You should try to go past that,Gundams are important to the plot of course but the stories are amazing and sometimes really dark (weaponized child, racism, politics etc..) , it's not just "Big Megazord"
Just a heads up, no Gundam ever is about mechas, I mean, this one in specific is a little bit more than the others, but that's more of an exception, Gundam and every mecha really is about the conflict of humans using giant robots as an advanced weapon for conflict, really recommend you watch Gundam Thunderbolt December Sky for example
