@@NestAndNature because if you cut through the root (top to bottom of onion) to cut it in half on the first cut the juice is not released that causes the tearing reaction since the root would remain attached throughout the process.

Cut through the root and leave the root on as you cut it to avoid the tears
Thank you for this tip! Why is it that you cut through the root and not right beside the root, if the root is the cause of the burning vapors?

You need to wear swimming goggles.
