during a single game and not get tired of it until I see the clock and its like 4AM. I get your grievances on how much they changed the game but realistically speaking, Stellaris cannot stay the same or play the same way like it did back in 2016. It had to evolve in someway, and with a lot of these changes, they pretty much came from both fans of the game and Paradox themselves. We start asking for more and they sometimes do a good job at delivering....sometimes, but hey we always like a decent Paradox Game because they have a tendency to not disappoint us 100% of the time, witch is good for them and us.
      back to Battletech yea its a shame Paradox didn't exploit a potential cash cow because BattleTech isn't one of their main line games so on a business stand point it makes sense. However I really do hope a mod or a game of some kind where we have active participation in Space and Ground combat. Could be a cool Mech Commander 3 game for all we know, but I want a complex strategy game that allows me to fight in space and then grind for a few objectives on the ground to capitulate a world. Basically a mix of Wargame Red Dragon with any real time Space strategy game like Stellaris or Empire at War for that matter.

    • @SvenVanDerPlank
      @SvenVanDerPlank  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I wasn't familiar with the term Retrotech. Primitive Technology isn't something that has come up in any of the sources I've read or eras I'm familiar with. I know if relates to the very earliest designs which I briefly touched on back in the Age of War but the TROs for those designs are Jihad era. I don't want to jump around too much on my end so unlikely to make a video on it at the moment. Technological regression is definitely an element of the 2ndSW so it's a discussion that'll likely come up at some point then.

      @Zattack19 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SvenVanDerPlank Fair enough! I consider it a interesting subject as its always a second line development in the more regressed areas of the Sphere, almost a re-emergence of what once was but not committing to the high octane developement of Helm Memory technology, clantech or stuff going on into the Jihad. Makes for a interesting mix of old and new when considering both exist and likely fight against or with one another on the edges of the great houses

    The real issue with Ilsa Liao's offer is not that being First Lord was meaningless, it's that it meant everything for Paul Davion. His authority kf Duke of New Avalon rested completely on his status of First Lord. If that needed Liao recognition, then Paul's absolute political power was legally questionable. If Ilsa had offered this privately, Paul might have accepted and a Liao-Davion alliance might have actually occurred, especially since (iirc) theu were both unmarried at this point.

    Makes me wonder what could have happened if Paul Davion accepted Ilsa's offer, and then go on to at least pause the fighting. As the TVTropers would say: Nice Job Breaking It, "Hero".

    • @SvenVanDerPlank
      @SvenVanDerPlank  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I mean Paul did pretty well for himself even without accepting a Liao ceasefire. I think his grandfather would have jumped at the offer if it had come earlier in the war but by this point Davion was on a roll.

    • @seanmac1793
      @seanmac1793 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I mean, I doubt that house Liao would have put any real backing behind. I mean, they only moved for thier self interest during the Star League Civil War, they wouldn't have thrown real support behind Paul's much more dubious claim. It was a shrewd offer but there was nothing for Paul to gain by accepting it

    • @sepion85
      @sepion85 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@seanmac1793 I beg to differ. Yes, Paul would have given up the last of the Chesterton Worlds for the backing to an empty Title. However, he could have more or less secured his borders for years and concentrated his forces against the DC. Furthermore you can't forget that while Paul might have seen the Title as First Lord as an empty one, he didn't rescind his claim to it. You could argue that the claim to the Title of First Lord was just a convenient excuse to sate his blood lust and murder millions of people on both sides. In the end the civilians are worth nothing to the successor lords.

    • @ssjjshawn
      @ssjjshawn ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sepion85Execpt the Chesterton Worlds are also highly industrial with a large population. They aren't just random worlds to be given over without a thought, they are strategically highly important to the Federated Suns.
      You can say its bloodlust, or its an honest liberation of Terrorty during an Offense war vs the Cappellans. Both can be true even. Either way the Chesterton Worlds have been apart of the FedSuns since before the Cappellan Confederation existed. Its their worlds, for 400 years. You don't just give those up, those are YOUR worlds, YOUR people.
      Bloodlust or not, thats how it works. You don't just lay over for an invasion.
      And at this point, yes the Star League was completely dead and gone. Focusing vs the Draconian advance more wouldn't be possible as Davion - Liao Ceasefires are a joke to both sides, even into 3152, so no units wouldn't be moving across the sphere enmass.

    Fun fact, Poulsbo is the name of a town in the area that is said to become Unity City. In The Warrior Trilogy it's said that Bangor base is on that planet... Which is the name of the US Navy base that's right outside of the town.

    • @SvenVanDerPlank
      @SvenVanDerPlank  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Unity City is further south on the peninsula because they head north to Gorst to stop the RWA forces during the coup. Bangor Base might be where the 4th Amaris Dragoons are stationed though. It's where I put them during my video on the topic.

    • @CRYGraves
      @CRYGraves ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SvenVanDerPlankThat's what I get for listening to your video while working, I miss all the cool maps and stuff. • @SvenVanDerPlank
      @SvenVanDerPlank  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah, the Tacoma base becomes Fort McKenna. They evacuate High Command there on the way to Mount Baker before it too gets overrun. The Citadel and Fort Cameron are one and the same, the former is built inside the latter, and I'm pretty sure they're not based on an existing facility unless I missed something. They use tunnels under Puget Sound to reach McKenna so I put it arbitrarily on the southern end of the peninsula.

      New colonies are established going forwards, and while a handful of dead worlds are resettled, many more disappear. Humanity never again gets back to Star League highs of ~3000 inhabited systems.

    I'm not a fan of the BattleTech 2018 campaign backstory, it comes off as though it was originally set on the opposite side of the Inner Sphere with a last minute change of putting it where it is and the Combine swapped with the Taurians and Rasalhauge swapped with Canopus with no regard for the fact that neither faction's actions made sense. I genuinely believe that last minute swap hypothesis because there's no level of understanding of those factions where that makes any sense.

      I've not played the game so can't really comment but literally in the next episode in this series the two are going to go to war with each other over the territories within the Aurigan Reach. They did learn that was an extremely stupid thing to do but another 200 years have passed since then, plenty of time to forget those lessons.

      @@SvenVanDerPlank it's less that they did and more the reason behind it. My hypothesis stems from the fact it makes sense as motivation for the Combine and Rasalhauge coupled with the location making their absence logical due to the Clans steamrolling them being a good exploration as to why. Plus that region is pretty empty to begin with.
