    Great review :)
    But I tend to disagree with you on the "fat shaming" parts. I am fat myself, let's face it, no point trying to hide it. And I REALLY liked the parts in this series.
    Why? Because they feel real. That's what was going on my mind since I'm young.
    Realising it isn't fat shaming I think, it's juste basic thuth. And by saying it or reading about it like here, you can open your mind and begin the work on your self esteem. This book has been a really good starting point for me on that subject and I can't help but thank it for this.
    Sometimes you have to say the ugly truth and not always avoiding it to realise it !
    (sorry for the broken english, I'm french)

      Thanks for offering an alternative perspective on the possibly fat shaming in the book. It made me very uncomfortable, so I wanted to bring it up in the video, but I also acknowledge that I am consider "normal" weight so I'm not approaching the topic from a personal place.

    I really like Brent Weeks and really enjoyed this series…I don’t believe this series gets the credit
    it deserves and isn’t talked about enough on BookTube…I have read so many reviews bashing
    the last book in the series and about how the series ended…But I totally agree with you I thought that the ending was really solid and satisfying…
    But there are a lot of reviews that really piss on how this series ended and I just want to let future readers know not to be deterred from reading this series because of those bad reviews for the last book…
    Not sure what those reviewers were expecting but this last book and the ending of this series is very solid and more than satisfying…Thank You for the review of this series it doesn’t get the respect that
    it should in the BookTube community…Keep up the good works 👍🏻

    There is nothing worse than a thin person thinking they know how a fat person thinks. I was a porky kid and how Kip feels is how fat kids feel. No bully or friend is harder on you when it comes to fat than you are yourself. All the fat-shaming pretty much in the book comes from the fat character. He is ashamed of himself and most fat people are to at least an extent.

    Great review, Rachel! I bought the first book over the summer. I read the first chapter and really enjoyed it. I’m planning on tackling it after my Wheel of Time read through. I was hesitant to pick it up for the negatives you mentioned. I hate fat shaming and I really prefer strong women in the books I read. The good parts of this series, however, seems to outweigh those bad things. So now I’m looking forward to reading it.

      Kip was fat do to the shame he felt about his mother and the horrible things she did. He wasn't really ashamed of being fat he was ashamed of not being good enough in his mothers eyes. That led to taking comfort in food.( his own words) and no three characters combined gave him more grief about being fat than he did himself.

    So I started reading the Black Prism this morning and then I noticed I was starting chapter 40 and decided that I need to take a breath. I've had a few moments in the reading where I thought something was overly contrived and too convenient but the series is new enough that I'd give it the benefit of the doubt. I wanted to get a second opinion from someone with a mature reader's taste since I keep getting Book Tube review from creators who are very young and seem to gush about everything they read. One, in particular has failed me 8 out of 9 times with recommendations. If lightbringer works out it will jump up to 8 out of 10 but given his history I was skeptical. I had also heard snippets about the magic system in Lightbringer that made me think that it was one of those worlds where the author created a neat magic system and the rest was just decoration for it. Obviously, 40 chapters in I've not been driven away by the lack of interesting detail in the world. I don't yet see the failure in the famale characters or the propensity for physical descriptions but maybe that gets worse in later novels. So far, I am enjoying this and I will keep reading...

    • @TheShadesofOrange
      @TheShadesofOrange  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad I could offer a more "tempered" review. I enjoyed the series, but it's not an all time favourite because I had issues with it. I'm sorry that one booktuber keeps steering you wrong. Some people give 5 stars to everything or simply just have really different reading tastes

    • @llywyllngryffyn8053
      @llywyllngryffyn8053 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, now I hav@@TheShadesofOrange
      OK, so now I have read the whole book and I'm actually very disappointed. It had the potential to be great, then really good, then good and finally I'm down to 'Meh". If you care to read, I'll explain:
      The Good of this book is that many of the character moments and situations were compelling and it had elements that I was hoping would be great. The Magic system started off with a lot of potential and I was initially impressed with it but as things went on I stopped making excuses for it and started to be critical. Much of the dialogue and banter was entertaining and the basic world building and setting vibrance made for a tremendous start.
      The Bad: While the characters seemed to have their own personalities there was a lot of the 'one voice' problem rising up. Clearly it doesn't take great intellect to be a drafter but all of the POV characters had the same kind of cleverness and often the same wit and Brents fingers in the sock puppet were too obvious. The battle was long, boring, illogical and poorly thought out. Many elements were poorly thought out. They might have been exciting to imgine but made little sense if you gave them consideration. The magic system, seemingly hard and defined by rules get softer and squishier ast the story went on. Any many many 'twists' wee so obvious to me that it was almost like I had read the story before. The whole Man in the Iron Mask trope was actually the only one that I didn't see coming but it was still early in the book, so I can forgive myself for missing it. Still, that plot 'twist' was so horribly stupid in context that it is irritating.
      The Ugly: one of my biggest peeves in books is when people write grand stuff that makes no sense because they want to seem Epic. The Evil 'King' of the country that was ravaged by war and nearly destroyed 16 years ago is trying to raise an army of peasants. He levies from all the crappy little villages and when one says no, he brings his army to destroy his own village as an example. (OK, this idea alone is fine, sounds like what a viking would do to put the fear in his people.) Yet a week later he has an army of 100,000 troops, most of whom are undisciplined peasants? Who are marching cohesively and not starving to death, not digging latrine pits, pissing in the water source, being force marched, not rebelling... This author has no clue about the logistics of an army, at all. He also has them manage to speed ahead during this forced march, not break, not fall apart from desertion, and at the end of a full days march, the artiller is in front? The men in full plate are still fresh enough to charge on foot the last thee miles to a wall and fight? Full plate... not light... middle of summer, full days march... Not stopping for food and water.... speaking of, there is a scene with a group of rabble roasting a boar... Where did common rabble, no the kings elite, get a full sized boar to eat? Clearly if there had been any hunting to have, 100,000 men would have already devoured it and the best would have gone to the king and his elite but scum had an animal roasting in full view of everyone. Total Insanity done for a cheap scene to demonstrate that Kip, who anyone with half a brian can already have seen was going to be a young prism, is a prism. Not a surprise, it was obvious.
      Then there is a simpler problem, manpower. The nation was depopulated only 16 years ago, they left hardly any men in those villages and yet there are men to conscript? from where? These people are dirt poor and suppressed by the foreign rulers .. so... how can Kip and the Pig lady even be so damn fat? Drug addled mother doesn't equal overfed son. Kip is fat for character points. That's all. The Fat woman cooking the meat didn't hunt it herself and had no money so ... it was just a scene contrived to make Kip ask for food and get attacked.
      Then there is the wicked sponsor from the school. This woman was such a charicature that it was sad. Liv 'should' have told the prism about her right away when she felt as though he was her savior, but she didn't because... ... ? ... she didn't tell her father because ... ... ? ... Too many clever people doing stupid things for plot.
      The army of the jerk king had over 1,000 drafters... How? in 16 years people still need to grow up and have babies.. in a counry with no men to spare, they also had enough children to have them become drafters, learn from a mad man and gow old enough to become wights... They all just happened to hide away from the entire world until the plot needed them to arrive. They hung around at the villain HQ and trained up their skills for a decade waiting for their chance to get shot by muskets attacking a city and no one every saw them, or reported it to anyone such that it would get to the prism who has a penchant for hunting wights... UGH
      So much good stained with all this crap tears this book down and I don't want to read more. On top of it all, the very rules oriented magic system keeps getting all these exceptions poked in it and it makes me cringe. The wall with the programmed illusions was just such a D&D kind of spell effect that I had to scratch my head and wonder where the Chromaturgy went...

The Wheel of Time is worth reading all the way through if you haven't already but it is definitely a time commitment. I've liked the First Law series even though it too has issues. My best compliment to what Joe Abercrombie wrote is that it has fewer major flaws than any other series I've read in the last few years. • @TheShadesofOrange

      We can agree to disagree but I found Karris particularly to be a SUPER weak female character. There are multiple places in the book where she basically says that she is nothing without Gavin & Kip. A woman should have an identity outside of being of wife & (step) mother. And I honestly found the other female motivations very weak, like Gavin's room slave
