  • In this After Effects tutorial, I'll show you how to animate these abstract shapes. We'll use expressions to position anchor points, Null objects for the rotation and some more tricks.
    ► Download the project file here: gumroad.com/ma...
    Content:
    0:00 Intro
    0:20 Creating the first shapes
    1:24 Animating the beginning
    3:45 The big shape
    7:00 The small shape
    8:26 Animating the end part
    9:36 Outro
    ► Software: Adobe After Effects 22 (I use the "Default" Workspace in my tutorials)
    ► I use music from @artlist: artlist.io
    ► I use footage from @artgrid: artgrid.io

    Fantastic stuff Manuel, thank you for sharing this! One tip for anyone who (like me) tried to change the timing of the animation and ended up with misaligned circles for no apparent reason - after you add the expression fixing the anchor point to the slide of the circle *don't slide that shape layer left or right in the timeline*, because it will mess with how sourceRectAtTime() works. Move the keyframes and adjust the start and end point of the layer instead.

      Hey thanks very much for that important tip! You're absolutely right! I make that mistake every time before I remember to only move the keyframes, not the layer itself:)

    Would you mind clarifying why you're using expressions to set the anchor point, instead of just setting it yourself? Is it because this allows you to change the achor point at will with keyframes, so you don't have unwanted animations? Or is it just personal preference you always do?

    • @ManueldoesMotion
      @ManueldoesMotion  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The expression automatically fixes the anchor point to a certain point of the shape no matter of its size or position. It would be possible to do that with keyframes but it would be a lot more work to get that right. I don’t use a lot of expressions but it makes things much easier in this case.

    Hey Manuel! Another great one, can you please clarify that expression. I'm trying to break it down, but it still isn't clear yet;
    *A=sourceRectAtTime();*
    *[A.left + A.width, A.top+height/2]*

    • @ManueldoesMotion
      @ManueldoesMotion  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Alex! SourcerectAtTime is great to position your anchor point. A is the variable which replaces it in the expression actual expression. Which means the anchor point sits on the right edge: Left corner + all the width of the shape. Then from the top down half the way. So the anchor point ends up in the Centre of the right edge.

    Hi, can someone explain me why when I apply the expression on the Shape Anchor point 2:28 the circle goes to the top of the composition?

    • @ManueldoesMotion
      @ManueldoesMotion  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you apply the expression to the anchor point property?

    • @alexfreedomroad
      @alexfreedomroad 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ManueldoesMotion Yes. I've been trying to figure it out, because it's intriguing me, where am I missing? I've got some basic knowledge of AE but I'm not good at expressions. If I discover where the problem is, I'll make you know. Thanks for your feedback

    • @ManueldoesMotion
      @ManueldoesMotion  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexfreedomroad Awesome! That's how you learn most. I've spent nights to figure out why stuff didn't work the way I wanted it to... It could be a lot of things;-) Maybe you scaled the layer instead of reducing the size of the path? Can you move it back to the centre and it stays there?

    • @alexfreedomroad
      @alexfreedomroad 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ManueldoesMotion Hi Manuel. I've found the solution studying the expressions on the link from School of Motion you provided on another comment and making a mix with your expression on the tutorial. That's what I came up with, and it worked!
      a = thisComp.layer("centre").sourceRectAtTime();
      height = a.height;
      width = a.width;
      top = a.top;
      left = a.left;
      x = left + width;
      y = top + height/2;
      [x,y];
