Agree AC colors are awesome and their personally. Knock on wood, mine haven't collapse rock work but do shift gravel around a lot.

I've decorated all my tanks with rocks from the landscape company I work for. I spent 10 bucks for a 40 and 60 gallon tank and have a variety of nice rocks. beats paying 4 dollars a pound for stone at the LFS.

MASS Aquariums since I see you actually reply to these I was wondering how many fish you've lost to aggression in that tank thinking of starting an mbuna tank in my spare 40. also how stocked is it and have you ever had clown loaches with them
Hey Mike Mass, I just picked up a 40 breeder. First, I know it doesn't come with a center brace, have you ever had any bowing issues? Would a center brace be better? Last, what and how many African cichlids could I keep in it permanently?
Never had any troubles. It's my favorite tank style. Maybe 10-15 Mbunas

Thanks for the shoutout Mike from Mass. Appreciated it. Your getting Christmas FuLu, they are cool cichlids to have. They are actually Victorian. From Lake Kanyaboli and Lake Victoria. They grow to about 4" or 5". But they get amazing coloring on them.

I never got around to making a facebook. Ha ha. Try it with the Mbunas and Fulu. But most of the times they won't color much.

I just bought a waterbox 50.3 aio tank, I was thinking about going saltwater but cichlids are an option. Would an aio tank work? How many fish would I be able to fit in a 50 gallon?
Yes of course. You’ll have plenty of room for lots of fish
What type of filter do you use? I have a double hang on the back filter. Idk if that will work for cichlids?

How long did it take for them to color up? I have 7 juveniles that aren't showing slot for color and I'm hoping they eventually color up

You mentioned that when you first set up the tank the rocks were completely covered with algae and that it got better with time. Did you add any kind of phosphate absorbing media to your canister or do anything else that helped get rid of it?
No. It's just new tank syndrome
Jesus! I remember watching a video a while ago of this tank when you first put the fish in. They have grown A LOT! How did you get them to grow so fast? What do you feed?
Thanks for keeping up. I deed veggie CICHLID pellets once a day and do my water changes. Yeah these guys grew fast. I also have 30 or so fry in my grow out from the labs
Hello Mike, I have a few questions about your 40 breeder cichlid tank. I'm wondering what lid you are using and how you're getting your lighting. I am very interested in getting a 40 set up but I'm finding lids and lights are hard to find.

I just got a 40 gallon breeder tank and i was hoping to make it a cichlid tank, My local fish shop is telling me that he wont sell me cichlids until i have a at least a 75 gallon. any reason for this?
They do get big and aggressive. Very territorial

hey bro. i know you dont have mbunas anymore but I wanted your opinion. if you were going to do a 75 gallon mbuna tank in your living room, what filter (quiet) would you use and how many fish would you start out with for a 75?

I do not. I had one in my reef tank that leaked voltage and I shocked myself

Looks good. Usually there is dominant one that chases the hell out of the rest of them, and it is difficult to view, because they dart around.
What if it's a 40 regular, or high sided?

St international canister filter. Just try and turn your tank over 4 times an hour.

-I've never kept cichlids before-
Could I keep:
3 yellow lab
2 Clown lab
2 Pindani
2 White tail acai
2 Albino solofi
1 Hongi
1 Chipokae
BTW I'm getting them as juveniles so I will not know the gender-And it's a corner aquarium,with strong filter that is stored in the cupord of tank

Just remember they will get big and start to get territorial. I would say 10 fish max.

The tanks that I have seen in other videos where they have said their fish are not killing each other, ether have tons of rock or no rock at all. Nothing to fight over or it seems every fish needs to have its own spot. I believe that is why your fish are killing each other. I will be testing this soon.

lmao. youll have some time before the haps out grow the 40. depending on tank size. look into adding a sump to the build. theyre fun to set up. and biologically theyre far superior to canisters. but they suck at mechanical. thats why i run both.
I thought the xmas Hap only get to 4 inches. That should be good. What do you think about over stalking with good filtration?
im unfamiliar with the xmas hap. it all depends on the size( full growth taken into account) of the fish and how many you want too keep. haps are free swimmers. they need more room. no need for caves. adolescent haps would do ok in the 40 for a while. but youd have to upgrade at some point. most haps can get pretty big. if your new tank plans fall through, i would swap the 40 and the 75. peacocks go well with them, even they can get decent size. my ob is pushing 6in.
Xmas Fulu is the Xystichromis Phytophagus and not your typical Hap. The males max out around 4". It may not show much color in a tank with mbuna. A colony of these in the 40 breeder would make a nice species tank. The fish you couldn't remember is a Melanochromis Auratus; most likely females. They have one of the worst reputations in the hobby.
Thanks AJ. Yeah those guys are suppose to be aggressive but they havnt really messed with anybody. Why do they have such a bad rap?
Well Melanochromis as a whole have a shitty rep for being over the top aggresive. I just bought a group a few weeks ago, so I guess I'll soon find out. Having only females works in your favor. I think with all Mbuna, it comes down to numbers, tank size, tankmates and each individual fish. Damn nature... you scary!

MASS Aquariums update- I bought Melanochromis Chipokae. May have the worst rep in the African Cichlid world. Qty. 13. Looks like 2-3 males max. Rest females. Got them at 2-2.5 and some are approaching 4 now. Not so bad so far in a 6' tank with some other badasses.
