    I've had my 2012 S80 for 5 years now. Got it CPO with 28K on it. Now has 97K in 2019. Been a fantastic car. Totally agree with this review, I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, it isn't a race car. But it is a solid, very quiet, reliable car that just never lets me down. my second Volvo... I've always taken them to the dealer for service. This tank has had nothing done to it except tires, brakes, oil changes and the normal dealer recommended services. Zero true mechanical failures. Yes, I have considered trading - to an S90.... but then I think, why? This car is doing just fine and serves me well. And yes, It is really a tank, and it still looks crisp and clean. She will never win any land speed races, however, that is not what I want or need. Happy guy here.

      What engine is yours? I own a 2012 S80 T6 AWD 3L and i dont have any problem with racing, my car is still solid, robust, fast (starting speed and highway) and so far, like you have said it, i have never had any mecanical problem (minor service done every 10k km, change of tyres and bateries per need and that's all). Clocking 180k km but still performing like new.
      I have been thinking that i was just lucky with my car but your comment makes me realise that Volvo is for sure one of the best reliable car.
      I have seen reviews of S90 and have concluded that beside the touch screen monitor it doesnt have anything superior to mine. Will still drive my S80 for 2 more years then i will see...

    I just bought a used 2012 S80 3.2. I had a used 04 xc70 and I loved it. My used S80 only had 68,000 miles. Its such a nice looking car. Not flashy but very expensive looking. It's got enough tech, hp and pop for me. Its silver with the optional 18" 6 spoke wheels.

    I agree with you Steve on this car. It easily gets lost in the crowd, but it's nothing an updated front and rear fascia might cure. It's classy and simplistic, the way a Swedish car is.

    Good review and some great comments. The S80 has not been a good seller for Volvo, but Volvo wants to penetrate the Sunbelt in the US, where wagons/crossovers/SUVs are not as popular. The S80 is a sedan that will help them do it, so they'll keep it. Great car.

    Love your reviews! This has to be the best looking combination for this car I have ever seen: the paint color, wheel design (makes or breaks a vehicle), and that great creamy-beige interior color; it all works. And thank heaven your reviewing isn't anything like Tom Mutchler's from Consumer Reports!

  • @benjaminsmith2287
    @benjaminsmith2287 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The original interior flowed a lot better than this iteration of it. Volvo had to retrofit the infosystem so it had the extra hump on the dash, the controls on the steering wheel and they strangely added a thick chrome surround to the nice contemporary feeling floating console and use somewhat garish glossy wood. The original interior had as a default, natural wood which made it look a lot more modern. So, Volvo made the look of the dash less modern than what they started out with in 2007.
    I'm so glad now that Volvo has moved on from these EUCD cars onto the SPA and CMA platforms. The new cars are all modern Volvo. The only thing I wish they retained were the 5-cylinder engines. I would have standardized on those instead of the 4 cylinders they currently use but Volvo had sound business reasons to standardize on the 4 cylinders. But their sound just don't match the class of the current Volvo line.

    Great review! I have a 2010 S80 V8 with the Executive package. No leather dash (since it’s the older interior) but I do have massage seats, an analog clock on the dash, and the amazing but short lived Yamaha V8. These higher trim S80s are gems today - great values, still stylish, and they do almost everything well!

    One of the best luxury cars you can buy! Just purchased one and its amazing! Rides nice, and everywhere I go, people shower me with compliments! Volvo is always going to be Volvo you either like them or you don't but I must say I'm a Volvo buyer for life! They are amazing cars, beautiful inside and out something Lexus need to work on in my opinion. I hate that new grille they are using on their cars, gross!

    • @fredaydaybae8450
      @fredaydaybae8450 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      S Smith totally agree!! Lexus doesn’t have the class and panache that Volvo has. Lexus is for those that want to show they’ve arrived, Volvo is for those that need to show no one they’ve arrived or where they’re going.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fredaydaybae8450 I don't necessarily agree with that. Lexus are very fine cars with a higher panache level than Volvo (if that matters to anyone). Most Lexus on the streets I see are the RX SUVs, not the lux sedans. I also see the IS sports cars.
      I agree with S Smith that the grills on the new Lexus cars are way over the top.

    • @fredaydaybae8450
      @fredaydaybae8450 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Benjamin Smith panache most CERTAINLY matters as well as pedigree. Lexus only has that for buyers that are brand aware...or that want an expensive Toyota and don’t care who sees that they bought one. Volvo buyers are of a certain ilk, one that doesn’t chase Toyota brand awareness.

    If you're familiar with both brands I don't think that they really compare equally and I'm not sure that they're trying to. IMO the S60 falls between the 3 and 5 series, being closer to the 5. The S80 is between the 5 and 7 being closer to the 7. Volvos are fairly unique cars that you have to understand for what they are and for their individuality. If you care to of course.

    Just got one of these in UK police spec(ie interior options so crap you can't actually buy a civvy one like it) with the 230bhp D5 engine(FWD). Seats are nice, rides very well, far more comfortable over 10-12 hours than the e90 BMW it replaced. Not as quick mind, but 130 isn't difficult. Boot is smaller than I would have thought for a Volvo, given the space in the V70 wagon, but it's an unmarked so it only carries basic stuff. We trialled the Geartronic, but that was pathetic so manual it was. Looking into getting a entry-mid spec diesel now as my own car, so found this review. So thanks Steve, great review.

    While the XTS is the more dramatic of the two, the XTS also has a less powerful engine, worse build quality, and impossibly useless CUE system. The S80 is indeed the much more sober one, but it excels in the thoughtfulness of many small details like contrast stitched dashboard, clever storage, overall reliability, ease of use, and its CitySafety system. But, there are fairly large updates for the interior/exterior/infotainment system/transmission available in mid-june. Google 2014 Volvo S80.

  • @AdrianC12345
    @AdrianC12345 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That USED to be the case the with the 1st generation S60/S80. Now that all other cars have gotten bigger and the 2nd generation S60/S80 have remained pretty much the same size, the S60 directly competes with the 3-Series and the S80 with the 5-Series. Volvo, as of now, has no 7-Series competitor, though they have hinted at it for the future.

    How would you say this compares to a fully loaded V6 Passat? Looking at the images of the volvo interior remind me a lot of the new Passat which also offers more room and similar performance. However, it's $15-20k more expensive than the Passat. It seems like a stretch to say the volvo name plate carries a premium like a Mercedes-Benz. Strikes me as a value mismatch unless I'm missing something?
