    The highest concentration of arsenic is found in fruit juice. Walmart (equate) brown rice scored excellent when tested for arsenic. Very low levels. All food contains arsenic. Rice grown on old cotton fields tests higher because arsenic was used as a pesticide for cotton.

    Yes that’s true. It also takes longer to cook. However, an Asian Professor did show on TH-cam how to cook rice to reduce the amount of arsenic. He takes a stock pot with boiling water in it, like you were cooking pasta and puts the rice in it, and then drains that rice water out. He says it removes 60 to 80% of the arsenic. Now this was done with white rice, but I don’t see why it couldn’t work for brown as well. I would try boiling it until it’s partially soft and then drain it that would also reduce the amount of cooking time needed. Before we became aware of the arsenic issue, my mother used to parch our brown rice in a heavy cast-iron skillet like popping corn. This would break the husk and reduce cooking time.

    • @melissasaint3283
      @melissasaint3283 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +35

      Not clickbait, she is up to date on this topic.
      On the one hand, rice has **always** contained a degree of arsenic, because it absorbs naturally occuring arsenic from soil.
      But first:
      It's worth noting that the cultures that traditionally eat a LOT of rice (much of Asia and Central America) also traditionally eat mostly WHITE rice, And they wash it the way she is describing.....and many even wash, then soak, then rinse it again before cooking.
      That not only significantly lowers the risk of food poisoning from rice (which is definitely a thing, don't take my word for it)
      It also, coincidentally, removes a TON of the arsenic. Those cultures who are living
      healthy lives eating many cups of rice per day, do EXACTLY what she is suggesting.
      Brown rice, in recent tests, can even contain 150% more arsenic than white.
      When you eat rice and thoroughly rinse it first, you remove a lot more.
      It's probably not a coincidence at all that places like the Dominican Republic or Japan
      eat white and clean it before cooking.
      2. Many pesticides have contained arsenic, which has accumulated in the soil in regions where they were heavily used.
      That has changed risk level around rice from where it was historically.
      Rice grown in the Southern US, for example, probably contains more arsenic now than it did a century ago.
      3. The health risks of long-term, moderate arsenic exposure aren't obvious. Isn't not an immediate toxic effect. But among other things, it raises your risk of several cancers significantly, and isn't at all healthy for young children.
      Many pediatricians are warning parents of young children away from brown rice cereal due to concerns from current research.
      This is absolutely NOT clickbait.
      Because I am forced to eat more rice than your average person, I eat white and thoroughly wash it, and have for a long time

      Although it may be a low amount, consuming it several times a day like many people do means you are continously introducing the arsenic into your body. If you don't eat rice regularly, than you are correct to not be all that concerned for it.

      @mimsydreams 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @aliciamcgarvey2774 Weird how most East Asians eat rice with every meal and somehow don't die of arsenic poisoning 🤔 Many also advocate for NOT washing rice, too.
      This is as much of an issue as cyanide being in apples; You're not going to die from eating apple seeds daily.
      "The dose makes the poison". Humans out here sipping absinthe and injecting botulinum toxin into their foreheads, but sure... brown rice is gonna kill you 🤣

    Some cultures parch and use heat to remove whatever is on the outside of the rice grains in a safe, heavy pot before boiling the rice, then throwing away the water afterwards. Definitely depends on culture. A diet dependent mainly on rice can be beneficial to some and not optimal for others. Culture, your body's tolerance and adaptation are key. Rice can be unhealthy for more reasons than arsenic content.

    And another thing: they don't stop the milling process when they've stripped away the bran...they keep going and take the germ, too. So, in white rice, you essentially have the carbohydrate that's left after the fiber and nutrients have been removed from the grain. We add back in cheap sources of vitamins and minerals and call that "enriched".

    Basmati brown rice from California, India or Pakistan is your lowest arsenic choice. It’s also good to do your own research. I buy rice in bulk and vacuum seal it. The last rice I bought was jasmine rice from a particular area in California that had tested with the least amount of arsenic in the USA.. but as another commenter already explained it’s the form of arsenic that matters. White rice is empty calories with no nutritional value contributing to obesity, gut disease, and diabetes to name a few. I avoid it as much as possible.

    Rice grown in the United States has twice the amount of arsenic than Asia. Washing rice is essential for this bit the most important reason why you wash is any manufacturing contaminants from the hulling process (when the shell of the rice is taken off the grain), or milling process in the case of brown rice. The Arsenic is absorbed from contaminated water. So you can't wash it away.

    Consumer Reports did the testing for arsenic which is in the soil. What soil makes a big difference. Rice grown where cotton used to be grown is very high in arsenic due to bole weevil poison that was used extensively there. I won't eat brown rice either because it still has the outer covering where most of the arsenic is. This testing was done over 8 years ago so maybe something has changed? I have no faith in the industry to monitor the levels themselves. If I recall correctly, the article listed other sources of this substance which is naturally occurring but certain areas /crops were at dangerous levels. Some juices, fruit had higher levels, I believe.

    White rice -- particularly basmati, jasmine and pre-cooked “instant” rice -- tends to have lower concentrations of arsenic than brown rice because arsenic accumulates in rice bran. Rice varieties grown in California or imported from Southeast Asia are often lower in arsenic than rice grown in other parts of the U.S
