@@rhondah1587Too true. The followers are rabid and seething with hate for the evil Left. I don’t get this at all. Many on the left are true Christians and live their lives accordingly. But these “Christian” nationalists are not even espousing Christ’s ideals.
They seem to make it up as they go along. Nothing Christian about these MAGAt extremists. Nothing at all.

It scares the crap out of me because I truly know and understand the influence it has on people. It is almost impossible to break free from and if you do, then you have to rebuild your life from the ground up. I lost ALL my friends when I went crazy religious. Then I lost all my religious friends when I left 10 years later. Set boundaries for what can and cannot be discussed with you and be patient if you have loved ones that are into this cult of religion.

An interesting point, one I have also used in arguing against Christian nationalism. It's not as strong a point in favour of this though.
For those that might not know or remember the context of this quote from the bible, it refers to Jesus answering a group of Pharisees (who hated Jesus's claims of authority) who were attempting to trap Jesus into saying to which institution should a religious person's money should support. The religious church of the day or Caesar's secular government. Had Jesus simply answered to Caesar then the Pharisees would call out Jesus as a heretic for supporting Caesar's Roman religion instead of the church. If Jesus answered the church, the the Pharisees would claim the same heresy on the grounds that it was unlawful to steal from the government by denying the tax collectors....
It seems the Pharisees were a little too obsessed with ensnaring Jesus and failed to realize the simple logic of division presented here. But is Jesus advocating a non-theocratic government under Caesar (where people were allowed to practice their own religion though sometimes subject to harassment like the Jewish rebellion in 75 AD) or simply acknowledging that it exists as the government and that in order to function within that society one must submit what one must to that authority?

Norman Lear doesn't deserve the anger the right foments for him. He was incredibly brave serving America in WWII. As a moderate liberal Christian I can't believe how evangelicals and others have fallen for the Limbaugh/Jones demagogues. I watched old friends going gonzo in the 80s listening to Limbaugh and it broke my heart sometimes. They just tore up the Beatitudes and the Gospel commandments with self righteousness.

I was in a bookstore back in about 2003 with my husband, who had a medical condition that was slowly causing him to loose his hearing. We came up on a Rush Limbaugh book, and both or made disparaging comments about Limbaugh. A guy standing nearby jumped on us verbally and say how dare we criticize him when the "poor guy" was going deaf. My husband responded honestly with "I'm going deaf too, but it's not turning me into an asshole". The guy literally didn't know how to respond, and quietly left. A classic response!

You’re right is is not unclear. But you should read just the beginning of the 2025 project from the Heritage Foundation. Of course it twists language up into knots, but I was ready for it negating anything LBTQ+ and really anything remotely pro women or viewed as feminist. But then they completely upend the beginning of the Declaration of Independence, stating that Thomas Jefferson didn’t mean what he wrote and that actually he meant the U.S. should be governed by religion. Which of course he did not want as they were throwing off a monarch with a State religion which that monarch headed. It’s terrifying, and it’s not going away anytime soon.

Dont take this as preaching to you but it has to do with the term faith. And that teaching has been taught by pastors who haven't a clue what it is they are preaching.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.
What is being explained here is the belief that though everything looks bad right now, eventually we will get through it (though it doesnt feel like it today) and one day we will realize it has come to pass and we no longer have to live in faith because once you have it there is no need to keep holding onto the hope of better days.
So many preachers teach faith is doing something stupid to prove you have faith. Like selling your house to start a business even though you have not thought through how the business you would like to do will work in your area. The real cost of time, energy, education etc. Also if you want to be healed and still taking meds you dont believe. All garbage teaching and the people who are of the faith movement have thrown out wisdom and any common sense they may have had to believe that those of the faith should be following this guy because it is gods will. Crazy huh?
The real faith they are supposed to have is that God was in Jesus reconciling the world to himself because he loves it and is love.
See how faith has been misconstrued?

What kind of a Christian truly believes that a consummate liar can be concerned with God's message to the people? The devil, yes - Jesus, no. What kind of a Christian would be caught up in 91 counts of fraud and betrayal? Judas, maybe - Jesus no. Please set the record straight!!

Actually, if you read the gnostic gospel of Judas, his was an essential role in creating Christianity. If Jesus did not get crucified and resurrected, there would not be a religion called Christianity today. According to this gnostic gospel, Judas was the only disciple who understood his special role and was willing to fulfill his part. All the other disciples denied Jesus and ran away. Think about that. Judas was a hero not a zero. Jesus needed someone to "betray" him so the crucifixion and resurrection could happen. Otherwise, Jesus would just have been another itinerant rabbi saying he was the predicted Jewish Messiah.

As a Christian, let me say THANK YOU for this conversation. Emphasis on CONVERSATION actually. It’s how democracies work!
@10:07 RR says you can’t FORCE others to believe what you think they should believe. I would add to that “Nor would we (Christians) WANT to!” Coercion isn’t love. Which would make such a belief system a falsehood. A lie. Pretty sure Jesus wouldn’t want that : )
And come to think of it, a forced religion would be something a bunch of Christians said they never wanted back in the early 2000s… Sharia Law.
    {Not sure if the Religious Right has ever considered that though cause after all, they’re “right”! 😂}
    PS
Christian nationalism is literally the opposite of the Bible and the teachings of the Gospels. And following a person whose beliefs are antithetical to that of Jesus in every single way is not Christianity.
Take care and love each other friends…

Your PS is SPOT ON. It’s the absolute core of the discussion. What the Christian Nationalists (Christo-Fascists) are selling is the antithesis of Christianity. It’s laughable how these people use Jesus in every other sentence, but their politics, and in many ways their lives, are the exact OPPOSITE of Christ’s most fundamental teachings.
“A spokesperson for Heaven quoted God as saying:

My father fought in WWII in Europe to stop Fascism. He was involved with the Episcopal Church (as was my mother) all his life. He was a life long Republican. BUT if he were still alive today he would be disgusted with Trump & MAGA and the whole White Christian Nationalist movement.
At one point in time (early 90's) our own local church was taken over by Fundamentalist Evangelicals. He along with other long time members got the Minister (who was a wolf in sheep's clothing) who started the whole mess removed and kicked out of the Episcopal Church. No shade but it is always wild to see just how much we live in different planes of existence in the same world. In my circle of Black friends we noticed immediately how white, and "Christian" Jan 7 was. My podcast even dubbed it white privilege vs white supremacy. Such a cool reminder how far apart we all can be watching the same events.

I don't usually click on this subject but I recognized Rob Reiner and remembered him and Carroll O'Connor playing Hoover's man vs. Reiner's Roosevelt man. "Michael" would just destroy Archie's arguments and all he could do was melt down and call him Polack and Meathead. I definitely had relatives that had that pre-WWII isolationist, Hooverism, no "nannystate", no NATO, no trade, etc. attitude. Like Donnie Dump.
A popular phrase in the military is "an attitude of gratitude", be glad for what you get because supply lines etc. So i developed and attitude of forgiveness (myself and others) and an attitude of generosity. I'm not starving or suffering so i spread a little of the wealth. I got these from Anger Management and Anxiety Management classes at the VA clinic.
The modern equivalent of faith, hope, and charity. And i don't have to go to a building every week to pay to be told what a bad person i am. 😢

Way back in the 1960s, my dad told me to go back in history as far as I could. Scriptures, history books on all subjects . Then think about it , and break down every war , no matter how small big or giant , to their lowest common denominator , and you will realize that they ha v e are still fought in the names of God and or greed. That is obvious in the little war started by Republicans. This little war we must fight and win , to keep our constitution, and constitution , is being fought in the names of God and greed . So we have to vote BLUE . And my dad told me as well women and children always suffer the most in war.
That is becoming more evident everyday . I m voting for PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN AND VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS . I want 2 of my sisters back from trumpy and qanon .

Religion is a tool, like a hammer is a tool. People are killed with hammers. Jesus said that we should love our neighbors, as we love ourselves. He said; 'How can you love God, which you cannot see, yet hate your neighbor, who you have seen?" Jesus criticized the religious establishment of his time. Jesus said that we are all blessed, in his Sermon on the Mount', even the poor as an example.

Here’s my theory. There are true believers, but many of them are not among the leadership. I think many billionaires back this ideology for the same reason that slaveholders and lords required slaves and servants to attend church on Sundays to hear sermons on hard work and honesty. Damnation is as strong a coercion as a gulag.
