The "fact" about the sami is simply not true. The frozen wastelands in the north could not sustain any form of life until the first Norwegian settlers came up from the south when it got warm enough. The ancestors of the Sami came in from the east at a later period. There is substantial evidence supporting this, including haplogroup studies

My real great grandfather (born a Willis), was from Norway, and the family left Norway to escape poverty. The family has a weird quirk, where too many of my family keep giving away their kids. Aunts have given away half their kids. Great grandfather and his siblings were put up for adoption. Repeated by my father, whom just fathered kids everywhere without claiming them. What's really weird, is when they have a family reunion, and share the pictures with me, but didnt invite me or the other ones not claimed (lol).

Fun fact about Norway. They have the boringest TV in the world. They have chopping wood and knitting and fishing and paint drying shows that last for hours at a time. And I mean hours. Like 12 hours non-stop in some cases. Weeks can go by without a dramatic representation of a car chase or a person being shot in a TV program. Which makes the terrorist attack in 2011 tragically ironic.

    • @dnebdal
      @dnebdal ปีที่แล้ว

True, though in this case we split apart more recently; as I understand it we all spoke dialects of old Norse that have slowly drifted apart after the viking age. It also helps how Norway was a Danish holding for centuries while geographically and linguistically closer to Sweden, and how Denmark used to hold south Sweden - we've rubbed off on each other.
For comparison, German was mysterious until I had lessons. (Though with that introduction the relationship is very obvious.)

Bokmål (book tongue/speech/language) is basically old Danish writings with some letters exchanged. "dt" became "tt" (Danish "fedt", Norwegian "fett") and the g -> k in certain words, like Danish "nog" -> Norwegian "nok".
It's not very normative though, as Norway has far more local accents than Britain for instance. Living on Vannöya, you can actually tell which side of the island someone comes from.
Nynorsk was a nationalistic effort to make something purely Norwegian, by taking all these accents (not diverse enough to be dialects) and make a hybrid written language from them.
That is why the coins and notes in Norway are marked both "Norge" and "Noreg". Nynorsk never really took off, but there is a persistent minority using it.

I don't doubt that Norway is a spectacular place to visit and live, a significant reason (I should think) being that Norway's population in January 2021 was 5.4 million, where in 2012, 75.2% of the total population are ethnic Norwegians (born in Norway with two parents also born in Norway). Compare that to the U.S., with a 2021 population of 331.9 million, and an ethnicity from every other nation in the world, where nobody (any longer) gives a crap about getting along. The multiculturalism of the U.S. (much touted as making the country far better that every other country is a bunch of bull.) You more-than-three-dozen other countries in the world (besides Norway) who are upwards of 85% monoethnic, should be getting along greatly. If you're not, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

You are so correct. Liberals point to places like Norway and say that they are great places to live and that Americans should be like them because they have low crime etc. But then they tell us that ethnic diversity is good. Yet in Norway almost everyone is white. Japan is the same. Japan has very little crime and almost everyone is the same race being Asian. So from where I sit, it doesn't look like diversity is actually good after all. America is just a nation of a hundred different groups and races that all hate each other and the country is slowly falling apart. I love all races but I don't think it is a good idea to try to make a country out of multiple groups that have nothing in common.

@@jlrutube1312 I think the MAJORITY of Americans think as you and I do but won't admit it out of being labeled RACIST. My mother's parents came over to American before The Great War. My grandpa was eager to assimilate and was so proud to show off his certificate after he became a citizen. He learned to speak English though always with a heavy Polish accent. He had a good job. Grandma had no interest in officially becoming a citizen. She simply stayed home and had 11 kids. Their oldest son eventually became the effective patriarch of the family and looked out for everyone. Nowadays the new immigrants (even many of the legal ones) aren't interested in assimilating. The new immigrants want the 'got here before you did' immigrants to adapt to THEIR ways. That's impossible to do with a 'hundred different groups' wanting everyone to be as they are. In my grandparents' time, America was called 'the great melting pot'. Today I call it 'a great caldron of slop'.

Othervise the understanding is more or less 'okay' in the other directions, imo) (maybe swedes and danes do not share that idea) Norwegian and Swedish is to me the most similar, easiest to understand, when spoken. the way of speaking, putting up the sentences, is quite similar Norway vs Sweden. Possible natural with the long common border. I understand 95%+ swedish accents with no bigger issue, now as an 'half old man', being exposed to the other scandinavian languages via TV , media for decades. The Danes got that German/Deuth influence to their speaking, and when also speaking fast, I have to focus more lisening to Dansih than Swedish.

There are always some parts of cities that are better and worse than others, true. I've been through there at night and felt safe enough, but on the balance I think I'd recommend visitors pick somewhere else to be past midnight on a Saturday, if that makes sense? It's not the wild west, but on the scale of Oslo streets it's also not the best.
Besides, I think "no-go zone" implies even the police stays away, which is far from the case here - their headquarters are right down the street, and they wander around the area in the evenings.

I'm a bit tired of this. Yes, a Viking was the first European to "set foot" in North America. But he had no idea it was a whole new contenent, and they left after a short time. "Discovered" is a bit strong a word.

Norway is the largest shareholder of mining company denounced for contamination in the Amazon. The Norwegian government, responsible for harsh criticism of environmental policies in Brazil is the main shareholder of the mining company Hydro, the target of denouncements by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) of Pará and of almost 2 thousand lawsuits for contamination of rivers and communities in Barcarena (PA), a municipality located in one of the most polluted regions of the Amazon rainforest.
840 Billion Dollars are stolen every year in Brazil by foreign countries, just in oil. The Norwegian Minister of Finance has just announced the profit of 120 billion dollars in 2022, which will increase to 138 billion dollars in 2023, in oil. Half of that profit is from Brazilian oil. That goes to Norway, for nothing, even without paying taxes to the Brazilian State. Everything is camouflaged and manipulated to hide, deny and even encourage an increase in theft, which is why the countries that most destroy the environment put pressure on the Brazilian Amazon. Because it has huge oil reserves and they have already destroyed almost all of its forests and now they want the rest of the Brazilian wealth. Say what they say, the Amazon still exists today, which would not have happened if it had been explored by the French, Israelis, Americans, Dutch, or English. The Norwegian Royal Family Member, Erling Sven Lorentzen, married with princess Ragnhild, sister of king Harald V of Norway, attacked and robbed the lands of the Amazonian Indians Tupinikim and Guarani, his company planted more than 1 million hectars of eucaliptus and left the natives without land and later without any water.
In addition to facing lawsuits, the Hydro company has yet to pay fines stipulated by Ibama in the amount of R$ 17 million, after an overflow of toxic mud in rivers by one of its subsidiaries in the Amazon region, in 2009. According to Ibama, the spill placed the local population at risk and generated "fish kills and significant destruction of biodiversity". But all so called rich countries are stressing for destroying all the Amazon forest, because their ego is so rotten that they still prefer money, coins and material units to buy garbage and plastic toys, than life. After destroying all their own natural resources, they dont want that Brazil keep being the only country in the world who still have a big forest, because it wasnt transformed in money, like rich countries have done!

About 5 years ago I met a pretty Norwegian woman 20 years younger (at 54) and married her even though I knew virtually nothing about the country and culture. She came to this country (America) to get away from the cold and get an education. I am amazed at how poorly she is acclimated to the U.S. ways and culture. She knows how to do almost NOTHING. She can't open any package, food or otherwise, without ripping it open and making it almost impossible to close. I don't visualize any Supermarkets there, but only open-air-markets where nothing is packaged. Very poor driver with many minor accidents; got a Driver's License without having basic lessons and no depth perception. DUI's and many other incidents under-the-influence. Does not believe in God, though now I see that Norway has a State religion. Well, there's so much more. What a bad mistake I made. I had chances to marry nice Mexican women and passed on that. Sad. Well, I have better things to do now.

I stay in India. India is far far different then Norway (Norrish). Surprise is that it has no religion. & other facts too are astonishing. India is densely populated, no. 1, with all sorts of crime & frauds. But still people are ambitious & on highest level of alert due to high competition for survival. Both the countries are different world all together. We are 5th largest economy & growing with 7+% GDP. Due to our Pm Mr Narendra Modi, blessed India is on the world map. In Hindu mythology we have 32000000000 Gods & Goddesses. ( Really). We worships Cows, Bulls, Dogs, Elephants & Snakes too. We worship complete Flora & Fauna. YOGA & Veda's are the gifts of India to the world. 70%of population is strictly vegetarian, mee too. We eat 100's of types of vegetables & Millet flat bread. We have 50 odd languages spoken in one country. Primarily we worship Lord ShriKrishna & Ram. We have Gods with Elephant head called Ganesh,
But I wish to visit Nordic countries. I don't know if it's possible in this life.
