My understanding is that VoicePlay have received offers in the past, but chose to remain independent. Likely for the reasons that you listed- despite the hard work and long hours, they do prefer to be in charge of their own output. Plus, Layne co-owns the video studio in which they shot this video, so they aren't short on resources. Due to the members of the group having all worked at the Disney parks at some point also has provided them with many contacts- costuming companies, makeup artists, etc- that they have utilized brilliantly in their video production. Plus it doesn't hurt that both Geoff and Layne are top-notch vocal arrangers, and Eli is starting to show up in that arena as well. When you consider all that they have going for them, the fact that these guys aren't as big as PTX or Home Free feels like an absolute crime. They certainly have earned all the acclaim.
Also Tony Wakim, who is Layne’s partner at Pattycake Productions and is a former Voiceplay baritone, is also a brilliant costumer. He made Rachel’s dress for Phantom and all the special costumes for their Greatest Showman medley. Also, Eli has learned lighting, keeping that in house as well
@@Wildecat10 Eli is also extremely proficient in UnReal Engine, so does any digital backgrounds they might need. Additionally, they also do their own video editing and the first pass at the audio edit before sending it on to Ed Boyer for final audio (he's pretty much the best for acapella audio work)
Layne is affectionately known as VioLayne. So damn talented - all of them! They have such a large body of work spanning multiple genres - they're going to keep you busy for a while 😉. My personal favourite Layne arrangement is "In the Air Tonight". They do put in the hard graft and never put out something sub-par. Yes, they want to be independent- which is absolutely noble in this day and age! Thank you for your lovely reaction. 🌹🕊
Geoff and Layne have been singing together since middle school and professionally since they graduated in 1997. Earl Elkins Jr was their high tenor, also from the beginning when they rebranded to Voiceplay. He left in 2020 for personal reasons. J joined them in 2018 two years after their baritone left. Earl has not been replaced, Cesar took J's slot. They are one man short and work with a wonderfully talented group of friends to take that fifth position. Pre Covid, they toured extensively. Geoff, Layne, and Eli are all married with children, Voiceplay does not intend to start touring again. Sad for us, good for them. Subscribed in anticipation of more Voiceplay and Geoff.
Thanks for a wonderful VoicePlay reaction to Nothing Else Matters and thanks for the shout out. No matter what song you choose, VoicePlay and Geoff won't disappoint. They have released Thriller for their Halloween video and it is amazing.
Subscribed before I even heard your reaction. Anyone who goes to all the trouble to research as much as you did deserves a chance. For future information, Eli's first name is Eliezar, thus shortened to Eli (El-ee).
Subscribing! I apparently missed your first reaction to VP. Just found you with this one. I especially noted your look of satisfaction when Eli hit that long higher note. He insisted on adding that bit! Geoff was the arranger on this song, but Eli is the real rocker in the group. He said the style needed that higher note, so Geoff agreed. One thing I really admire about them, they don't seem to let any ego get in the way of the art. Geoff also did arrange the guitar solo to be sung originally, but was smart enough to realize this was one of those times where a 'guitar' (violin) solo should be included. And us VoicePlayas LOVE when we get a rare VioLayne appearance. If you thought he was good on the violin here, you should check out their cover of Imagine Dragon's "Warriors" - another violin rocker by them.
Both Layne and Eli can sing bass - and J None is currently singing bass with the navy in their top chorus, stationed in DC. Of course Eli does the high notes effortlessly, but Layne can and has hit a D5, and so can Geoff. They're all crazy talented. Their unusual ranges allow their arrangements to follow an individual voice at will, instead of hopping back and forth based on capacity. It allows their arrangements to be freer and quite different from everyone else. (Layne rarely pulls out his violin, but the first time he did, we gave him the nickname VioLayne, which has stuck.)
Eli, in my opinion, is a baritenor with an oddly high and wide chest range. Eli shows off his low chest range, too, many times; "Kiss the Girl" in their "Little Mermaid" medley being a prime example where he shows he is a baritenor.
Layne started violin when he was 4 and Geoff started piano when he was 5. Geoff uses instrumentation with his solo work. He uses plug-ins with his piano. His solo stuff is amazing too. My favorite is Ain't No Sunshine, but he doesn't have a single bad one. You will find Voiceplay and Groff Castelluci fans very loyal and happy to come and watch your reactions.
Thanks for your reaction. Fun fact Layne has been playing the violin since he was 4. He's only pulled it out three times so far and instantly got the nickname of VioLyne. The other two songs are Warriors and The Lion Sleeps Tonight. I think this was a risky arrangement and if they'd been signed they would never have been allowed to do it. So glad they're independent. You definitely have to check out their latest release Thriller. It is beyond epic.
Thank you so much for reacting to this amazing cover of my most favourite group #VoicePlay and also your dedication to the nice people, who requested it. You really should listen to more VoicePlay 🥰
This one was done the week of my birthday and what a gift. Eli is the bald tenor who's moniker is Rock God. He came to VoicePlay in 2010 after playing in a few rock bands. Cesar is the newest and youngest member (3 yrs ago) and he definitely comes with sass. If you are interested, Cesar's audition with VoicePlay with We're Good (Dua Lipa) is marvelous.
I enjoyed this so very much! One of my favorite things is watching people experience VoicePlay for the first time, and this is in my top three of songs they cover. They just slayed it. You mentioned really like the breathiness when Cesar sings -- you might really like their cover of Creep, where Cesar is really front and center for a lot of it. Rock on!
I'm also glad you got onto VoicePlay! They have SO MUCH good music for you to catch up on, and I'm looking forward to being here for the journey! With it being spooky season, they have a whole playlist of Halloween songs they've done, and most recently they've dropped a cover of Thriller that I personally think is one of the best things they've ever put out, so if you're looking for a next one to watch, that might be a good one to look at! Also, don't worry about the names - you're doing far better than a lot of people do at the start, and it's only the second time you've watched them. With all the artists you watch, it's not exactly reasonable to expect you to remember everyone's name all the time.
Since it is the spooky season, you might check out Geoff’s cover of Jack’s Lament from Nightmare before Christmas. Although there are others that show his range more, he does go both (moderately) high and low, which really emphasizes the conflict within Jack. It was always my favorite song from the movie. I love the melancholy/menace of it. Not only are the vocals impressive, but his acting in that just completes the mood. As you go to the older catalog, you’ll see different people. If it helps at all, except for the high tenor who was present from the beginning all the way to 2020, all of the changes have taken place in the baritone spot. As others have remarked they are one member short from Earls departure, and fill that slot with a variety of guest artists. J is no longer a permanent member of the group he is considered a guest artist but that really confuses people! The music in the outro is the karaoke track which is really quite beautiful on its own. They’ve started doing that a few years back and having access to the full track is my second favorite perk of being one of the patrons. This release caught the attention of the iconic rock band Chicago and they were asked to perform with them for a few nights during their anniversary tour. We were extremely excited for them. They’re also being considered for a nomination to the Grammys 🤞on two of their songs so you might want to check those out: MJ’s The Way You Make Me Feel, and Hellfire from Hunchback of Notre Dame. Don’t worry too much about getting the names right every time especially in the beginning. We’re a pretty supportive group not only of them but also reactors to give a good honest reaction. There’s a few trolls out there but they usually only show up once.
Don't worry too much about plugging the VoicePlay members into a label for their singing range - they don't bother with them that much either! While Geoff has an amazing bass, he (still!) considers himself a "baritone with a good bass extension", even when professional singers call him a bass - and his highest chest voice is well up in the tenor range, which he sang in high school! When Geoff is arranging a song (as he did this one), he sends everyone a recording of himself singing their parts for them to learn - he says he may sometimes have to take things down an octave for some of the really high tenor parts, but it's still pretty amazing! Both Eli (tenor) and Layne (baritone) have covered the bass part when Geoff is singing solo in live concerts, and J. None started out singing baritone for the Navy, but is now singing bass! Cesar is considered a baritone, but his tenor range is almost as high as Eli, and may be higher when he goes into falsetto! So, no, they don't "stay in their lanes" as far as singing parts goes - just whatever the song they're singing needs!
Thank you for coming back to VoicePlay! Glad to hear that you plan on reacting to some of Geoff's solo work too. All of these guys are impressively talented. This arrangement was Geoff's so he was in charge of the project. I enjoyed your reaction.
Loved your reaction! Just a bit of trivia -- in the photo you chose of VoicePlay, the leftmost guy is Paul their sound guy. Layne the beatboxer isn't pictured; he's taller and has dark hair. Keep reacting, cheers!
Layne did all the beatboxing, even when he was playing the violin. They tried filming it with him doing both, but thought it looked silly. So for the video he only played. But all the beatboxing on the track was Layne.
Hello! I just found you. I adore VoicePlay so I had to see what you thought. They're the theater kids that we love. I'm glad you enjoyed them, too 😊 it's a very fun rabbit hole! Welcome 😊
I really enjoyed your reaction- thanks! Great job getting their names right on only your second reaction to them! Members of the legendary band, 'Chicago', saw this cover and liked it so much they reached out to Voice Play and Voice Play sang two concerts with 'Chicago' last November. Voice Play has had many offers but choses to do all of their own production without a record label or contract so they have complete control of their creative expression and control over the demands of touring vs family life. Recently, two of their covers have been submitted for consideration for Grammy award nominations for best arrangements instrumental or acapella music ("Hellfire" and "The Way You Make Me Feel") and we are so excited that they have been able to remain independent and get the recognition they deserve for it. Voice Play does do an amazing job on Rock songs that you did not think could be done acapella (check out "In The Air Tonight", "Carry On My Wayward Son" and "Dream On"). They also do an interesting cover of "Whisky In The Jar", an old Irish folk song that has been covered by 'Thin Lizzy' and 'Metallica'. I am subscribed and really looking forward to your Voice Play journey.
This version of NEM made a 60yo rock fan very happy and was hook, line & sinker for me, when l discovered VP (after l got lured in by their Wellerman short). Entered the VP/Geoff rabbit hole with it and don't think l wanna ever leave 😜 They captured the spirit of the original sooo well. The stage & their clothing all black (with the sparce light bulbs added) is of course a homage to the Black album. The famous guitar solo played by VioLayne was a stroke of genius & fitted so well! The arangement (Geoff) blew me away, everyone has moments to shine. Their harmonizing is out of this world imho. And yes, Geoff has an about 5 octave range starting at l think A0(subharmonic) all the way to D5. Really impressive are his climbs and drops in really short time like E1 to D5 in VPs Cover of Enemy or in Oogie Boogie Song from E4 to E1 in seconds... On his solo channel he harmonizes with himself as he clones himself 3-4 times, each clone with its own vocal range & timbre (and its own names & quirks). I would recommend '16 Tons' or his dwarfen songs Misty Mountains/l See Fire/Durins Song (in that order) from The Hobbit movies & the LOTR books for starters, but none of his solos has disappointed me so far. And as VP/Geoff love Halloween there is alot of material for the spooky season. Enjoy your ride in the rabbit hole, l enjoyed your reaction a LOT as it was mirroring my exitement when l heard this one first!
Thanks for the mention. So very glad you enjoyed this. It is my favourite cover of this song. 😊. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your reactions 😊 🇬🇧
Thanks for the shoutout and thanks for continuing to explore VoicePlay. They will not disappoint, being able to sing any genre they choose. The first thought that popped into my mind when this ,NEM, first was released was: I want to hear these my favourite musicians cover my other favourites and cover Sabaton Christmas Truce.
This one was arranged by Geoff, and he is very fond of doing that ascending/descending pattern by giving the guys different notes, as you noticed at the end. This one was A BEAST for them to put together, but they finally managed it and it was SO worth the wait!
This still shot that you have up along with the video, Why is this a photo without Layne in the photo? I see J None, Cesar, Eli and Geoff. Who's the dude on the far left? It's not Layne, because Layne is just as tall as Geoff, and this mystery dude is nowhere Layne's height. Any ideas, commenters?
Sorry, three comments after another on 3 different videos but I have to ask, as you speak of Geoff's bass and such, did you catch him sliding up in 'way' when he sang 'We live it our way' at around 3 minute 20? :p When Geoff sings and you watch his hands carefully, you can catch what he is doing with his voice. (Except for the few times where he deliberately moves it the other way around just to confuse us lol) The others do the movement with hands too and it really shows what they are doing, sometimes even foreshadows. It might be a remnant of their choir days. As for Layne with the violin, he is amazing with that too! In a song called Warriors he is playing on one too, more than in this song. Fans have come to call this combination of Layne with violin: Violayne. Layne learned beatboxing from Geoff, in the beginning of Voiceplay (I believe as 4 to love) Geoff was the beatboxer.
Hey, feel free to comment. I have picked up on some of those indicators. Some musicians have tells like that and then they know it and try to trick us.
It's really hard to nail any of these guys down to a single vocal range or role. All five of them can sing a good solid baritone, but it's almost easier to say what they're mostly _not_ : Eli and Cesar rarely get down into the bass range; I'm not sure if I've ever seen Layne sing in the tenor 1 range, but I could be wrong about that; and Cesar has said he can't beatbox at all. Watch them go and prove me wrong about any of that, though--they simply refuse to be put in boxes or stay in any particular lane.

Speaking about capability to do bass, JNone usually sings high range in Voiceplay but he enrolled on Navy Choir as bass. Let that sink in.

So you are also infected with this virus called Voiceplay 😂😂😂 The only desease i don't want to be cured from🔥
Well that was pretty average
