So far this is the best layout of a year that I've seen on TH-cam homesteading channels however it's still a lot of wasted space that doesn't mean that I'm saying that what you did was wrong I'm just saying that I can see potential for a different layout
That is a beautiful home, the woodwork is stunning, the kitchen is great and the perfect size, I live off grid in Australia and I have an air conditioner just a small one, and it’s on right now because it’s summer still in February, and it’s running off my 12V solar system, and then if it’s brutally hot like 115F then I use the generator for the evening, it’s changed my life as it gets very hot where I live and then cold in winter not snow cold, but the wind from Antarctica can be pretty cold since there is no landmass in between to break up the wind a bit. I’m only in a small space though, and I use a long drop (pit toilet) outside, so a rain coat is the order of the day, and rugging up when it’s cold & wet, but I don’t like to waste water so it’s ok. Amazing place, congrats on all your hard work.
Hello Australia! Wow...it's HOT there! I hope you are able to get a breeze blowing into your home when you aren't able to run the AC. Stay cool and thanks for watching!!
@@freedomranchhomestead7961 Yep we are in the Southern Hemisphere so our seasons are the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere, yeah I sleep with my sliding door open so now problem, it’s very safe here.
You sure have done such an amazing job setting up and decorating your yurt! I will say, your yurt is the nicest one I’ve seen yet on TH-cam. I’m considering transitioning into yurt living when I sell my home in Japan and return to Canada. I would guess you must have taken years to get your yurt set up how it is now.
Thank you so much! I am so excited for you to possibly live in a yurt! We LOVE it! For Canada I would definitely get the highest insulation you can. A wood stove is awesome for heating it. Honestly, we got the yurt livable in 2 months. It took a day to construct the exterior and roof, then the rest of the time was building the interior walls. I hope you do it!
@@freedomranchhomestead7961 Thank you for your very positive energy and encouragement which really showed in your video! I’ve been debating whether to spend so much money on basically a tent structure (yurt) vs. building a traditional stick-frame, insulated cabin. The yurt is appealing primarily to save a lot of time and effort on construction, plus being able to live in what I perceive as a very calming, relaxing, aesthetically-pleasing round structure with a large, central round skylight to provide a sky view and let in natural light. My biggest concern is staying comfortably warm in the very cold winters in northern Canada 🇨🇦. If going the yurt route, the biggest job will be building the foundation and insulated subfloor and finished floor. I may be off grid relying on solar/wind/micro-hydro depending on access to utilities. It will be a huge transition for me since I’ve been in Japan over 12 years, so I’m taking time right now adjusting to the idea of future yurt life.
OMG....One of the Prettiest Yurts I've ever seen....The wooden Shoes with plants in them..and the Chair in your Bedroom...you said you found them in a vintage shop in FLOYD? Floyd Va?< I ask because I live in Floyd Co Va.
Hi Donald! Thank you so much for your wonderful comments! Yes, Floyd VA (hello neighbor!) Such an awesome little town with incredible artistry and antiques. We are glad you are following along on our journey!
Small world! Which Y were you working out at? I used to teach indoor cycling in Wakefield. We love our yurt and would definitely recommend one (be sure to get a fan inside for those hot summer days!)
Such friendly, cute dogs you have! Are they German Shepherds? About keeping warm in winter, from your experience, how big of a wood stove would you recommend? You mentioned your husband was getting up in the middle of the night to stoke the fire to keep warm. I’m planning on living in a yurt in a subarctic climate in northern BC Canada 🇨🇦. Thanks!
They are German Shepherds, once being a long hair. We love them to pieces! How exciting that you are getting a yurt. Be sure to get one with really good insulation. Ours is not very insulted, which is why Chuck has to keep putting wood on when the temp gets to freezing. As for a wood stove, I would look for one with the highest BTU. I wish you the best of luck!!
If the Yurt is 700 sq ft for example I would recommend a wood stove that is rated for 2100 sq feet. Ours is rated for 1400 and it is not enough on cold nights. Yurts are not very heat efficient. Hope that helps.
@@chuckanderson1770 Hi Chuck. Yes, that is very helpful. Thanks. Do you live in a climate with freezing cold winters? I’m planning on buying a much smaller yurt, either 17’ or 21’ in diameter. So maximum size will be about 350sf. So a wood stove rated for at least 1200sf you figure should be enough without overheating 🥵 me. Lol 😂! Is your yurt insulated? Have you thought of ways to improve your yurt’s insulation?
Hello there! I found you on IG few days ago, but only today got the chance to check on you guys properly :P Can I ask the size of your Yurt? You have done an amazing job, and I cant wait to keep following all your improvements on the new house and amazing property! Thank you so much for sharing
Hello! We are so glad you found us! The yurt is 30 feet across, 705 sq ft. We absolutely love it and can't wait for friends to come stay in it once we move into the house. We truly appreciate you joining the journey with our family!
Incredible! I can't even hang a picture on the wall and you have built, outfitted and decorated your home from scratch. Absolutely amazing and beautiful! I'm curious, what is the ceiling height in the first floor bedroom and bathroom? And why did you opt out of installing a W/D?
Hi Trish!! It has been a true labor of love that has allowed me to get my creative juices flowing…can’t wait to see what happens with the cabin! The ceiling height is about 7’ tall. We decided not to have the W/D because we figured it was just temporary living for us (although we will be living here longer than anticipated since the cabin is taking longer…thank goodness we love it in here!). Once the cabin is ready we will have it in there and guest can come use it as needed. For now, a weekly laundromat trip to town does the trick!
@@freedomranchhomestead7961 Very cool! Can't wait to continue following along - and seeing the cabin come to life! You all are definitely living the dream!!
Thank you! We did build it on our own, for the most part. We had help constructing the deck and putting the yurt up, but the rest we did on our own. You can see the videos on our channel, so please check them out!
Yes, we do have traditional electrical. In the log home we will do the same, but be set up on a generator as well and then eventually switch to solar for both places (that's what we hope for...all depends on the cost!)
@@freedomranchhomestead7961 thank you! I have been thinking of going 34’ but after seeing yours I’m going to stick w the 30’. There’s plenty of room and more room for the deck. I love how yours is wrap around. Did you get plans to build that?
Thank you! The Yurt alone was $18,000 for 30ft, then we had the deck built, which added quite a bit. All the interior walls were constructed from trees we harvested and had milled, so that saved us quite a bit of money.
@@freedomranchhomestead7961 you guys did an amazing job on the yurt. Honestly, I think it's the most beautiful yurt I've seen. Thank you for the size and pricing!! I've really found it interesting to hear your story and watch you all work together. Thanks for sharing the journey❤️🤗

@@freedomranchhomestead7961 Good for you guys! This has been an idea in the back of my head as a more affordable way to get into a new house when I retire (haven't quite made it the wife's dream yet, lol).
Yes, we built it as a temporary home for us while the log home is being built. Once we move out it will become a place for people who visit to stay. We had only planned on being in it for a few months, but we celebrated a year in the beginning of September and have truly enjoyed living here!
Beautiful. I have a couple questions. Did you get the 7' or 10' walls? I'm almost certain it's 7 but would like to know for sure. Also, I love the layout. We are considering buying a yurt. Would you mind sharing your layout plans?
Hi Garrett! Yes, 7' walls. We unfortunately don't really have plans to share. I had a vision in my head and then mapped it out on the floor with tape so we could see how it would look. I know there are floor plan ideas on line to search through as well. Good luck with getting a yurt! We LOVE ours :)
Hi Kitty! I wish I could tell you who is singing in the intro. I get all my music from a copyright free web sire called epidemic sound. I do not keep the downloaded music, so I do not have the artists name anymore. I'm sorry!
Never heard of insulation ? , you can add sound proofing too but, as a person that comes from hurt dwellers , it's like living near a road , you learn to ignore it
We constructed the yurt inside the protection of white pines to protect from the wind. Also, because of the round shape the wind that does come in contact just blows around it.
The yurt was made in Floyd, VA (USA) and is 30' , 705 sq ft. I would highly recommend it, but if I were to do it again I would have regular windows installed instead of the vinyl ones we have that can only open from the outside.
I'm designing mine near Floyd AND LOVE LOVE LOVE YOU AND CHUCK'S DESIGN!
Thank you so much!! Blue Ridge Yurts build amazing structures!

GREAT LOOKING HOME. I HAVEN'T RULED OUT A YURT FOR OUR OFF GRID HOMESTEAD YET. HOW DO YOU KEEP THE INSECTS OUT?
We love the yurt! As I me mentioned in your other comment, they really are not a problem, so long as you keep the door closed.
Looks great! When renting out will people have to pay extra for the dogs sleeping on floor?
Ha!! The pups are included with the all encompassing cozy experience 😄

Hello there! I found you on IG few days ago, but only today got the chance to check on you guys properly :P
Can I ask the size of your Yurt?
Love your home did u build it by yourselves?
Thank you! We did build it on our own, for the most part. We had help constructing the deck and putting the yurt up, but the rest we did on our own. You can see the videos on our channel, so please check them out!
Perhaps I missed the episode showing, but have you guys traditional electric then? I'm assuming.
Yes, we do have traditional electrical. In the log home we will do the same, but be set up on a generator as well and then eventually switch to solar for both places (that's what we hope for...all depends on the cost!)
Looks beautiful! What size is the yurt?
Thank you! It is 30ft
What’s the heat pump brand? Also how far out is your bedroom wall vs bathroom wall? Thank you looks lovely
Heat pump is Hitachi. The walls are equal.
@@freedomranchhomestead7961
How far are the walls out 15ft?
Beautiful. Sewage/drainage? Septic?
Thank you! We have septic.
7:40 ... is that a bear at the door ?
So beautiful! What company did you get your yurt from?
Thank you! We used Blue Ridge Yurts, located in Floyd, VA
Very nice .. I would enjoy having you on a Live with me
Awesome! I saw your channel and like the idea of interviewing people to see how their tiny home works for them.
Beautiful! What is the size of this yurt??
Thank you!! It is 30' in diameter, about 704 sq ft, not including the loft (which doesn't have a lot of head room...perfect for snoozing in 😁)
@@freedomranchhomestead7961 thank you! I have been thinking of going 34’ but after seeing yours I’m going to stick w the 30’. There’s plenty of room and more room for the deck. I love how yours is wrap around. Did you get plans to build that?
Insulated sides & top I’m guessing, right?
yes, definitely insulted!
This is really beautiful and the floor plan is great! Can you tell how much it cost to finish your yurt please?
@@tracir3072 Oh my goodness...thank you for your incredibly kind words! You have no idea how much that means to us! We are pretty excited about how the yurt turned out and have truly enjoyed calling it home for the last year and a half. Now we can't wait for guests to come and enjoy it! Thanks for joining us!
Really cool. You guys live in it full time?
We do! We moved in before the interior walls were completed in September and have been working on it since. We are thrilled it is finally (almost) completed and we can relax in its coziness!
@@freedomranchhomestead7961 Good for you guys! This has been an idea in the back of my head as a more affordable way to get into a new house when I retire (haven't quite made it the wife's dream yet, lol).
Do you intend on just living in the yurt temporarily until a permanent house is built?
Yes, we built it as a temporary home for us while the log home is being built. Once we move out it will become a place for people who visit to stay. We had only planned on being in it for a few months, but we celebrated a year in the beginning of September and have truly enjoyed living here!
Great job. Please can I ask what the diameter of that yurt is ?
It is 30', about 705 sqft. Thanks for watching!
how big is it? looks huge
It is 30 feet in diameter, about 705 sq feet!
Was it challenging to run power in this space?
Like what you have done with it. What is the diameter of the yurt?
Thank you Sean! It is 15' across, 705 sq ft
@@freedomranchhomestead7961 thx much
What size are the those supporting logs holding up the loft up?
2x6 studs.
Beautiful. I have a couple questions. Did you get the 7' or 10' walls? I'm almost certain it's 7 but would like to know for sure.
Also, I love the layout. We are considering buying a yurt. Would you mind sharing your layout plans?
Yes they are 7. Thanks for watching!
Hi Garrett! Yes, 7' walls. We unfortunately don't really have plans to share. I had a vision in my head and then mapped it out on the floor with tape so we could see how it would look. I know there are floor plan ideas on line to search through as well.
Good luck with getting a yurt! We LOVE ours :)
Awesome yurt, what diameter?
Thank you! It is 30 feet across, 704 sqft (not including loft)
Do your heads get cold while sleeping in your bed from the wall?
Not at all! Especially since we have a heavy duty headboard on our bed.
@@freedomranchhomestead7961 ok. Thx much
Like in Mongolia
I also watched a video a young couple live in wild in yurt and even eating the national food named “buuz” :-)
👍👍👍
Add a few cotton balls with Vicks Vapor Rub on them where you don't want 🦨 to go on 😂
That is a fantastic suggestion!! Thank you 😊
Was that a black bear that came in view at the door? 😂
No but we have a lot on our property 😊
More than likely our large German Shepherd 🤪
Who’s singing in the intro? Does anyone know?
Sounds familiar.
Hi Kitty! I wish I could tell you who is singing in the intro. I get all my music from a copyright free web sire called epidemic sound. I do not keep the downloaded music, so I do not have the artists name anymore. I'm sorry!
Where does running water come from?
We have a spring box and the water is pumped up to the yurt and the log home.
What about windy weather
We are tucked into some pine trees and don’t feel a thing!! We can hear the wind howling around us and we stay nice and cozy 😊
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!!
Are there bugs that come in the chopped wood?
No bugs!
What do you do about bugs and spiders?
The same as you do in a typical home. They really don't have many access points, unless you leave the front door open or the dome.
The biggest issue with Yurts is when it rains outside you are living inside of a drum. The beating sound even from a soft rain is intolerable
We didn’t find that to be a huge issue with our Yurt. Perhaps the extra insulation dampens the sound.
It could be noisy with heavy rain, but nothing that was unbearable for us!
Never heard of insulation ? , you can add sound proofing too but, as a person that comes from hurt dwellers , it's like living near a road , you learn to ignore it
What happens when high winds come?
We constructed the yurt inside the protection of white pines to protect from the wind. Also, because of the round shape the wind that does come in contact just blows around it.
Is this a Pacific Yurt?
What size/ diameter/sqft?
Wanting to have a similar set in Fiji
The yurt was made in Floyd, VA (USA) and is 30' , 705 sq ft. I would highly recommend it, but if I were to do it again I would have regular windows installed instead of the vinyl ones we have that can only open from the outside.
@@freedomranchhomestead7961
Thank you so much
I'm really focused on a purchase as the yurt is perfect for that climate
@@islesanctum833 it would be absolutely perfect for Fiji!! I'm so envious!
