Libertad Types - Do You Know the 4 Types of Libertads?

- In this video I do my best to explain the four types of Mexican Silver one ounce LIBERTAD TYPES. Libertads are Mexico's bullion coin. Lately, they've been collected for their numismatic or coin collector value as well. Mexican silver Libertad coins have changed over the years starting with the "old school" lettered edged coins or rounds to the modern reeded edged Libertad. Libertad coins are also called "onzas" or even "gorditas" by some. The Winged Angel of Victory and the Mexican Coat of Arms have also changed on the obverse and reverse over the years. T!!!! Today I picked up 20 of the 2023 1/20 for $90!! Got a roll of the 2008 1 oz libertads for $29.00 a piece at a coin shop in Illinois! These Libertads are beauties

T the Silver Stacker, I like Type 1 the best mainly because of the edge lettering and the chunkiness of the coin. It's my favourite Libertad Type.
me too! I have only found two of them :( all my other ones keep being type 2, 3 or 4... but still beautiful as it gets.

You also have indeed helped me to become(along with WC) fascinated with the lib and all of the other large Mexican coins from the 8 real to the peso and multiple peso coinage as the debasement began. There is no doubt that the stuff outa Mexico was ahead of its time especially for modern stacker.

I prefer the #4 variation. There is nothing wrong with the rest, I like the new reverse and all the coats of arms. To me, it just looks more elegant.

Love the Libertads. Have a couple tubes of Type 4 as well as a 2020 5 oz proof, 2022 2 oz proof, 2022 1 oz proof, 2022 1 oz Burning Libertad, and the 40th anniversary 3 oz coin/bar!

I like the Type 4 best. Most likely because I started collecting them in 2021 but to be honest didn't realize there was more than two designs. Thanks for sharing this one. I learned something from this.
I love the Libertads. I have a bunch of type I and type IV, need to look for II and III. But I gotta go with round. No denomination, just “1 ounce of pure silver”. Doesn’t diminish them at all to me. But for sure round.
the old school is more detailed but the new school has nice proofs and reverse proofs.

I was hoping you would put the round or coin question to bed! For me- I vote coin because the Libertad is backed by the Mexican government as I understand it....so should be a sovereign coin? I like all the varieties but if I had to pick a fav- the old school thick Libs with the edge lettering 👍👍

The lettering change from ONZA to OnZa is because it's 1 ounce silver. Highlighted by capital letters, 1 OnZa = 1 troy ounce = 1 troy OZ

Single. But in all fairness, Libertads in general are amazing... Regardless of the type. My favorite coin (on side all Germania's). I collect Libertads and Germania's AND stack ASE, Krugerrand, Brittania, Maple's and last but not least Kangaroo. That's my two cents. 😊

I recently picked up a '91 libertad for a gift to a friend, watching through this video I wanted to compare the types with what I had, only to mistakenly pick up my intaglio mint libertad tribute wondering why it didn't match up with any of the examples you have =D

Libertads are rarely found in Switzerland where i live and usually quite expensive.

82 was the start of the Libertad. 80 was balance scale onzas.
Despite not having a denomination I do know Mexico officially recognizes libertads as legal tender, making them a coin, right?
Correct. They are a coin.
Type 4 is my favorite as that is what got me into Coins. Another great thing about the Type 4 is that she comes in so many denominations, and in BU, Proof, Reverse Proof offerings.
Some great Libertad Gold designs too (e.g. Argentina 5 Pesos).

Depends on the condition and mintage. It varies.

I don't know. My only Libertad is smaller and on the face with a leaning Liberty says 1/2 onza Plata Pura 2015 let. 999. The reverse is the Mexican eagle with usm.
