    I don’t know why but the scariest part for me was when Danny left his quarters and he sees the guy in the dog suit

    Great review! One of my favorite books ever, and one of the only books that has legitimately scared me.

  • @stefox70

    1) Laughed out loud when Danny, talking to his friend Scott, actually believed that people lose their marbles.
    2) The only thing that I found didn't work and became annoying - the hedge animals.
    3) Spookiest part was, knowing they were alone in the hotel and suddenly hearing the elevator working!
    4/5.

    • @carterlarson3156
      @carterlarson3156 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I complete agree on all of these! The hedge animals do get kind of annoying and they’re fairly unrealistic in my eyes. And the elevator working without anyone was the scariest part to me as well. Along with when Danny was alone in the tunnel and realized he wasn’t alone.

    Just finished The Shining yesterday, and I really enjoyed it! The ending was much better than the TV mini-series (which I prefer over the movie). I will say that it is a little dated in the language, as well as those 70s pop culture references, but that really doesn't seem to matter in the long run. Once you tune in to The Shining, the story just sweeps you away ;-D

    I read this just before Halloween last year and loved it. I think it was the isolation and the psychology that went along with it that really hooked me. The broken relationships between the Torrance family were perfect for the feel of things once they inhabit the hotel; they're mentally isolated before they're there then become physically isolated. I hadn't thought of the public and private space part of it. Really good review.

    • @EmilyCait
      @EmilyCait  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FinalBlowJoe Thank Joe!
      I'd never really thought about how the Torrence family were mentally isolated from each other, but you are so right. They are a very disconnected family.

    *Comment in the writing style of The Shining*
    Great review! I never thought of the private/public aspect of it, and it shined
    (SHINED)
    a whole new light on the book. That part in the book
    (The Part That Can't Be Named)
    that you described in Room 217 was probably the only time I had to close the book in fear. That part was so creepy! I gave it a solid 4 1/2 stars, and has probably
    (Come out here, you goddam sonofabitch and take your medicine!)
    scarred me from ever staying at a hotel again.

  • @Boogert22

    The scariest part for me was just seeing Jack slowly succumb to the overlook’s grasp on him, seeing him say these horrible things to his beloved son and Wendy, and not ever truly knowing whether or not he was capable of changing history in regards to he and his own fathers relationship. Clearly the hotel is haunted in the book, but how much of that truly played a role in Jacks heinous deeds, and how much of it was just the darkness bred from his childhood. I don’t know, the bathroom scene was pretty unsettling as well. The hedges just did not land for me, similarly the fire extinguisher seemed a bit silly. Great book overall, you really nailed the description of how the shining just makes sense in the story’s world, and how it, aside from some aspects of it, just seem like someone being very sensitive to other’s emotions. Just finished the book so sorry for this word vomit. Great review!

  • @paradisemace1
    @paradisemace1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    All hotel rooms are bugged. To prove this... on your next stay try this... Plan with your partner to start speaking of your plotting to burn the place to the ground upon arrival to your room. Management WILL be knocking on your door within minutes . Fun to watch them fumble with a reason for disturbing you as they figure out that you are on to them. Never fails !

    I know what part you are talking about haha. I read The Shining during the beginning of the new year and I made a mistake by reading super late and after reading that part I went to bed and had a nightmare about it. Excellent review I enjoy your videos, hopefully you can review more Stephen King books. :)

    Hi! Well I’m starting to try to read Stephen King’s novel and I’m stuck between buying “The Shining” or “IT” and I don’t know what to pick between as my first Stephen King’s novel to read. I need your help whether I should buy “The Shining” or “IT”?

    • @EmilyCait
      @EmilyCait  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a tough choice. I am inclined to recommend IT, despite it being a brick of a novel, for two reasons. One: the new film adaptation! The second part of the film adaptation is coming out soon so there will be lots of hype around it and it will be fun to be a part of that. Two: I think the story is more fast-paced and interesting with the character relationships.
      I love The Shining. But it's definitely a slow burn. And it's a quieter, more domestic story, if that makes sense?
      I hope that helps. :)

    "That moment", as you put it, is superb; I felt the same when I read this for the first time. Likewise with the elevator, when Wendy is becoming tuned in, and of course, the chase! Chills. One of King's best moments is being able to write a scene that is frightening, allegorical and moving all at once, in the final confrontation with Danny. Superb.

    @leakyycauldronn1092 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I really enjoyed this book but it didn't scare me at all. I think there was some chilling moments but nothing to actually make me afraid. I think the book would have satisfied me more if Jack's motive to harm his family was from his abusive tendencies combined with the isolation of the hotel. I think reading about a man slowly becoming homicidal would be more interesting than ghosts essentially just possessing him.

    • @JH-qy8no
      @JH-qy8no 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what happened. Ghosts are your memories-good or bad. Jack was possessed by his memories.

    • @nebula1923
      @nebula1923 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing was that the hotel was able to take control of jack because he was the weak link. He was the most unstable one struggling with his own abusive past, the one time where he abused his son and his failing marriage, and his addiction to alcohol. The book was about him slowly becoming more angry and homicidal toward his family because he felt that they were trying to take everything from him - his job and new start at the overlook

    @taylortea3429 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I did a book report on the shining for school. Definitely my favourite book. What I love the most about it is how the hotel is a character of its self. It doesn’t really feel like a setting, more like a character or antagonist

  • @parker9588
    @parker9588 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice review, for me it did get to the point where it was "too much" and was no longer believable or scary, it was the hedge animals that did it for me, up to that point I could believe the hotel was making the characters hurt themselves and each other, but as soon as it became apparent the ghosts and hedge animals were real it felt like an episode of Scooby-doo.

    I am the one who requested the video months ago. I like your review especially the point that the hotel is a space between private and public ("twilight" space, I would say). I would not say The Shining is my favourite book by Stephen King (which is 11/22/63, I started reading Stephen King when I was over 20 so I was affected by those physical thrills at a lesser extent than psychological fear). I am looking forward to your review of Dr Sleep, a book of Stephen King that I almost dislike (great that I picked up Mr Mercedes afterwards).
    Continue with your review videos. Cheers.

    • @EmilyCait
      @EmilyCait  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Siuon Chan Excellent! I'm glad that you liked my review. I'm sorry it took so long to review The Shining. :P
      "Twilight space" is a nice way of describing the blur between public and private spaces. I can see how me reading a lot of King's "classic" "scary" books as a kid might have really shaped my view of them. As an adult, I think I enjoy the King books that mess with me psychologically a lot more than the thought of 'monsters' out in the world.
      Was Dr Sleep your first King novel?

    Hi Emily, nice review! I love The Shining, it's one of my favorite Stephen King novels. My top three favorites would probably be The Shining, Carrie and Misery. I can't help but wonder if the Room 217 scene that gave you goosebumps is the same scene that scared the crap out of me. I first read The Shining back in 1988 when I was 14 years old (God, I feel old) and one night in particular I was home alone, sitting in my bedroom, reading the part where (uh, don't wanna spoil) Jack goes to Room 217 to investigate...something...and, man, that scene absolutely terrified me! Because it was so subtle yet creepy! Like a tarantula slowly crawling on you but it doesn't bite you or anything. It just crawls on you for a minute while you're too scared to move. That's how I felt reading that scene. Whew! I thought I was such a big boy at 14, but on that night I was so freaking scared! Lol!

    • @EmilyCait
      @EmilyCait  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ricardo Rivera I'm glad I'm not the only one that was freaked out by the Room 217 scene! :P I love when a novel actually scares me. Not a lot does in writing, so it's always fun to find something like the Shining.

    Right off the bat, I don't think that this book is the story of Jack Torrence in totality. Danny seems to be the protagonist for the most part, and a lot of the story revolves around the boy as a central theme.

    Halfway through Doctor Sleep now, The Shining was the scariest book I’ve ever read, like it got to me towards the end where everything started happening. Hello again Emily, I have just finished The Shining and yes I thought it was a great read. As it was one Stephen Kings' earlier books and still developing as a writer I found many passages to be overly descriptive which to me stalled the narrative at times. Otherwise still very impressive.

    One of my favourite books I have read it in English I have seen the whining with Jack Nicholson though it was much different from the book the movie is epic with great performances and scenes and the TV series was good too very close to the plot of the book I hope Dr sleep is as good as the shining

    Is the book and film the same I seen the film just wondering if the book has different moments in there

    • @EmilyCait
      @EmilyCait  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The film takes a lot of liberties. It's definitely its own thing. I'd recommend reading the book if you liked the themes explored in the film. You'll find some surprises in there for sure.

    I have never watched the film or red the book, which one shall i start with first.....?

    • @EmilyCait
      @EmilyCait  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The book and film adaptations are pretty different. I really enjoyed starting with the book and then watching the film. (But because they are pretty different, consuming one before the other won't really spoil anything.)

    • @catherineelizabethhallahan9446
      @catherineelizabethhallahan9446 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually think its better to read the book and then maybe watch the film afterwards because then you can see if the film is any different to the book! :) Which i hate because then when you read a certain book and then the film comes out, then they change it around a bit, and your like 'why did they change that part or this film'. Its kinda annoying! lol I bought IT last weekend because iv'e heard so much great reviews about the book. I haven't started it yet, i have loads of other books to read!! But IT is so huge!! lol :)

    do you know if the twins are in the novel?

    • @EmilyCait
      @EmilyCait  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure the Grady twins are only in Kubrick's adaptation.

    • @mollygodlewski
      @mollygodlewski 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are, but aren’t part of the main plot. They don’t play as big a roll as they do in the movie. Grady plays pretty much the same roll as he does in the movie. The girls are pretty much just mentioned in passing.

    Great review Emily! I have read both The Shining and Doctor Sleep and I agree about shining being more believable in TS. Doctor Sleep just seemed like shining was way too easy and convenient to use and harness. Everything about Doctor Sleep felt way too convenient but I did enjoy getting back into that story and to revisit the characters. I look forward to your DS review! I am currently reading The Stand after finishing Eyes of the Dragon (which I really enjoyed) and like IT, this is a super long one.

    • @EmilyCait

      Joshua Marsella Thanks Joshua! The Stand is one of those King novels that I know I have to read, but I'm intimidated by the size at the moment. With thesis stuff I find it hard to read what I want sometimes, but one day I definitely hope to read The Stand :P

      I hear that Emily, I have been reading it a while and only 33% through it. I started Mr Mercedes a few nights ago and I am already 30% through it. It is a huge book though but so far I am enjoying it! I'm also reading the uncut version which is considerably longer than the original. :)
