Inside the Life-or-Death World of Competitive Bull Riding

  • As a third-generation Native American bull rider, Bo Tyler Vocu faces risk of serious injury and death each time he gets in the ring. At just 16 years old, Vocu has already broken his hip twice pursuing his dream of becoming a world champion bull rider-a dream that's been passed down from his grandfather to his father and is now his.
    On this episode of 'Rites of Passage,' VICE caught up with Vocu and his family ahead of a major bull riding competition in Oklahoma to talk about the serious risks riders take to compete in one of the most dangerous sports on Earth. Vocu talks about his grueling practice schedule and his pre-competition rituals, and his father weighs in on what it's like to watch his son compete as a parent, and as a bull rider himself.

    Remember that these bulls are assets worth thousands of dollars, some reaching a worth of over half a million. Would you treat your sole money earner poorly? These bulls are treated better than the cowboys riding them. As a stock contractor I want to personally clarify that no bulls would ever be purposely put in any pain/suffering, for they make the money that feeds the stock contractors family. ( to make them buck we use flank straps, like a loose belt that they think they can kick off, but is just tight enough to stay on, no pain whatsoever )

    • @floordoctor
      @floordoctor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      How do you get a bull worth that much? What is his value based on? Lastly, why is he the sole money earner? Are options so limited that you gotta get yourself a bull to live? To answer your question: I would hope not, but it certainly doesn't exempt that type of behavior.

    • @rocker4577
      @rocker4577 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      What bullshit, of course they're looked after just as racehorses or greyhounds are, which of course is not the point. Its the racing or riding which is detrimental to them not the downtime and once they have exhausted their use in the arena, bye bye. No buddy, you've got it all wrong.

    • @codymullins2258
      @codymullins2258 6 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      Keep talking about an industry your not involved in, going to get real far convincing me that my bulls and the friends of mine bulls are treated wrongly. After every rodeo they go home to the ranch. They get to graze all week with no stress, then for 24 seconds a weekend they are in a situation that they have done for years. Same amount of stress any trained animal gets into when they are about to perform their job. Comparing this to race horses? We don't work our bulls out, i mean how would you do that? There is no pressure to beat the rest, we just do the best we can 8 seconds at a time. Most cowboys don't have the money nor moral instability to do anything wrong to an animal that does so much for us. Their are no drugs, even if I wanted to I dont have the money for that. Not speaking for every contractor out there, but for you to tell me that i treat my animals wrong? You sir, are the liar.

      With All Due respect, A 1800-2000 Pound Bull Versus A 180 Pound Human Critter Ain't Exactly An "Even Field" And Doesn't Feel that way either when the bull Bucks You Off, Butts You, Stomps You,Then Runs Off And Throws Rocks At You, If You're not already a Greasy Spot In The Arena Dirt.
      What now feels like a hundred years ago, In my Misspent Youth I Rode Broncs And Bulls for several years in my 20s And Had A Big Time, Made a little money too, but started getting offers to Break And Train Saddle Horses, which although dangerous wasn't like Bull Riding,and I quit Bulls, kept riding Bareback Broncs & took Breaking & Training Jobs as well. I enjoyed it all immensely. I was Young, Healthy and Single, and figured if I was ever gonna do it, that was the time for such nonsense. I kept up the Horse Breaking & Training to this day. I'm now 72 and there's a nice Mare in my pasture that I'll put under Saddle this Fall. I can still do it, only a little slower and more carefully, because I don't Heal as quickly as I did in my 20s & 30s. It's Still Fun And I wouldn't Change A Thing if I had it to do over again. I've got Nothing But Respect For Bull Riders, and having Straddled more than a few of them, I got a good idea what they go through. Every Bull Rider Is A Certified Bad Ass in my eyes. It's been said, A Bull can rip their head off and they'll just tuck it under one arm and use it to Holler "Outside" and come out of the chute, "Lookin Fer 8".

Legendary bulls are even inducted into PBR’s Hall of Fame (Brand of Honor) and recognized as athletes alongside the cowboys. They don’t buck like that because they are abused, it’s their nature, just like when you occasionally see a cowboy get thrown off and the bull charges. It's not just a question of when you're going to get hurt, but how badly you're going to get hurt. The biggest pain in the ass about getting badly hurt is that you aren't able to make money to help put food on the plate for the family. Recovering from a bull riding injury isn't like recovering from a NFL injury. The NFL guys are still collecting their pay check. Bull riders don't get paid nothing (unless they are a star w/ major endorsements), which can sometimes cause them to get back into competition way before they are fully healed.

      Clorox Bleach yeah perhaps they should also make a 40 min. documentary about their lives in 3 parts, why should they address them? it's not vice that sexually harassed anyone, the employees did and when they found out they got fired, it's that simple.

      When you sign up for every rodeo they put your name and the bunch of bulls that are going to be at the rodeo in a hat so to speak and then they draw out a riders name and then a bulls nane so its the luck of the draw on how rank your bull is going to be

    What a bunch of close-minded pricks in the comments. Unless you've been part of the rodeo culture, don't bash something you don't understand. Of course the bulls don't want to be there, but they are kept safe and rarely harm any harm is done to them. In terms of a domestic animal's life, they are doing fine. In most cases the bulls are SAFER than the rider. If the rider wants to risk their own life, just like many other sports, that's their choice. It's easier to be hateful then it is to be understanding. grow up

      You're the clueless one here mate, obviously some people are commenting out of pure emotion and dont know much about the "culture" but for you to type as if its the pinnacle of humane animal husbandry like the dont put cigarettes out on the balls of bulls to make them more violent & unpredictable, dont kill any bull that injures a human, etc is beyond intellectually dishonest and bordering lying.

      So why don't you actually share your opinion and have a discussion with these "hipster vegans" instead of trying to bag something out that you don't understand? Do you see the hypocrisy? If you have a question about veganism ask away. If a sentient being is put in stress and harm just so some "men" can get an adrenaline rush, that is immoral. Please respond I'd love to hear why you felt the need to attack vegans, and why you defend rodeo.

Do some research on the PBR bull care. They have trained veteranarians on watch. We treat them like family. Cause they are. Like a family dog, only big.

      Mrk Prk I thought in 2017 it was quite clear to everyone that the meat and dairy industry is cruel and inhumane. millions of animals being killed after living an unfree life full of antibiotics etc. not only that, but you have the environmental consequences... bull riding on the other side: the bull lives a nice life until his death. I don't eat meat and recently stopped eating dairy, but I don't have a problem with hunting or bull riding, for that matter. If you're truly interested, there's a lot of good documentaries about the meat and dairy industry woth watching
