I just finished September House and it was really, really good. Trope subversions, lovable sympathetic protag, climactic twists that were unexpected and actually had an impact. Apparently the author is a full-time psychologist and social worker, but I hope she writes more books!
Fellow Canadian here. The September House was so intelligent and metaphorical. I would add this to your list!!
I totally forgot about The House on Abigail Lane! I'm hoping my library will order it. Thanks for the recs!
Smithy (Amanda Desiree) is one of my favorite haunted house books with a compelling main character, Smithy the chimp, 70s vibes, and mixed media.
Im going to recommend people read The Whisper Man. Usually it takes me a couple of chapters to really get into a book. The first chapter was good and how it let into chapter 2. I was all in. Not to mention so great eeriness to it. Hair standing up which is what I want in horror books.
Eeeee! You're awesome! I love Haunted House Horror!
In your videos the first thing I do is pay attention to the book(s) you showcase just behind your shoulder, so today I've added The Wicked to my list.
In terms of haunted house, I guess I would add The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. And on a more tame note there is The House Next Door by Darcy Coates, which is more character driven and I liked it better for the female friendship.
PS: I've watched this with rain in the background, on a foggy morning, so perfect 🌧🍂
Sounds like a perfect foggy atmosphere
Haunted houses are one of my top favorite horror sub genres (along with grief horror and survival horror)- and I'm thrilled that I haven't read everything on this list (although did start Horrorstor on my train into work today!). Ghost Line is one I am excited about- haunted space station is one of those ideas that I LOVE- and when it is executed well, it is just amazing. I did read Nothing But Blackened Teeth, definitely was not the book for me- but I am so glad that it's one that you really enjoyed! So many exciting books to check out, great list as always Rachel 🏠👻
Yeah Blackened Teeth definitely didn't work for a lot of people. I'd nervous to try rereading it in case it doesn't hold up for me
I would heartily recommend Kill Creek by Scott Thomas. Four different styles of horror writers, slightly down on their luck, agree to a livestream for some guys podcast in one of the most haunted places in the country. It has great fun poking at the tropes of each of the writers (you will know who they are, or who they should be) but when it comes time for the scares it doesn't pull punches.
I will talking about that one very soon
Awesome! I have only seen a few of your vids but consider me subscribed.
I’m hoping to get to Horrorstor this spooky season! I haven’t read any graphic novels yet but you may have sold me on Locke and Key! 👻
Yay!
Great video, Rachel! If you have not read Julia by Peter Straub, you may enjoy it. It is a haunted house story, but it moves beyond the tropes. It is a slow burn, so you will want to read it when you are in the mood for something like it. It is also a grief narrative. Peter Straub seems to be polarizing. People seem to either love his books or be bored to tears by them, so I am not sure if Julia will be a new favorite for you, but it is a different type of haunted house story.
The Shining is one of my favorite novels of all time. I love it.
Appreciate the rec. I have not read that one
@@TheShadesofOrange - I hope you enjoy it.
I am reading Dresden Files. I guess it qualifies as horror? it feels ,ore like urban fantasy that uses horror elements rather than being flat out horror.
I loved that series, but consider it Urban Fantasy. Enjoy
I’ve had Horrorstör on my TBR FOREVER but haven’t gotten around to it. I guess this is a sign to add it to my spooky season reads (finally)!
Do it!
The Ghost Line sounds a lot like Dead Silence by SA Barnes. Adding it to my list!! 🏚️
Thanks for this! I like haunted house stories that emphasize a creepy mystery rather than pure horror. My faves are not recent: The Uninvited by Dorothy Macardle (1942), House of Many Shadows by Barbara Michaels (early 1970s), The People from The Sea by Velda Johnston (later 1970s). All feature complex mysteries with clues to their solution being provided via a haunting.
Thanks for your recs!
Locke & Key is my favorite graphic novel series (next to Saga)!!
I read horror store a few years ago, and really enjoyed it, definitely unique.
Still patiently waiting for you to give Hell House by Richard Matheson a shot! (Unless you already did and I missed it. LOL) I’m not a huge haunted house fan either, but man - that one was REALLY good!
I often wondered if it is better than the movie.
I actually read it last year. I liked it (3.5 stars) but sadly didn't love it as much as I wanted
Aw man! Sorry you didn’t love it. Love your videos btw! My TBR grows a little more each time I watch. lol
My honorable mentions are The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and The Woman in Black by Susan Hill.
I might read The Shining again.
I’m picking up Ghost Line today! 👻🙏
Thank you so so much. I need new haunted house novels. Just bought, The Women in Black and September House but I need more.
Despite it's title, graphic novel "Ghost World" by Daniel Clowes doesn't contain any ghosts...or does it? The movie version starring Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson and Steve Buscemi is also pretty darned terrific!l
Another great list! ❤
Some of those do sound interesting but I probably won't be able to get around to them. I probably wouldn't resonate with something that has constant darkness, I rather like mostly light (although in this world one might have to create that psychologically) and little negative things that crop up but the person has a desire to get rid of them (and can get rid of them). "In the mire of darkness" or walking in and within it feels like the wrong attitude, its damaged and shows someone paying attention to the wrong things.
I guess I’m not much of a haunted house person as well, never really considered it. Tho I did really enjoy The Woman in Black, and that’s kinda a haunted house novel, if you squint lol
I've been interested in The Ghost Line......I LOVE atmospheric horror. Do you think someone who doesn't real alot of Sci-fi would have a hard time with it though? The Audiobook of Horrorstor was great! Lock&Key was amazing- I have not finished it yet. The Shining was also a great book. Not my fav. King novel, but it was good. I have only read it once, but I bet it would be better the second read! I was focused on the history of hotel, but I would like to read it again and focus MORE on the mental breakdown of Jack.
The sci fi elements are super light so you definitely could. (But keep in mind that the horror elements are also light)
How did the family in "Graveyard Apartment" not know it was built on a graveyard ? Didn't they look at the cover ?
Haha you would think so!
Could you please recommend short sci-fi novels, novels and stories
With space operas, action, thriller, mystery, time travel and plot twists ?
I am trying to find a book that intrigues and hooks me to read and finish the book
which are easy and moderate reads for non avid book readers
With no film or tv adaptations
Horrorstör was truly fun to read lol
Thank you 🙏🏽
Ikea is Swedish and don't understand the hype with that store. 🤭 One of the few books I haven't read by Hendrix.
Whoops 🤦♀️
I love Walking Dead....lol.
🏡
I’m not a big haunted house fan either. It can get really tired pretty quickly for me. I finished The Elementals recently and that was pretty fun! It’s a southern gothic novel so adds some nuance of southern culture and superstition that is a bit different from the norm. You many enjoy it too! 👻🏚️
Elementals was excellent. Got to love Big Barbara.

Hello there hey there hey

LOL I didn't believe the reviews and wanted to like the second book. I ended up hating it so much it puts me off CK forever lol.

Locke and Key is absolutely brilliant. Joe Hill is ten times the writer his dad is. Stephen King in case you didn't know.
Just read vol 1 of Locke & Key. Can't wait to get to the rest & was a big fan of the show's first season
I have only finished one of his books. I am really slowly getting through The Fireman which feels a little more different.
The one I finished was Nos4a2 which I always think of as a Christmas book for some reason. He does the character depth like King but he has that edginess of Clive Barker in his early works.
@@stephennootens916 20th Century Ghosts is an excellent anthology. I loved Horns.
@@arlem525 Oh I think I have Horns somewhere in my collection. I haven't read it yet though. I also have his first novel heart shape box I believe the title was.
@@stephennootens916 yeah Heart shaped Box. Have not read that yet.

Some fantastic recs! I thought Nothing But Blackened Teeth was really good. And that cover is amazing! I also enjoyed Horrorstor and Locke & Key. The Graveyard Apartment, The Ghost Line, and The House on Abigail Lane are on my tbr. I hope to get to some of them this spooky season. Infidel also seems very interesting. I do love The Shining. It's one of my favorites from SK. 🏚👻
