All cars look the same, this is how trends work. People don't want excentric designs except for the folks who like to stand out. The Koreans took German design. Kia headlights looking like Porsche's. Kona's looking like Series 7. Examples can continue, design is mostly copying other's work. Look at Alfa Romeo, everyone says their design is beatiful but sales are very bad. And all SUV's look the same, erase the badge and headlights, 90% the same square box.
I agree but wages are a lot higher as well and no one buys cars anymore. Everything is on finance. Excellent video as usual Thomas, the expression we use in the UK for the jumping on the tyres is "Axel tramp" and the worst car for this is FWD Saab Aero of many years ago. The weather conditions you were driving in was awful so probably a retest when the roads are dry would be a good idea, In the UK we have the same problem its constantly raining for several days now. The bump across the road is "expansion joints" and they are very annoying but only used with concrete surfaced roads and we don't have many of these except on the M25 motorway between the M3 and M23 junction and its awful (used to be my commute every day). My daughter has the F21 118i (Msport Shadow) which she bought new is 2018, this has the B38 3 cylinder engine with just 134 PS and the 8 speed auto and it a brisk car and you do need feel it is slow at point (its is very frugal and on 90 mile journey to her head office she gets 44mpg repeatedly and is not a slow driver), the new 120 has 170 ps and more torque (its also has the MHT which fills in the gaps) and is about 1.2 second faster to 62 than the f21 118i. I really like the 135i and I really like the is new one but the colour was a bit too "loud", however in the UK BMW offer the Portimao Blue and it looks really good in that colour. Really pleased the car is very good to drive as this size of car has always been my favourite although I have had three E36's, an e39 and and e60 which I have liked all of them, my favourites were the E36 323i and the E60 530i MSport.
Dying? 2023 was their best year both in terms of profits as well as amount of cars sold. The design may be absolutely bad but they're not even close to dying.
@autogefuehl Thomas you are quite right that head restraints is the correct terminology as it was part of a vehicles occupant protection in the event of a vehicle crash. They were never headrests to begin with it became an added benefit as time progressed.
Great review as always. Yes I know that feeling, so do the same thing with mine. Even though I automatically lock the car as I’m walking away, I always check the app to make sure it’s really locked. Haha glad it’s not just me then 😂
I had an F40 1 series and the interiror of this is a big step back. I get that BMW are now tying to differentiate from the larger models in the 1,2 X1, X2 but the F40 interior was closer to a 3 series it was a really lovely car to own. The removal of the ambient lit trim in the doors front and rear and the removal of the iDrive controller are key examples of this.
I've always had this to check if my car is locked after I locked it. 😄 I know what you are talking about. You are not alone. I'm now happy that I'm not alone as well. 😄
Divisive design both interior and exterior. One thing for sure is that there is quite a large amount of cost cutting in all areas except the purchase price!
BMW was one of the rarest manufacturers that distinguish itself from others in every car they make, even in the E87 1 series with the 6 cylinder engine.
Sound is definitely coming from the speakers, that’s why it sounds better. All in all cheap looking in the inside. Is this the last 1 series? They could drop this in the future
When I was younger, I had a 2013 320i. It was the perfect car for driving around Tokyo. I loved it. Now I have enough money to buy any bmw I want in cash but nothing excites me. I miss the old designs of the last decade. My husband still has a 2002 Z3 (our first bmw), a 2018 440i convertible and a 2020 Z4 but we live apart and I can’t drive them. He said I should get a z4 but it seems silly to get a second z4. I need a new car but I just feel blah when I look at their designs. 😢
HAve to admit I am very surprised as I have the 128ti which has 400nm which is the same as this new M135!!! That should not be the case.. yes the hp is about 25 more but really the M135 should have had at least 320hp and 450nm....very odd! Also getting rid of the buttons is a bad idea as the climate controls, idrive controller just worked so, so well on the F40 version...
Thank you, this is a car which interests me because it is the right size for what I like to drive. It probably does a similar job as my last Audi RS3. I loved the colour. I think I can live with the latest BMW UI/UX though I like a bit less digital. It would make a good last ICE before we all do EVs, and talking of EVs I assume there will at some point be an equivalent EV version. What is also interesting is the price cross over points with the BMW Mini sub brand. The entry levels of this are within the price levels of some of the Minis, especially the EVs. I prefer the Mini interior designs and UI/UX but if I want 4WD the ALL4 is a bit too big.
I feel that the previous generation 1-series looks a bit more aggressive. This new one F70 looks a bit awkward. Maybe some aftermarket parts may help improve the look a little bit. The previous M135i used an 8-speed Aisin torque-converter gearbox. What about this new M135 ?
Thx again for another great review! I love the insights you bring into the design and thinking behind the car. I’m a huge BMW fan but haven’t been keen on their recent designs. I actually think they’ve done a good job here. Some may think it looks a bit derivative in styling but that’s the market it’s trying to address. The idea is to attract customers to the brand and this is the kind of car they would probably be buying. It’s not meant to be an M3 or M5 - it’s a family hatch and that market is generally quite conservative in its design language. The thing that worries me is the DCT gearbox - there has a lot of criticism of it at low speeds and pulling away from a stop which is ironic as this car will probably be used by many drivers in slow city traffic. The smoothness and quality of BMW gearboxes is part of what makes them such a an enjoyable drive and it sounds that this gearbox isn’t up to that quality? Did you sense any of this with the 135? Maybe it would be good to compare with a 120 3 cylinder if you get a chance sometime. It would be great to see a 2L engine in models other than the 135 here in the UK but again I guess that’s the market segment they are addressing with this car.
Many people I know have this problem. Including myself. You definitely are not the only one lol. That is why I love cars that have folding mirrors when you close it😂
Why does the M135i have four tailpipes? That’s typically a feature reserved for full M cars, not M-lite models. Plus, why is the “1” on the M135i larger when it’s far from being an actual M1?
Hey Thomas, can you please try to fit the trunk top cover under the bottom cover during your reviews? It might be a handy feature of some manufacturers and some car models. As it looks it might be specifically carved out for this 1 series for example. Great review btw.
The head of BMW design leaving is definitely a good thing. That said as far as hot hatches goes this one isn't bad. Also, is it really that cold already in September for a thick winter jacket?
He shouldn't just leave, he should be prohibited from ever working as a designer for the rest of his life. Like...literally, put a restraining order on him so he can't even design door knobs for a living anymore. He ruined the whole brand in 5 years.
Thomas, you are right to challenge the headrest remark - the term headrest is a throwback to earlier days of motoring where they were conceived as a luxury/comfort feature. Today, they are designed specifically to protect the occupants and should not be regarded (or adjusted) primarily for passive comfort. Head restraints is the better terminology👍. As always, a good and informative video.
Regarding price. I have configured one year ago X5, it was v6 full spec 115k euro, this year same model, same spec above 135k! I see that BMW is on the same road as wagen, greedy management.
How about the gearbox feeling? In the m135i f40 as a aspen gearbox which has aggressive gear shifts( kick back in seats feeling). Weak point of the f40 is rubbish gearbox too aggressive shifts... Have they changed the gearbox to new version in this ?
Thomas, maybe you should start criticizing BMW instead of promoting it? So there might be a chance to save it (if it's not too late). Seriously, look at this? Do you really like the way BMW is turning out?
He is probably the best car reviewer on TH-cam. If he doesn't like something he will be honest about it, maybe he likes this car and how it looks, but he is also open to the opinions of others who may not like the direction BMW are going.
I've always loved small hatches (I've had a Mk7 Golf R since it arrived in the U.S. in 2016), so this review got my attention. I am confused by your discussion of the engine options, though. You quote a 317 HP figure for U.S. spec, but as far as I can determine, BMW has never offered the 1 series in the U.S. and there is no mention of it on their website. What am I missing?
Only BMW would take something as iconic and identifiable as a separated kidney grill and get rid of it so that it looks like every other grill on the market.
Dear Thomas your point of view for 1 series build quality since other journalists critized it as fairly poor. Is it an upgrade compared to F40 or not? Thanks!
Front end is shocking, even the misses who has a 118i said what the hell have they done, only a crazy person will pay money for this embarrassment, at least my new 2024 M440i looks awesome.
It's incredible that in 1959 the British Motor Corporation launched the Austin Mini with front-wheel drive, transverse (across the engine bay) 4-cylinder power. And today in 2024 nearly all cars are built this way. However, the great handling of the layout was only a by-product of the design which was done mainly to maximise interior passenger and luggage space. BMW for years claimed that their 'drivers' cars could only be front-engined and rear-wheel drive to be real BMWs - now, how ironic is it that sever of their cars feature front-wheel drive and transverse engines, on a chassis shared with - MINI!
I just bought a 2016 m240i f23 with low mileage and it looks like a bmw has the b58 engine and sounds great . I wouldn’t swap it for this if they gave me this car for free ! . I came from a fiesta st and this bmw looks the same from the side . What are bmw doing 😢
@@autogefuehl Didn't know. Congratulations and best of luck. You two are made for each other. You guys are projecting really nice energy. I really like the reviews you two provide.
When you think it's not possible anymore, they somehow manage to look it more ugly. And then they wonder how they make no money and have to fire employees. Also embarassing how Thomas talks about them making the car sportier. Here's a bright idea, how about you make it weigh less then 1200kg. Make it a drivers car, that will definitly make it sportier. Cheap plastics, low quality buttons and pianoblack everywhere...man really get jack shit for your money.
Annoyed as an early adopter that I missed out on the grille DRLs. I don't care for it specifically, but how can they introduce updates when barely anyone has taken delivery of the first batches?
Hope the upcoming 123 xdrive will be around 220 like the x1 23i xdrive..it would be a good combination of price and performance..do we know something more about this version?😊
They let the head of their design department go to Rolls Royce, so here's to hoping that next gen will have better designs. This has been their worst generation in terms of designs by far.

Cool 😎
"How ugly should we make all our new cars?"
BMW: "Yes."
1 Series - M140i 😎
But things change and this looks beautiful… super review 👏🏾👏🏾
🙏🙏
BMWs look like a Chinese version of BMW
BMW, please get a grip and bring back the cars we loved...
Why had the M135 got less hp than the F40 version? I don't get it?
🙏
This is not a Bmw. Angel eyes? Zf8? Rear wheel drive? No this is Kia
BMW: "We want a honest and clean design". They must've only paid attention to that when it came to the exhaust then.
Cheers! Gearbox was fine imho!
@@autogefuehl ahh that’s great to know! 👍
7:05 OMG the paranoia 🤣🤣 I actually do that quite often. Glad I'm not the only one
☝️😁
Many people I know have this problem. Including myself. You definitely are not the only one lol. That is why I love cars that have folding mirrors when you close it😂
Why does the M135i have four tailpipes? That’s typically a feature reserved for full M cars, not M-lite models. Plus, why is the “1” on the M135i larger when it’s far from being an actual M1?
Looks really good to me. Only problem is the lower rear bumper
Hey Thomas, can you please try to fit the trunk top cover under the bottom cover during your reviews? It might be a handy feature of some manufacturers and some car models. As it looks it might be specifically carved out for this 1 series for example.
Great review btw.
Cheers 🙏
the more i look at that front, the more it remembers me a KIA from 2015 or something
The head of BMW design leaving is definitely a good thing. That said as far as hot hatches goes this one isn't bad. Also, is it really that cold already in September for a thick winter jacket?
Well they had snow in Bavaria already, so a jacket is needed
There was a very sudden temperature dropped from extremely hot to very cold in that week
He shouldn't just leave, he should be prohibited from ever working as a designer for the rest of his life. Like...literally, put a restraining order on him so he can't even design door knobs for a living anymore. He ruined the whole brand in 5 years.
@@autogefuehl weird things happening everywhere I guess
We need this in the US!
New old model, then old model is better, this is what is common in all nowadays BMW
what about the anbient lighting on the doors seemed to have gone
Thomas, you are right to challenge the headrest remark - the term headrest is a throwback to earlier days of motoring where they were conceived as a luxury/comfort feature. Today, they are designed specifically to protect the occupants and should not be regarded (or adjusted) primarily for passive comfort. Head restraints is the better terminology👍. As always, a good and informative video.
🙌🙌
Regarding price. I have configured one year ago X5, it was v6 full spec 115k euro, this year same model, same spec above 135k! I see that BMW is on the same road as wagen, greedy management.
How about the gearbox feeling?
In the m135i f40 as a aspen gearbox which has aggressive gear shifts( kick back in seats feeling).
Weak point of the f40 is rubbish gearbox too aggressive shifts...
Have they changed the gearbox to new version in this ?
Bmw must fire the designers asap
I like the looks but it’s very expensive.
Thomas, maybe you should start criticizing BMW instead of promoting it? So there might be a chance to save it (if it's not too late).
Seriously, look at this? Do you really like the way BMW is turning out?
He presents different cars. More or less people appreciate them
In every review i show whats good and whats not so good
He is probably the best car reviewer on TH-cam. If he doesn't like something he will be honest about it, maybe he likes this car and how it looks, but he is also open to the opinions of others who may not like the direction BMW are going.
Not everyone has the same opinion as you
Maybe it's a nice car? Too many people want this car to be shit, but maybe it's good.
Sorry thats indeed a mistake, it might count for other outside EU markets though
@@autogefuehl Thanks. Got my hopes up 😄. Americans are to enamored with big SUV's to feed my passion. Keep up the great reviews!
U ll get the 2 series though!
Compared to the other models in BMW's range, the new 1 series is attractive.
Only BMW would take something as iconic and identifiable as a separated kidney grill and get rid of it so that it looks like every other grill on the market.
How did this design get approved!!
I remember Ford used to have Signal Green for Escort mk2s.
When Leah makes a comment it would be good to see her in the video.
I once had a 1970’s Scirocco with a raging 80 entire horsepower. Would that be called a “tepid hatch”?
Dear Thomas your point of view for 1 series build quality since other journalists critized it as fairly poor. Is it an upgrade compared to F40 or not? Thanks!
I think it was fine minus some details I also showed
Which version is offered with 2/3 doors and manual transmission? I always loved that combination in the 1 series.
None
For this generation the best choice is 120 m sport. Value your money guys.
Thanks for the review Thomas
Thanks 🙏
Front wheel drive, but still has a tunnel for xDrive. So what has been achieved with a new engine layout? Nothing except 6-cyl not fitting anymore
They save money by using the same platform and engines for all MINI and smaller BMW models.
I prefer an S3
Awesome review. Like always 💯
🙏🙏🙏
The green makes it look like an alien. 👽
Front end is shocking, even the misses who has a 118i said what the hell have they done, only a crazy person will pay money for this embarrassment, at least my new 2024 M440i looks awesome.
Fiesta xr2, series 1 RS turbo , Peugeot 205 gti 1.9 , Renault 5 turbo , uno turbo ie, Clio 182, etc all affordable hot hatches those days long gone 😢
Kermit The Frog green
Lots of reflections on the horrible screen. Bring back a binnacle and switchgear!
You two are great together... Even if you are just colleagues.
thanks! And luckily more than colleagues :)
@@autogefuehl Didn't know. Congratulations and best of luck. You two are made for each other. You guys are projecting really nice energy. I really like the reviews you two provide.
Thanks for ur kind words!
That’s horrific - what the hell has happened to Germany?
Traitor politicians working for USA and committing to the US's agenda to destroy the EU happened to Germany.
Well, it will for sure help the sales from the previous model.
Fire the whole design team 🚮
Finally figured why I don’t like these new fronts on bmv. They look like the old kia niro.
Quite average Kia... 🤔
Dear lord, why? Mazda makes a BMW and BMW makes a KIA 🫣🤦
CNC (computer numerical control) machined aluminum vent cover. :)
Car aside, you should feature your camera lady more often, Thomas, she's a hoot!😄
=)
Hope the upcoming 123 xdrive will be around 220 like the x1 23i xdrive..it would be a good combination of price and performance..do we know something more about this version?😊
Bmw must fire design team
They let the head of their design department go to Rolls Royce, so here's to hoping that next gen will have better designs. This has been their worst generation in terms of designs by far.
No.
They can’t for political reasons.
