At the end of the day, it's your hike... Along the trail, you're going to have your own process as to what you need, what you don't need and any variance in between. I'm certain that you will improvise, adapt and overcome whatever is in front of you. We are looking forward to your journey, and the beauty of having things you don't need is that it's easier to send them back, then it is to try to get them while on trail at a resupply that may have limited resources. HYOH and Track on at your speed, your pace and I'm very confident your videos will reflect your consideration of equipment.
Well said George. It's easier to send them back than it is to get them while I'm out there. I'm hoping the quality of product is worth the quantity of gear! We'll find out very soon as my start date is just around the corner!
I really enjoy the high quality of your videos. I'm like you I will mail back what I don't need, but as of right now, I need it all 😀. I'll be about a week or so behind you. Take care.
@@TrackingHopper Iam sure the videos will be great. I have been on many hikes where i carried to much, sometimes use it all, if not it is good to know that i had it if i wanted it.Have fun.
So the big question is how do you charge up your charger? Do you have a portable solar pack? Are there places to plug in every day or every other day for charging? You are so right about the GoPro battery life. On any given travel day I could use 2 if not 3 of them up in one day. As a photographer I always have "overkill" on me. It's worth the weight.
I’ll be in a hostel or hotel or taking a long stop in a town every 4-5 days and charging, editing, and getting cleaned up. I could bring a solar pack but it’s just more weight.
Don't sweat it too much, I'm taking a z6ii with a 14-24 2.8 lens and full size tripod! 🤣 Landscape photography is something that I really enjoy and I'd rather carry my gear and use it once then not have it and need it once! 😉I do have my base weight (including camera gear) down to 17.5 lbs though. Best of luck on your trip! Maybe ill see you out there.
I made some last minute changes before heading out and left the Nikon behind. I may get it after getting through the colder areas when I can swap out gear. Good luck to you!
I like that battery bag, really cool idea! Also, what do you plan to use to get the files off your camera and GoPro onto the phone for editin? Do they have apps to download them device to device? I have that on my Canon and transferring 4K videos at length tends to take awhile.
I have an adapter that connects to the iPhone. It can connect sd, mini sd, etc. I’ll pull them from the cameras and connect them to the phone. For smaller files I’ll try to use Bluetooth.
A lot of the footage while I’m hiking will be arms length and also with the camera attached to my Pedco Ultrapod. That give me another 8-9” which is plenty, especially with the GoPro on a wide view. That will still get me and plenty of background. This is the tripod amzn.to/3RkY03I Very light but strong enough to hold my Nikon too.
Just curious- what lens are you bringing for your Nikon? Truth be told- I’d probably just bring the kit lens. The quality is decent enough and they’re MUCH cheaper to replace if something happens.
Looks like a lot, but it's probably lite compared to someone that does it professionally like the guy from my out door life hope you get good use of it
Doesn’t seem to be anything there that you haven’t thought long and hard about, and as you said you can offload anything you find you don’t need once you get settled. Out of interest, what’s your total pack weight? Ish.
We just threw food in the bag and did a weigh-in. I’m a little over 36 lbs. we’re going back through everything again to see what areas I can cut. It’s a puzzle. 😂
@@TrackingHopper I wouldn’t worry too much. I reckon you’ll pretty quickly get a handle on what you really don’t need and off load it. As you know, it’ll also take a little while to get your fitness levels up too, no matter how much training you thought you’d done. I’m just looking forward to sharing your adventure and seeing some great footage.
That IS a lot! But It's what you want to use. Which means we (your wievers) get better video. So just HYOH....and give us some good videos 🙂 And by the way: I AM tracking 😉
no backpacking experience. no photography experience. here is my 8 lbs of camera gear. are you going to have time to actually hike between all of the photographing the stunning views of the green tunnel, setting up the tripod to capture action shots of yourself hiking, video editing with your stylus, and charging devices endlessly? just use your phone Ansel Adams. there, I saved you 7 lbs.
I do have some video and photography experience. 3+ years but wanting to get better, especially with photography. As far as hiking, not much but I get more everyday. That’s the journey right? Finding ways to get better at things and working on ourselves? Time to hike? Man, there are a lot of hours in the day. There are even hours in the evening where you can recharge your gear. Never claimed to be Ansel Adams but I’m happy you think so highly of me.
this is some epic Dunning-Kruger. AT vloggers are the absolute worst. why not just go hike the trail and enjoy yourself? leave the camera gear and kitchen sink at home. hiking noobs go down the AT youtube vlog rabbit hole and think, hey i can do that too. i blame darwin and mostly dixie for spawning this AT vlog ouroboros of mediocrity that just keeps regurgitating itself every year. HYOH
That’s the thing man. I am. I’ve watched a few (very few) other hikers. They did their own thing. I’m doing mine. I didn’t want to hike the A.T. because I watched a vlog. I’ve wanted this since I was a kid and am finally at a place in life that I can do it. I am hiking my own hike. There is nothing simple or easy about it. I don’t think that watching a few people is going to make it easy. This is going to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done. It’s going to suck. It’s going to challenge me and I won’t know until I try. I also think I’m going to enjoy it doing it my way.

Looking forward to all your trail videos!

Love that battery bag from Hilltop that saves me from always grabbing the dead GoPro bat instead of the full one!
It’s pretty cool isn’t it?! Simple but smart.

@@TrackingHopper I don't know, I'm a slow mover myself.
😂
Wow! That’s a lot of electronics!!! Can I borrow some of that stuff??? (As long as I don’t have to carry it 😅)
Sure. I’ll let you film for me along the trail. You only have to carry the camera and run back and forth for me. 😂😂
