I love that this episode was all "sexist stereotypes are bullshit, be yourself", but in a very weird Gravity Falls way. Also, Dipper and Mabel are based on the creator of the show, Alex Hirsch, and his sister Ariel. So of course it's going to have a bit of bias towards Dipper being the better sibling and Mabel being more annoying 😁
Occasionally I'm watching this show and I remember that Alex Hirsch is the only one of the main cast who really attempts to put on a voice for his characters. Dipper? And my appreciation for this episode has increased a whole lot ever since I realized that I'm transgender and had to do some serious critical thinking about gender constructs and the societal expectations surrounding them. It's always nice to see media that highlights that it's all bullshit, and all that really matters is being true to yourself.

I had to buy her stuff from the boys section just to get her things she liked after she cried one Christmas because Corey got all the good things and she got "girl" things. It was actually heartbreaking. The society gender norms can seriously go fuck themselves. Let people wear what they want, act how they want and dress how they want. The season 1 finale does have Stan and Lazy Susan's wedding. But it turns out it was all a plot by her cats to steal the journal. She ends up sacrificing herself to save Stan.

In all seriousness, Mabel can be polarizing. I think even the Fandom have people who don't like her. But I think most siblings, sometimes hurt each other, without meaning to. Also they are 12. Dipper is just more emotionally mature, he still does dum stuff tho
I honestly think the mabel hate is unjustified. Part of the fandom tends to scrutinize mabel's every move but let Dipper off the hook when he messes up (and even try to make it seem like it's somehow mabel's fault). It's a complete double standard.

Not the most exciting episode, but given the subject, I was excited for your reaction to it. Honestly, considering that it's 10 years old, I think this episode has aged better than you could expect. The problem with watching multiple people react to the same show after having watched it multiple times is that some things begin to get mixed up. Some times it get hard to remember who has seen what, and when it happened in the show. Not a spoiler, but notice: Wendy was sitting right next to the lumberjack that won the manliness game, wears the same color of flannel, and has the same hair color.
Grunkle Stan knows Pituitaur because they both pledged at the same fraternity, Kappa Kappa Pi. They used to be best buds, but then they got in a fight over some girl name Estaur and the two haven't spoken since. Gotta say, I was shocked at that reveal when it finally dropped.
I'm dying over their copyright free parody versions of songs. 🤣 Oh yes & if you were wondering on 'masculinity' over here, it's extremely toxic. Men are very insecure about how other men think about them here so often they mold themselves to meet a standard to fit in. Not all guys follow this trait but it's hard to notice quieter people over loud, aggressive, & obnoxious ones. Soo proud of Dipper for making the right choice by saying this is wrong & I don't want any part of it.
The show's final villain is the one-eyed pyramid, who is a sorcerer from the second dimension trying to destroy this planet for having three dimensions. Dipper ultimately defeats him by tricking him into saying his name backward, which sounds weird but makes sense in context.
I like this episode because it criticizes some toxic extremes about some people's idea masculinity, while still understanding that it is perfectly fine for a young man to want to be masculine. You can kinda see where the shift happens. All the stuff that they are doing in the man cave are typical and are okay for men to do. You can see dipper enjoy it, because he hadn't really been in a very masculine space before that. He was enjoying it and it felt natural having friends around him who liked to joke around, play, and challenge each other. The shift came when they then tried to attack the bear for no good reason. Many people would consider this not masculine at all, because your infringing on other people's rights. It's okay to playfully make fun of friends, but to start dictating exactly what they should and shouldn't like is just toxic
One reason among many that I love The Owl House so much more is that Gravity Falls still often relies on the whole, "the worst thing a man or boy can be- A GIRL" humor. Growing up and hearing that the worst case scenario for half the population is to be *like you* has an effect, and so does learning that half the population is lesser than you. And yeah, this episode deconstructs some of the toxic stereotypes, but it still heavily relies on the humor without properly deconstructing it all the time, in both this episode and others.

I saw a headcanon post once about this show that cast Dipper as a trans man, explaining why he and Mabel are nearly identical. I believe it was viewed by Alex Hirsch, but you can take a lot of things that way and I like it as a trans person myself.
This is my favorite episode where nothing huge happens at all. Grunkle Stan is rough around the edges, but is he really such a bad guy? He gives dipper the best life lesson, be your self even if everyone stands against you. Don't let people change you, better yourself. I'm a trans woman who came out after this show and my one major manliness role model had been Captain picard. So I didn't need this lesson at much as people who's role model was the hulk. But it's put so simply and complete. But it's just about being good people. There's no meaningful difference between genders in being a good person.
I'm really looking forward to when you get to the episode where Dipper loses his crush on Wendy after he catches her bursting Robbie's pimples for him, and then spends the next week simping for a sentient tree.

But just because she's 12 doesn't mean everyone should be forced to like her character. Dipper is the same age and is a much more likeable character. I mean if my brother told me he was gonna beat a "manliness" tester with his twig arms I also would have laughed in his face, also he makes fun of how short I am constantly. I get it, I have siblings too and we fight like WW2 but he does nothing but support her and look out for her wellbeing and she constantly makes fun of him. Men are very insecure about how other men think about them here so often they mold themselves to meet a standard to fit in. Not all guys follow this trait but it's hard to notice quieter people over loud, aggressive, & obnoxious ones.

The show's final villain is the one-eyed pyramid, who is a sorcerer from the second dimension trying to destroy this planet for having three dimensions. Dipper ultimately defeats him by tricking him into saying his name backward, which sounds weird but makes sense in context.

I like this episode because it criticizes some toxic extremes about some people's idea masculinity, while still understanding that it is perfectly fine for a young man to want to be masculine. You can kinda see where the shift happens. All the stuff that they are doing in the man cave are typical and are okay for men to do. You can see dipper enjoy it, because he hadn't really been in a very masculine space before that. He was enjoying it and it felt natural having friends around him who liked to joke around, play, and challenge each other. The shift came when they then tried to attack the bear for no good reason. Many people would consider this not masculine at all, because your infringing on other people's rights. It's okay to playfully make fun of friends, but to start dictating exactly what they should and shouldn't like is just toxic

One reason among many that I love The Owl House so much more is that Gravity Falls still often relies on the whole, "the worst thing a man or boy can be- A GIRL" humor.
Growing up and hearing that the worst case scenario for half the population is to be *like you* has an effect, and so does learning that half the population is lesser than you.
And yeah, this episode deconstructs some of the toxic stereotypes, but it still heavily relies on the humor without properly deconstructing it all the time, in both this episode and others.

I saw a headcanon post once about this show that cast Dipper as a trans man, explaining why he and Mabel are nearly identical. I believe it was viewed by Alex Hirsch, but you can take a lot of things that way and I like it as a trans person myself.
This is my favorite episode where nothing huge happens at all. Grunkle Stan is rough around the edges, but is he really such a bad guy? He gives dipper the best life lesson, be your self even if everyone stands against you. Don't let people change you, better yourself.
I'm a trans woman who came out after this show and my one major manliness role model had been Captain picard. So I didn't need this lesson at much as people who's role model was the hulk. But it's put so simply and complete.
But it's just about being good people. There's no meaningful difference between genders in being a good person.

I never wondered what defines manliness, nor do I care, and I feel like it changes how people percieve it over time judging by peoples reactions to things, but if we go off of a comment on an unrelated video I read recently, saying that manliness is "to build and protect", then Dipper is pretty manly to begin with! He hasn't built anything but he is a protector for sure. xD

But just because she's 12 doesn't mean everyone should be forced to like her character. Dipper is the same age and is a much more likeable character. If she has character growth and changes there's a good chance I'll grow to like her tho! If she always stays like this, that's fine too, but doesn't mean I HAVE to like her.
So as I understand it as the show went on Alex Hirsch became more fond of the idea that the two stupid cops were a couple but Disney wouldn't let him run with it t the time.

I don't get the mabel hate. I mean if my brother told me he was gonna beat a "manliness" tester with his twig arms I also would have laughed in his face, also he makes fun of how short I am constantly. Siblings tease each other all the time, it's what they do, Dipper also does it to mabel and no one calls him a bad brother for it. Mabel isn't a bad sister for teasing her brother, that's normal sibling behavior. What matters is that they support each other when things get serious. Alex also based Dipper and Mabel's relationship on his own relationship with his very supportive twin sister whom mabel is based on so saying mabel never supports Dipper is wild.

Chutzpah is a weird bit of Jewish representation. He's got uniquely Jewish signifiers of masculinity: a kippah and payot. Also, and this may be a stretch, but the towel reminds me of men sitting for a shvitz. I like that Gravity Falls is a realistic mishmash of American cultures, and that reflects in the weirdness in the woods.
Also Word of God states the Pines are ethnically Jewish but not actively religious.

I love Mabel to death but her bullying dipper is just hard to watch. I get it, I have siblings too and we fight like WW2 but he does nothing but support her and look out for her wellbeing and she constantly makes fun of him. Besides that she can be extremely selfish, Dipper sacrificed so much for her over the series (mostly delusions of getting with Wendy but still) off the top of my head I could tell you one time Mabel made a sacrifice for her twin brother
