ThanKs Nick. Your usual thorough, logical, reasoned analysis. I’ve done similar tests today on my 2021 R1250GS and haven’t had any problems at all. I don’t have the Navigator as I consider it overpriced and has less functionality than many smartphone apps (e.g. Copilot). Otherwise the setup is like yours: TFT running version 022_007_020, iPhone SE running iOS 14.6, Schuberth C4 Pro with SC1A comms running the latest version of software. The only slight difference is that my phone was powered the whole time rather than being on battery in the tank bag. The phone and hat were paired to the TFT first attempt with no problems, the connection was solid all day despite switching off three times for coffee/petrol, I used the navigation and music and it all just worked beautifully. I’m very impressed with the whole setup. I hope you get your kit fixed; it can’t be a serious flaw 🤔 Let us know how you get on, please?
Thanks for the comment. I’m contemplating doing away with the Nav and mounting the phone there as the Nav is near useless too. I have had some success this weekend. Not solidly but better in my breast pocket. I normally power the phone but I am beginning to think that they manage the power as riding a few hours connected does seriously drain the battery on the phone. The tank bag has a structure rather than just fabric so that may be a slight block. Still maintaining though this shouldn’t be this tough or intermittent for many. Glad yours works though (gritted teeth 🤣) 👍🏻
Not sure if I’m out of date with this topic but I just bought a R1250 GS exclusive 2020 and I tried the connect app today and it worked a treat and never missed a beat on a 110 mile round trip. I have an iPhone 8 with the latest iOS of 15.5.
Nick, thank you for reporting these differences and challenges you are experiencing. I have experienced the same challenges with the disconnecting as well. Another issue I am experiencing is the displayed speed limit for the given road is sometimes not accurate.
Thanks for the comment. What set up do you have and where is the phone sited? I get that often too, it's not inaccurate it is 'lagging'. If you wait long enough it catches up. Next time it happens, think back where you were and you'll realise the speed you are getting was a road two miles back. That's another issue I forgot to mention
Fascinating video and 18 months is far too long surely for BMW to have put this issue right. There's a bit of me that wishes TOM TOM had been installed within the TFT so that a navigation function that we've come to depend on (and arguably more important/safe than using media/phone) works reliably and independently of phone type, software, hardware, tft proximity, data use (on RT), handlebar vibration, battery etc etc. While I've long had a love/hate relationship with my Nav 6, it's plumbed in system remains reliable despite it's quirks in this brave new world!
Funny Kevin. I’ve grown to hate my Nav 6. If the screen isn’t spinning wildly it can’t seem to do a simple take me here without taking you somewhere stupid and conversely not take me via somewhere when I’ve set a waypoint 🤣 I like it for telemetry or on map view to show me severity of upcoming corners 👍🏻
I had issues hearing music. It would play on the TFT, but no sound to the hat. Everything was connected and worked fine otherwise. After 1/2 a day of hair pulling frustration, (we could look like brothers), I found your vid on set-up. Thank you thank you. I just came in from the garage after everything was working perfectly. Now let’s see if it will hold. 2021 GS, Sena Neo2, iPhone 11. This is tougher than riding the bike through SoCal traffic.
Hi Mike. Glad you have progress and it shouldn’t be this tough. Unfortunately there’s few knowledgeable (or who could care about the tech) at the dealers. Many riders know more than them on the subject. Ride safe in that traffic though 👍🏻
Considering the price of the sat nav you expect better from bmw and nick I am still looking forward to seeing your tour of England last year thanks tony💥💥
Very good content Nick. Very interesting and certainly gives one food for thought as to how BMW are going to fix this problem, considering the marketing hype surrounding this great tech for their machines. You pay a lot of hard earned money for these bikes, and there is an expectation that this technology will actually work, regardless of the type of phone you use! Hope they fix the problem soon mate.
Hi Brian. Certainly you should use no power saving mode as it will allow the app to go to sleep and on the iPhone (and most probably android) shuts down background processes and refresh too 👍🏻
Thank you for sharing information. I have the 1250RS with SW-update from last october. Never got a connection problem with Android (S8/S10) but what I experience is that I sometimes loose connection of the helmet to the bike when starting a ride. I then have to reconnect it manually. It is never while riding. It is after a fuel stop or at the start of a new ride over night or after some days. After the update in october I had one time that my rider’s helmet was connected as passenger helmet when starting a ride (I never paired a passenger helmet). But your Apple problems are much more critical then mine.
Hi Danny. When I was using the Android I did notice a significant delay (over iphone) in actually connecting at all (sometimes 2 minutes), so is it possible you are presuming it's not going to connect? Over the years that's an area that for me has become more reliable (and I am better at resetting), but for sure it's fingers-crossed after fuel stops sometimes
Hi Nick, I am new to this so sorry if this is a stupid question, I have just bought a 2021 gsa with the nav6, but what you are talking about is the navigation on the connect app arnt you? nothing to do with the nav6. is the connect app nav better than the nav6 otherwise wouldn't you just use the nav6? I connected my sena and i phone 6s the way you suggested and all works well appart from the volume level on the nav6 comes through way louder than the music level on the phone and scares the shit out of me when it happens, when i adjust the volume down to suit nav6 the music is too low, do you have this problem or dont you use your nav6 for voice directions?
Can you believe I have issues with the Nav 6 too but that’s another story. I tend to use it for telemetry from the bike and to see sharpness of road ahead rather than navigate. I am totally referring to the Connected App and the navigation on the TFT which would be plenty for me rather than the Nav 6. The volume on the Nav is tricky. You can only adjust the volume when the channel is open so for example if you are playing Spotify via the TFT or receiving phone calls then the volume must be adjust when you are on a call, or listening to music (they are separate). Same with the Nav. You have to adjust the volume while the alert is operating which is far trickier as the announcements are short and the adjustment is on the headset 👍🏻
Thanks, Nick for this video. This has been driving me bonkers. I did email Motorrad support and had an email from Stephen who said they were having problems with the "IOS Bluetooth protocol" and that they were talking to Apple about it. That was a year ago and I'm still having the same issues as you. Cheers, Mark
Hi Mark. They keep claiming it works but it’s certainly flaky at best with my setup as in the video and not something that can be relied upon. The phone and media work fine now but the connected app’s navigation not. They’ve moved focus to the 10.25 screen it seems on the RT and K1600 so expect that to be the next upgrade on the GS soon
Excellent video! You fixed my issue. I deleted the Connected app and now I can go back to making phone calls on the road. I was wondering what went wrong! I have a gps VI so the app was not necessary, it just added to Bluetooth clutter.
Hey Nick, great content as usual. I use a Oneplus 8T connected to my 1250GSA and as you pointed out with Android I have also had no issues with connectivity. I however use Tidal rather than Spotify due to the much higher HiFi quality and whilst there are the limited functions on the TFT screen I do see the album graphics just for your info. Great channel Nick, I have made many buying decisions based on your content and you have never steered me wrong! Many thanks!!!
Cheers John. Any additional info is always welcome. I think the only reason the iPhone has richer menus is to mimic the Apple Music menus as mine are there but all that's in them as content are the few tracks I have on Apple Music. Ride Safe
Hi Nick, great video as always. I have a 2019 1250GSA, latest TFT firmware and latest iOS version. I've always found the whole process of keeping the TFT, iPhone and headset connected and working a nightmare. It's so frustrating that I gave up in the end. I sold the Nav 6 and in it's place have fitted a wireless charger/holder for the iPhone. I find the iOS Tomtom app MUCH better than the Nav6. The TFT is now completely disconnected. Just the iPhone and headset are connected and work flawlessly, you can even use Siri to make calls, read messages, play audio and switch between apps.
Yep. Great setup. I’m ‘THAT’ close. I like the Nav 6 though for telemetry and accurate speed etc (£600 for that!!!!) and I am so loathed to put any more distractions on the handlebars. If it just worked 🤣👍🏻
Hi Nick, great video but more than that a big thank you for all your past productions which have helped enormously as I transit from an 18 K16 GTL to the 21 GSA. I have Android via a Samsung S21 Ultra which sort of works with the GSA but often fails to connect sound wise for turn by turn directions after a stop for example. I'm working on that and if there are any suggestions from you or other subscribers they would be most welcome. Anyway apart from that all is going very well with the GSA which though massively different to the K will I think surpass its mile munching capabilities. I'm one of those nuts who enjoys Iron Butt rides. Stay safe and well. Best regards, Tony
Glad it’s all helped. I do feel the android takes a really long time to connect but not sure why turn by turn wouldn’t work alone. Does media and phone still work as they should use that connection. Interesting swap from the K16 to the GSA. Did you consider the RT? As I get older the RT appeals more each day 🤣 Ride safe 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Hi Nick, I rode the RT for a while 3 years + ago as part of the K16 GTL buying decision and thought the K won that one hands down. Then I rode the GSA in April and loved it so much I ordered one there and then. So far the decisions been a good one. I just need to sort out the GSA's seat and I think I'm done save maybe some Denali Lights......see and be seen is your motto and mine as well, but the GSA TE stock lights do a fairly good job. My issue with any bike is my size. I'm 6'5" and not skinny either ;-) so I need a bike with some scope in the cockpit. The GSA has that. Am off to the Gross Glockner on Monday from my home in Vienna for a quick there and back (3 days). The weather here is perfect which is unusual for the GG, it can be closed well into July because of snow. Should be fun there is still a lot of snow up there judging by the Webcams on the GG web site. As an aside I also bought the Bumot set of luggage. Excellent decision, prompted to a greater extent by your excellent review. Anyway must dash.....lunch is calling :-)
I used the app connected to TFT for 1 day, tried turn by turn and hated it so I deleted the app. However I really don't use many of the features with the TFT and NAV VI setup (to their full potential). Example: I just use the NAV VI for situational awareness (viewing the screen) and don't trip plan with it. I actually have only ever plugged in an address to it once just to try it out. I do have a Cardo Packtalk Slim that I use for bike to bike comms (I don't take calls or listen to music typically). Good vid however, thanks for putting it up.
That’s what I want to use the Nav 6 for (telemetrics and ‘how tight is that upcoming bend’!) as it’s useless IMO for navigating 🤣 I don’t mind the Nav in the TFT for directions but you can trust it. Music, bike and walking is the only place I listen. Phone? “Can you open the gates dear I’m at the end of the Avenue” 🤣👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK that's perfect. Thoughts on the new integrated Nav into the TFT? I shot a vid about my thoughts but want to wait a bit to re-shoot and give more detail. IMO, I'd rather have the stacked setup with dedicated NAV / TFT for a few reasons vs the integrated. It's the same reason I like having the gauges on my truck in front of me and the Nav setup on a separate screen on the dash...
Morning Nick this is interesting as I have an BMW R1250RS (2020) and using the iPhone initially I had the same issues as you are having with the iPhone, and raised a support request to the BMW guys behind the APP (via the feedback option in the app its self) They suggested I upgraded my firmware of my bike which my local dealer did for me and the other piese of advice the said was to "Make sure within the App on the iphone the Location is set to Always" after doing this back in August last year I have found my connected and and sybch to my dash to work as I would expect it all the time. I ride generally with the iphone in my jacket pocket or tank bag if I need to charge it.
Hi Paul. Yes, same feedback as I've had (and several other things, like battery saver off). I do feel they are trying to use a low power mode that means the range is VERY short on the BT channel. This is not really necessary as I can always have it on charge, either in the tank bag or via a power bank in my pocket.
Hi Nick, if you remember I had a lot of issues which I noted on your previous video. Since upgrading bike software to the current 020 version and having the 3.1.1 Connected app version on my S9 all is working well.
Thanks for this video Nick. Like you, I have an iPhone, with the latest iOS softeware. Unlike you however, my dealer isn't happy to update my TFT FOC, so it's about 8 months out of date. Must admit I don't use the TFT nav function, as I have the Nav 5 if I need to get anywhere specifically. I therefore didn't have any issues at all until out of a sense of curiosity I decided to connect to have a look. Immediately I did that, my previously stable media connection started suffering gremlins and needed disconnecting/reconnecting frequently. Having watched this, and made what may be a tenuous and purely conincidental link, I have deleted the Connect app, and look forward to a stable experience again. A great idea, just needs sorting.
I feel that we endure too much tek and info while riding our motorcycle, I also ride a GS and never have phone on or music, I prefer to ride without more distraction than we already have out on the roads, the tek is there if I need it but for me it is very rarely competing with my pleasure of riding my motorcycle , stay safe.
I sort of agree Derek, but I never listen to music except on my bike so it’s sort of the accompaniment to it. That said, if it worked 1st time, every time it wouldn’t be a distraction and we could re-run those surprise days when the route was just 👌🏻 by simply recalling it from the app 👍🏻
You are not alone, the TFT on the 21 RT is essentially the same software and demonstrating the same issues only worse. On the GS TFT you loose directions, on the 21 RT you loose directions and the Maps. Bearing in mind the touring aspirations of the RT and the attempt to put Maps into it the result is something barely working. On the RT you are supposed to leave your phone in the bikes charging pocket, because of the battery drain when using maps, the pocket has no vibration damping and its simply a pain putting it in and taking it out. I now use a dedicated bike phone which is a Galaxy S10 and it works unless you get an update and the operating system changes things. All of these phones are designed to save battery and there are many, many switches required to be set to keep the app working. BMW advised me to set the phone up using the switches on the dontkillmyapp website. Its daunting.
Hi David. It is. I fear they have the power use of the app throttled right down anyhow, which I think is some of my problem as many with unit 'in open' are not having such issues. What confuses me is why? I pretty well always have my phone on charge, either in the tank bag connected to the cockpit socket or to a power bank, so battery drain doesn't really concern me. It's disappointing with the RT as that has *real* potential to do away with separate systems. In my understanding it's slightly different in that the app uses WiFi technology rather than Bluetooth and that by design if you are on a phone call the 'rich' maps should drop to 'turn-by-turn' ones but I have heard a few are losing them all together and many are not getting full functionality back. I love the new RT so I hope for all models that will follow this TFT design they get that right soon. Ride safe.
@@nickhodgeUK The 21 RT uses both bluetooth and Wi-Fi direct. Bluetooth gives us music, phone and directions. Wi-Fi is used to display maps. The Bluetooth is stable the Wi-Fi not and that is on a Samsung Galaxy S10. All in all a mess.
Hi Nick, you don't need to borrow another iPhone. It is a sad connecting issue and I can confirm the same or similar a experience. I love your little Brexit remark as we (CH) are also not a member of the club. Rgds Markus
Thanks Nick. I am experiencing the same thing as you with the exception that the Media disconnects also. I have the iPhone 12 Pro, so maybe the newer phone is less reliable. Going in for the TFT update next week and hope for the best but expect no improvement. I agree it is very frustrating when you spend this much money and you expect it to work without issues and it is far from it.
Steve. Check out my other connection video and make sure your Nav is set up with media and phone unchecked. That’s what normally causes Media to disconnect from TFT. Here’s another thing today. Apple have released iOS 14.6 which lists BT improvements but also fixes a bug where connections may ‘switch’ after or during a phone call. Here’s hoping 🤞🏻
I’d say also Steve. I delete all pairings (phone, Nav 6 and lid) and reset TFT fully after updates like this iOS one in case any setting saved in the connection carries a problem 👍🏻
Hi Nick, superb clear video as always. After I followed your original set up guide the connected app works for approx 90% of the journeys. When it works it records the whole trip, not experienced it dropping out during a ride. However I have found that although the TFT may indicate the app is connected, on 10% of the rides it does not show it as recorded in the app. I emailed BMW in January and they advised me to update to latest IOS leave phone on and keep in close to TFT, all things I had already done. I have since responded twice to them but so far no further feedback. I have just changed this week from an iPhone 7 to an iPhone 12, first ride on Tuesday so will be interesting to see what changes that makes. I am sure there will be some ! Thankfully the bike is awesome but at these prices it is very disappointing.
I love my bike still but it should just work. It does on Android. I suggested to them recently they should ‘fess up and say ‘not compatible with iOS’ 👍🏻
Thanks for the comment, yours is a slightly different issue as the Nav on the 2021 RT is WiFi I believe? I think they will overcome that issue. I am hoping for you as I hope the bigger screen and dropped separate nav is the way the GS(A) will go. Ride safe, that's a great bike
Hi Nick, I took delivery of a R1250 GSA a couple of weeks ago so watched this with interest. I have 022_007_020 installed on my TFT and use an iPhone11 running IOS 14.4.2. I've not experienced any problems recording my rides on the BMW connected App, in fact yesterday it successfully recorded a ~120 mile ride around the Peak District. I've not used the TFT turn by turn navigation feature as like you I have the navigator VI but having watched your video I think I'll give it a try.
I think mine’s getting worse. I’ve reset everything so many times in hope but the Android works so well it has to be iOS. BMW do admit they have the issue but mine is getting worse damn it as I’d prefer the Nav on the TFT over the 6
I agree with your observations about N Oxford (Woolaston Northampton too ) . Beautifully expressed. I agree with your conclusions and concerns. Well done for exploring the iOS/Android differences. (Frustrating heh?) warmest regards
i BELIEVE i HAVE FOLLOWED THE VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS CORRECTLY. I AM USING THE the TFT ON THE 2020 BMW F900XR WITHR NAV6, SENA ST1, and iPhone XR WITH IOS15.5. i HAVE TAKEN THE BIKE TO THE BMW DEALER TO HAVE THE LATEST F900XR TFT FIRMWARE INSTALLED. ALL WORKS WELL ACCEPT THAT I CANNOT GET THE GPS ROUTING INSTRUCTIOND TO COME THROUGH THE SENA. AS SOON AS THE HELMET AND PHONE ICONS APPEAR ON THE TFT, THE GPS ROUTING INSTRUCTIONS STOP IMMEDIATELY. I HAVE REPEATED THE CONNECTIONS PROCEDURE MULTIPLE TIMES BUT ALWAYS THE SAME RESULT.
Hi Dan. Tough to know every combination and don’t know if your bike model is different but you could try this if your Sena allows. Delete the pairing on Nav 6 and headset and re-pair using GPS pairing. This allows the instructions but is not so rich in features as mobile phone 2 for example. Also be sure you have NO phone to headset direct pairing and that the volume is up on the Nav 6 pairing. This is quite tricky as it can only be done when the Nav 6 is actually saying commands. I generally start a route which tends to be quite a long announcement 👍🏻
Great review and conclusion, Nick I had the same issue with the disconnected iphone SE2 when I worn it in my breast bag or in the tank bag. Since it's mounted on the handlebar with a SP-Connect mount, the mobile is closer to the TFT and once I started everything up in the right order, the connection remains stable. I am somehow under the impression that these issues could also belong to the keyless system which might interfere with Apple's bluetooth connectivity. I have a 900XR. Best regards from CH
Hi Doug. Can I ask what phone and where it’s mounted? I suspect it’ll be older than the 11 and on the handlebars? It’s tough to boil it down but most having success are older phones mounted near TFT. If it works though, don’t change anything!! 👍🏻
Hi Nick thank you for all the great videos, I have had some info from BMW regarding this issue, I should mention I took delivery of a brand new 1250 GSA rallye on the 1st of March and had lots of connectivity issues with the Iphone so I have been ringing and mailing BMW and this is what I have received .... (There is a new software available for the Connectivity/TFT display (vehicle software) since a few days which will improve the stability of Bluetooth connections (especially iOS). Please refer to you mentoring BMW Motorrad dealer. He will be able to update the software to the new version 022.008.020. A feedback if the problem persists after the update would be very helpful for us. Thank you in advance!) So my bike has gone in today to have the update installed over night so WATCH this space...........
Good to know Andy. I am in touch with the app developers and they said a TFT update in the February/March timeframe should fix it, so be good to know if it dies and I’ll do an update 👍🏻
I have a late 2021 BMW 1250 and I use an iPhone 11 with the latest iOS 15.5 update and it works fine with the BMW Connected app. The only thing it doesn't do is synchronize the contacts to view them in TFT. I contacted BMW online support and they told me to go to the dealer to install the latest update which I haven't done yet.
Duarte. If you have in excess of 5,000 contacts it won’t sync but that’s a lot of contacts!! I don’t think the latest update will help but get it done anyhow. Sometimes it’s very slow to load them. What I would do is delete the pairing on your phone for the TFT. Reset the TFT via settings (that deletes the pairings on the TFT. And re-pair being sure to accept the permission to share contacts 👍🏻
Hi Nick nice video demonstrating the issue . I ride a F850 GS ADV. And have the same setup iPhone X (14.5.1 OS) . My connected app does not drop like in this video and I have had it connected for over 3 hour rides . However, sometimes my iPhone and helmet Bluetooth connection resets and I have to reconnect the phone / helmet again . Once it connects it stays connected well during rides . Not sure if software etc differs but the tft and menus sure do look the same . Let us know if BMW does have a firmware fix in future 👍
I sure will. You’re the 2nd commenter with a smaller GS with no issue so maybe there’s a difference but you think they’d get the larger seller right? Ride safe 👍🏻
Hi Nick, another great video. I just fitted that tft anti theft bracket thanks to you. I do mention you again on my latest vid on my channel :-). Servicing my GSA.. I have had conection issues ever since I got my bike, but different issues. I can't connect a helmet until that bluetooth icon stops flashing. It took me ages to work that out. If that icon is flashing I have no chance of connecting my sena. I used to have Iphones for years, but got fed up of Itunes. I went to hospital & had the Apple removed from my ass. I went Android. My S9 was great but the mic died. I have an S20 now which is not a great phone. I did wonder if I could sway back to Iphone. You have answered that for me. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the comment. I was out yesterday and I’m starting to get success but inky in very certain circumstances. I’ll release an update soon maybe. That is for the mentions too 👍🏻
Hi Nick, I too have an iPhone 11 Pro running 14.4.2. As yet it works just fine with the connected app, I don't however open the app on on the phone before any ride. It has "lost" connection once for part of a ride but overall I am happy with Connected. The bike's firmware was updated in January - GS 1250 2019.
It's so weirdly sporadic and definitely iPhone specific as no one has so far said Android has issue. BMW themselves admit the issue but it seems to affect different people in different ways. I'd say if yours works, don't change a thing!!
Hi Nick, superb video. I am just discovering this with my new 2022 S1000XR. iPhone 11 for me. Do you know if this issue still exists if you use the BMW Connected Ride Cradle? As I understand if using the cradle, the phone is Bluetooth’d to the cradle and not the tft. Just wondering as I am now considering buying the bmw cradle, but also terrified of the vibrations killing my iPhone camera as a non bmw mount did 😞
I’ve investigated the cradle but it’s not really a solution for the connection issues although it is vibration damped (and so it should at £185!! As I understand it the BT allows use of the wheel in the app on the phone and the phone still need to be connected to the TFT to use the Nav on the TFT but with phone mounted you can just use the app directly I suppose. I’d say it’s certainly preferred to the Nav 6. Good luck 🤞🏻
It may not be iPhone’s only. On Sunday I had the same experience on Sunday with my new Samsung A52. Have never experienced it with m old Samsung S8. Well diagnosed.
Hi Nick, Just to put a spanner in the works , I have a 2021 R1250GSA and a Iphone 12 pro and have found the bmw nav app 100% reliable but I have only used it recently for recording my trips. I must admit I dont have the connection too my helmet yet ( That will be coming soon ) but I thought I'd let you know. If you want the various software versions please let me know. PS . I think I met you in December at Loomies , I was riding a z1000sx at the time. Any way I live in Basingstoke so if you ever want to meet up then feel free to give me a shout.
Hi Stephen. Thanks for the comment. Do you mount it on handlebars or do you have Nav 6 installed? We should have a channel ride out soon. There’s quite a few locals I think 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Hi Nick, I have a Nav 6 installed and I just put the phone in my jacket pocket and I dont leave it live in the app if you know what I mean. I havnt changed any of the apps settings as you suggested either.
@@stephenfisher1622 well certainly don’t change anything but all those settings are BMW advised. I’m wondering more if it’s hardware specific as you’re the second with an iPhone 12 that’s working. I get a new one at next launch (September) 👍🏻
hi nick i have the 2018 gs te, TFT firmware 022/005/041, i use iphone 11pro 14.5.1 software and up to date ‘connected app’ 3.0.2 and it very rarely drops the connection on the connected app and can very rarely and it is rare have gremlins within media and phone. done about 120 miles today, recorded 4 ‘rides’ in the ‘connected app’ without any issues.. but i admit i now shutdown and restart iphone before each weekend ride and i ALSO ‘delete all connections’ in the TFT and then reconnect as requested.. once that’s done on a friday morning i’m generally good all weekend. i keep my iphone in my right leg pocket on normal screen settings, ie after 30 seconds the phone goes into standby (blank screen) i’m happy so far
Hi Bazz wish I could find a common theme. I wonder if the TFT updates (as yours is a few back) is trying to make it better but making it worse??? Frustrating 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK probably a good idea as you said in your video to try another couple of iphones? or deleting the ‘connected’ app from your 11pro and then downloading it again?
Hi Nick another great informative video as usual. i have a 2020 1250gsa Rallye and iPhone 12 Pro Max and Sena 50s on my GS helmet and a SRL on shoei notetec 2. Nav 6 on the bike too. Same issues as you, get it all set up and it works fine then it drops out and you have to almost delete the connections again and then re connect. Nightmare. I also had the TFT updated last month to see if that helped but still the same issues. BMW need to up their game. Keep up the great work..
I’m guessing your phone is in a pocket or tank bag. It seems most have luck if they mount the phone on handlebars or in place of SatNav. I’m trying to rule out whatever I can. I managed a two-way ride of nearly 100 miles last week with it in a breast pocket connected but the battery on my iPhone 11 Pro had 10% battery left so I wonder if they have the BT power turned right down to save the battery. That’s not a concern as I can charge on the go, just decided not to on that day as it was near full when I left. I’m just so loathed to have another distraction on my handlebars 👍🏻
I'm wondering why you would want to connect to the connected app anyway? The satnav function is not very good with your phone doing a much better job, or indeed the Nav 6 on the cradle. I have a 2021 1250 GSA and use 2 iPhones. An iPhone 8+ as SatNav using a cradle adapter and an iPhone 11 Pro as my everyday phone. Neither is connected to the TFT and connect through the Cardo headset, which again isn't connected to the TFT and I never have an issue, music and calls through the Cardo from my iPhone 11 Pro and SatNav from the waterproof large-screen iPhone 8+ in the Nav cradle. All the TFT does is what it was designed for, telling me how fast I'm going and how much fuel I have left. It all works flawlessly :)
Ah now there’s a thing Martin. It doesn’t show the correct speed but that’s the same with most speedos 🤣. I have my Nav6 on telemetry to get the correct speed and various other things I find useful. I really don’t want another thing on my handlebars and I guess my point is that it should work. Turn-by-turn is plenty for me I don’t need to see a colour map and stuff. All the rest, phone, media and stuff is ok. Ride safe 👍🏻
Great viewing Nick and fantastic attention to detail... so frustrating for everyone with ios connectivity problems. I have a 2020 S1000XR and Samsung S21 Ultra and its flawless 👌.
Hi Adrian. Thanks for the comment. I have a QRR (Quick Ride Review) to edit on the 2020 XR. I rode it when the TFT was upgraded, boy that thing just wants to go. Not for me as I found it too revvy, but it hits about 5k and goes off like something possessed! Ride safe
@@nickhodgeUK Will very much look forward to your views on the XR.. A GS was very much my intention late 2020 but I was swayed at the last minute by that power band up top...
Have you had any issues with when you are connected to a group intercom the music goes mute? Done the same connection procedure as you by the way on my R1250GS with, Sena 20 Evo, mobile cradle and a android phone. I can see the song is playing on the TFT screen and I can pause it and start it again but the music does not come through the speakers in to the helmet. If I leave the group intercom, I then can control my music via the TFT and hear it again. Would be nice to acually have both as it did work when I don`t connect to the TFT sceen and only pair the Sena to the phone. Thanks for the video!
Mmmmm not sure. To be honest group intercom is a pain (crackles and pops with greater than two connections) and if you’re doing this through the Sena app then you will have issue as there is a connection between phone and helmet. If you are just linking the intercoms through ‘intercom pairing’ on the helmet then try adjusting the sensitivity on the intercom. This is the sensitivity at which the microphone channel will be closed on the intercom and allow the media to be heard. Otherwise the intercom mic remains open and mutes the audio
Hi Nick, I can't really help in regards to your experience and I certainly can't point a finger and say there's something you're doing that's wrong, but my experience has been totally the opposite of yours (mostly). I haven't tested with Android other than a brief test but I test software for a living so this is a subject I've been pretty keen on since I got my 2019 1250GSA back in December 2019. I've cover over 5000 miles since buying the bike, all with the Connected app running. Most of those miles have been with my previous iPhone 11 Pro Max but more recently my iPhone 12 Pro Max. I won't say I've had no disconnections as that would be a lie but they have been very few and far between. It HAS happened to me, but it's been very rare. I'm a beta tester for the Connected app so I've been back and forth testing the App Store version and the beta's and generally speaking the connection is stable. My TFT is running the same version of the software as yours and I have tested with a ton of different iOS versions. Currently running iOS 14.7 Beta and the Connected app is behaving mostly brilliantly. I'll have a think if I can come up with any theories but my experience of using the Connected app on iOS mirrors your experience using Android. If you can get yourself on the Beta program it's worth it to push your issue home, the beta versions allow you to enable debugging mode and geenrate logs files which you can then submit along with a bug. All the best.
Thanks Paul. It's been stable until the latest versions of iOS (after 13.2). It's almost like they're using a low-power mode as anecdotally people with it mounted on handlebars or Nav 6 position fair best. That's not necessary as battery power, either in the tank bag or in pocket via a power bank would be preferable to this. This bike and the combination with iPhone 11 Pro (as it may be that phone model) is, as you can see useless. I get frustrated as I've offered services (I am very technical and develop software) but it takes about 3 weeks to get a reply and then it's the same old 'fob-off'. Reset this, reboot that, delete pairings, have location set to 'always', etc. etc. They always mention they have an issue with iPhone but 'are working with Apple'. This has gone on for nearly 18 months and about 4 or 5 emails, until they go silent for a bit. I can evidence Android works, but my experience with iOS is poor. I also see from the comments some are not having ssue, but as you can see, there's no more I can do that what is being done and it's still an issue. BT is a mature tech and I'm surprised there is any kind of struggle. However, we wait some more. Thanks again for the comment.
@@nickhodgeUK No worries Nick and I totally get your frustration. I had to threaten to take BMW to court to get them to take my Bluetooth issue seriously which was the fact it was forgetting it’s pairings. Also I work in software Dev too as a tester so this sort of thing frustrates me. I too was told about the “issue since 13.2” by BMW but the software version we both have now was allegedly to fix the iOS core problems of pairings being forgotten which I’m pleased to say for me at least it has. Since I’ve been beta testing the Connected app (About 6 months) I’ve raised just over 80 bugs with the app so it’s clearly undergoing a lot of change. I used my iPhone 11 Pro Max with my GS last August for 8 days around the Alps and it only failed to record the route once so it frustrates me why peoples experience is so inconsistent. Some people have nothing but issues with Android and vice versa. Either way BMW need to do something to restore faith especially as I suspect the next GS will have the dash from the new RT or similar. I’ve told them straight I couldn’t use the Connected app as my primary navigation device but they seem more keen on pushing new features rather than stabilising the current feature set. I could go on but as you work in development you know where I’m coming from haha
The Connected app can fail to relaunch on occasion during stop start trips but haven’t had it drop out around town. Perhaps it’s related to speed or network coverage. Was hoping to rely on this as a backup to the unreliable Nav VI whilst touring!
Hi Arb. That’s exactly me. The Nav 6 is a useless piece of junk too complicated for its own good. I prefer that on telemetry (as on video) and would prefer TFT for Nav but it’s far too flaky 👍🏻
@@mikeball5883 well that’s slightly encouraging. They admit to a small fault but as you can see on mine it’s not small. Is you phone handlebar mounted??
Again....a detailed video, Nick!!! Im about to pull the trigger on either a '22 r1250rt or r1250gsa....do you suppose the 2022 have these issues ironed out????
Hi Fred. The GS (with my specific configuration as some are reporting ok but iPhone is definitely an issue) is NOT fixed but I am told by the app team that there is a TFT software update in the Feb/Mar time frame to address the issues. My friend has a new RT and their issue is different. The coloured map on that machine uses an in bike WiFi network (not internet related) while music and such still use Bluetooth. The idea is if a phone call comes in the WiFi drops and the mapping reverts to Bluetooth and the basic turn-by-turn on the GS. That seems to work but when the call is finished it seems not to return to the full colour screen WiFi function. I would think, as this is the go-forward solution (K1600 now has this and I fully expect next GS versions to have it too), I’m sure they will put resource into the RT version to correct that issue. Both seem slightly better with Android and my mate bought a cheap 2nd phone and sim for the RT as a bike-specific phone and that seems to be fine (phone calls he takes on his iPhone connected to his headset directly). Hope all this helps? 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK thanks mate! There's always plan B.....scrap the bmw for now and get in line for a 2022 Triumph Explorer....and wait for BMW to hopefully just pay Google for their maps when they put a proper tft on the gsa in 2023!!!!🤞🤞🤞🤞
@@fredzuccarelli I could come back in that Fred. The motorcycle is without doubt the best in class no matter that failing. Also, what BMW are trying to do (which IS admirable) is build a Nav system that offers what motorcyclists want. Operation with gloves, choice of routes, including variations of twisty. If you’re happy with Google maps then don’t buy the Nav 6. Buy BMW’s new connected cradle that sits in its place and use their app or any other nav app. That DOES work 👍🏻
Hi Nick, great to see an objective review made in a very clear and informative way - well done! A quick question; have any subsequent OS updates improved the connectivity with iPhones?
Rupert. I rode a new GS the other day and that had a TFT software version of 023_011_060 and my setup worked fine with that for a couple of 70 mile rides so maybe they improved it 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK thanks for the speedy reply, Nick. I pick up my new R1250GS tomorrow and had ordered a connectedride cradle (rather than a Nav6) to go with it, so your reply is timely too! Many thanks indeed and keep up the great work on your channel.
@@nickhodgeUK A quick update: The connectedride cradle arrived but it's a disappointment. Despite specifying my iPhone 14 Pro model to the dealership, it does not fit the cradle. The basic dimensions of the 14 Pro 'just fit', but the camera lenses protrude too much and prevent the cradle clamps from holding the phone securely. Also, there's no way the cradle will hold the iPhone fitted with a case. My other iPhone is an SE and that doesn't fit either (the cradle clamp does grip the SE securely, but the clamps continuously press the volume down button and/or the off button). So, regardless of how well the device connectivity works, if the cradle won't hold my iPhone, it's no good to me. I've returned the cradle and fitted a Black Box Embedded WunderLinq V2, which seems to work fine. Better still, it gives me access to all of the other apps installed on my phone, such as the Map apps (Apple & Google) and phone apps.
@@RupertGranville that’s disappointing but not unusual. The K1600 I now have has the phone cubby at the front. That’s tight with a 13 pro and you have to be careful not to turn it off with the clamp. Hopefully you can get connection with the TFT though. Like to look if the Linq unit too. Just be careful of vibration as the cameras on newer iPhones are very susceptible to vibration 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK I'll post some feedback on the Linq when I have a few more miles with it under my belt. Before I bought the Quadlock anti-vibration device, I had an iPhone 13Pro mounted directly to an R1200RS which killed the camera. 1 Year/& 16,000 more miles with the anti-vibration device fitted and no dramas at all. Definately worth the pennies.
According to my local BMW dealer, when I mentioned this issue, they are expecting a fix from BMW in February 2022 ... and in the meantime have been told not to do any software updates without specific authorisation from BMW!
Hi Michael. That is correct. They tried to update mine and it raises a fault in the SOS system that then requires a part. That was fitted yesterday but hasn’t obviously fixed the overall issue. I hope it gets sorted for Feb/Mar as the app developers have said but it’s been two years so far so I’m not holding my breath
Thank you kindly for this information. I just purchased the 1250 GSA and am awaiting delivery. Question... Why is there a GPS cradle installed on these bikes as an option when the main TFT has navigation on it? Is it for people who want to have a dedicated screen just for navigation? If I were to get the Navigator or other dedicated garmin devices would those devices be connected to my helmet and phone as well? Very confusing.
Hi Stan. I agree it’s confusing. The TFT navigation is just turn-by-turn. That is there is no map. Just an arrow pops up to say left or right, roundabout exit number (or straight on of course). This is run not from the TFT but from the connected app on your phone. If you have android that should work ok but if you have an Apple phone, with certain models the connection is very flaky, although a TFT software update in Jan/Feb is hoping to fix this, although we’ve been hoping since Sept 2019!!! The Nav 6 is a full blown map satellite navigation system. In my opinion it’s probably too complicated. Sometimes it depends what you need. I spent most of a trip to France using Google maps. Answering you specific question, you phone and headset will play music, answer phone and navigate as I’ve explained, all through the TFT. You can connect the Nav 6 to the headset but need to connect it carefully or it will disconnect features from the TFT. I have another video in this. For me, if I were buying a GS now I would use the new BMW connected cradle that sits in the NAV preparation cradle and allows you to use the whizzy wheel for all functions in the phone. Hope it’s not too complicated but the other video should help explain connections. Good luck. You’ll love the bike 👍🏻
I gave up on the app. Just use the Nav VI now. It or the Nav V are all you need if not bothered about the “nice to haves”. TFT is more trouble than its worth too, in mho anyway. Would far rather have the last generation RT display and clocks. Dinosaur? Perhaps, but bike info SHOULD be simple, reliable and dependable. There’s more than enough distractions when riding taxing concentration that these things are not a great idea on a bike.
@@benkelly2190 I love it but it is surprisingly different. Nowhere near as agile, particularly with tanks full but weather protection much better. I did the vid on the new GS recently and it felt small when I got on. In fact I asked if it was lowered 🤣. If anything the GSA at 6ft 1in is as tall as I’d want it with suspension on auto. It’s the first bike when in constant stop-start traffic I dial the preload to ‘Min’ so I’ve got both feet firmly down 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK that’s interesting and a great insight, as I’m considering a swap up! I’ll have a try on one but, feel the GS is probably a better option for me! Most useful mate. Cheers👍🏻
Very interesting and comprehensive video, Nick. My experience is different. I have an older iPhone 7 (14.5.1), connected app (3.0.2) and an older TFT version (021_004_041). I always have the connected app running on my phone and I have always ensured I have the maps downloaded in my phone (within the app). My connection between app and TFT NEVER drops. It records each and every ride from start to finish and always shows me the speed limit square. Strange.
Hi Richard. Thanks for the two replies. I too usually have it in jacket or trouser pocket, but BMW try and side-step by suggesting other areas, but short of taping it to the TFT it couldn't be much closer. Some iPhone 11 users seem OK but I seem to see a bit of a trend toward failure in iphone 11s.???
just a thought - Bluetooth can be notoriously flakey and susceptible to interference. Do you think the metal anti-theft guard is interfering or weakening the Bluetooth signal or blocking the Bluetooth antenna on the TFT? Maybethe android phone has a better/stronger implementation but maybe worth a try without the metal screens on the TFT and satnav. Personally, I've not had any problems on my 1200GS TE Exclusive with TFT screen for the connected app. Keep up the great video content - very thorough and varied! :-)
Hi Mike. It goes back way before the brace. There is an issue that BMW admit to after iOS 13.2 but it is something even through the comments on this it is difficult to pin down. I thought those with success had the phone on the handlebars but I’ve reluctantly moved mine there and still no improvement. It does however seem to be later iPhone versions (>iPhoneX). Ride safe 👍🏻
Have you been in touch with Highland Rider? Seems many riders are having the same problems. Apparently BMW will supply an update in September to sort out the many different problems riders have been having.
Ah. Just looked and his issues are with the RT 2021. Those are different. The RT uses bike specific WiFi for map display and BT while on the phone. I hope the release helps fix all the issues but I’m now not so sure?? 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Different bikes but similar problems. What I can't understand is why you need the phone to be open while using the GPS. as one vlogger explained. What happens if your in the middle of the Gobi Desert or S America? With Navigators once you download the latest updates your ready to go with no worries of lost connections.
@@czerwonadupa9547 I agree you shouldn’t have to have it open but in desperation since v13.2 of iOS it has kept disconnecting so they advise to have the setting ‘always on’ rather than ‘only while using the app’ and not actually switching off the phone. The issue I see is that when it disconnects (often) the phone shuts down as it has no ‘active’ BT connection. The real issue here is there is no reliable system of the three provided, the Nav6 IMO is too complicated for it’s own good, the TFT disconnects from the ‘connected’ app and often then the connected app is still navigating and calling commands but that too disconnects randomly. I guess this is why adventurers use maps.me? 🤣👍🏻
Hi Nick. 2020 GS1250 (using km/h since i live in Denmark) and iPhone 11 Pro with iOS 14.6 and latest Connected app. I have not used the turn by turn navigation / route recording (i have a Tomtom Rider). But i have never experienced that the speed limit icon disappears. My TFT was updated about a month ago, can't remember the software version, but i can find it if you are interested.
Thanks for the comment Ole. Always interested in any snippet of information. There’s little emerging from the comments to date so TFT version would be good. Thanks 👍🏻
I ride a Can Am Spyder with BRP Go app. I’m wondering if you can change to another playlist or album while moving? My system requires me to be stopped to get the Apple Music menu. Also, how long does the phone last when it’s not connected to power? Just curious. Thanks
Hi Susie. I use Spotify but i believe the system works better with iTunes. I have one playlist but there are menus for playlist, album, artist so I’m sure you can change in the go. The connected app (which only runs the navigation) is the battery eater. If you are just playing music a fully charged good battery would last all day as it’s purely playing the music as it would normally through any headset (not through a supporting 3rd party app)
Hi Nick, GS fairly new to me but ive been out all today and been playing with various bits. Iphone 7 running 14.4.2 , no connectivity issues so far. Speed stayed indicated and even ran for about an hour using the TFT sat nav. Out tomorrow and will try the record thing.
I think your phone version (7) helps. Anecdotally newer phones seem worse. I road out today with Wednesday’s iOS update (14.6) and it was much better (in top pocket with no case) but not flawless. Hoping this stabilises??
That’s a pretty standard comment. It does so many things so well. The number of people who don’t want to like them numbers many too. Most now own them 🤣👍🏻. Ride safe
Thanks for posting these helpful vids. I have a 2021 R1250GSA 40th Anniversary on order due for delivery in a few weeks. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and have flip flopped between Android and Apple for years. I still have an iPhone Xs Pro which I can try out as well. Will stick with the Samsung for the moment and see how it goes and may try the iPhone at a later date to see how I get on with that as well. I ordered the bike with the Nav 6 unit as I was confused by the navigation provided by the TFT and the Nav 6 and didn't really know what was going on here. (I'm in Japan and struggling with the translating and understanding everything in Japanese). I ended up ordering the Nav 6 as I wanted something to fit in that blank mounting bracket. It does seem odd that BMW are giving two different ways to provide navigation. I assume at some point the Nav 6 unit will disappear completely like it has for the RT.
I think you are correct that the GS will follow the RT path with a single navigation unit. Be aware though that both the RT and the TFT Nav in the GS require the BMW Connected app to be running on the phone as that is what provides the navigation functionality. This is good as the maps can be updated easily, but it’s reliability on the GS is only good with Android handsets and some iPhones. They will get it sorted I hope. The Nav 6 is a Garmin unit and the ‘connected app’ uses TomTom for maps so I expect the Garmin deal is up with BMW. Personally I would rather use the TFT for navigation and show the telemetry from the bike in the Nav 6 as I find navigation on the Nav 6 far too complicated but one thing I know for certain…. You’ll love the bike. Ride safe 👍🏻
Great video Nick, of a complicated subject. I experienced similar conflicts with a GSA/Sena/iPhone 2 years ago. Is the matter resolved yet? My local BMW dealer tells me a new update is due this month. I was hoping to buy either a new 1250 RT or GSA (without Nav IV) and use the App and TFT to handle navigation. I would want to be able to export from Basecamp to the App - but if its not stable its all rather pointless. I'd welcome you POV?
Hi Gordon. Unfortunately not (in my experience). Neither the RT (which works differently and my friend has) or the GS are reliable. I am in touch with the app developers and it is an iPhone issue that they’ve been working with Apple in, but it seems they have to do some TFT updates to complete. This, I am told will be Feb/Mar. My TFT is up to date and still issues. Android seem to work ok? On the RT my friend uses his regular phone (Apple) connected to his headset (phone 1) for calls and a sacrificial android device connected to the bike and helmet (phone 2) so the navigation and music work from there. The RT uses an in-bike WiFi network for the colour map display they when a call is taken drops to Bluetooth and the same GS style turn by turn Nav. That seems to work mostly, but the WiFi never returns and therefore the colour maps. It’s a bit of a mess frankly but I remain hopeful for Feb/Mar 22 🤞🏻👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK with the Navigator IV being dropped from the new K Series, looks like BMW are fully committed to this system, so hopefully it'll get resolved soon Cheers - keep doing the great videos
@@gordonscott2838 indeed. Although not a volume product versions of the R18 have the 10.25in TFT for Nav too so it’s the direction of travel so they have to get it right although some people not as nice as us may take out a class action as technically they are ‘selling’ something that can be proven not fit for purpose. 👍🏻
HI Matt and Nick...i have the iphone 12 pro max as well and it drops all the same. i have the iphone connected at the Navi slot.right above the TFT. i do have navi though but i loss both the phone and media. I’ve a 2020 GSA TE Exclusive and have no problems with the BMW connected app, using navigation on the TFT. Works a dream. I’m using an iPhone 11 and ios14.5.1.App v 3.0.2 Just a thought but have you got your iPhone settings to background app refresh as well…I’ve used it for 6000 miles since Feb and had no problems at all.
Indeed Phil I have (every setting they’ve asked me to do). What version of TFT software please. It seems the last one made it worse. Interestingly iPhone just updated to 14.6 with comment on BT connections so here’s hoping 🤞🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Hi Nick. Software version is 022_007_020. I’ve had no problems since owning the bike in Feb. I had a 750GS before that and had no problems either. It’s bizarre how two bikes of the same model can be so different.
Hi Nick just got a 1250 RT 2022 and have a IPhone 12. Had a few wireless connection issues, have to remove case and make sure it’s it a certain position int the phone slot. When I play media can’t seem to hear anything although shows the song playing on TFT. It also chooses Apple Music rather than my Spotify account. Any advice?
The cubby in the RT is VERY small and fiddly. My mate has to remove the case from his phone too. I think you’ll have to do what we both do. I have the K1600 with the same TFT. Close all apps on you phone. Open Spotify and start a track playing manually. Turn volume up full on your phone while the track is playing and press pause before people start staring!!! Then open the connected app and let it connect and go to ‘map view’. Then carefully drop the phone into the cubby without turning it off or opening the connected app ‘curtain’ then you hopefully will be fine 👍🏻
Hi I have a problem I have a Samsung S9 + navi 6 and I bought a motorcycle now the last model 2021 GS and I have a Sena 50S if I do not have a navi in the holder everything works and as I put it in the holder so they stop talking phone calls to the helmet where there could be a problem Thank you Petr
Petr. Maybe watch my other video on connecting everything to the TFT. When you pair the Nav to the phone you have to switch off phone and media in the Nav6 or it turns off the TFT. Pair phone to TFT. Pair headset to TFT. Pair phone to Nav and headset to Nav but turn off the extra channels in Nav6. Do not pair headset to phone 👍🏻
Niklas. I’m in the UK so we don’t get the speed limit in a circle from the maps that those using kph do (I do if I switch the TFT to kph). So the square is the speed limit of the road your on at that time. As I was parked it has no limit so puts the dashes in 👍🏻
@@NiklasJohansson70 I’m guessing here as I’m not really sure what you mean but if it’s to the right of the mileage in the top of the TFT it may be the ‘pro riding mode’ indicator??? If you have bought that option (it comes standard in the UK on the TE models) then you will have a little red plug under the rider seat. This is not plugged in from the factory and they should plug it in at 1st service, but they often don’t and it’s still in a plastic bag by the tools. Once this is plugged in you get that indicator on the TFT and have the option to adjust riding modes in settings
@@nickhodgeUK Yes that's the one i meant. I have a -22 1250 GSA with Dynamic Pro and Enduro Pro but does not se that indicator. I have the option to adjust riding modes in the settings even that i have not done the 1st service yet. The bike have only 700km for now and 1st service planned to 17 august.
Can the TFT display Google Maps? Why reinvent the wheel? Just connect the phone to the helmet and phone to Nav Vl and be happy. You get Google maps, Spotify, and phone calls. Get Radar with the S10. You don’t get sounds from Nav Vl, but do see the information. You get hands free with Google Assistant.
Joe. No it can’t and there’s are many things that could work. Much is personally preference. I think the whole integration and motorcycle friendly app is admirable but it’s indefensible if it basically doesn’t work 🤣👍🏻
Hi Nick, there is an new update for iPhone, software version 14.6, improvement of Bluetooth connectivity is one of the items on update benefits list. Tried it this morning, unfortunately situation didn’t get any better. App got disconnected several times and finally cut after less than 50k. (R1200gs 2018)
Yes I updated on Wednesday. Rode out today for 127 miles and only dropped once!!! Still doesn’t excuse the core issue. I updated iOS. Reset TFT, factory reset helmet. Deleted pairings on phone. Re-paired everything. Took ‘jacket’ off phone. Placed in breast pocket. Much better but not reliable enough to Nav a ride for sure 👍🏻
My '21 1250 GSA and my iPhone 12 Pro works 100%, never had an issue, also I never start the Connected app before connecting and that also works for nav and ride tracking, I mount my phone on the bars using a QuadLock so it's pretty close to the TFT./
Hi Rob. Thanks for the detail. It’s tough to nail the issue down. Certainly it’s not fixed (I’ve had another email this week from the developers admitting the issue). What version of TFT software do you have? Is that the same as mine? I have mine in a quadlock now but still far from reliable. Hope yours stays solid 👍🏻
@@freetimeonline indeed. Thanks. I have a few with 12’s having issue and many with older phones not. Hello Nick i have an android device but there is a time that works all of them interhone connecting cradle device But there ara Many times that my bmw motorrad application didn't accept the cradle through the connectivity hub. Do you know why?
Good afternoon, Just come across your video, and I notice that on your vehicle display on the Nav6 you have black figs on a white ground. My Nav6 has it the other way round, and I'd like to change it, but can't for the life of me work out how! Can you help? Thanks in advance.
Hi Nick, it might be worth you trying a different iPhone as I’ve never had any issues with my iPhone XS. I have many recorded rides in the connected app with over 100 miles of continuous recording. I was on the NC500 last week and my nav 6 packed up on day 2 so I relied on the connected app for the rest of the week without issue. My iPhone is on the latest firmware as is my 1250gs. Hope this information helps, and keep the vlogs coming
Hello Nick thank you for sharing your knowledge of the connectivity app, I’m new to the brand and have recently bought a 21 Model GS and like you found the app keeps dropping out I’m not very technical however I do see a benefit in running this app. In my short time using the app not only did it keep dropping out it also kept trying to re route me to the first destination I used that maybe me I’m not sure, I have mounted my iPhone in the cradle above the TFT screen so couldn’t be closer. I thought if I could use this app using off line maps then I would not need to buy a Nav 6 let’s see .
Hi Gary. If this was reliable it would be all you need. I would never by a Nav 6 again. I really only use it for telemetry as in the video or at a certain zoom when riding to see ‘tightness’ of bends coming up. Ride safe 👍🏻
Great video 👍🏻👍🏻 My connection is slightly different as a couple of others have said. I find it doesn’t drop off while riding but it just totally loses connect sometimes when the bike is turned off and back on again. It can literally lose everything and forget my phone and even helmet. I’m going to try an android though now. Thanks 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK I’ve got an update…. So my connected app started just closing down as soon as I opened it, so I deleted the whole app and reinstalled it and it worked without any problems on the new version. It connected the fastest it’s ever connected and stayed connected. The only other thing that could be a factor is that I left my key in the side panniers. Could it be the keyless ride interference with the connection. I’ll try my putting the key in my pocket on the next ride.
@@Adventure4LifeTV thanks for coming back. I have the new/new version. There were two in as many days. It’s slightly better but I’m beginning to think it is a power/range issue. If I have it in my breast pocket it’s near fine. In my tank bag which has ‘structure’ it’s not. When running it does consume a lot of power but I wouldn’t normally worry about that as I can power the phone. Off to Northern Ireland next week so we’ll see 👍🏻
thanks Nick - my iphone works and keeps the connection (an iPhone 8s) BUT the sound doesn't work in the rider helmet and very very faintly in the passenger helmet when it is connected. My Galaxy Note8 works perfectly - so frustrating....
Riccardo. You have to turn the volume up ON THE PHONE while it is ‘in mode’. So start your music and turn the volume up full, get someone to call you and while in the call turn the volume on the phone up full, when the Nav instructions are playing turn the volume up on the phone. It’s a one off setting but must be done while the channel is in use 👍🏻
Gave up a long time ago with my Nav V and iPhone XR, use cheap mount that fits in the OEM mount on my GSA or just put the phone in a Quadlock mount. The BMW app is great until it forgets to reconnect, I think the issue is IOS not an app issue😢. Love the TFT but would like to use full functionality.
Matt. I’m in slightly shaky ground here as my mates all have Senas and we just do ‘intercom pairing’ by holding centre button a few seconds until you get that command then press one button again and boom, all connected but the Sena app is only using the BT while they connect. The range of BT is short so it can’t be using it while riding so if you must connect them and disconnect Sena from phone. For sure this connection will disconnect the TFT. Most intercoms use at least radio signals for connection and many new ones Mesh 👍🏻
Hi Nick, unfortunately iPhones are very troublesome on many many things not just on BMW tft screens. I dislike Apple products very much for this reason, I have owned Samsung products for many years & have just upgraded my phone to the S21 series & connected to my BMW app in about two minutes and went for a ride using the nav with absolutely no issues what so ever. Every issue I have read about with people struggling with connectivity on the BMW owns an iPhone.
Thanks for the great video Nick. I recently purchased a 21 850GS. My IPhone 12 Pro Max and Sena 20s Evo both connect quickly and easily but when I go to the telephone section the phone book and call list are both stuck on updating. I can receive calls but cannot make calls. Have you run into this?
There are a few possibilities. Be aware it can sometimes take a few minutes anyway before the list is available but BMW have published a limit I’m not sure of the exact number but it was at least over 1,000 so if you have near that it could be the reason. Also sometimes it seems the permission to access contacts on the iPhone doesn’t filter through and I then delete the pairing on phone and TFT and re-pair ensuring you ‘allow’ sync of contacts and favourites 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK I don’t think I have anywhere near that many contacts. I deleted and repaired the phone about four times today to mo a avail. I may re pair it in the morning and let it run for about 10 minutes and see if the contacts show up then. I can’t seem to figure out what the issue is. Each time I pair it I allow the contacts to sync. I’ve even gone into the Bluetooth connection and made sure everything was allowed to sync.
If that doesn’t work, reset the TFT and start afresh. Settings>Reset All. You may find it defaults to ‘wrong settings’ in places. For example my alarm arming ‘beep’ is off by default and tyre pressures are in bar but only takes a few minutes to set those back. Good luck
I suppose a solution but at some slight cost , for us iPhone users, would be use a cheap Android second phone for media and app use with calls forwarded from our iPhone for the duration ?
You’re right Nick. It shouldn’t be. Really disappointing at the lack of engagement from BMW . It’s as if they regard this as an unimportant ancillary issue. Might be a first world issue but I upgraded to a new bike with the tft partly because I was keen on the integrated system. At present I would have been better off keeping my 2017 model with the analogue clocks.
Hi Nick from South Africa 🇿🇦. Do you know if the new TFT on the R1250rt (the 10" one) works better with iPhone or an android phone? thank you sir BTW, how come my connected app is showing 3.1.1 (android)? I would think that worldwide, the versions of the app would be the same? Even my spotify app on android is a 8.30.889. Wonder my version are different? any thoughts? is it country specific?
Hi Zunaid. The new RT works differently. The phone and media works by Bluetooth and seems to work well with either. The map function works with a ‘bike WiFi’. I think they have some testing issue with that where if you’re on a phone call the maps drop from the ‘rich’ colour ones you see in all the ads, to more like the GS with turn-by-turn. Mostly that seems to happen but then the WiFi doesn’t reconnect and give you the rich maps back. Or sometimes the WiFi drops when not in a call. Remember that is very new though 👍🏻
Sorry Zunaid. Answered half a question. Yes, I’m sure versions are country specific. With Spotify it’s likely different copyright between uk 🇬🇧 and south Africa 🇿🇦👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK thank you kindly for the reply Nick. I just bought the RT, and I have a Samsung phone. I am having issues with my spotify app...no album art, like you mentioned, biggest problem is the wonder wheel control for track skip and volume. it's a hit and miss with the Samsung phone. I am due for a contract upgrade for my phone, and can choose either iPhone 12pro or Samsung s21. I know with my daughter's older iPhone, the album art came up, and I could skip tracks. My nav is not first priority, but on the Samsung s10, I have never had drop nav, etc. Always worked evertime I started the bike, and recorded all journeys....
@@zunaidkajee4540 some have said it’s the combination of android and Spotify with album art. People using other music apps have album art but for that feature it’s not worth swapping Spotify for that. On the phone ask the BMW dealer which is working best with your bike (although that may change of course) and keep your TFT updated at least until you’re stable 👍🏻
Hello nick i would like to suggest to turn off wifi completely from iPhone settings I notice it will keep connection more reliable my experience fix most of my drop connection issues also i notice when you stop for fuel some time connection not reconnect perfectly and you need 15 to 60 sec for helmet and phone to pair connection I use iphone xs and cardo bold and all software currently updated
I was supposed to but it still didn’t fix the problem of Nav dropping out. All other connections (phone/media) generally ok. Software updated end of March to 022_008_020 (note the 008 as that’s the difference). Contacted app developers and they’ve asked me to try it without my Apple Watch??? Hi I have a question regarding the firmware for the SRL2 in your video it says 1.0.9. But I can’t find that version on Senas homepage. The latest version is 1.0.6? Do you know where I can get the newer version? And thanks for a good video.
@@nickhodgeUK I have the same helmet as you do. But as you say the latest firmware for the SRL2 is 1.0.6. I didn’t know that the SRL fit the neotech II.
I've recently seen this and have the new 2021 1250 RT and this doesn't work either but I have an additional problem in that the app is asking to reinput my password and I can't remember it but the reset link doesn't work and I can't reset my password. It won't send a reset link to my email. Ive been trying for nearly a month to get BMW to fix this to no avail. Has anyone else had this problem and been able to fix it?
Yes. It was a BMW issue. Try deleting the app. Download the latest version and you should be good to go. If not send a support request to BMW via the app. It may take a week or so to get a reply but they do reply 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Thanks Nick but I can't get into the app at all. Ive emailed BMW several times separately and yesterday they said they have sent a link to me to reset my password but that hasn't come through either ! Ive not been able to use it now for nearly a month. On the later bikes you only have the TFT so no navigation at all. As you say it takes them about a week to respond. Previously they said I had to reset the TFT on the bike but twice sent instructions for a car. Pretty hopeless all round!

Nick I have the 2021 RT. My iPhone doesn't drop out as yours is doing with the navigation and the app stays connected. I don't know if it is because there is because there is a specific connection box on the RT for your phone, but it works and doesn't drop out. the only thing that does annoy me though is that it is my data that gets used up by the navigation system and you need a lot of data for the navigation and app to work if you want it on all the time. Hence I do not have the navigation on al the time when I ride on the 2021 RT.
@@nickhodgeUK Yeah, I think it's weakness is the amount of data you need depending of course how much you want to use the navigation I guess with the new RT setup. I hope you do get a suitable solution Nick, it's a shame it's happening when these things should be "ironed" out before release, largely, so that no major teething problems are left with the end user. Good luck Nick.
Hi Paul. I, too, have the 2021 RT and when it comes to the Connected APP, I use my quite old iPhone SE. The only issues with the phone/TFT pairing have been that it does not support wireless charging, nor was I originally able to hear my music on the phone or the navigation commands - maybe the phone's old WiFi is the culprit. However, these problems were rectified by plugging the phone to the USB port with a €10.00 Lightning data cable. Now the phone charges, plays music and gives me the navigation commands. However, I am baffled by your observation regarding the nav system using up your data. According to the BMW Motorrad Connected APP's FAQ: "The navigation will still function with the map data without access to a mobile network as long as GPS and Bluetooth are enabled on the smartphone. Mobile data is only required to use additional functions, for instance traffic information." This rings true to me because, since early April, I have ridden the bike almost daily (wx permitting) and, on average, the map has been on for about an hour every day. My phone contract has a monthly 12 GB data plan and (I just checked the current situation) this month I have used 0.1 GB of data - I do not use the phone for much anything else than occasional phone calls and text messaging. This would seem to corroborate BMW's assertion that the nav system does not use mobile data when it is on. Mind you, I do not use live weather or live traffic apps or anything of the sort - only the basic features of the Connected app. Nor do I record my rides. I have no idea whether that would affect the amount of data being used. Maybe you should consult your cell phone provider about this... And Nick, thanks a heap for yet another great video. Even though I am an RT rider, most of my friends ride GS's and it is always good to stay abreast of issues affecting their bikes as well.
@@porcobianco thanks for the great comment. I also wonder if you don’t download the maps it’ll use what it needs ‘live’ via the phones fat connection?? 👍🏻.
@@porcobianco Hey Porco thanks for your insight. There's definitely something going on with my phone and its data getting swallowed up. Apple contacted me when I had been using the phone with the BMW app on the bike and warned me I had used half my allowance. So I stopped using the nav and the app on the bike because I couldn't work out what I could do to stop that and continue to use the app and phone on navigation..??? I'm not that fantastic with the tech but I had set up the tech correctly for using the phone on the bike and to get the nav working, I'm not sure why my provider warned me of the rate my data was being used up...???
Hi Trevor. I do, although I only have the channel connected for the live traffic (whatever the apps called?). I switch off the phone and media channel. I will try it completely off though as some else suggested it may be an issue
@@madplumber29 no. I’ve played some more and convinced it’s a range thing. Everyone having success seems to have the phone handlebar mounted. I’m pretty against that as there’s enough distraction and didn’t want to add to it but I’ve ordered a quad lock and that should be here today and I’m off to Northern Ireland on Wednesday. Here’s hoping 🤞🏻
Hi Nick, I appreciate that you’ve now jumped ship and gone over to a new K1600, I’m in the process of entering the new world and upgrading my GSA to one with TFT screen and was wondering if the use of the quad lock had any impact on the connection issue? Many thanks
No. None at all. I rode a new GS a couple of weeks back and it stayed connected and worked fine so maybe, just maybe it’s fixed with latest software on the TFT. I had the Quadlock. Against my better judgement so if the phone went to sleep (definite issue) I could wake it easily. Also while using the app it does suck battery juice heavily so it helped to have it charging. Lastly, if all else fails with it there, you can use google maps 🤣👍🏻
Hi Nick, I'm experiencing the same issues with my set up, running an Iphone XR and the Connected keeps freezing or crashing, it then in turn locks up my control of changing the music after that. I am running the same set up as yourself and I have also played around with chopping the data connection between Nav 6 and XR this seems to help somewhat but then I am loosing the smartlink for the traffic cameras on the Nav6. Bloody frustrating isnt it ha. Keep up the good work bud cheers
There was an update to iOS yesterday (14.6) which specifically mentioned Bluetooth connections so I’ve reset everything (I like to do this in case a redundant setting carries over) deleted and reinstalled app and we’ll see what that gives us. I am wondering, but can’t tell do to the flaky nature of the connection whether the new ‘live traffic update’ feature of the connected app will make the smartlink redundant??? I sooooo hope we get there one day 🤣👍🏻
ThanKs Nick.
I hope you get your kit fixed; it can’t be a serious flaw 🤔
Let us know how you get on, please?
Hi Roger. No you’re not out of date but for sure it works with some combinations so don’t change a thing!! 👍🏻
I have a 2021RT and an I Phone 8 and have no problems, navigation works fine, it hasn't dropped out yet.
Yep. The RT uses a bike WiFi network for the Nav instead of Bluetooth. Your connected app works slightly differently too 👍🏻
Nick, thank you for reporting these differences and challenges you are experiencing.
Hi Anthony. You got 30 seconds at the end of this one 🤣👍🏻
My thoughts precisely Andrew, thanks for comment
I found that disabling battery protection for the app on my Samsung solved all the issues... now working really well.
Glad it worked for you. It’s a shame as I think the Nav in the connected app has real potential 👍🏻
Morning Nick this is interesting as I have an BMW R1250RS (2020) and using the iPhone initially I had the same issues as you are having with the iPhone, and raised a support request to the BMW guys behind the APP (via the feedback option in the app its self)
They suggested I upgraded my firmware of my bike which my local dealer did for me and the other piese of advice the said was to "Make sure within the App on the iphone the Location is set to Always" after doing this back in August last year I have found my connected and and sybch to my dash to work as I would expect it all the time.
Hi Stuart. I think your S9 is the key. My borrowed one works fine. It does take slightly longer to connect though randomly 👍🏻
Totally right Iain. As I said I think they're doing right with a motorcycle specific app but boy it's frustrating!
I’m with you bro.
You are very right Derek!
Rgds Markus
It's funny Markus, some seem to be OK with iphones, but for sure it's not an android issue
I have same problems with my R1250RT 2021 and the Navigation on the BMW TFT with iOS 14.5.1 on iPhone 12 pro max
Thanks for the gread video Nick!
(Frustrating heh?)
warmest regards
Thank you. You seem to have been consuming a number of videos 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Ha ! It’s hot here in the Algarve … so riding is cancelled ! (30C )
i BELIEVE i HAVE FOLLOWED THE VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS CORRECTLY.
You may have figured out the issue… it is when the helmet is also connected.
Thanks a lot Nick!! Great video, as usual very didactic and complete.
Thanks Camillo. I had to look up didactic!
Great review and conclusion, Nick
I had the same issue with the disconnected iphone SE2 when I worn it in my breast bag or in the tank bag.
Thanks for the contribution Daniel. Every little helps (copyright Tesco) 🤣👍🏻
A year after you posted this video BMW still hasn't solved the problem, unfortunate.
It’s better but for sure not fixed
I have no probs with iOS 14.6 + TFT + Nav6 - all work seamlessly together.
Cheers Doug
Oh that’s a shame. It seemed this was just an iPhone issue and in fact latter iPhones at that. Hoping it gets fixed at some point 👍🏻
I get a new one at next launch (September) 👍🏻
hi nick
i have the 2018 gs te, TFT firmware 022/005/041, i use iphone 11pro 14.5.1 software and up to date ‘connected app’ 3.0.2 and it very rarely drops the connection on the connected app and can very rarely and it is rare have gremlins within media and phone.
done about 120 miles today, recorded 4 ‘rides’ in the ‘connected app’ without any issues.. but i admit i now shutdown and restart iphone before each weekend ride and i ALSO ‘delete all connections’ in the TFT and then reconnect as requested.. once that’s done on a friday morning i’m generally good all weekend.
i keep my iphone in my right leg pocket on normal screen settings, ie after 30 seconds the phone goes into standby (blank screen)
i’m happy so far
Hi Bazz wish I could find a common theme. I wonder if the TFT updates (as yours is a few back) is trying to make it better but making it worse??? Frustrating 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK probably a good idea as you said in your video to try another couple of iphones?
or deleting the ‘connected’ app from your 11pro and then downloading it again?
I guess to much technology can be a bad thing. If I had to go through that when I went riding....I'll go in the car.
Good report Nick keep it up.
Well tech itself isn’t bad but bad tech is definitely bad 🤣👍🏻
Hi Nick, I use the S9 and have never had an issue!!! stopping on the motorway, naughty boy :)
Yep it’s a definite iPhone issue. At least it was only the onslip 🤣👍🏻
I have the F900XR and iPhone 11pro max and genuinely don’t have any issues with it dropping out of the connected app
@@mikeball5883 well that’s slightly encouraging. They admit to a small fault but as you can see on mine it’s not small. Is you phone handlebar mounted??
@@nickhodgeUK yes it is Nick
@@mikeball5883 I wonder if it’s a ‘power/range’ issue but you shouldn’t have to handlebar mount it
Again....a detailed video, Nick!!!
That DOES work 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK you're absolutely right!!!!👍👍👍
Hi Nick, great to see an objective review made in a very clear and informative way - well done!
@@nickhodgeUK A quick update:
The connectedride cradle arrived but it's a disappointment.
Hi Nick, I have a 2019 GS 1250 , I use an iPhone 10 which works fine on all aspects. I haven’t had a software updates since October 2020..
Thanks Ben. I may try my wife's 6S and see if that improves it
@@nickhodgeUK hope you get it sorted! How are you finding the GSA after the GS? Great work by the way!

Same issue with my iPhone 12 Pro. Last two rides have, however, worked 100% (over one hour each).
Fingers crossed for you 🤞🏻
Very interesting and comprehensive video, Nick. Strange.
By the way, my phone is always in either the breast pocket of my jacket or the front pocket of my jeans.
You fill my heart with joy. Here’s hoping 🤞🏻
More important. How’s the GS??
@@nickhodgeUK Im loving it. What a bit of kit this is. 230 miles today, Had a Honda Crosstourer before, good bike but the GS feels more fun.

@@nickhodgeUK with the Navigator IV being dropped from the new K Series, looks like BMW are fully committed to this system, so hopefully it'll get resolved soon

Pair headset to TFT. Pair phone to Nav and headset to Nav but turn off the extra channels in Nav6. Do not pair headset to phone 👍🏻
Hi and thank's for your video!
I'm wondering what the square sign with two lines to the left, left from your km reading, stand for?
Niklas. I’m in the UK so we don’t get the speed limit in a circle from the maps that those using kph do (I do if I switch the TFT to kph). So the square is the speed limit of the road your on at that time. As I was parked it has no limit so puts the dashes in 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK sorry but i meant the little square on the row att the top.

I have the same configuration you do. Today my app recorded the first 10 miles of a 50+ mile ride.

Great video 👍🏻👍🏻
My connection is slightly different as a couple of others have said. I find it doesn’t drop off while riding but it just totally loses connect sometimes when the bike is turned off and back on again. It can literally lose everything and forget my phone and even helmet.
I’m going to try an android though now.
Thanks 👍🏻
Oh and one other thing, they should allow us to be able to update the software ourselves maybe..
Yep that can happen. I’m never quite so infuriated with that as I’m now adept to reconnect. Hope the android works for you 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK I’ve got an update….
@@nickhodgeUK thank you!
You’re in the same place it seems. Mad eh?? Let’s hope this latest iOS update does something?? 👍🏻
Nick, If you don't pair the phone and Sena, is there an issue pairing senas with other riders through the sena app?
Hi Nick, this is a long shot, but have you tried without the protective case on your iPhone?
I’ll give anything a go Robert but it’s pretty thin and wirelessly charges ok 👍🏻
Hi Matt. For sure the Android is flawless with the app and Nav 👍🏻
You could or swap the sim as I’m doing at the minute. I’m trying to find a solution that makes the iPhone work but it shouldn’t be this tough 👍🏻
Do you know if the new TFT on the R1250rt (the 10" one) works better with iPhone or an android phone?
thank you sir
BTW, how come my connected app is showing 3.1.1 (android)?
Hi Paul. The system in the new RT is much different. As it the App for it. It uses WiFi as opposed to Bluetooth 👍🏻
Hi Nick, does it have any effect disconnecting your Nav VI, assuming it was connected?
Hi Trevor. I do, although I only have the channel connected for the live traffic (whatever the apps called?). I switch off the phone and media channel. I will try it completely off though as some else suggested it may be an issue
@@nickhodgeUK Did it make a difference?
