I don't think Spidey NEEDS to glide, but if it showcases Peter's nerdy aspects, I'm all for it. Part of what made Spidey special was that his enemies expected the powers of Spider-Man, but never the brain of Peter Parker.
I always thought that maybe the "web wings" were more like training wheels, a way to give him more drag so he would have more control while web slinging. As he got older and better at the whole web swinging, he got rid of them.
in spider-man 2099, Miguel O'Hara (the spider-man of the year 2099) had a web cape that went half way to three fourths the way down his back and he used that for gliding. I think the comic said that it can slow him to a point where he can land from extremely high heights without getting hurt.
joshthenesnerd11 yeah, he says they allow him to catch "updrafts". though they are made from an actual torn up glider from earlier in the story, and Miguel seems to think of them simply by his wit and the fact that he happens to have the material, without relating it to the spider-man of the "heroic age". (see: spider-man 2099 classic, vol 1, pages 45-47)
I think a practical use for those Web Wings would be to create drag and cushion his typical high landing. Yes he can make a web parachute, but I mean for just regular high landings.
I think it's great that they have some aspects of the original costume in the movie, like they did with the Iron Man movies , showing the progress from the first outfit to the most developed version of it.
I like the idea of the "web wings," but not the idea of gliding; Spidey using web-slinging for transportation is too iconic, and him having the ability to glide would take away from that too much.

He can spread them out if he has to slow down or really pitch a hard angle or just keep them tucked for speed. This is pure 100% uncut headcanon, but that was how I justified the web wings to myself.

I know somehow it helps (not sure exactly) and i want to help nerdsync out. because youre probs the most unique of the comic book youtubers out there. longtime fan, and longtime lover
I believe it was in Amazing Spider-Man either #1 or #2, when Spider-Man actually used his web fluid to create literal wings for himself while he was doing battle with the Fantastic Four. This also shows that the underarm webbing is useless, because he would have had to create actual web wings if the underarm webbing actually did something.
2;56 So, ostensibly, the spider-wings are the nipples of the costume, in that they're functional on biologically female Spider-people, but not biologically male ones? :D
wouldn't webbing under his arms slow him down when swinging though? I mean if they are used to glide (slow down the fall) then it also means it would slow him down while swinging right?
I'd assume if there was any noticeable drag, Pete would swing in a way that negated it. I mean, most of his swings would put the webbing into the line of resistance or against his body. Alternatively, he might actually use this all to his advantage. We already seem him spread his arms and legs to slow his falls sometimes.
It also seems like things under his arms would decrease his arm maneuverability, like wouldn't it stop him from stretching his arm out all the way? I don't know maybe I'm dumb but that's what it seems like.
werewolf914 Given how strong Spider-Man is, I doubt it would impact him significantly if it was weak enough to not rip his costume every time he stretches his arms out.
I remember the first time it occurred to me that the belt and web-shooters should be visible under the skintight spandex, and it was like a small part of my world crashing down. realizing artists are just taught how to draw nude muscular bodies and basically just do that over and over and over for a living, with as few modifications to that as possible.
Ive always believed the webbing was support/anchoring for his upper arm so when spiderman swings around the shear tension of his webs and the immediate changes in velocity didnt yank out his arm from his socket.
i always just assumed he used them to control his speed when falling. not really gliding but if he needs to be faster he could tuck his arms in and if he needed to be slower to make a particular stunt he could hold his arm out to have more drag. or even he could hold only 1 arm out and have drag on one side to make his twist in mid-air so he could land on a wall properly.
the iron spider glided with web wings that popped out if I remember correctly and since stark is probably ginna make his new costume itll make some sense
In the comics it might of not been used to glide but in the animated cartoons it has. I remember in one episode of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (I believe), Spider-Man is about to land into Central Park and he is talking to himself and he comes to the conclusion to use his web wings he installed into the suit. And for about two seconds as Spider-Man falls off screen we see the web wings.
Ah Spider-Man and his Amazing friends. A time where they made superhero shows so easily to mock. My favorite line from that show is when Spidey is talking to Video Game Man. "Hit them with a hot and cold ray!" "I don't have a hot and cold ray." "Have you ever tried?" *VG-Man shoots hot and cold ray.*
Classic Superhero cartoons were weird. Theirs an episode of 60s Spider-Man where Spidey starts fighting a native tribal guy and treats like like a pet. "Easy their, boy"
I think Spidey gliding as well as web-swinging around NYC will ad a new flavor to the aesthetic of how he gets around the city, and i cant wait to see how they look
While flying it kinda makes me remind of Spider-Man Unlimited cartoon (didn't he fly on that ?) and it can make for some cool sequences .... the whole point of Vulture being a challenging villain is because Spidey can't fly or glide or whatever
I think the new movie will have him gliding, but realistically the amount of lift they would give would be less than a wingsuit, which has more surface area. So the underarm webbing's purpose would be more for creating more drag to stay airborne slightly longer for more agile web-swinging.
James Zetterman Really? because when peter first saw the suit he asked if it could fly or shoot lasers. to which tony replied no.read road to civil war if your curious.
I'm guessing the Web wings are just due to leakage of either the Web shooters or leakage of his organic webbing. that or sometimes when he scratches his armpits he accidentally shooting them and creates the wings. sometimes he realizes ad and takes them off. other times he doesnt. either due to having to rush to save a life or he forgets
Finally! This has been one of my biggest gripes with the Spider-man seen in the movies and many other forms of Spidey entertainment. I am excited to see what he looks like!
The process is called Ballooning. In 2012 and 2015 we had millions of spiders use webbing to glide on the wind to the point that when they landed the webs were so spread out and visible the ground looked like it was covered on snow. Interesting point I also saw in one of Scott's Videos quite some time ago was that he finds it difficult to believe it snows down here in Australia. It does indeed snow. If you think about it as if Australia is pretty much right next to Antarctica if that makes it easier to process. Thanks for the awesome videos.
Like they said, the comics show us Spidey using webbing as a parachute. If the Marvel universe allows that to work, why couldn't thin membranes over the armpits help glide? Go search for videos of people in flying squirrel suits, they already exist and work in the real world! Maybe the web design is just printed onto something like that rather than being a worthless hole-filled design like you're imagining.
This is true, but that's kind of what I was getting at there. In the comics, it's drawn with a webbing pattern and some people think that means "net", but I'm saying it's just as easily a membrane with a webbing design printed on it.
I always loved the web wings, I felt like the web wings were apart of the spider web that spider-man's spider logo sat upon. Does that make sense? Hopefully I got that across properly. ^-^;
I remember as a kid some old spider-man cartoons show him gliding with his underarm webs. That's also how I've been explaining it to people for decades now when people ask me about it. But I've never really seen it used that way in the actual comic books.
Personally, what I think would be cool is if he used them to guild, only to have the web pits break in the middle of the flight...and invented web slinging on the fly to just save his life. BTW, why does Spider-man fear falling a few stories in the comics, movies and everything else...but than has no problem getting hit by someone that makes him fly 5 city blocks?
undecidedgenius It's just because of peds, he doesn't want to hurt them, or maybe he doesn't want get knocked unconscious by smashing his head off of a metal pole.
Yo that is a SICK idea man! Honest. Like when he first gets his powers he decides he wants to fly (or at least glide), fails mid flight and reaches out in desperation and slings a web on a building swinging him to safety. Thus, The Human Spider is born.
Fantasy Connect You know, I bet it makes his spider-sense go nuts with the ground rushing towards him like that when he's fairly close to smashing into the concrete, especially if it is unexpected-like, say, _he runs out of web fluid_?
I don't really care for the web wings and I kinda hate them aesthetic wise, so no, I don't really want to see them in Homecoming unless they make it look cool
It's always nice to see something new with the film costume. It helps differentiate them from each other without veering too far away from the designs the general public are use to seeing.
I've always thought that if I made a Batman/Spiderman comic batman would make Spider-Man a suit where the webbing would allow him to glide. This is like my dream come true
maybe put a spoiler warning in the start of the video because i wanted to go into spider man homecoming blind but it's okay as long as you learn from your mistakes
NerdSync oh sorry i didn't notice cause I'm on mobile and i tapped on the video cause i was excited to see you cover my favourite superhero. so in turn i was the one to learn from my mistakes
although it saying "Spider-Man Homecoming" is obscured due to the long title of the video making you not notice it unless you read the whole title after you click the video
Another amazing video Scott. I am very exited to see new use for web wings in the movie, as much as I'm exited for the rest of the movie (witch is a lot).
This is pretty mindblowing, as I've always just assumed they were for gliding. But that's some pretty compelling evidence for it just being part of the costume, especially since he never used them.
Something interesting also is that in Amazing Spider-Man issue 8 in the Human Torch story, he uses is webbing to extend these wings to the point where he does glide a little bit!
"Mr Stark this new costume is fantastic, but I can't figure out what the webbing down here under my arms is supposed to do." "What do you mean?" "I mean is it supposed to make my fly, or glide? Maybe a parachute or something?" ".....uuuuummmm..... I forget. Stylistic choice maybe? Who cares? Is it getting in your way? No? Fine then let's move on."
I remember in one of the animated Spiderman series (ironically one where he gets beat up by Vulture pretty bad) the web-wings were used to glide a bit but poorly and not for long. Hence why he switched to swinging like Tarzan as his main mode of transport. He kinda used them in combination to actually transverse to city properly.
The webbing under the arms is probably a way to increase surface area, but not to glide like on wings. It most likely just reduces his rate of decent a bit to let him control trajectory. As he got better at web slinging, he would learn to aim his body without the aid of the "wings", so they don't need to be a permanent pert of his costume, being added on the fly (if you will) with standard webbing in extreme cases... thus they appear and vanish depending on the artist. My guess it that Tony Stark doesn't know Peter's skill as Spider-Man, and Peter is still learning, so the Start suit Tony gives him will have the "wings" partially because his analysis would show a need for some stabilization in the web-swings. Peter is smart enough to take the basic idea and learn new ways to use the tech and expand on it to actually glide on updrafts in the city.
In my headcanon, they were used for when he was swinging through the city. He could use them to slow himself down to make sharp turns or to speed himself up by catching the wind.
Though the web wings being used as a gliding tool is the widely accepted use, the main purpose of the web wings is to decrease Spider-Man's momentum (with all of his strength that can lift a car generated into a single swing) so that he can minimize aerodynamicity and maneuver easily while swinging through the convoluted Manhattan skyline. If speed is needed, he can retract the web wings or simply close his armpits.
I think spideman glidng is a cool concept. reminds me of the arkham city game where swapping between grappling and gliding is the best way to move about the city
In original Spider-Man series, number 8, he briefly battles the Fantastic Four, and at one point makes web-wings which are probably 8-10 feet wide. That's the only instance I can remember when he uses them to fly.
I've always liked the armpit webbings. I also always loved the flying squirrel glider concept Nightwing has used on occasion. I'm down for it as long as the "gliding" is nothing like Batman's gliding in the Nolan films where he's basically just flying. If it was Nightwing I'd be down for improbable flying-gliding, but Spidey shouldn't be able to essentially fly around if his webshooters were to fail.
Hearing Spidey costume be actually a wrestling costume instead being a superhero costume well makes sense imo idk why now the costume looks like a wrestling costume
I remember in Spectacular Spider-Man, when he had the symbiote, it used the underarm webs to hit someone and that's the only time those have ever been used
I'm certainly interested in seeing how they do the under-the-arm webs, but I personally don't quite see how they could hold air? I mean, they've only ever looked like one layer of webbing, so it shouldn't be anymore useful in that regard than a net would be as a hang glider.
The reason he has underarm webs is because puberty hit him pretty hard.

i know thats not the most interesting thing to add or comment, but my goal is to comment on every nerdsync video. no matter how dumb or trivial it is, i want to do it. ya'll deserve the support. even if its just "this video isnt the worst thing. i once had someone nail my sandwich to a doorframe". I know somehow it helps (not sure exactly) and i want to help nerdsync out. because youre probs the most unique of the comic book youtubers out there. longtime fan, and longtime lover
This was released on my birthday best birthday gift ever
just wanted to tell you, this is probably my favortie channel. thanks for all your videos and fun comic information. you are the best
There is no way those underarm webbings will even be able to glide, the air will go straight thru them ;D
Odωεя The denser it is the better
Odwer
It could just be a web pattern
I believe it was in Amazing Spider-Man either #1 or #2, when Spider-Man actually used his web fluid to create literal wings for himself while he was doing battle with the Fantastic Four. This also shows that the underarm webbing is useless, because he would have had to create actual web wings if the underarm webbing actually did something.
2;56 So, ostensibly, the spider-wings are the nipples of the costume, in that they're functional on biologically female Spider-people, but not biologically male ones? :D
That comment needs more likes.
😂😂😂
Spiderman gliding around as a supplement to his web slinging? Sounds awesome. Can't wait.
wouldn't webbing under his arms slow him down when swinging though? I mean if they are used to glide (slow down the fall) then it also means it would slow him down while swinging right?
I'd assume if there was any noticeable drag, Pete would swing in a way that negated it. I mean, most of his swings would put the webbing into the line of resistance or against his body. Alternatively, he might actually use this all to his advantage. We already seem him spread his arms and legs to slow his falls sometimes.
It also seems like things under his arms would decrease his arm maneuverability, like wouldn't it stop him from stretching his arm out all the way? I don't know maybe I'm dumb but that's what it seems like.
it depend on the tension of the web, in this case, it could be a more elastic and so easier to stretch.
werewolf914 Given how strong Spider-Man is, I doubt it would impact him significantly if it was weak enough to not rip his costume every time he stretches his arms out.
I remember the first time it occurred to me that the belt and web-shooters should be visible under the skintight spandex, and it was like a small part of my world crashing down. realizing artists are just taught how to draw nude muscular bodies and basically just do that over and over and over for a living, with as few modifications to that as possible.
He falls slower, thus he gets more time to react when he is swinging around the city, he can look at more places in more time
He doesn't need to look around when he is web-swinging. His Spider-Sense takes care of letting him know where to shoot his web to
BobbyS95 I thought it just alerts him from danger
it's pretty dangerous when you might fall from 300 ft going 60 mph
VVHunter please sub to my channel
Ive always believed the webbing was support/anchoring for his upper arm so when spiderman swings around the shear tension of his webs and the immediate changes in velocity didnt yank out his arm from his socket.
i always just assumed he used them to control his speed when falling. not really gliding but if he needs to be faster he could tuck his arms in and if he needed to be slower to make a particular stunt he could hold his arm out to have more drag. or even he could hold only 1 arm out and have drag on one side to make his twist in mid-air so he could land on a wall properly.
I've ALWAYS thought that his underarm webs were to help him glide through the air. I thought they just never specified it
spider-man did use Underarm Webbing for gliding in the ultimed spider-man cartoon
sorry for my grammer
Antony vd ve And also in 1981 cartoon😊😄😀😃😉👍✌💪
Your grammar is fine
It’s your spelling that needs work (assuming that that wasn’t a typo)
Not judging just felt the need to point that out
0:59 Is that a giant Spiderman terrorizing New York?
the iron spider glided with web wings that popped out if I remember correctly and since stark is probably ginna make his new costume itll make some sense
Michael LaBonte itll make total..Spider Sense!
Eddy Munster yeah I thought it was a web-tastic idea
Underarm webbing are attached to the inside of the costume to help get rid of the pit sweat.
Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends XD used to be on at 5 am for me i remember it well
Ah Spider-Man and his Amazing friends. A time where they made superhero shows so easily to mock. My favorite line from that show is when Spidey is talking to Video Game Man.
"Hit them with a hot and cold ray!"
"I don't have a hot and cold ray."
"Have you ever tried?"
*VG-Man shoots hot and cold ray.*
I mean, yeah, that's a pretty logical conclusion to come to about super powers.
Those cartoon shows I hated back then let's finish our sentence first then react to disarm bomb at five seconds left
While flying it kinda makes me remind of Spider-Man Unlimited cartoon (didn't he fly on that ?) and it can make for some cool sequences .... the whole point of Vulture being a challenging villain is because Spidey can't fly or glide or whatever
he did.
I think the new movie will have him gliding, but realistically the amount of lift they would give would be less than a wingsuit, which has more surface area. So the underarm webbing's purpose would be more for creating more drag to stay airborne slightly longer for more agile web-swinging.
if I'm correct the iron spider costume had gliding abilities.
Leo Decap Pretty sure that sir was capable of actual flight...
James Zetterman Really? because when peter first saw the suit he asked if it could fly or shoot lasers. to which tony replied no.read road to civil war if your curious.
yes it could glide and i do have a really faint memory of small boosters in the feet but that may be from some other costume or something
even if they aren't large enough to enable gliding, one could argue that they help him steer his body around while falling.
Phil V
falling.... WITH STYLE!
Hannibus 42 that sounds familiar. what is that from?
Phil V
Toy Story!
I'm guessing the Web wings are just due to leakage of either the Web shooters or leakage of his organic webbing. that or sometimes when he scratches his armpits he accidentally shooting them and creates the wings. sometimes he realizes ad and takes them off. other times he doesnt. either due to having to rush to save a life or he forgets
or ............ cause comics
Finally! This has been one of my biggest gripes with the Spider-man seen in the movies and many other forms of Spidey entertainment. I am excited to see what he looks like!
i feel like its more for air resistance to have a more controlled fall should he need it
The process is called Ballooning.
The web wings are almost 100% holes, they're not going to let you glide...
Eh, at least Spidey looks cooler while falling XD
+Egonis Gaut falling with style
Like they said, the comics show us Spidey using webbing as a parachute. If the Marvel universe allows that to work, why couldn't thin membranes over the armpits help glide? Go search for videos of people in flying squirrel suits, they already exist and work in the real world! Maybe the web design is just printed onto something like that rather than being a worthless hole-filled design like you're imagining.
Abject Permanence There's a pretty substantial difference between a membrane and a net
This is true, but that's kind of what I was getting at there. In the comics, it's drawn with a webbing pattern and some people think that means "net", but I'm saying it's just as easily a membrane with a webbing design printed on it.
This is my favorite format of your videos.
I always loved the web wings, I felt like the web wings were apart of the spider web that spider-man's spider logo sat upon.
Does that make sense? Hopefully I got that across properly. ^-^;
BTW, why does Spider-man fear falling a few stories in the comics, movies and everything else...but than has no problem getting hit by someone that makes him fly 5 city blocks?
undecidedgenius
Perhaps, he doesn't want to break the sidewalk?
undecidedgenius It's just because of peds, he doesn't want to hurt them, or maybe he doesn't want get knocked unconscious by smashing his head off of a metal pole.
Yo that is a SICK idea man! Honest.
Like when he first gets his powers he decides he wants to fly (or at least glide), fails mid flight and reaches out in desperation and slings a web on a building swinging him to safety. Thus, The Human Spider is born.
Fantasy Connect
You know, I bet it makes his spider-sense go nuts with the ground rushing towards him like that when he's fairly close to smashing into the concrete, especially if it is unexpected-like, say, _he runs out of web fluid_?
to "guild" ?!?
.... I played guild wars when it first came out, don't remember him... he must have been an NPC in Guild Wars 2
I've always loved the underarm webs and I'm so glad they're going to be in Homecoming!
I don't really care for the web wings and I kinda hate them aesthetic wise, so no, I don't really want to see them in Homecoming unless they make it look cool
It's always nice to see something new with the film costume. It helps differentiate them from each other without veering too far away from the designs the general public are use to seeing.
ITS LOWKEY THE IRON SPIDER SUIT CUZ THAT ALLOWS HIM TO GLIDE
But not fly, shoot repulsor beams, have an AI talk to him and regulate his suit, or any of the cool things that Iron Man suits can do...
I've always thought that if I made a Batman/Spiderman comic batman would make Spider-Man a suit where the webbing would allow him to glide. This is like my dream come true
Just imagine he sweat a lot and his underarm are soak. I would be so sticky...
Spectacular Spider-Man makes me love Spider-Man so much, I’d even love the webbed underarms design. Lol.
maybe put a spoiler warning in the start of the video because i wanted to go into spider man homecoming blind but it's okay as long as you learn from your mistakes
I mean, the video title says "Spider-Man Homecoming" in it so I kinda feel like that's on you?
NerdSync oh sorry i didn't notice cause I'm on mobile and i tapped on the video cause i was excited to see you cover my favourite superhero. so in turn i was the one to learn from my mistakes
No worries, man. Hope you liked the video regardless!
although it saying "Spider-Man Homecoming" is obscured due to the long title of the video making you not notice it unless you read the whole title after you click the video
It's a costume I'm sure they'll have the underarm webs in posters and toys it's unavoidable
Another amazing video Scott. I am very exited to see new use for web wings in the movie, as much as I'm exited for the rest of the movie (witch is a lot).
Who else came here after watching the Spiderman Homecoming teaser?
I would have came here before teaser if I knew video existed
+bat prime woah...
"Mr Stark this new costume is fantastic, but I can't figure out what the webbing down here under my arms is supposed to do."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean is it supposed to make my fly, or glide? Maybe a parachute or something?"
".....uuuuummmm..... I forget. Stylistic choice maybe? Who cares? Is it getting in your way? No? Fine then let's move on."
Just some quick NerdSync love. Always enjoy these videos.
my dude scott is wearing triple layers. damn bro how cold is it
I remember in one of the animated Spiderman series (ironically one where he gets beat up by Vulture pretty bad) the web-wings were used to glide a bit but poorly and not for long.
It just adds more to the character tbh and i feel like its iconic even if its not for a practical use
first the spider- signal now the "web wings" this movie is bringing in a lot of obscure Spider-Man stuff and I'm on board
In my headcanon, they were used for when he was swinging through the city. He could use them to slow himself down to make sharp turns or to speed himself up by catching the wind.
It would be cool to see the Webbing actually have a use. Like how the expressionable eyes help him focus
Love your videos Scott! Keep up the good work!
Even if the underarm webs were only for style, they do add to the costume. I think Peter Parker is a true fashion icon.
Spider-man's web wings are just part of the web backpack that he uses to transport his street clothes.
I think spideman glidng is a cool concept. reminds me of the arkham city game where swapping between grappling and gliding is the best way to move about the city
Peter Parker was one hell of a seamstress to make that outfit in high school.
Honestly it makes sense that he have web wings, some spiders travel through air with a silk webbing parachute
In original Spider-Man series, number 8, he briefly battles the Fantastic Four, and at one point makes web-wings which are probably 8-10 feet wide. That's the only instance I can remember when he uses them to fly.
I guess it makes sense for Spiderman to have the ability to glide short distances in case his web shooters ran out.
I can't wait to see where this goes as a new addition to a character we've seen so many times.
Hearing Spidey costume be actually a wrestling costume instead being a superhero costume well makes sense imo idk why now the costume looks like a wrestling costume
he has glided in the comics before, but from wings he weaved out of his web lines, not his underarm webs
I actually just started to read the original Spider-Man comics and was confused about that stuff, so thx for this.
