    Thanks for your thoughtful review. I completely agree with you. Thought you might like to hear of my recent experience with the car, a 2017 with about 2,000 miles. I am experiencing the exact same issue that you mention in your review: first and second gear are exceedingly sensitive, touchy, as you say, with little in the way of clutch "feedback' in regard to the actual sweet spot of engagement, which is particularly frustrating when on an incline in first gear. As you mentioned, third, forth and fifth work flawlessly.
    It is odd to have such a well designed car with this such a noted problem.
    For years I have driven manual transmissions (my other car is a 2001 special edition Miata), and am well versed in driving same. I love the added control that this offers in most cases.
    It appears that 2018 now will feature the added 6th gear and, I believe a bit more power.
    This, I imagine will be a very welcome addition to the evolution of the Crosstrek.
    Thanks again for your note!

      We're now at 18k miles in the car, and either the clutch has gotten broken in or it's broken me in. I still find it a bit touchy in the first two gears, but not too bad. My main complain continues to be the lack of adequate high-speed gearing, so I'm glad the 2018 may rectify that problem. It's a great car off road and in the snow!

      I have a 2017 premium 5 speed and I think it sucks. I like the car, but hate how it drives. Most un-smooth vehicle I've ever driven, no clutch pedal feel; touchy throttle and horrible rev hang. Have always owned manuals and I enjoy driving, but this one just flat out sucks. YMMV

      I have a 2020 Impreza and this is the SAME EXACT issue with its manual transmission as well. Subaru doesn't know how to make clutches or something because it is a dog compared to my Civic.

    Your video was a nice surprise in that it mirrored my concerns with my 15 Impreza. I got rid of the OEM shift knob immediately and still have to consciously focus on shifting with 1-2nd gear to avoid jerking around like it’s my first time with a manual. I’ve driven manuals exclusively for 40 years!

    • @metaspencer

      Those manual transmission cars are getting harder to find -- but our Crosstrek is still going strong (and great in the snow). We got another Crosstrek a few years later with the 6-speed. It's a bit better

      I’ve been able to shift my 15’ Impreza smoothly if you wait like 1.5 seconds before letting the clutch out, and let it out to about 3/4 of its travel, and apply just a tiny tiny bit of throttle. I also have a v6 accord with a 6 speed which is so much easier to drive smoothly. That thing has the best shifter and clutch feel ever.

    Great review. I test drove the Cross Trek in 2016. I found it needing a 6th gear. The revs were a tad high in 5th. It needed a 6th.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I hear the 2019 version is getting that 6th speed in North America, a gear that has been in the car on other continents. Just took time.

    • @TheTravellingBuddha
      @TheTravellingBuddha 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your right. It comes with the six speed now. I was told at a car show in 2017 (Canada) and I was actually waiting for this. The only issue I have now is the power to weight ratio, Im going to wait for a test drive. Im trying to watch reviews. But all the reviews do is talk through the car spec. They are dull as hell, tell you nothing about their interpretation of the drive and practically in everyday situations. Thats why I liked this video. No bullshit and to the point.
      I drive a 2002 CRV Manual. You can manipulate the AWD by going in second with high revs to send power to the rear. But Honda stopped the manuals in 2005. I looked at Forrester manual but they stopped the manuals in 2018 and are hard to find.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ll tell you this: the power is not impressive. Pulling onto the highway with four people in the car is dicey compared to a turbo. But it’s a great snow car

  • @montythegiant

    Your video gave me some peace of mind, thank you! I was feeling like an idiot the first few weeks in my Crosstrek after having driven a WRX wagon for 12 years because it was taking off so jerky, even when I tried to feel it out better. I've successfully driven an STi with a really light clutch installed...so my 2014 Crosstrek really threw me off. I've gotten a little more used to it (3 months later). The rev hang drives me nuts, as I used to use engine braking a ton in my WRX. This thing maintains speed too well for that to even be very helpful anymore :( Still, I'm happy I was able to find this car. It was 40 minutes away, the right price, any only had 32,000 miles on it.

    The "automatic" is a CVT - and is sluggish and a bit weird at 80 MPH here in Wyoming because of undulating highways. The CVT has a "manual" feature that I believe is fantastic. For highway driving, I exclusively use "manual" now that I've discovered it.
    Paddle shifters work quicker than "stick shifters" to boot.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried those paddle shifters on the car I test drove, and really liked them! Very nice and easy to use. Of course, turning and shifting would be tough, but that situation probably doesn't come up that much. :)

    • @michaeloberly6129
      @michaeloberly6129 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the paddle shifters are surprisingly nice. I use them all the time, too. I pull around 2100 RPM at 70, and maybe 2400 RPM at 80. I don't think the higher RPMs on the manual are a big deal, just might be slightly noisier on the highway. I was tempted by the stick version, but they didn't have one at my dealer either, and I just decided to get the CVT.

  • @ai4kk
    @ai4kk 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Yeah, I'm in Tallahasee, FL and in order to get my manual, I had to order my base level Impreza through a dealer 150 miles away in Gainesville who got it from another dealership 300 miles away in Melbourne. the only option it came with was the all-weather floor mats.
    3,000 RPM is nothing for a Subaru. I cruise at 80 all the time.
    Of course, don't forget, the Crosstrek is supposed to be an offroad vehicle so it's going to get the lower gear ratios. My Impreza is still close to 3,000 but considering that the redline is over 6K, I'm not concerned. i routinely sustain over 3,000 RPM when pulling a heavy trailer.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was surprised to learn that the dealers don't stock stick shifts -- but I guess folks like the ease of the automatic. I guess I'll just have to get used to the high revs ...

    • @ai4kk
      @ai4kk 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just checked tonight on the way to work. 60MPH has me about 2,600 RPM and 80 is about 3,300. Redline is about 7,000 so we're nowhere near maxing the engine out

    The rpms are actually pretty reasonable for a small displacement 4 cylinder. I had a Mazda 6 with a 2.3 it reved at 3000 rpm at 60 mph, the Crosstrek revs the same as my old Ranger 5 speed 2.3 at 60 mph. At 60 mph you need to keep the rpms up there's a lot of resistance against the car and a small 4 cylinder won't produce enough power below 2000 rpm realistically. I've driven both the 5 speed and cvt Impreza and the cvt is a bit annoying on anything besides a flat open highway. Any small dip in the road or any increase speed needed requires the cvt to increase rpms from 1500 rpm and downshift and I do mean really any small dip or speed change, it becomes annoying and would be nice if it reved higher like the 5pd. The test I did on the cvt and 5 speed for mpg on the same stretch of road and conditions same day the 5 speed did slightly better than the cvt for mpg.

    Nice video metaspencer, what version is your Crosstrek, looks like a base one? I got a Sport CVT in mid August and I really love it. At first, I was not a big fan of the CVT (always had manual cars) but it is by far the best CVT I have tried so far! My only gripe is the lag when you floor it, but I have read and noticed that it is a lot quicker when you put the throttle about 3/4 down.
    It definitely needs a turbo but I have noticed that it really shines in the snow! I live in Eastern Ontario and winter can be extreme! I had the most fun in manual mode in a parking lot with a good 7 inches of snow! :)
    This is my second AWD, I previously had a Suzuki SX4 which was a blast for winter drift but the Crosstrek is a notch above!
    As for the interior, I really like it and prefer it to my parent's 2017 Forester, which was bought the same day as my Crosstrek! :D

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We did get the base model with the manual. I test drove the CVT and really liked it, but just couldn't figure out how you could use those paddle shifters while turning. The paddles seems like a nice idea but not for driving on roads that are anything but straight.
      As for lag, I know what you mean: it's just not the most powerful engine. But with that said, snow performance is excellent!

    I bought a 2016 CVT Crosstrek last winter. The manual wasn't available with the sunroof, and I wanted the sunroof. A Webasto sunroof could work for those of you with a manual Crosstrek. I like the chain-driven CVT with paddles OK so far. It feels better than a 4cyl/CVT Altima I rented a few years ago.
    This little hatch is HEAVY. It feels like a Grand Tourer to me, on the road, rather than a sporty hatch. My '95 Jeep YJ had a similar curb weight.
    The ride is surprisingly nice for such a small economy car (especially considering the solid-feeling handling for basically a LIFTED Impreza hatch), and the boxer motor is smoother than most 4cyls I have had.
    I already have skids, a high-flow cotton airfilter, yellow fogs, an Eco-hitch, a multi-mount winch, and 225/60-17 AT Trails. Rockers and a rear diff-locker are next. Intake spacers may follow too. The 2.0L could use a bit more power, IMO.
    MPG is way better than EPA ratings, but I use the cruise a LOT on my 50mile commute. I've gotten 45+MPG on a tank, with stock tires. I can still get 35-40MPG with the taller AT Trails.

    It seems like the few MT cars available today tend to have a short cruising gear, even if they have 6th gears. No wonder automatics are now getting better MPGs. We had a hard time buying a new 2012 Honda Fit Sport in 5MT and when the 3rd generation came out with a 6th gear it was the same ratio as our 5th gear even if it had more HP. We're now in the market for the new Impreza Sport hatch in MT or the upcoming Crosstrek if they offer it in MT. Since dealers aren't carrying any MTs in stock we might finally surrender to the +$800 CVT, which obviously gets better mileage, better for resale, and Eyesight becomes available. My real concern is how much acceleration and fun driver involvement the CVT kills.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everything you say I agree with. Everything is pushing us to buy automatic transmissions, and your story about the 5th and 6th gears being the same is crazy. I had a Jetta with a 6th gear that was perfect at high speeds ... but I had to sell it back.
      Good luck with your new Impreza Sport! It's gonna have some power and be fun to drive either way.

    • @Phrancis5
      @Phrancis5 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't even need a 6th gear, just a taller 5th gear. It should already be a tad lighter with no torque converter so I don't understand why they can't give it a similar cruising gear ratio as the automatic. I don't want more wasteful RPMs, less mpgs than the CVT, and I don't mind dropping a gear to pass a truck. Rowing the gears is why we want a manual. Heck, my wife wants the manual and that's rare!

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well said: a 6th gear is just how some makers have made highway driving possible at low RPMs ... a better 5th would be great. It's too bad about the high RPMs on the manual, as I also really like everything else about it.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have mixed feelings about the stick shift in this car. On the plus side, it's very hard to find stick-shift cars these days! On the negative side, the shifting is a bit touchy at the lower gears ... and the transmission is geared in such a way that you get very high RPMs on the highway.
      The best thing about the stick is how it performs off road and in snow, in my opinion. In those conditions, it's unbeatable. The manual transmission also splits the power evenly between front and rear wheels, which is nice.

    Taller tires would not only lower RPMs at higher speeds, but would also increase fuel economy. The trade off is slightly slower acceleration.

      Yep, that is where I was going with this. Crosstreks look sweet lifted with the right wheel/tire combo. Lifting vehicles generally lowers fuel efficiency a tad, but I think it would still benefit @ highway speeds. And if you do any off roading it is a no brainer. If sticking to the streets I would see if a slightly taller tire would clear(google search forums) without lifting next time you need new tires.

    I really love my stick shift CrossTrek, but the problem I have is that if I change gears lower than 3k I will always hear the engine knocking... yes, cruising on a flat road is not problem after getting momentum... the problem is when lifting and getting to the cruising speed. The dealer said to change gas or to change gears at a higher RPM, around 2.5 to 3.5... I've been doing that and I don't hear the knocking, but this is the first stick shift I ever drove that requires that. Has any one else encounter this problem?

      Metaspencer, you and one other person all over the internet (for now) are the only ones that have talked about the high RPMs (specially for the manual transmission). I was thinking of trading my 2015 for the 2017 because I thought mine had an issue. Now I will keep it, until 2022 at least if that model is way better, if not, I'll keep this one which I love by the way.
      Anyhow, that other guy, AWDfreak (www.subaruxvforum.com/forum/engine-drivetrain/48873-5-speed-manual-transmission-feedback-5.html) said this which I have found to be happening with my XV (brackets [ ] are my comments):
      --------------------------------------
      1st gear is short, but I personally want it a tiny bit shorter. [I like it just the way it is]
      2nd gear is perfect, especially for aggressive passing at speeds between 35 MPH and 55 MPH. It's also the gear I use most for my fun mountain pass drives.
      3rd gear is also fine as it, I use it for freeway/highway passing up until 85 MPH. [I never go over 3rd gear on the street - up to 45 mph]
      4th gear is the gear I use for passing above 85 MPH and the gear I use to get very near top speed. I like how the tach and speedo are nearly perfectly in sync when I'm in 4th. [I use 4th gear from 45 mph to 70 mph and it feels just right that way with my XV]
      5th gear, being the only overdrive gear, needless to say, is the fuel-saving gear once above 40 MPH. Not recommended for any kind of acceleration except for top speed. [I only use 5th gear if over 75 mph]
      --------------------------------------
      If I shift lower than these speeds for the respective gears I will hear engine knocking always... don't you? If I drive it like AWDfreak describes I will never hear engine knocking and it feels powerful, peppy... So far, I have gotten used to the high RPMs and I'm loving it... specially when doing double-clutching (no revving with double clutching though). Heal-toe is not easy to do on this car and I found it not necessary, yet...
      Thank you both. My mind is at ease now about this RPM subject.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the detailed note! In general, I agree with the notes from AWD Freak. For me, I don't follow strict rules for shifting (speed or RPMs) but tend to go with the feel and sound of the situation. Hills and what I'm towing will often influence shifting times. But I never hear knocking and you certainly don't ever want to lug an engine. Take care!

Anything above 3500 rpm on any car at cruising speed I find is unrelaxing and a bit noisy. Secondly, in the UK this Subaru has 6 speed manual, which I would like next, and would make a big difference. Ive driven the Impreza hatch which has 5 speed manual and even at 70 it was fine because the engine settles down and having character with being a boxer engine it was not a problem at speed. Enjoy,

However, honestly I feel like it’s teaching you how to drive IT’S transmission. Kinda forget what you know about others. All of the vehicles I have had in my life (about 10), were all manual and all 4 cylinders. 3000 rpm at 70 mph and 4000 rpm at 80 mph is about standard for 5 speeds manual.
    Manuals have the great advantage of total control over the RPM and torque. A weak engine with an automatic finds life with a manual. It is so much better to pass cars on two lanes highways by down shifting a manual than can be done with an automatic.

    • @metaspencer

  • @KarmicPatina
    @KarmicPatina 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Here are the 3 reasons to get the AUTOMATIC:
    1) I get it. Hear me out..I drove manuals my entire life...BUT---Paddle shifters on the automatic do virtually the same thing. The automatic gets better gas mileage (huge reason people always got manual transmissions in the past) and the CVT shifts silky smooth, which is VERY beneficial on slippery surfaces like rain, slush, snow and ice.
    IE: the manual is not linear and can "BREAK" traction due to shifting into a actual gear, making it tricky to do that perfectly smooth every time like the auto. No bueno on ice. I mean think about it...
    2) ALL snowmobiles use CVT transmissions, which makes total sense regarding the physics involved. One long smooth consistent acceleration is crucial when its on snow and ice. Deceleration is also enhanced by being consistent back down to standstill. Using the paddle shifters to slow down is magic on snow and ice. Just don't have to push a clutch...such a bummer?
    3) Last and most importantly, the automatic goes quietly down the highway at 80. The manual sounds like a droning vacuum cleaner on high suck. It gets old fast. Get the paddle shifters w/CVT. I have driven both extensively. The Automatic CVT rocks.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The more I drive the stick the more I think you might be right. But how do you turn and paddle shift? That seems like playing twister.

    • @KarmicPatina
      @KarmicPatina 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really want my vehicle(s) to last, so I tend to be pretty utilitarian when I drive my Subaru (I know..boring). I only use the paddles on downhills, uphills (rarely) and or slippery conditions. I love the way my car drives and corners, but I don't generally try to rev hard around corners rally'n it.
      Since it's all wheel drive all the time, I actually try to not torque the driveline by hard accelerations when the steering wheel is turned, and tend to time my accelerations for just before the turn(when the steering wheel is still straight), letting off during the apex and then accelerate again on the straight line pulls out of the turn (when the tires are straight again).
      If you truly want to rally around corners look at the rear wheel drive BRZ or the tunable WRX STI which lets you bias the differential to the rear wheels with a push of a button (still feels like a AWD, just less twister feel) they are both neat little carvers.
      BTW- I was a top producer in sales for Subaru for 2 years when I worked for them (2011-2013). I have driven everything they make extensively and currently have a 2012 Legacy 2.5 automatic. If I had a farm that I was driving around on and using the vehicle on dirt roads more than highways and such, I would consider the manual. But only in that context.
