He went on to create Amphibia so he's doing great. 3. The pose Dipper made when he turned into wood is the one the shapeshifter made when he said it would be his last form. Spooky. 4. All of the zombies that came to life in scary-oke are all the lumberjacks who died, soooooo yeah. Kids show, everybody! 5. Yes, we ship Dipper and Pacifica. I know I do. 6. This episode might be my favorite, but the next one is the BEST.

A fun detail that was pointed out to me is that now that the Society of the Blind Eye was defeated, people actually remember the weird adventures Dipper and Mabel have, which is why Dipper made it into the news paper.
Dipcifica is born, the true ship, only outstaged by the cuteness of Soos and Melody. I'm happy to see the Northwests get their comeuppance, however small it is.
I always found the newspaper clipping interesting. It's proof that now that the blind eye is gone people are starting to notice the strangeness of Gravity Falls. Not only that, Dipper is actually getting taken seriously as a Mystery Hunter.

I still can’t believe no one realized at this point that Stan was studying geometry as a way to master Total Football and using the machine as a way to select the perfect team and plays
That, or he was just asking Dipper to hold the mirror up so that it was more likely to break when Dipper dropped it. And the ghost was just waiting for a good moment to try and escape. That’s my theory at least~
I was on the fence about Pacifica until the scene where her dad rings the bell at her. After that I just felt really sad for her and angry at her parents, especially since I've known people in real life who were like that; nice, kind people who are forced into being mean by their "holier than thou" parents
That moment when one single gesture shows what has to be years of severe emotional abuse. Like wow. Makes you immediately switch from "this character sucks, I hate her" to "Omg the poor thing has suffered through enough abuse, her parents are monsters, but she's got a chance to heal and be a good person". Wish se got more screentime.
Fun fact: Statue dipper is same pose as in episode 2(season 2) where the shapeshifter says the last form Dipper will ever take is that then gets frozen and if he hadn’t gotten through to Pacifica he would have been stuck like that. Now that is the type of foreshadowing this show is known for.
I think this episode is a masterclass in how to turn a character around. Before this Pacifica was universally reviled, after she's loved and shipped with Dipper like crazy
On the DVD commentary they talk about being surprised that people were so put off by the bell, since they intended it to just be a bougie version of "I'm gonna count to three." Also, they were surprised that Disney let them get away with the room full of animal heads dripping blood and chanting "ancient sins" 'cuz that's just horrifying.
_KINDA._ In general oak is harder, though there is a rare species of birch that _is_ harder than oak. To quote my source: "Oak species are slightly harder than Birch - White Oak has a Janka rating of 1360 and Red Oak of 1290, while Birch has a rating of 1260. (Sweet Birch, a less common hardwood, has a higher rating of 1470.)" So if we assume that that line _wasn't_ a result of poor research (which it probably was) then he would be saying that "[his] heart is _slightly_ softer; not much, but _just_ enough for [him] to pass on."
@@felwalkr_94 According to Google, the only birch species that grows in Oregon is Paper Birch (or American White Birch). And as far as birch species go, it's actually very soft-a Janka hardness rating of 910. (For reference, Red Cedar-a softwood-has a Janka rating of 900.) So given what he knows, birch _actually IS_ soft!
"Be strong, bladder; we're not gonna move till sunset" How many of us would want to be in Dipper's place; watching a 48 hour marathon of our favorite show, surrounded with our favorite snacks?
I love this episode so much. We get amazing character development for Pacifica, (I love it when kids break away from their parent's awful morals.) We get Dipcifica, a ship that I really love, and the creepiest, most raw, most disturbing imagery of the entire show. I'm still surprised Alex Hirsch was able to get away with some of it.
It’s even more interesting when you see the video where he posted the changes Disney S&P kept sending him and his replies. They bug him over “bottles will be spun” but not taxidermy animals bleeding from every orifice and a flaming skeleton climbing out of the fireplace.
As Steven Universe, The Owl House and Amphibia have all also demonstrated, this is how you get away with it: Step 1: Play it creative but safe in season 1, until you've built up a solid fanbase. Step 2: From season 2 onwards, *go nuts.* Go all-in with your real vision for the show, as long and hard as you can. Don't stop steadily ramping up the awesome until they *make* you stop.
I adore this episode ! The fact that the "ancient sin" scene aired on disney channel is really surprising, but so good ! that joke at the beginning (3:49) might be one of my favorite of the whole show, it's a classic set up but subverted when Dipper actually made good on his word, and his deadpan delivery kill me every time
It actually kinda pisses me off (and kinda just makes me sad) that everything that went down in this episode was a-okay according to the Disney censors, but stuff like Wendy mentioning a girl among her exes in "The Hand That Rocks the Mabel" and Love God getting two ladies together being an uncompromised no-go... So showing chanting animal heads bleeding out of their mouths and eyes is fine, but showing anything LGBTQ+ isn't... I'm so glad things have gotten a little better since then...
Holy shit. I just realized the reason why the Northwest's had that picture of the lumberjack. They have it in the same room as all the taxidermied heads of the animals they've hunted. It's not out of respect. It's a trophy.
11:22 I think it was just an apparition. The ghost inserted himself into a generic landscape painting, rather than the Northwests keeping a picture of him around.
The next episode will change everything! I hope you're brain doesn't explode from the massive bomb drop it brings to your emotions and knowledge of the show!
This is one of the coolest episodes. LITERAL ONSCREEN BLOOD AND DEATH ALMOST ONSCREEN. SICK ABUSIVE PARENTS LITERALLY DOG TRAINING THEIR DAUGHTER TO OBEY. But mostly Dipcifica fuel xD Idk, Pacifica went from a bad meh character to a genuinely cool one. Can't wait for more of her and her chemistry with Dipper. And remember the shapeshifter saying "this will be the last pose you make" while forming into a screaming Dipper? Dipper takes the same pose while turning into wood! The Lumberjack is Wendy's ancestor, named Archibald Corduroy!
This episode managed to instantly make Pacifica one of my favorite characters. She really seems like a good person when she's not being controlled by her horrible abusive parents. Also I 100% ship Dipcifica.
The long code with the agents in the outro reads: NEXT UP ON UTBAHC: DID ALIENS WRITE THE CONSTITUTION? CRAWDADS IN TIARAS! AND FLORIDA: THE SHOW. I loved Pacificas story and the Dipcifica ship and I always wished for more of it than the show offered. Thankfully the owl house introduced a character with a similar background to Pacifica and she gave me everything I ever wanted and a lot more.
you're so lucky you're watching the show after it's all aired, watching this during it's airing towards the second half of season 2 there were several weeks or even several months between episodes sometimes. imagine getting that "the world is ending tomorrow" cliffhanger and having to wait a month for the next episode, there were so many crazy theories going on between episodes too.
It’s interesting, when Dipper was frozen in that position, in the bunker in episode 2, the shapeshifter told Dipper that exact pose would be ‘the last form he ever took’ which would have been the case here.
Oh yeah, it's important to not forget Bill Cipher in the episodes going forward. Won't say where, won't say when, just know you'll see him again some sunny day.

11:36 To answer your question here at 11:50, the Mirror that the ghost was trapped in was made of Silver. Silver is primarily a very powerful conductor of heat, also, the ghosts beard was made of fire. So the ghost used his flaming beard to heat the mirror enough so Dipper would drop the Mirror and let him get away.
My favorite bits of the whole episode are Agent Powers (Nick Offerman) removing a fake mustache from on top of his real mustache, and the peacocks gobbling like turkeys. Peak humor.
Snobby, rich girl becoming a kinder person and breaking away from her toxic parents' ideals of superiority and titles thanks to the help of a dorky, brown haired person who becomes their love interests.
This is one of my favorite episodes of this show and it made me really like Pacifica’s character while also making me hate her parents almost as much as Odalia Blight
Aw, Mosco, you sweet summer child. I wish I was once again like you, and only horribly worried about what's coming, instead of actually knowing. I can never have that innocence back.
This is a really great set-up for when Dipper and Mabel travel five years in the future, and discover that Pacifica is 1) funding a Gravity Falls paranormal investigation team, and 2) is Dipper's long distance girlfriend.
This is one of my favorite episodes of all time. Also, I really feel like Pacifica was an early beta of Amity's character arc. The parallels between them are really interesting
This is probably my favourite episode, Mat Braly the creator of Amphibia directed this episode and was responsible for a lot of the darker moments and jokes in the show, this episode in particular would go on to heavily inspire his work on Amphibia. So ends my brief pitch to convince you to please react to Amphibia (even if you only react to certain season 1 episodes so you can get through it faster).
I like it when next episode it's revealed Bill cipher is actually Tony determined in disguise, and is actually the shape shifters twin. Who is revealed to be the cleft chin Stan And the scene where Mabel and dipper fight Toby, but ultimately get saved by Soos who is revealed to be the author ‼️
This episode caught me off guard for many reasons, but specifically because of how quickly it roped me into shipping Dipper and Pacifica. I never even thought of shipping them before this episode, and normally I dislike ships that get shoved down your throat without chemistry, but Dipcifica somehow was different, and I still don't know why.
Not a fake spoiler, and not even a real actual spoiler, but Alex Hirsch has snuck "DipCifica forever" as a hidden message in another thing he has worked on after Gravity Falls, so yeah, there's some love for the ship!
This is 100% my favourite episode of the series. It was directed by Matt Braly who later went on to create my favourite show of all time Amphibia. This is the most Pacifica development we get in the series and I ship her and Dipper to hell and back. The horror imagery in this episode is fantastic which, after completing Amphibia does not surprise me in the slightest. And of course the ending sets us up for everything to come crashing down next episode, I can't wait
People believe Pacifica was abused into believing that if she didn’t obey the Bell ringing she would be in trouble. They basically conditioned her into thinking that was and a lot of people believe it was abuse due to how afraid she is of defying it.
Man I can't wait for the next episode where we found out Dipper and Mabel are a figment of Stan's imagination along with everything that happened till now has been a dream
I don't know why Mosco was so worried that Dipper arrived to Northwest Manor only a half hour before the party. The episode is only 22 minutes so that's plenty of time. 😏
This episode is one of my favorite in the entire series because it is written well, has a plot hook that then leads to the next episode which might be my favorite episode of the series period, and shows character development for a character that I was not expecting to get any and that overall turned my view around on the character to no longer disliking them and actually liking the idea that maybe after all was said and done that perhaps they set up the idea that later on Dipper and Pacifica will hook up and they would probably balance each other out well. Overall it's just a great episode because it is episodic enough that you don't really need the full context of the series minus the end hook so it makes it a great episode to suggest to anyone to get into the series because that hook is a good sell to make someone want to see what the whole serialized narrative is.
One of the best episodes. And who would have thought it would give us the best ship of the series. Dipcifica is just one of those ships we didn't realize we wanted until we got it. And such growth and understanding of Pacifica's character. BTW, if you didn't know, the bell ringing her parents were doing is a form of child abuse meant to condition kids into compliance.
another few spoiler-free things:
1. The ghost's name is Archibald Corduroy, so he's Wendy's ancestor.
2. Matt Braly wrote this episode, and won an ANNIE AWARD for it!
Correction: Braly won an Annie for the episode, not an Emmy. Though that doesn’t take away from anything, he still did a great job!
Someone should just let Matt Braly create his grim, dark fantasy, horror cartoon at this point
5. This is the way.
MATT WROTE THIS EPSODE???

Sir, this has been the chosen name for at least 6 years. I am afraid this ship has sailed, pun very much intended.
The ghost becoming 'empowered' when he looked at the forest right outside the manor might have been because it was the location of his death.
That, or he was just asking Dipper to hold the mirror up so that it was more likely to break when Dipper dropped it. And the ghost was just waiting for a good moment to try and escape.

Snobby, rich girl becoming a kinder person and breaking away from her toxic parents' ideals of superiority and titles thanks to the help of a dorky, brown haired person who becomes their love interests.
She’s pretty much beta Amity
Basically the same situation. Only diff is that Amity full-on becomes Luz's GF while Pacifica and Dipper just stay somewhat implied.
Your reaction to the shortened intro was the same as mine when I first saw this episode
My favorite character is coming up in the next episode!
This is one of my favorite episodes of all time. Also, I really feel like Pacifica was an early beta of Amity's character arc. The parallels between them are really interesting
You're not going to like the twist that an alien is the author and is someone we've met.
How did I only just notice the album Shapeshifter there in the back
Pacifica's father = Nathan Fillion. Captain Reynolds of the Serenity himself
The episode that single handedly convinced me that Dipcifica should happen
3:45 Dipper is a man of his word
Such a great episode, and leading right into the next one super well.
The intro is short because the episode is gonna be longer, that's gonna happen more in the future
I like it when next episode it's revealed Bill cipher is actually Tony determined in disguise, and is actually the shape shifters twin.
Who is revealed to be the cleft chin Stan
And the scene where Mabel and dipper fight Toby, but ultimately get saved by Soos who is revealed to be the author ‼️
Fun Fact: The ghost is a confirmed ancestor of Wendy and her family!
I LOVE all the horrific imagery in the episode.
AHHHHHHH I've been waiting for this episode! Hype for the next couple episodes is REAL
Fun Fact: The ghost haunting the Northwests is an ancestor of Wendy's family
People believe Pacifica was abused into believing that if she didn’t obey the Bell ringing she would be in trouble.
They basically conditioned her into thinking that was and a lot of people believe it was abuse due to how afraid she is of defying it.
FYI: the reason dipper is in the newspaper is because the society of the blind eye is not there anymore to censor it.
Man I can't wait for the next episode where we found out Dipper and Mabel are a figment of Stan's imagination along with everything that happened till now has been a dream
Yes. I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS! My personal favorite episode.
Okay, *now* you're ready for all the Dipper/Pacifica comic dubs floating around here. 😉
14:22 Just like the ShapeShifter said he would.
Pacifica walked so Amity could FLY
That bell speaks of years of abuse to have a paralysing pavlovian response. Just in case you didn't hate her father enough.
1:40 JUSTICE 😈😈😈
Fun Fact is that the ghost in this episode is apparently an ancestor of Wendy’s
14:05 😮❤😮
One of the best episodes. And who would have thought it would give us the best ship of the series. Dipcifica is just one of those ships we didn't realize we wanted until we got it. And such growth and understanding of Pacifica's character. BTW, if you didn't know, the bell ringing her parents were doing is a form of child abuse meant to condition kids into compliance.
Let's go!! this episode finally!
