    Great DIY video....on how to burn your house down! You can NOT encapsulate a non-IC recessed luminaire fixture. You trap heat which can pyrolize surrounding combustibles and ignite. The simple solution is cheap, quick and easy: replace all your cans with ICAT fixtures. These are Insulation Contact Air-Tight rated. You can pick up 6 for less than $60 at your home center. Get a licensed electrician to swap them out. These come with a weatherized trim to meet the code requirement for

    What about an IC box that is drafty but no access from above? (i.e. no attic above). I'm thinking about insulating with foam board and sealing the box itself from underneath, and then going to an LED bulb to reduce heat generated. Any input would be appreciated.

    I have this issue in my Finished garage. Can Lights and I get some mold coming thru sheet rock...near the lights...I imagine condensation issue because of light gaps...but I have no access to above the ceiling...is there a way I can insulate of fix the issue from below...instead of above?

    If you completely cover the fixture, How does the heat escape from the lightbulb so the thermal switch doesn't get damaged?

    • @kwally6151

      Its been a year and couldn't find the answer. So.... I would replace my can lightings with IC rating ones. Then you can completly cover the unit with insulation. The good things is that modern homes already have IC can lights

      @halo37253 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are not running LED lighting by now, it is time to switch. These older cans take to LED just fine. These non IC ratings are for in contact, the cover shown does not contact fixture what so ever and the material it is made out of will handle temps well above what the highest wattage lightbulb is capable of putting out....
      Considering the amount of old 1950's dual socket light fixtures I've torn out running 100w incandescent bulbs, I wouldn't worry about these. No point on wasting money on a certification when you can just learn the science. Also if you want to bring up halogen, just because something makes a lot of heat in a tiny space doesn't mean it is a lot of heat. 25watts of heat is still 25 watts of heat. 25watts of heat in a 1" space is a lot more than in 8" of space. And just because something goes hot does mean it is dangerous, a metal acting as a heatsink being hot is doing its job, even at 125f.
      I'd never recommend any type of can light when thin recessed lights now exist and are nearly air tight from the get go.

      @@halo37253 so to summarize, put in LED bulbs and it's ok to use that tenmat light cover fixture and seal? Because my 1940s house would love to know

      Can light venting was for 90 to 150 watt bulbs which he mentions run at 380F. LED are 10 watt and don't need venting and the conversion is about 104F.

    That can light cover is really easy solution but what if you don't have an attic and you can't get to it. How can you deal it from the inside of the house? Caulk? Will that catch on fire or melt causing damage?

    The can light wasn’t actually cold. The IR camera falsely assigns it a cold color because of the low emissivity of the metal and glass vs the surrounding drywall. The camera was probably set to a high emissivity level. Great videos.

  • @AlanW
    @AlanW 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The Tenmat covers are actually only for making the lights IC safe, they are not an air sealing. You will need to find a way to stop air flow as well.

    Good presentation, makes sense. The only issue I see is I put wood decking in the attic, over the 2x6 stringers. The can lights I bought are specicically made for this- they are about 5 3/4in tall.
    It appears these covers are much taller than 6in. I'd hate to have to cut 12 huge holes in the deck..

  • @deee4705
    @deee4705 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I noticed in every video I watched nobody ever talks about the type of spray foam or sealant (brand or fire/mold/water resistant). This should be an important talking point being that you are using a fire retardant cover but not fire retardant foam. Some say it's not in direct contact but the heat does come in contact with the foam/sealant when the gaps are filled.
    For those that care, pay attention to warranty on the foam/sealant. I found both have little to no warranty and some don't accept any responsibility even if their product fails. Some have a 1.5 year warranty. I'm a do it yourselfer that has done all my own research and found the following, DAP brand has a "Fire Block" spray foam and caulk which I find lacking in product warranty. There is 1 DAP product that I chose to use on my electrical outlets , HIGH TEMP 100% RTV SILICONE SEALANT. The 10.3 fl. oz. caulk tube has a red tip and it is hard to find, even in my major city, but I did find a place that will special order it at $9.99 a tube. Again, I'm no spokesperson but I will not go cheap when it comes to my families safety even though I'm a penny pincher.

      Just had an energy audit done. Lots of issues. I had 2 LED lights installed that are suppose to be air tight. Well not quite. The auditor told me to spray foam around the edging. Then later am having insulation blown in and it will go over top. They are IC Rated.

    • @pearlperlitavenegas2023
      @pearlperlitavenegas2023 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You first need to seal with foam or polyurethane caulk & then insulate. Remember insulation alone does not stop air leaks. He mentions that in other videos

  • @cpkelley617
    @cpkelley617 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @dr. energy saver What can you do to insulate and recessed lights from in the room below? I have a small dining room with 6 or so can lights that need insulated but there is no attic so there is no access to the space above them. I also need to protect the lights from blown in cellulose insulation that I would like to add soon. Thanks!

    • @crimsonsamuraiftw
      @crimsonsamuraiftw 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +cpkelley617 For the trim ring you could use foam padding, much like for electrical outlets. For the interior of the light I would probably use foil tape (the same kind they use on ductwork.)

    • @cleanairdude
      @cleanairdude 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +crimsonsamuraiftw be careful about putting tape on the can itself, the manufacturer has put the "holes" in the can for it to "breathe" and by installing tape on the can you have "altered" it. If the can light were to catch on fire you could be held responsible or your homeowners insurance may not cover it because of this alteration to it. Here in Louisiana we can not cover the cans with the hats or boxes anymore we have to use the seal tight trim ring kits.

    What is the point of using the rockwool caps if you are going to seal them with highly flammable spray foam?

    • @joeydelmarsjr.646
      @joeydelmarsjr.646 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      jjmarz1001 what you mean whats the point. The rock wall is touching the light can its an insulator and the foam is not going to go up in flames its not in direct contract and once its cured and dried its safe

    • @palmtree5544
      @palmtree5544 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the point is that the inverted flower pot is going to trap all of the heat and the foam is in direct contact with the heat. If it is not in direct contact, why even bother using foam. Wonder what the fire marshal thinks about these pots. Oh, and since the temperature is going to rise drastically in the pot, what happens to the overheat device for the lamp.

    Very informative video highlighting a major and often overlooked problem in homes.
    We created a solution to easily address this very problem. Our product is a unique FSK-faced insulating can light cover that ships and stores flat, a huge advantage for bigger installs. Our Universal series has a passive venting system which lets Non-IC cans be safely and efficiently insulated with no fire hazard.
    There's a few brief videos on our channel about the product.

What about those? What if your only access point is from below? You should have made that video 30 seconds long.
