      Back in the day, a British brigadier I knew fairly well remarked that after WWII, the Russians got the Prussians, and we got the ones the Prussians beat. Now the latter have submerged the former, and the last German army we will see for generations - if at all - is gone.

    I had a colleague whose father was a Soviet officer and had been serving in the group of the Soviet army in Germany in 60s and 70s. He told that the best Soviet conscripts were assigned to the troops in the DDR because they were supposed the first to attack the West. But in comparison with German soldiers the Soviet ones were not far than an average German soldier. All of them were characterized as highly educated and highly disciplined warriors on whom it was always possible to rely on. Also he told that there were special exercises when Soviet officers had an opportunity to command German troops and as he told it was the highest luxury he had ever had...

And the glorious British soldiers once again, having shit in their breeches, throwing away equipment and weapons, would have been waiting for fishermen on boats to sail to their sunny Britain. Steve is correct. Throughout the Cold War, the US and Nato never renounced first use of nukes for a reason. All WP armor concentrations, among other targets, far into the USSR western interior would be incinerated by cruise missles or tactical nuke air strikes shortly (VERY) after SACEUR determined a WP advance to be imminent (as in BEFORE it was about to happen). No presidential order necessary. By the 1980's, Soviet command and control centres could be eliminated within five minutes by Pershing II's based in Britain. None of this was going to end well for anyone, but if there was going to be a "loser", it wouldn't be Nato.

    These shots reminded me of a story.
    Czechoslovakia, approximately 70s. Representatives of a number of NATO countries arrived for some negotiations and, among other things, they were hunted. The foresters organized everything - they prepared positions for shooters in a large open clearing, found deer in the forest and drove them into the clearing. The diplomats are lying in their dens, waiting for the deer, stroking the bolts of their guns.
    At this time, a Russian tank company was returning from a training exercise. The commander was in a good mood - the exercises were successful, he expected gratitude, and maybe a bigger reward. His tanks rush along the forest road, their guns swinging rhythmically, and in general life is wonderful. At this moment, a herd of deer crosses the path of the tanks and runs off into the forest. The commander’s hunter’s instinct has kicked in, he is already imagining a soldier’s dinner of venison - the command “do as I do” is flying over the radio and a dozen roaring monsters made of Ural steel rush into the forest after the deer, destroying everything in their path. The commander hurries to uncover the turret heavy machine gun.
    First, a herd of deer jumped into the clearing with the diplomats, the tipsy guests began to shoot wherever they could - and at that moment the forest overturned and everyone immediately sobered up: a tank company flew into the clearing at full speed, and from the lead vehicle the commander opened fire from his heavy machine gun.
    The foresters then searched the forest for a long time for these diplomats. They spent the longest time looking for a diplomat from Germany - being an experienced Wehrmacht soldier who had served on the eastern front, he knew what to do when Russian tanks were flying at you: he hid so much in some crevice that they found him only with dogs.

    It would have been an invasion of 5000 to 6000 tanks and 600.000 to 700.000 troops. Warsaw pact tank units always had strong anti aircraft artillery and missile systems close by. And if one learned an important lesson from WW2: sheer mass will overcome less but higher quality numbers. Sowiets

    • @paladinsix9285
      @paladinsix9285 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Warsaw Pact only had a slight numerical edge over the NATO nations. The attacker would have needed a minimum 3 to 1, and preferably a 9 to 1 advantage to achieve a decisive victory. All NATO had to do was to build enough tanks, warplanes, and have enough trained troops that it was unlikely that the Soviet Union could win.
      Western nations had a greater economy, and only had to dedicate a much smaller portion of their economy to defense. The Soviet Union committed a much higher percentage of a smaller economy to warfare; thus reducing the growth of their economy. This is a major reason the Communists lost.
      NATO and the Warsaw Pact were basically evenly matched, however, to win the Soviet Union/Warsaw Pact had to be able to achieve significant superiority, and they were just not capable of doing that.
      The people of Europe, and the world are lucky that neither side initiated a war.

    The NVA is a historically well trained and equipped armed force of a German territorial state. East Germany didn't have much of the heavy industry and military technology needed to produce heavy military weapons, but they always produced the best light weapons. Most of their military equipment is provided by the Soviet Union and they do not cost much to equip. They attach great importance to training and training officers and non-commissioned officers - soldiers in the best way, surpassing the Soviet Red Army in the Warsaw Pact.
    There is a contrast with West Germany in the past, and Germany in the present. East Germany economically - if compared with "Western Standards", they are not equal to West Germany, but compared to military and defense forces, NATO considers them a dangerous adversary. The East German Armed Forces - NVA are still better trained than the current Bundeswehr. The Bundeswehr has faced difficulties in recent years because the federal defense budget cuts, weapons and equipment of the Bundeswehr are degraded and not suitable for modern warfare. Perhaps, German soldiers should blame and condemn German politicians for "eating away" of many things from them, from military supplies to infantry ammunition. Germany's military industry may be the most developed in the world, but German military contractors only know how to produce modern weapons such as Leopard 2A8 Tank, EF2000 aircraft, but most of them are sold to foreign countries. to make a profit, but no politician lobbied parliament to spend money to buy them for the Bundeswehr.
