  • Another year, another RAM. Unlike with the 2020s, this year FCA has added some new tech to their full-size pickup truck. We go over what's new for 2021 with the RAM 1500 Limited!
    PRN T-Shirts now available! Check out our original designs here: teespring.com/stores/prn
    We've had the pleasure of featuring a number of RAM 1500 pickup trucks on TestDrive over the years, including the 2019 RAM 1500 Limited 4x4 we featured about 2 years ago. We drove a 2020 RAM 1500 Rebel to talk about the EcoDiesel engine, and now we're looking at the changes coming in 2021. Our 2021 RAM 1500 Limited 4x4 comes well equipped with a number of packages and options that most people would be looking at for this price. Included is the Patriot Blue Pearl paint and Indigo/White interior leather.
    We go over the changes for 2021 including the optional colour Head-up Dsiplay and 9.2" video rearview mirror available based on packaging. With this truck we also talk about the 5.7L Hemi V8 engine with eTorque, a mild-hybrid system to help with auto stop/start and gear shifting.
    We take our 2021 RAM 1500 Limited on a winter road test to talk about how this pickup truck performs in light snow, why you need good winter tires, and what you need to know if you're in the market for a truck like this.

    The want with this one is SO STRONG. Beautiful color. I have looked at the Laramie versions of these with that sand and mountain interior and it is absolutely amazing how good the interior of these things are. The ride is really no joke, it is better than any luxury car. They really shame Silverado interior. I probably take the version without eTorque because I just like basic naturally aspirated engines. Other than that, magnificent. Sorry for you all's roads, you have to deal with a lot north of the border.

    Good review…. Will soon be in a 23 limited. Currently in a JGC summit, and the drivetrain is great. In snow mode, it’s 50/50, and has tons of control, hard to even fishtail.
    How is the ram awd system? It doesn’t have selectable modes, and the transfer case uses electro clutches. Can I expect a similar driving experience? Or not even close? In the Midwest, only have a few weeks of snow.

    I am one of those few who would not want a sun roof. There are maybe, what, 3 days out of the year you can actually use it. Not all winter, and winter lasts 7 months. Summer, A/C on, no need for sun roof. I would rather the extra headroom instead.
    *On a side note, I was dismayed at the time I was shopping for a used car, how many cars had the panoramic sunroof but no safety tech-Blind Spot Monitoring, Back Up Assist, etc.
    *edit

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Manufacturers want to get people into the showroom with access to pano roofs over actual safety tech. I think FCA is the only group that actually makes the sunroof optional across their fleet rather than being tied to a specific trim.

    • @drmitofit2673
      @drmitofit2673 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree on the downsides of sunroofs. Adds top heavy weight, lowers headroom, not meant to prevent water intrusion but rather channel the water internally, etc. Had one car with an annoying unsolvable sunroof rattle. My traded in 2011 F-150 Platinum had a sunroof which I thought was great for the first week when I used it. Later I read that the plastic gear mechanism was prone to break and very expensive to repair, so I avoided using it even more. So many better things you can buy for $1,500.

    Which would be better for Virginia slow snow driving? A RAM 1500 5.7L eTorque 4x4 or a Jeep Cherokee 3.2L FWD? The Cherokee would seem to have the edge with a lower center of gravity and weight over the drive wheels.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll definitely have better fuel economy with the Cherokee, both because of the drivetrain but also the overall weight is lower. It depends on what you want out of your vehicle though. Personally I'm not a huge fan of pickup trucks in the snow, going slow is ok but even with good winter tires you don't get enough traction on the rear tires of a truck when you're driving unloaded.

    Seriously considering this truck. I Love the Patriot Blue exterior. The Limited blue/frost Interior is luxury, but seems a bit...cold? I am leaning towards the Longhorn trim level with the black / New Saddle brown seats and trim. Was looking at a Canyon Denali, but this is, as they say, next level. Mild hybrid is a misnomer. It's not a hybrid in any way. It's an assist system.

    • @drmitofit2673
      @drmitofit2673 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It regenerates energy from braking and shifting and adds motive force and torque at low end, start stop, and cylinder deactivation situations, so it is a mild hybrid system. Can't run soley on electrical power so it is not a full hybrid.

    • @boonelipsey5393
      @boonelipsey5393 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drmitofit2673 cylinder deactivation is a separate system not related to E torque. It does help with shift points by preloading the crank during shifting. And yes it regens with brakes. But it only adds torque for the first 1-1/2 turns if the rear wheel. Like I said. Mild hybrid is a misnomer.

    • @drmitofit2673

      @@boonelipsey5393 You are wrong. The eTorque system is integrated with the cylinder deactivation system allowing the V8 to remain longer in 4 cylinder mode when small amounts of acceleration are needed at highway speeds, as stated by the engineer who designed eTorque. Since you don't really know the facts, you are in no position to quibble about semantics.

    • @boonelipsey5393
      @boonelipsey5393 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had E torque. Great system. Wish I still had it. But it's not a hybrid. Mild or otherwise. May have characteristics of a hybrid. But not a hybrid. Just like fender flares doesn't make a car a wide body. FCA likes making claims that are not accurate.

    • @drmitofit2673
      @drmitofit2673 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boonelipsey5393 Since you insist in quibbling on the wrong side of a semantic argument, I feel obligated to correct your erroneous spelling. It's eTorque not E torque. Think iPhone. If you had done a mere modicum of research on the topic, you should know this. I looked up Toyota's definition of mild hybrid which is an electrical motor that supports the engine during acceleration and cruising but cannot drive the vehicle independently (i.e. full hybrid). The eTorque system meets this definition. It may be on the very mild end of the spectrum, but it is still a mild hybrid, has many advantages, takes over stop start instead of using and wearing the 12 volt starter, replaces the alternator to charge the 12 volt battery, captures "free" regenerative energy from braking and upshifting, prolongs transmission life by smoothing shifts, and is a worthwhile upgrade. It is a very good application of (mild) hybrid technology.
