  • Actor, director and Utah enthusiast Robert Redford shares the story of Sundance Mountain Resort.
Only an hour from Salt Lake City International Airport, the Provo resort is rustic elegance steeped in dramatic scenery. Its 42 runs cross more than 450 acres with 2,150 vertical feet. Its classic cabins boast rough sawn wood and stone fireplaces. Everything breathes high quality.
“What’s the flame that started [Sundance Mountain Resort]? It’s about storytelling. Once I get off Provo Canyon and come up this narrow road, I start to breathe differently. Then when we come up, and open up to Sundance, it’s like ‘Ahhh.’ It’s never been dull coming up this road. It always feels new; it always feels fresh. It sets in motion a different attitude, where I then slow down.” - Robert Redford

I feel the same way. There’s a peace like no other place at Sundance. Nature meeting humanity.

I love how I feel when I go up there. My first memory was having my dad take me up there to ski and when I got on the lift, my wooden skis swung back, then forward right into a pile of snow and both skis broke right in two, lol

I spent almost everyday of my childhood riding the front slopes of Timpanogas on one of my 2 horses~~Silver or Sundance. No saddle. Just me in cut off shorts and mocassins, the sweat of the horse shared under the summer sun. Then there were the blue winter nights, riding your lifts, absorbing the moonlight reflecting off Timp's back..... breathing the icy air. Watching for racoons and porcupines in the evergreens. I think we both know it is impossible to own Timpanogas. She owns us. She breathes life into our souls and only leaves us when we leave her. #redrockyogimomma

While he's not the only "actor" ( director, producer, likely writer ) to gain this type of notoriety, when he does finally die, he will no doubt be remembered well for doing his best to take care of those around him. Even if unintentionally, his directing of the movie, "Ordinary People", helped me, and who knows how many others, to "figure some things out."

Sundance is an excellent resort without the commercialization. Strikes a nice balance of recreation, outdoors and amenities.

Slight correction, Mount Timpanogos (Timp) isn't the "second tallest mountain in Utah", we have many peaks over 13,000 feet here in Utah. Timp, rises to 11,749 ft, which makes it the second tallest mountain in the Wasatch range of Utah, but not of the state.

I love Timp but it isn’t the second tallest mountain in Utah it is like 10th or something. It isn’t even the tallest in the Wasatch Range (Mt Nebo).

Great catch, Chris. Mount Timpanogos is the ninth tallest mountain in Utah. It's the second tallest mountain in Utah's Wasatch Range, second to Mount Nebo as you mentioned.

I was at Sundance a few years back- amazing place. I'm sure after Redford bought in, it got larger and has attracted more visitors compared to the late 'Temp Haven'. Lifetime locals I've talked to also are hesitant on giving high accolades to Redford..
With that said, to me, it felt well preserved but obviously had tourists. Glad that it isn't a mega resort like Snowbird, Alta, etc. I'd definitely go back and throughly enjoyed this video. Kudos!
